Venssa hesitantly gets onto the boat. She keeps stomping on the deck, as if unsure if the vessel is safe or not.

"I am Venssa."

Hansyn comes running down the path to the dock. He had spent most of the night too excited and unable to sleep. When he finally did fall asleep, it was late causing him to oversleep. Cursing to himself, now as he was hustling down the path, he is relieved the boat has not left without them.

Catching his breath as he arrives, he springs lightly aboard deck. Looking around, the dwarf seems to be the only person he doesn’t recognize. ”You are the Captain? I’m Hansyn Vargidan, I’ll be traveling with Lodric.” After the dwarf introduces himself a second time, Hansyn nods and looks to where to stow his gear and sleep.

Aldelenna checked, re-checked, and then checked her gear again. There was a lot more trepidation involved in this leaving. Excitement, to be sure, but more fear, because once the boat pulled away to the horizon, "home" would be only a memory. Pulling her pack onto her shoulders, after the quadruple check, she hugged everyone at the Silvers long and tight. Even Trelvar, hung over, and surly, but Asina she hugs the longest and the tightest. She whispered in her ear, "Don't fret, sister, you can handle everything this place can throw."

Walking the short distance to the docks from the tavern caused the butterflies in her stomach to do a jumping dance, but seeing Fin, Cole, and Venssa on the deck of the Black Mist causes her to smile, and her butterflies to calm.

"Good morrow!"[b] She calls to the dwarf captain of the barge. [b]"I'm Aldelenna Dusksong, a minstrel of some local repute. I'm part of Lodric's retinue." She says and then offers a quick bow to both the captain and her supposed employer. "Permission to come aboard captain?"

"Ah, Miss Venssa, I assure you, it's quite sturdy." The captain nods toward the cargo hold. "I assure you, what we're transporting is, on the whole, a whole lot heavier than any of you."

The captain looks to Lodric. "Magic, eh? Can't see your father being much thrilled by that. But with all the faith barges, I'll be glad for it should the need arise. Your father's well, I trust?"

He hasn't time to answer before he's nearly bowled over by the excited rush of Vargidan messenger boy. "I see you have a new messenger boy. He seems excitable. Yes, yes, boy. You can stow your gear in the cabin." He waves towards what appears to be the only door. But the remainder of his words are still to Lodric. "We'll all be sharing, I'm afraid. There's plenty of room. I've had Ewem rig a privacy curtain for changing. I'm afraid he'll give the ladies an eyeful at night, nothing will make that man wear bedclothes. But it's a pleasant eyeful, as I understand it, and he won't bother anyone."

Walren gazes at Aldelenna. "Oh, boy. You beautiful boy." He pats Lodric on the chest. "You didn't say we were entertaining proper ladies." The captain bows. "Dear lady, welcome to the Black Mist. I will do what I can to ensure your travel is calm and sweet. The cabin is there. We suffer some for comfort, I fear, but my lady is a smooth traveler, and she'll get us there."

Following the others below decks to stow his gear, Hansyn is unphased by just about anything derogatory said to him. He is quite confident that he belongs here and he knows the others will see it in time.

Coming back topside, he begins to wonder ”What do you do on the boat to pass the time?” he says wondering to himself the same things. any fishing poles to be seen? In his wanderings of the barge he will also check out the galley to see what kind of shape the kitchen he will be receiving from was in.

Captain Walren seems genuinely appreciative of the added muscle. "Under the stars is fine. It's always good to have someone on deck. In the normal course of things, either Ewem or myself is always up here. Barge travel may seem slow, but it's faster than you think, and the river can betray you fast too."

He seems to be watching the shore, and mutters something under his breath. "Eight days, ranger. Most is on the river, but the last half the journey is on the lake. That's where the most danger lies. Pirates there are. But worse, faith barges out of Razmir. Think of the lake as their own. They'd like it to be. As for interesting sights... the wood itself is beautiful, but I think the lake... it's something to behold. Closer to seeing an ocean than you're likely to get this far inland."

To clarify - the cabin is level with the deck, built to take up approximately the back third of the vessel. The hold is below deck, though it's clear some covered pallets are roped down on the deck as well.

Finlogan:

The cabin occupies the back third of the barge deck, a twenty x twenty foot space. There are cots along the wall and a small privacy curtain in one corner provides a place to change clothes and from the looks of it, a small basin to wash. The cabin also has a simple stove, vented out the ceiling, and a dwindling supply of provisions. It's clear they originally prepared for only two on the journey. A small trap door leads down into the hold. The main access is a grate accessible from the main deck, big enough to hoist the pallets up with some pulleys and a few strong men (or more likely horses). The pallets are sturdy, and no doubt heavy, laden with ingots of some sort of metal outbound from Skelt.

Hansyn:

There do indeed seem to be some sticks rigged up for fishing. Rather primitive from the looks of it. You have to hope you're not relying on the fishing for food on the way! The galley is only a simple stove. While this is better than the fire at the camp of the returning heroes, it's a far cry from the proper kitchen he's used to. But running messenger missions for Arnama has gotten him somewhat accustomed to occasional 'slumming it' when it's for a good cause.

"As always captain, it is a pleasure to see you. It certainly is refreshing for this to happen outside of my father's dusty old study."

He smiled as the dwarven captain's tone changed so quickly when in the presence of the fairer sex. A small part of him said that he should keep that in mind when haggling over lumber prices. A larger part of him told that small part to shut it.

"I will go now and stow my belongings. I am sure that my companions here are all dying to meet their new captain, so I will leave you all to it."

Being half-naked doesn't appear to have stopped the scarred Kellid from returning carrying bulging sacks of provisions.

"Ah, good, Ewem, good." The captain pats the man on the shoulder. Glancing about and counting on his fingers he nods to the deckhand who drops the bags and faster than you'd have thought possible has the ropes loose, and is launching himself back onto the barge. The initial pull of the river pulls all of you a bit off balance, but it steadies quickly.

Grunting, Ewem gathers the bags of provisions and heads into the cabin.

"Fresh meat was planned for, young ranger. Though it will last only a few days, even with this chill before it becomes risky to eat. After that, it's what fish Ewem can catch, I fear, unless you can fell a large bird at just the right time.

Captain Walren heads to the tiller. His hands are firm, steady. He smiles. If happiness in your job is a measure of a man, this is a man who chose his job well.

IN THE CABIN
A large man, shirtless and glistening with a fresh coat of sweat, appears in the door. His hair is wild and unkempt, his skin scarred in the fashion of Kellid barbarians. Even in the chill of winter he wears only loose cotton that covers from waist to just below the knee.

He looks at Hansyn and there's a glint in his eye, but he carries a number of large sacks over toward the stove. Most he puts in the small pantry, but a few he hangs out a porthole, securing the rope to a post inside. It creates a draft, but it's not hard to guess the items inside are perishable.

Hansyn thinks about it for a moment. Inadvertently the man had asked Hansyn a question that the boy was not prepared for. What did he do indeed? The two rangers obviously had thier roll to play as guardians, Aldelenna brought social grace with her, Hansyn assumed the forest gnome was some kind of healer, and Lodric was at least for this part of the voyage, a ticket to ride. That left Hansyn. What would be his role to play? For now, he would stick to the plan. ”I’m a messenger.” He may spend this entire trip trying to answer that question, and then again he may find his role sooner than anyone expects.

Captain Walren stands at the rudder. Ewem, who emerges shortly back onto the deck, seems to be in charge of the sails. This means Fin's comfortable spot is also one filled with tales of travel along the river. Walren doesn't seem the sort to embellish, not to Fin... though Fin suspects a bit of creative expounding might happen if he were up front, where Aldelenna was making her beautiful music.

Cole finds the lower deck where the doors to the cabin are found, to have room to pace. He's also suspicious. There are marks on the deck, from arrows and even the occasional sanded and nailed repair of an ax mark. A soldier, it takes him only a few dozen circles of the deck to realize they've been arranged for cover. Maybe Walren wasn't kidding about the dangers when you reach the lake...

Although the pace of the barge seemed ponderous at first, once the sails caught wind and the current helped the beastly craft get going, you realize you are traveling faster than horseback. This is evident to no one more than Aldelenna, whose hair whips alongside her face as the notes of her music conjure the phantom colors in the waves.

Venssa finds the most comfort in the center of the boat. Rivers are part of the wild, but traveling this fast, she cannot sense the current, and the wood at her feet is dead. But the iron in the ingots whispers in forgotten keening that reminds her poignantly of her menhir and her commitment to keep her friends safe.

Lodric finds himself alone again with Hansyn. The boy is expertly tying up a hammock. It's no secret the boy is a scion of one of the wealthiest families in Kessen, and you can't help but wonder where he got such expertise.

Hansyn can't fail to notice Lodric puzzling over him. But he gets his hammock in place in no time. message boy. Ewem's question haunts him. Is that all he is? Is that all he means to Arnama? He grasps at his bag. Within the stolen pages of Turik's spellbook hold such promise. He'd seen a similar book, protected, cherished, in Fin's belongings. That was his special gift—noticing things. Not that his father appreciated it. But Arnama did. Maybe that was why he was here?

Standing back to admire his hammock work, Hansyn turns to regard Lodric. ”You ever made this trip before?”

Later he finds his way on deck. He doesn’t say much at first opting to watch the sailers at work. Watching the two men working through the nuances of harnessing the wind and keeping the barge’s heading. The river was wide and the wind coming from just over the right side... correction...the starboard side of the barge. Hansyn found it amazing how the two men were able to fill the sails when the wind was coming from the front portion of the barge.

Hansyn also finds himself listening the Captain’s stories. The anxious Cole causes Hansyn to wonder what is wrong and if Adelenna’s song would calm the dwarf

"Used to be mostly pirates," Walren confesses to Fin. "Now, sad to say, the faith barges are the greater danger."

Ewem squints at Hansyn. "Wind tricky. Cargo heavy. Even little boost help."

The first day is exciting. The barge is a new experience, and Captain spins a yarn for whoever will listen, though Fin gets the brunt of those stories, save for a spell when Ewem takes charge instead, and Walren wanders to the front to regale Aldelenna with his stories... and with many compliments to her music.

By the second day the voyage is getting routine. Fresh meat is replaced by fresh fish on the menu—Ewem proving himself more than competent with the simple fishing pole and line.

Walren's stories become more pointedly about the dangers of the lake. Along the river, you reckon, it must be safe enough. He speaks of occasional bandits, but you realize the boat travels rather fast, and does not tire, which means any attack by bandits would struggle except in those rare places where the river slows to a meandering pace.

On the third day you wake to a sizzling smell of bacon rashers on the stove. Ewem stands, bare assed at the stove. Walren had not been kidding even a little when he said that the Kellid deckhand slept in the buff. It seems he cooks breakfast that way too, which is a fact you could have lived without knowing. His loose cotton pants are hung over a chair—wet, you realize... and water still runs in rivulets along the scarred and muscular frame. A small barbed spear, bloody, sits beside the stove and you realize along with bacon there are fresh hunks of fish in the skillet. You don't recognize the species from the oversized heads, but you're certain they weren't caught with a pole and line.

Ewem inhales the smoke, but it doesn't reach you, venting quickly out into the winter air. "Wake soon. Reach lake today. Need good meat. Be ready."

"Razmiran is on the lake. Their missionaries, if you want to call them that spread the word of their god. Their methods are simplistic, if effective: accept the word of Razmir, or die on the blades of the faithful." Walren shakes his head sadly. "It is not like the gods we know, this living god of theirs. Ewem got some of his scars from one of those foul vessels, refusing to give up his belief. The men who held him were unprepared for a man who catches the fish of the lake barehanded. He escaped. But not without their torture first."

Ewem grumbles. "Not like masked men."

Aldelenna's playfulness brings a blush across the whole of Ewem's body, and enough of a reaction for him to swiftly cover himself with the freshly dried cloths. "Useful magic. Most magic stupid. Only destroys." Then he smiles. "Best kind fish. Food."

The day itself quickly becomes rainy, and Ewem and Walren take turns retreating, soaked, near the warmth of the stove. Flakes of white are mixed in with the water on their clothes.

Ewem strides in as the captain once again takes control. The sail is down, but the rain has the river gushing and if the lack of a sail is affecting your speed, you can't tell.

"Reach lake today." Ewem declares. He looks pointedly at Fin and Cole. "Now danger can come. Watch always!"

Venssa has grown slightly more comfortable riding on the dead wood vessel but still keeps to herself for most of the time. She calls down birds and asks them questions about the area and if anything 'odd' has occurred recently. Every morning she blesses a small bunch of berries and eats one while distributing the others to the rest of the crew and her friends. In this way, she helps slow down the use of the supplies and can supplement the fish caught by Ewem.

The lake is not a sight you prepared for or even could have. They call it a lake, but the word does it no justice. It might as well be an ocean, vast and seemingly endless. Knowing it is not makes no difference. The water seems to go on endlessly.

Only Lodric and Walren seem unaffected. Ewem—he just seems nervous, always on the balls of his feet and moving. You notice that the fishing spear that has always been in a corner is now always in easy reach.

Walren stays on top of the cabin, steering and watching that endless water. You note he keeps the shore in view—distant, but in sight, at all times.

On the lake, the wind is bitterly cold, and the rain is more often snow. The deck feels slick and unlike the pace of the river, here there are waves, rocking the boat and making that unsure footing dangerous.

"Keep sharp! All of you!" the captain calls. "Any sight of sail, you call out. We'll need to mark the colors."

Finlogan's pale skin flushes crimson after Aldelenna's kiss. After the experience in the tomb and the excitement of the new trip, they had had no time alone. He knew he had changed from the half-elf who entered that tomb. And he figured that she had too. But all those thoughts changed in an instant, wobbling his knees and making his head swim.

"Um, yes. The river trip has been pleasant," is all that he could manage to say, before his words jammed in the back of his throat hidden by a contented smile.

Upon the lake, Finlogan stays atop the cabin with Walren keeping a vigilant eye on the horizon.

Hansyn finds his way to the upper sections of the deck. He wanted to get a better look at this “lake” that seemed to stretch on like an ocean. Neither of which the boy had seen in his few years. Once there, he says the familiar words of command that shifts his cloak into something more appropriate. Pulling his thick woolen hood over his head he moves up closer to his gnomish shipmate. ”Hello. My name is Hansyn.” he squats down, keeping an easy balance even with the rocking of the ship. ”Thankyou for the berry.” he pauses for a few moments to let the introduction settle before asking the question really on his mind. ”Are you actually talking to the birds? My family talk to animals too but it’s usually one specific animal, thier familiars.” Not wanting make Vanssa unfortable, he keeps a respectable distance between them.

Venssa smiles at the young human and beckons him to move closer.

"Thank you Hansyn. I am Venssa and yes I can talk to animals. My people have a way with animals, but my connection with the earth gives me an even deeper understanding of our animal friends. It is not quite like your attachment to a familiar, however. At best that is a contract between a willing partner, and at its worst servitude to a hostile master...slavery if you will. I am sure that those you know are the latter as opposed to the former."

The day passes, and the feeling is tense. Walren seems concerned, though whether its the value of his cargo or the likelihood of pirates, you can't be sure.

It's nearing dusk when Fin and Cole note a sail on the horizon. Ewem is quiet, but it's clear from the way he shifts the sail on the barge that he's seen it too.

Finlogan and Cole:

The ship is far in the distance, but as rangers of Nirmathas, it's impossible to mistake the flag. Molthune. Privateers, pirates, or simply soldiers of that enemy of the people, you know what it means—this can't be good.

"Sail. Molthune. Captain, does anyone fly false flags?" Finlogan asks Walren.

"How do we play this?"

I guess we prepare to take out as many as possible from range. Captain, is there any pitch and rags to fire flaming arrows or a long range weapon you are hiding?

Aldelenna sets the string of her crossbow into place and loads a quarrel. "Just point me where you want me boys. I'll plug 'em full o' holes! If they need plugging that is." She winks and then looks for a good position from which to fire.

The captain shakes his head sadly. "If they fly the flag then Molthune is growing brave in their war. Use the ingots as cover if you can. They'll turn away a bolt, I reckon, though my profits may take a hit, my life is worth more."

Ewem grunts and shifts the sail.

"Their boats aren't the best quality, but heavy with iron as we are, they'll catch us, I'll wager. See there? They're readying crossbows. Some bow fire might hold them back... it'll have better range."

At Cole's comment Walren nods. "Ewem. Repair. Sailcloth and pitch." Ewem anchors the sail, locking in their direction and disappears down the hatch. Walren looks at Cole. "It's not a bad plan lad, but if they damage the boat and you use our repair supplies, we'll be dead in the water."

In the distance, the Mothuni vessel seems to get closer.

"Wait. You want me to fire first?" Finlogan asks.

Listening to the captain, Hansyn’s flick from the dwarf to Ewem and then to Fin when he asks his question. Quietly but quickly the boy slips back down below decks to grab his bow and weapons.

Coming back above decks a short while later, mentally prepareing himself for what he may be about to do. ”I will do my part and show them that I can pull my weight.” He thinks they himself.

Venssa looks over the other ship and stamps her foot in frustration.

"I cannot do anything until they are much closer. Sorry, but once in range I can set their ship on fire if you want...but they need to be at least 60' from me."
