"Get him away from there!" Skivven shouts.

Valeria Strength Check: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
While Valeria is able to avoid getting trapped in the muck herself, she is unable to assist Harrash in getting out of the sticky trap he's found himself in.
A pair of tentacles crawl from the confines of the rocky shell and strike at Harrash and Valeria.
Attack against Harrash: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Attack against Valeria: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Harrash gets his shield up to defend himself while Valeria nimbly dodges the blow.
Everyone can go!
Harrash |
Though stuck in the goo, Harrash continues to fight with his sword, but the goo prevents him from hitting.
Attack (entangled): 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 5 - 2 = 10
Trem Kiran |
Trem turns his attention to the creature, focusing his attention on it. "Ssshitterr Drrhatektihan" He utters a couple of words and dark reddish energy transfer from him to the thing that block the passage.
Evil Eye, -2 AC, Will DC 15. On success, effect last for 1 round, otherwise, it last for 7 rounds.
"Shatter Protection"
Skivven Kraskarras |
Skivven moves up and shoots at the creature from around the corner.
X-bow -4 cover -4 melee: 1d20 + 6 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 4 - 4 = 10 Doubtful, but it is entangled and under the evil eye, so I'll roll damage just in case:
damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
"It's impossible to get to! Its blocking the whole hallway!"
Matt Adams 259 |
Harrash feels a biting pain in his legs. He looks down to see a thin root like tendril has latched itself onto him. Harrash takes 1 point of bleed damage.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Valeria continues to avoid the entrapping fluid, but unable to back away, she is forced to stay in its radius. The gunslinger draws her signature pistol and takes aim at the creature. She pulls the trigger and a resounding boom echoes through the chamber.
Belle: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
The bullet pierces the creature's flesh and draws thick purple blood from the body.
In response, one of the tentacles whips out at Valeria.
AOO: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
The force of the appendage sends her flying hard against the rock wall of the cave, momentarily knocking the breath out of her. It continues to assault her.
Tentacle 1: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
She manages to duck under the next swing so that the attack hits only the stone behind her.
Another tentacle strikes at the entrapped Harrash.
Tentacle 2: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
He again blocks the strike with his shield.
Everyone Go!
Skivven Kraskarras |
Can I try to use Heal skill on Harrash to stop his bleeding while he is still in combat?
Arrenopos |
As frustrating as it is to not be able to close, Arrenopos reloads his crossbow and takes another shot.
attack: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 4 = 22
confirm crit: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 6 - 4 = 5
damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
This time the bolt hits with a satisfying thunk.
Harrash |
Attack: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 - 2 = 6
Harrash attacks again, but is too off-balance to manage to hit his target.
I'm not sure Harrash needs to be healed urgently. He's at full hp minus the bleed, and he or Trem can easily cast CLW after combat.
Does Harrash know anything about the creature's strengths or weaknesses from the knowledge check, or only that it resembles a squid?
Skivven Kraskarras |
If you can get to him. The passage is a little cramped.
Looks like the way is blocked.
Skivven pulls out his crossbow and takes a shot. He manages to shoot the creature by shooting between Harrash's legs!
X-bow -8 cover & melee: 1d20 + 6 - 8 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 8 = 18
X-bow confirm?: 1d20 + 6 - 8 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 8 = 0
X-bow damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
"Hah! Take that!"
Matt Adams 259 |
While Harrash doesn't recognize the monster, he deduces that the goo he's trapped in has to be excreted from the beast. The thing draining blood from his leg is some kind of feeding tendril. The alien aberration must drain its victims dry rather than bury them whole. The stone casing is also generated naturally, like a crab or turtle. It's not actually stone.
Harrash |
Harrash's stomach turns as he says uncomfortably, "This thing is feeding on me, and I'm stuck in its excrement. I hope we aren't about to meet its family, too."
Trem Kiran |
Again Trem stares at the creature. More of the dark reddish energy transfer from Trem to the creature as he speaks different words. " Inndiirr issssialt" This time, the energy focus more around the creature's tentacle.
Evil Eye, -2 Attack, Will DC 15. On success, effect last for 1 round, otherwise, it last for 7 rounds.
Matt Adams 259 |
The monster is bombarded with crossbow bolts and it recoils in pain.
Will save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The tentacle monster begins to slow in its movements under Trem's gaze.
Valeria reloads her pistol and takes another shot at the monster.
Belle: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
Her bullet wounds the monster again.
AOO: 1d20 ⇒ 3
The retaliation toward the gunslinger comes no where close to connecting with Valeria.
Two more tentacles swing towards Valeria and Harrash.
Tentacle 1: 1d20 ⇒ 6
Tentacle 2: 1d20 ⇒ 14
The creature is being worn down. Neither of its attacks had enough force behind them to deal any real damage. The feeding tendril in Harrash continues to feed.
Harrash-make another Fort save.
Everyone Go!
Skivven Kraskarras |
Skivven reloads his crossbow and takes another shot. But the bolt gets lost in the melee and he can't see if it hit or not.
X-bow -8 cover & melee: 1d20 + 6 - 8 ⇒ (13) + 6 - 8 = 11
X-bow damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
"We really need a better plan for these narrow corridors."
Harrash |
"I would try casting spells instead of fighting from up here, but I didn't really have a choice this time..." Harrash mutters as he weakly thrusts his sword once more.
Fortitude: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Attack: 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 5 - 2 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Matt Adams 259 |
Harrash manages to strike clean through the tentacle attacking him. Taking advantage of the opening, he thrusts the blade into the core of the beast. It squirms for a bit and collapses. He breaks free of the entrapping fluid and passes into the area beyond the tunnel.
Without a light source, he can't see much but the walls curve away from each other to create a larger area. The floor is made of loose sand that goes on and on. The walls of rock rise up beyond your field of vision.
Harrash |
I'm actually not sure why I was leading. I don't have a great to-hit, and it doesn't make sense if Arrenopos is available.
"I'm glad to be over with that," Harrash says. "And we still haven't even gotten to the pit that the skulks warned us about..."
Matt Adams 259 |
I think it was because Arrenopos couldn't hit above a 10 early on. Dice hate. Also, it made sense for you to be next to your gorilla. Besides the area here is wider than even the range of darkvision.
Even with the makeshift torches you are carrying through the caverns, you can't see the walls or ceiling of this strange environment. Like a great, underground desert, the floor all around is made of sand that piles into great dunes. The rock walls pass out of vision to the left and right. You find a trail of footprints just outside of the tunnel. They head out into the underground terrain, undisturbed by wind or rain.
Trem Kiran |
With the battle now over, Trem walks into the strange underground desert. "This... This is amazing. Can... Can you, I mean, can you imagine the size of the place." He then looks at the rest of the group. "Oh, um, anyone needs any healing?"
Harrash |
Survival: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Harrash tries to determine whose footprints he sees, and whether this was possibly the floor that fell through.
Matt Adams 259 |
The footprints appear to be humanoid and specifically, human sized. There are several sets of tracks going in, but only one set of tracks comes out. The owner of the returning set probably belonged to one of the corpses you all ready returned to town in the earlier caverns.
It seems as solid as it can be. At least, you won't fall into another pool of sticky fluid.
Skivven Kraskarras |
"It looks safe, but let's tread carefully in any case."
Skivven advances slowly into the room, periodically prodding the sand ahead of him with a crossbow bolt.
Trapfinding: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26 (or 25 for a non-trapfinding perception roll)
Matt Adams 259 |
As you begin to traverse the underground desert, you quickly come across a shape at the edges of your light source. It seems to be a humanoid standing alone among the sands. While those who require light see it as a thin, dark figure, the party members with darkvision are better able to distinguish it at this distance.
The figure is not a man, but a skeleton of one or at least, something close. The skull is larger than a human's and elongated to a more egg-like shape. It has four arms sprouting from a taller than average torso. In fact, it resembles the four-armed cave painting you saw in one of the previous caverns. It appears to have been keeping an eye on the tunnel entrance. As it spots you, an eerie green light glows from the sockets where its eyes should be. From among the darkness, you hear the unholy cries of unseen creatures.

Skivven: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Skeleton 7: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Arrenopos, Harrash, Skivven, and Trem can go.
At the very edge of his darkvision, Skivven can see that the trail heads for a rock outcropping.
Skivven Kraskarras |
"Eeep! Hear that? This fellow isn't alone. Do you think he's hostile?"
Skivven steps out and levels his crossbow and points it at the skeleton. "Stay back! I'm warning you!" Skivven squeaks.
5' step (to get a clear line of fire) and then ready action to shoot the skeleton if it advances. Obviously this is a combat encounter but Skivven can't really be sure.
Readied Crossbow Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 191d6 ⇒ 5
Arrenopos |
"Don't wait on them, Skivven, do they look like something that can be reasoned with?" Arrenopos says to the hesitant investigator. With that he advances to the skeleton and attacks.
attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Harrash |
"This creature looks just like the paintings we saw in the caves," Harrash notes as he approaches to hit it with his sword.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Matt Adams 259 |
Skivven's crossbow bolt hits the skeleton dead on, but it glances off the bone.
Arrenopos and Harrash cut the undead apart before it has a chance to attack.
In the distance, Skivven sees another skeleton in the distance, near the rocks at the edge of his darkvision.
Trem still has to go, then the Skeleton will get to make its move.
Skivven Kraskarras |
"There's another one over there!" squeaks Skivven.
Trem Kiran |
With the big open space, Trem feel a little bit too vulnerable. ""Nnigh irrnnharr." Calling upon the arcane power, he covers himself in a magically created shimmering armor.
Casting Mage armor
Matt Adams 259 |
The skeleton in view races toward you. It's four arms spread wide as it runs through the sand. It slashes through the air with its bony fingers as it reaches Skivven, the closest party member.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 1 = 13
Just in time, he ducks his head down throwing his hands over his ears to hold them. He feels the movement of air over his scalp as the swipe misses.
Valeria draws her freshly loaded pistol and fires away at the skeleton.
Belle: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Her shot goes wild and hits one of the far off dunes.
Two more skeletons run out off the shadows. One of them gets close enough to take a swing at Harrash.
Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
He doesn't even need to move to avoid the blow.
Harrash, Arrenopos, Skivven, and Trem can go.
Skivven Kraskarras |
Skivven drops his crossbow.
"Crossbow bolts don't work on them!" he shouts.
Skivven ducks and tries to stay out of the skeleton's grasp.
Standard action to go full defense. I have nothing that will hurt it. AC is now 22.
He then scurries past the skeleton and ducks under the skeletons' arms, while pulling out a dagger.
Move action to tumble and draw a dagger while I move. Setting up a flank.
acrobatics to tumble through threatened area: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (2) + 9 = 11
"Valeria, Trem! He's all yours! No! Hey, bony! Over here!"
Trem Kiran |
Trem gets in melee and tries to use his healing hex to damage the undead. In his rush to attack the skeleton, his foot bumps on a stone and he completely misses the target.
Healing Hex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Matt Adams 259 |
The skeleton between Skivven and Trem attacks Skivven. It slashes and rips at Skivven using all four of its bony hands.
Claw 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Claw 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Claw 3: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Claw 4: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Skivven stands there as the skeleton flails about, menacingly.
Another pair of skeletons run out of the shadows. One of them also reaches the ratfolk.
Claw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21
He blocks attack by wedging his dagger in between the monster's bony fingers.
The skeleton down by Arrenopos steps closer and attacks with everything it has.
Claw 1: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Claw 2: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Damage: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1, 4) + 3 = 10
Its claws rake across the android's face and ribs.
Valeria draws her longsword and steps up next to Trem. She attacks the Skeleton between the rat and witch.
longsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
But it blocks the blow with one of its arms.
Harrash, Arrenopos, Trem, and Skivven can go.
Skivven Kraskarras |
Going to hold off posting yet in case Valeria wants to retcon, but my general plan is to continue with full defense and provide flanks since two more skeletons are closing in.
