d20pfsrd is a business (they have ad revenue and what they make through their store), so they can't post that stuff or they could get sued; archives of nethys is just a dude with a bunch of time on his hands- he's not making anything off his site and probably doesn't get anywhere near the traffic of the pfsrd so he gets away with it.

the prestige classes are on pfsrd... at least one of them you may have to use the search function to find though. they're called 'Evangelist', 'Exalted', and 'Sentinel'. the feat is too (and i linked it above). the individual requirements and boons associated with each god's obedience are not of pfsrd but can be found at the archive of nethys link i posted above. hope that's helpful for everyone :)

The core answer here comes down to use of the Community Use Policy, it really has little (if anything) to do with traffic. The CUP is what allows people to make use of Golarion-specific names, religions, etc. It is allowed so long as the source in question remains not-for-profit. The Archives is not for profit, d20PFSRD got a store and became for profit. Simple as that. :)

Thanks for clarifying that!
iirc, i think you're actually the aforementioned 'dude', aren't you?
If so, a hearty and heart-felt thank you for all the work you put into that site- it's an invaluable tool at my home game and at least one of my PbPs!

I am such a dude, and you're most welcome! It's a labor of love and a resource I look forward to enhancing over the coming years. :) If you ever have any suggestions or thoughts about it, always feel welcome to shoot me an email: nethys at archivesofnethys.com

Thank you for stopping in and explaining! Much appreciated!

I am going to use this starting background for Shinari, perhaps altered a bit for this game, if possible.

I will then add in a level 15 'snap shot' and then, I am guessing another for 25h? or is that not really necessary?

Finally, have we potential new players undergone mythic ascension yet? Or will that occur in game?

Oh, and I will totally be making a new alias. I just like this character concept and want to experiment with it at this level. Inquisitor is one of my favorite classes, and while I have played a rather high level one before, it was a very different build and concept.

Also, how much can we add to or alter the existing cannon for our histories? I would imagine no killing off named characters, be they epic, mythic or otherwise, though I suspect the first two are more likely hands off. What else is not allowed, and more importantly, what can we do?

Finally, the Wrath AP, is the definitely not allowed to be apart of backstory, as something that's been completed? I haven't gone through it myself, but I own the books, and know some bits and pieces.

I'm looking more for what you think characters of 15th level (and by extension higher level) would 'do'. Not as much a part of a character's history.

Does it make sense that someone that is a total hermit, hates people, rarely travels outside their hidden base would make it to 15th level? How would they impact the world around them? Would they be a great hero of their nation? Leader of a merchant guild, mayor of a great city, leader of a church?

At low levels adventurers can do pretty much anything. Their impact is really pretty low.

Consider, in a given town, a petty pickpocket may be known to that ward's watch. But the next ward over probably doesn't know who he is, or care. Now, if that pickpocket starts getting good, and becomes an accomplished catburgler, with a veritable hoard of the artwork and precious jewelry of the town. BUT, the town will run out of stuff to steal. So would it be conceivable that a catburgler could rise to the ability and power of someone that is 15th level without traveling from their home city? What impact in the police and laws of the nation would they have if they were routinely robing the nobility?

Now take that same hypothetical and tell me how you think an individual would impact Golarion at 15th level. Not the exploits written into your character's background. The background of your character should reinforce the concepts noted in your views of how high level characters would work in Golarion.

*****

The History and Timeline document lists which AP's are open for use in your character's background. Wrath of the Righteous has not kicked off yet. There are already two new players that have incorporated the history of this area into their backgrounds.

*****
Mythic Ascension originally occurred in-game for the players of the time. Since only two of those are still as-is, you may assume that your ascension has already occurred.

Note that it is tier 1, and ascension was granted by your deity via their herald. An item to symbolize your ascension is required. Take a look through the Mythic Ascension document for the story behind the player's ascension, and their tokens.

How long, roughly, do we have to fully sumbit our characters? my next two days are going to be busy with work but after that I have Tuesday through Thursday off

Would it possible for a few of the active players to either repost or PM me their "how a character at 15th level would successfully exist on Golarion" submission so I can get some good examples of what's being looked for??

I have a good idea, but I would really appreciate seeing what was posted by those who were accepted.

I really want to be accepted into this game, so I want to do all I can to make the best submission I can.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's a lot of posts scattered over several different threads to sort through for other examples. Many of the AP's have end levels of 15-17. What do you think would happen after an AP?

I can be patient. I'd rather that we took the time to develop a character that would fit into the world and work with the other players well then to be accepting rushed jobs. The basic crunch for a character of this magnitude is pretty extensive of itself. Before people got too much into the crunch, I'd rather work with them on what they are thinking a game like this would be, and how they fit.

One thing I have noticed. Players that are drooling to make an uber damage dealing horror from nightmare and go rampaging from one boss to another will not like this game.

Consider this sequence:

GM: You are approaching the town of Redhill. Before you stand the main gates. At the entrance you can see several guards checking everyone that wishes to enter the town. It has been a long trek, but the fence that sold the idol resides here. Now to just find him.

Player: I roll knowledge, local. I have a +15, and rolled a total of 32.

GM: How are you finding out that information? You haven't entered the town yet.

Player: Well, I walked in and rolled.

GM: The guards ask you to stop and are collecting tolls for any magical equipment you may have.

Player: They aren't searching me. I roll diplomacy, I have a +25, ooh, my total is 41! They're my friends and let me in!

Then there is this sequence:

GM: You are approaching the town of Redhill. Before you stand the main gates. At the entrance you can see several guards checking everyone that wishes to enter the town. It has been a long trek, but the fence that sold the idol resides here. Now to just find him.

Player: I'll approach some of those waiting to get in and ask what's up. Oh, my diplomacy roll is a 22.

GM: The guards are collecting tolls on magical gear.

Player: Well, I don't want them knowing I have this sword. I'll wait and see what they are doing. My perception roll is 27.

Do you see the difference between these? One demands action based on the roll of the dice. The other describes desired actions and provides a roll of the dice.

In one of the first encounters of the game (on another thread, another GM) one of the players made a character that took down a spawn of rovagug. We're talking Tarrasque's little brother. He did this nearly single handed, and in only a couple of rounds. In pbp, this took a few days. When the player realized that it was likely going to be a while before the next battle as the other players discussed how to keep said spawn from waking up after being defeated, the player bailed on the game as it was not enough action for his character that was not built for anything but combat.

Keep in mind that the players have to build a high level epic character once. The GM has to create BBG's for each combat encounter. That's a huge workload. There isn't a handy book of epic mythic monsters to just pull random encounters from either. Therefore, ensuring that the players that join are the type that will be just as happy in the world-building, empire saving type of game that lets me, as the GM, develop an epic encounter as a climax to a story rather than this week's random encounter, is key.

This means the story of the character is going to mean as much, or more, than the crunch of the character.

Oh trust me, I am very happy without combat. The game I mentioned being my longest pbp, The Avalon Chronicles, is mostly an RP high school drama game. I love world building, be it setting up and running a kingdom or establishing a new organization/guild.

Ultimate Campaign, and its kingdom building and down time rules was like a gift from the rpg gods to me, lol.

Shinari will definitely not be just a combat machine and I have no problem working with the other PCs as well you beforehand. I just wanted make sure I wasn't under a deadline I missed.

In fact, I was wondering if it would be possible to have a working relationship/friendship with Areniel, since we are both servants of Iomedae.

Hello there Monkeygod, nice to see you again. Glad you came by and looked at our current incarnation of the game. It seems like things could definitely work out for your making that character you always wanted for this.

Heya GMV, nice seeing you too. I've had a few different epic level concepts running around, but I am really excited to do a high level Inquisitor of Iomedae. It is definitely up there as a favorite class.

I'm gonna shoot you a PM, so if you could respond, I would appreciate it.

DM,

If I decide to take levels of Paladin, how do you handle their alignment, exactly? Would I be able to be a NG Paladin by any chance?(some GMs allow that, others do not).

Still playing around with my levels, though as you said, I'm more concerned with non crunch currently.

We could definitely have a working relationship or friendship... Frankly, for us to both be this powerful and in the same church and not have some kind of relationship would be kind of unbelievable (IMO). If we shared a LE god I could see us possibly being rivals but as servants of Iomedae I have to think it would be a good relationship (unless you're planning to be somewhat heretical.... That would be a big sticking point).

Friendship works for me. We can talk more about specifics when you're a little further in development.

I can't speak for others, but (to toot my own horn) this seemed like a pretty popular rundown with Fnord.

I can't speak for Fnord, but I got the impression that he was looking to make certain that people understood that high level characters, much less epic level characters, should not simply appear in the world spun from whole cloth and devoid of attachments to it. Too frequently I've seen high or epic level characters with histories that basically make them into walking talking Terminators complete with mystery science vortex 3000 to drop them into the world. That isn't really in the spirit of the Inner Sea or in the spirit of (most) conventional settings of the last thirty years.

High level characters (NPC or PC) should have history, attachments, and achievements. They have friends, allies, and lovers. They are not mystery monk on the mountain or random guy in the tower ignored by everyone for decades. Nor should they be upstart 20 year olds without very good reason. In Golarion in particular high and epic or mythic characters are quite rare. Runelords started at 18th level and were among the most powerful women and men in the world. While I might personally feel that the level of power for a few specific beings as stated is a little too low (Tar-Baphon in particular jumped out, as his stats make him weaker than beings he is described as humiliating) as a whole Golaron harkens back much more to Greyhawk, when being a 15th or 18th level character was a really big deal. The most powerful active people in the world were in that range - and they were few and far between.

Does that mean that high level characters are always well known? No, but those who are unknown should catch people's eyes, and very rarely should someone reach the lofty heights of 15th level by coincidence (much less 25th). Robilar I thought was a great example from Greyhawk of how power and the experiences on the way towards gaining it changes people (though they later walked back his betrayal with an evil double story at the urging of his original player). Even if you don't set out to be powerful, even if you don't seek danger at he start, by the time you have made it that far you should be a world divorced from the guy who started out. You've probably picked up responsibilities wanted or unwanted. You've forced alliances and made enemies. You, in short, evolve and grow.

Anyway, that's just my take.

In any case, Fnord, my interest waned a bit before when it looked like this game was headed towards death - and as though the rolling GM schedule might break down the continuity of a high level campaign. That isn't to say I've lost interest or stopped following this, but simply that I slowed down on character generation. I've actually continued on the sly while I waited to see how things played out here.

I'd like to think that my offering satisfies this all.

Also, I'm not building an archer just for the sake of grinding through loads of 25th-level meat. Partially it's because you're all casters so for the sake of variety I'd like to try a martial, and secondly because I think this concept has promise and I've always had a soft spot for the Bellflower network.

Anyone who tries to suggest that only casters have a place at that level of influence couldn't be more wrong. Now, would I argue that you need magic to be influential? Absolutely. This is a magical setting where magic is both relatively common place and often linked to power (magic items), but partial characters, skill focused characters, or other means of power have just as much bearing. If they can't think of examples perhaps they should diversify their reading lists?

Not sure who's arguing that only casters have a place at that level. I'm sure it just came about due to coincidence, how casters scale and what people like to play.

Your comment felt a bit like you felt you needed to defend your choice to play a non-archer, and I've seen plenty if vitriol thrown around on these boards to the effect of non-casters at higher levels are jokes, chumps, and just there to clean up the mess.

Ah. No, I was more a little concerned that my building a martial came off as wanting to play a 25th-level meat-grinder, as many martials typically lack out-of-combat abilities. Mine won't, but I just wanted to state that that wasn't my intention.

Peter,

Thank you!!! your post was very succinctly what I am looking at. I believe that without players understanding what I've tried to express, and what you did express, that the game would very easily and quickly die without not just active, but proactive input and cooperation from the players from one 'battle' to the next.

GM Arkwright,

I've got no issues with you playing a melee character. I stated a concern earlier about ensuring a few things were handled. From history, I've seen where people tried so hard to prove that a straight melee character was viable that they eschewed magical gear that was not strictly applicable to their melee abilities. I.e. No means of long distance travel, no networks, etc. Those very things that Peter mentioned are desirable in something other than a "walking talking Terminator" (yes, I'm gonna steal that line!).

So just as my wizard has expended some effort, gear, and capabilities to have a minimal melee capability, I do believe that melee characters at this level do need to have magical gear not directly related to increasing their damage output. At least for this game where there is an expectation of world travel.

Thanks for the sentiment; just to clear up quick points, my character will be primarily a RANGED character, and no desire to avoid magical items; that s@@# be far too essential.

This post

Brav-freaking-O, my man! I totally love this post. Now THIS is what the game should be about.

I was recently in a high level game(20th) where I was... let's just say it was clearly stated by others in said party that because my character was NOT "optimized" he was pretty much pointless.

So it's nice to know that there are other folks out there that like to play the game with "life" to it instead of a bunch of numbers that going around destroying everything they come across in one round. Man that is absolutely awesome to read.

The story should always outweigh the mechanics. Otherwise, and as far as I'm concerned, you might as well be playing a token from a board game.

Sorry to intrude, but I had to give a shout out to this.

Beyond the various posts made by Peter, I am unsure what else I could add, without speaking about specific things Shinari has accomplished.

If that's what you are looking for, I have plenty in mind, but I felt you were asking for generalities, which has left me stumped. I don't want to come across as basically repeating what Peter posted.

Monkeygod, if you need to use your character's history, do so from an outsider's viewpoint. What would the headlines look like?

Also, since you are looking at Iomedae, have you considered where you will be basing from? I already have two players in Mendev. If you are, I may have to consider converting WotR to epic (egads).

I had said earlier Nirmathas and I think I'll stick to that, though maybe Lastwall.

I was considering Mendev, but since two players are from there already, I can take a different area to hail from/be based out of, so as not to crowd one location. And definitely no need to make your life more difficult via having to convert Wrath to epic.

Quick question,

Has this group done anything in game yet with the Pit of Gormuz?

shhh, the pit is coming...

Did you have ideas for it?

Apart from feedback on playing a martial, any feedback on Thak as a character?

I did, yea. Well, not the Pit itself, the town of Gormuz.

I own Mythic Realms, so was a bit inspired there. Should this be moved to PM? lol

Also, you gave me a rather interesting idea:

DOOT, DOOT, DOOT, DOOT, DOOT!!

THIS JUST IN TO THE GOLARION NEWS NETWORK:

A new bastion of safety, The Keep of the Shining Lady in northern Nirmathas, has officially opened its doors to all those seeking refuge!! Be ye from Nirtmathas herself, or fleeing the horrors of Nidal or Lastwall, or seeking freedom from tyranny of any sort, all are welcome at the Keep.

DOOT, DOOT, DOOT, DOOT, DOOT!!

THIS JUST IN TO THE GOLARION NEWS NETWORK:

An Aasimar by the name of Shinari Dawnbringer, has begun seeking information and tips regarding the location of the fabled Truecrown of Iomedae. He claims he will pay a hefty sum to any verified intel on the artifact.

DOOT, DOOT, DOOT, DOOT, DOOT!!

THIS JUST IN TO THE GOLARION NEWS NETWORK:

For all those seeking a safe haven in the undead nation of Geb, a small, fortified outpost at the southern junction of the Ananir and Jaadja rivers has been established for those who can escpae the deathly rule of the Blood Lords.

More to come later!!

Arkright- I think I missed the link for Thak... I'd be glad to give some feedback if you want to relink it.

Monk/Inquisitor sounds interesting... You haven't given a ton of info to comment on though. With hardly any casting ability you'll have to be wise about magic item selection (you'll probably want/need means of teleportation, flight, etc), and with the background you've written you'll need to take leadership.

Wasn't planning to do anything otherwise. Level 25, I'll have enough cash for it.

Reckon I've got promising enough fluff to start working on my crunch, or should I try for a more complete backstory first?

That's more of a GM question... If he's cool with everything you have so far, I would think that's plenty to get started... If he wants a bunch of revisions you'd probably wanna do that first.

Can you just relink it?

GM Fnord, I'm gonna PM you shortly.

Edit: Sent!

Sorry guys, had training and meetings for the last couple days.

GM Arkwright, can you relink your back story so I don't have to go searching for it?

those will be a lot easier for people to use if you create actual links (inside brackets do "url=" and then that whole long string, then outside the bracket type what will contain the link like 'background, part 1' or whatever, and then end the link with [/url] )

Arkwright,

One of the core premise' of the game is that the characters are seeking immortality.

If you are already immortal, how are you tied into the group?

Good aligned guardians is primarily a means of keeping out selfish evil characters and providing the GM with a theme for encounters.

I'm thinking Shinari was born in 3801, in Ustalav, the year the Shining Crusade established a foothold there. Around the age of 15 or 16, he joins the Crusade, and in 3827, during the battle the sees the Whispering Tyrant imprisoned, Shinari is himself trapped via a Soul Bind spell.

Then, in 4606, the year Aroden dies, his gem is shattered, and he's mysteriously brought back to life. He later finds out it was Iomedae, whom he knew from her mortal days and their time during the Shining Crusade, that brought him back to life to serve as her mortal champion/agent.

Thoughts on this?

Sorry, I forgot to include the post where I realized that the 20th level monk ability isn't immortality. Aware not immortal.

Working on a more complete backstory now.

Think I'll drop out, having difficulty coming up with a backstory I'm happy with.

Best of luck.

Good morning all!

@GM Arkwright, Sorry to see you go, happy gaming!

@monkeygod, sounds good to me!

Awesome!, I am the excite! Got lots of cool ideas and such running through my head.

Just curious, if I were to want some type of flying, special, magickal mount, would I need to use Leadership and have it me my cohort? Or could there be another way to get it?

I ask cuz I would prefer my cohort to be a sort of high priestess.

Also, Areniel, PM incoming.

What did you have in mind?

I believe there are several ways to get mounts, depends on what you want and how you are wanting to get there.

Well, I'm thinking of taking Warpriest for 8 levels, possibly. If I do, I'm going to go with the Divine Commander archetype, which at six level grants the mount the Celestial template. I'd kinda like it to be able to fly, if I went that route.
