Even expecting it, Thratch jumps a bit in surprise. That thing is louder than I expected, he says, even though no one can likely hear him.

As he talks, he leaps for the window. Once outside, he turns off the amulet and starts climbing up.

I can climb at full speed.

Once himself, Lys, and Wan are at the top, he activates the rope and brings it back up to him, coiling it up and returning it to his bag. While he does so, he says, You guys make your way down the rope to the other side. I'll be along as soon as I get my rope.

Once done, he makes his way accross to the other side, and then cuts the rope letting it fall to the gallery.

Posting a lot of actions to help move the story along, but if anything intetjects and stops us, then we'll just treat this as Thratch's plan.

Upon hearing the alarm, The Painter runs to the large eye on the floor, utters an incomprehensible word and vanishes in a flash of light.

You hear mechanical gears and chains clicking as metal bars begin to descend down the walls to block the doors and windows.

"It's just a precaution, honored guests, to ensure your safety. It appears there was an incident upstairs. I'm sure this will be resolved in no time at all." The host calls out from the entrance, and over the alarm.

You probably have about a minute or less until the bars close down and trap you in the gallery.

It appears Quinys has made good on arranging a distraction for you.

As the spider bites him, he recoils and then sees the creature materialize. His eyes then shift quickly Tenchi.

"You are correct."

Vehemence dismisses his sword and scans through the crowd as he follows Tenchi's lead.

As they exit, his eyes drift back towards the place where he first saw the painter at the balcony above.

I will find you again. And when the time comes, I will take everything from you.

In his soul he decided that there was no longer any worth to try and find the one who owned the desiccated heart which lay upon his breast- and the one which lay beneath it. His pupils quivered as he came to the realization that all he now had left was the forlorn path of forging for himself a crown anew. This moment of despair deftly surged into blame-shifting.

"As I bound her, so too shall I bind thee, my child."

He mutters to himself as he wafts through the well-dressed blob towards the door.

Sorry I have been gone so long. This will be a longer post catching up on everything that has happened so far.

At the tavern before the party.
The morning of the theft, Ashlyn will spend a great deal of time preparing herself. She finds a lovely blue dress that matches well the sapphire crystal that hangs around her neck. She holds the dress against herself and looks into the mirror. Disappointed in the modesty, she quickly finds scissors, thread, and needle in her disguise kit, and makes the much needed alterations to the dress. After she applies her makeup, she will descend into the tavern, the low plunging neckline, and high slit draws your attention to her legs, showing much, yet leaving the desire to see more. Long white gloves cover her hands, and the silky fabric extends up to her elbows. She offers Brother Attero her hand to help her into the carriage.

Ashlyn catches the man glancing at her thought out the trip, pretending to not notice. She does occasionally flash him an encouraging smile, sliding closer to him and even leaning across his lap to see the view out his window.

guests:

At the party
Upon entering, Ashlyn's eyes gleam at the decadance. Clasping her gloved hands over her breast, she stares upward at the beautiful arches, marble-work, and stairways. When she has marveled at the architecture, she leads Brother Attero to the paintings, she has little interest in the works, but rather is fascinated with the costumes and clothing of the nobles. She focuses on the women's outfits and what draws the men's attention most. She is curious about the masks, and will ask in passing to one of the nobles carrying one.

When they catch the attention of the sage, Ashlyn shivers at the cold touch on her bare flesh. "I meant no disrespect sir, and I must thank you for the invitation. The party is wonderful."

DM Critic wrote:

The Sage looks at Aterro for a moment and smiles before turning his attention back to Ashlyn.

”Chatty one, this guard of yours.”

”So tell me, fair Lady Ashlyn, what has brought you to these parts?”

Ashlyn flashes a warm smile at the sage, "As he said, the High-Father is a patron of the arts and a friend of my father's. My father is far more concerned that I would like in protecting my innocence. Is is unusual for him to allow me to such a forray, especially one so far from home. But, since the Brother here has sworn to protect me, my father has allowed me to come."

She welcomes the invitation to meet the Painter, but at Vehemence's outburst, she will slip behind Brother Attero to "protect" her.

When the security alarm is sounded by the Painter, Ashlyn tugs Brother Attero's arm, "Sir, I wish to leave, I do not feel safe here." Clinging tightly to her bodyguard, he allows him to guide her through the throngs of guests and out the doors. As the Brother takes off, she releases his arm with an encouraging squeeze, and starts down towards the safehouse, glancing about to see if she is being followed.

Thieves:

You all make your way down into the streets and start to scramble back to the tavern. You hear shouting and screaming bellow from the third floor of the gallery, above the ruckus of dozens of loud children below, but at this point you don’t dare stop or look back. You swear for a moment you see Aterro flying near the building, but you keep moving.

Thratch hears a whisper in his ear again, which he recognizes as Quinys,

”Keep any torches extinguished and no light spells! Make sure you aren’t followed. Things didn’t go quite as smoothly as I’d hoped. We need to move quickly."

You hustle through the winding streets, Wan in the lead, and make it to the tavern. You carefully look around for signs of anyone else, including your other companions. When you’re sure the coast is clear, you run through the back into the tavern and down the stairs into the cellar. Quinys is waiting.

Moments later, Ashlyn, Aterro, Tenchi and Vehemence come running down the stairs.

Guests:

As everyone takes advantage of the distraction and narrowly escapes the gallery, Aterro uses his boots of flying to scout around. He briefly sees Wan, Lys and Thratch hit the ground and sprint away from the gallery. He tries to call out but they can’t hear him, and it looks like they have no intent to stop. He glances over and hears the Wizards shouting from the open window on the third floor, and lands before they might spot him.

A large crowd of distressed guests are outside now running in all directions, and the group take advantage of the fray to slip into a nearby alley and run back to the tavern. They stop a few times to avoid footsteps on the street. At least two small groups of white elves and other guards from the gallery pass by.

Ashlyn hears a whisper in her ear, which she recognizes as Quinys,

”Keep any torches extinguished and no light spells! Make sure you aren’t followed. Things didn’t go quite as smoothly as I’d hoped. We need to move quickly.”

When you reach the back courtyard of the tavern, you see the thieves slip in through the back entrance. You take a quick look around to make sure you weren’t followed and do the same. You head down the stairs into the cellar to find Quinys waiting with Thratch, Lys and Wan.

Everyone:

”Well, our merry band is back together again! Well done everyone. Into the tunnels, quickly. I’m going to cast an illusion to disguise our exit. I’ve also set up another glyph of warding down here to explode if anyone else comes down after we leave.”

You hear sudden loud rumbles upstairs near the front entrance.

”Through this door! Quickly, quickly!” Quinys shouts. As you shuffle through she begins casting a spell to conceal your escape.

You move down a long, narrow cobblestone tunnel that soon opens into a larger sewer system. The smell is intense, but bearable.

You find a quiet spot a couple blocks north, where the tunnels fork in different directions. Quinys throws up a simple light spell to illuminate the tunnel.

”We should be alright here for a few minutes.”

”Now, back to business. I believe you have my gold and my amulet?”

”Keep going north here, and in about 2 blocks is an exit up to the str —“

Quinys is suddenly interrupted by sounds of impish laughter coming from farther out in the tunnels.

It's kind of free-form right now, since I'm using mob attack rules for the kobolds. Initiative doesn't really work well with it. I looked at the UA Battlesystem rules, but they're more designed for many to many combat rather than many to few or one.

I'll throw init out there for the group so you can keep your actions better organized. Assume the kobolds will do something between everyone's actions until a significant number are neutralized. Any individual actors will go after everyone in the group and will make an individual attack roll.

We are surrounded by more kobolds than we can count. Two of our people have tried to flee. They were first stopped with fire from the kobolds, then told they were going the wrong way by Quinnys. Finally, the kobolds dropped a net on them.

Tenchi tried to douse the flames. Meanwhile, Quinnys cast a spell to char some of them and told us all to get close to her as she believes she can get us out of this.

As for the combat itself, it's freeform right now, and there will be no count on initiative for the kobolds as they act after every person. We can kill as many as we like, and when the DM figures enough have been killed, he'll start them on an actual initiative counter, representing them having their numbers dropped to low enough where it matters.

Aterro had stood like an iron statue, in, simply, disbelief that kobolds, kobolds, had the arrogance, or OUTRAGEOUSNESS, to challenge so large a party openly.

A party which included himself.

He had drawn his sword, but stood, stonewall-like, as stones and offal clanged against his armor, allowing the honeyed-tongued among the party their due. He was not always clear when a situation warranted talk, and when it warranted action, so of late he sometimes hesitated just by default.

But that time was past.

As the halfling ducked behind him, wisely, seeking cover, Aterro replied to him, in honest regret. "Apologies, good Thratch. 'Tis wise council to call the armed body together to form a closed fist. Mutual protection; overlapping fields of fire.

Alas, for every phalanx prickling with steel, there must be at least one fool to play the vanguard...

...and go up the center.

Seeing the ironclad one make his jaunt left Vehemence with a glimmer of dastardly hope.

This one has mettle!

He follows suit, utilizing the force of his malignancy.
Marking the doomed whelp before him with his witchcraft, he rushes up to the fool, smiting it with all his pent frustrations.

Casting Hex on his target, making its' STR checks disadvantaged as well as extra dmg, then moving forward and attacking. If I kill the target I can spend a bonus action next turn to realign the hex to another target/concentration.

Several more kobolds fall at the hands of the group. Thratch’s arrow, Aterro’s … Attero attack and greatsword attack manage to thin their ranks. Vehemence singles out a lone creature upon which to take out his anger.

A large number of the kobolds get scared and begin to retreat.

Some of the dimmer ones fail to notice for a moment that their companions are on the run.

The group is feeling pretty good at this point that they’re driving back the creatures.

Then a voice echoes through the tunnels from behind.

"MUSE?"

The remaining kobolds scatter. Quinys curses under her breath.

”My … Muse? You are in league with this wretched gnome thief?”

”I… I thought we had a connection … I … Maybe I just misread the situation … But to associate with these … degenerate thieves?”

You turn around slowly. A robed figure floats forward, just slightly above the water. Most of you recognize that it’s The Painter. He looks like he's trying really hard not to let the filthy sewer water touch his robes.

Quinys pipes up from the back, first quietly to the group, ”don’t anyone attack him. seriously. we’ll all die.”

Then she addresses The Painter directly, sheepishly, ”Um … hey there tall guy … long time no see … I was just collecting on that gold you still owed me that you seemed to forg— “

”SILENCE!” The Painter interjects.

”Give me ONE! One GOOD reason why I shouldn’t disintegrate you all for stealing from me!”

”Well? I’m WAITING.”

Because you're a blow hard a&#!&~+ who doesn't deserve it. Thratch yells from some shadow. And after that party, you probably don't have enough magical energy left over to get us all.

But most importantly, because the painting called to us all to rescue her and set her free. And that's exactly what we plan on doing. If you ain't going to help us set her free, then you can f**~ off like the rest of the world.

The Painter's eyes narrow and he catches sight of Thratch.

He waves a hand and mutters some words.

Thratch Wisdom Save vs DC17: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

Thratch seizes up for a moment and then curls into a ball, whimpering.

Thratch:

You are haunted by your deepest fears made real. They surround you vividly. The terror is overwhelming, and you're afraid to move.

Please roll an additional Wisdom save to avoid 4d10 psychic damage.

"Anybody else have anything clever to say?" The Painter asks.

"Not you, Quinys. I know you do. Just keep it to yourself."

No more terror visions!

Thratch screams about being beat by a man named Garund. No! I promise I'll get the painting for you! Please don't beat me again! I don't know where it is, it's in my dreams! I'll find it. I'll give it to you. I swear! Please don't hurt me anymore, Garund!

And then he falls unconscious.

Vehemence was delighted to see the demon painter before him again.
Even amidst the gloomy circumstances, he already had lost that which he strove for. What else did he have to lose?

"TO WHAT DO I OWE HE WHO TRIED TO ENSNARE ME?"

He charges the crafty wizard, screaming at him in the silence of his head.

Theft from the thief? Whose sin is greater? The husband's or his wife's captor? ANSWER ME THAT RIDDLE, GRAND MAGUS!

Were there light to illuminate the dank tunnel, there would be no hint of color to reflect from the furnace kings' eyes.

Aterro chases a few of the kobolds away to make sure they've left for good, but when The Painter makes himself known, he simply turns about and watches.

As Thratch screams and falls silent, the WarCleric slowly hovers down toward the crowd, his full helmet looking even less amused, if such a thing was possible. "Hm. You have made a small halfling unconscious. How very powerful you must be."

Ateroo extends a hand, and healing lifeforce flows through Thratch's body.

"Are you a hypocrite, Painter? 'Tis a fair question. Would you seek to blast us for stealing from you? But harken, you hath stolen from Quinys. And she simply sought remuneration for that which she is owed.

While you meditate upon that, perhaps you would care to let the halfling finish? He was in the middle of describing the motivation for securing the painting when you rendered him unable to speak.

But soft, if you would expose yourself to the true source, I think another of our party might have more to say."

Aterro turns to Vehemence, giving the man a fair opening.

And then gets ninja'd at the post! Let's just pretend I went first! =p

That totally works for the scene, no problem! It would make sense that the voice of reason guy is then interrupted by the loose cannon. The other sequencing is indeed awkward. Not that my siege helped our cause in anyyyy manner. Lol.

Time to split the party again.

Wan & Lys:

Once you both dodge the nets, Wan grabs Lys and runs through the flames. You both climb up a ladder to the streets of Vornheim as you hear a strange echoing voice boom.

The section of town you reach is quiet. It looks like there have been crowds through recently, but now it’s eerily still. You look to the north and your final destination.

Time to show off that urchin feature.

Also, because it's been long enough,

Everyone Else:

Aterro tries to be the reasonable one, when Vehemence interjects with a swing of his pact sword.

The Painter looks at Vehemence with puzzlement and indignation.

He’s about to respond when Quinys yells out something unintelligible and dives into the middle of the group, and there’s a flash of light!

1d100 ⇒ 67

The light clears, and you’re all on a dark city street, illuminated only by moonlight. You look up and see a familiar tower against the north wall of Vornheim, but it looks to still be about a mile away.

Quinys picks herself up and walks over to Thratch.

”You’re lucky to be alive right now, halfling. I don’t know if you’re suicidal or just stupid!”

Then she walks up to Vehemence, kicking him in the shin, ”No question that you’re just an idiot!”

”Dust yourselves off and let’s go. I don’t have all night, and neither do you.”

Lys:
