This post is for these users who showed interest in Rise of the Runelords.
I'll be DMing and it looks like we want to do a PbP, as some party members don't have reliable access to other means like Roll20 or other applications. Most likely with a thread here on paizo.
You can PM me for more information if you have specific questions for me personally that you don't want to spam the group with.
I'm new to online games, but have years in the physical realm so bear with. I'm told one of the most accessible ways to run online games includes user-editable google docs spreadsheets for maps, where you can edit and show me what square(s) you are moving to/ looking at/ hiding from. If anyone has any comments on better ways to run, by all means let me know.
We'll be starting ROTRL Anniversary Edition for Pathfinder in the very beginning as if you had never heard anything about the game. If you don't have access to that book or pdf, PM me with the subject [book info (Book Name)-(topic/page #/point of reference)]. I'll gladly share snipits that will help you guys. I plan on doing so in game anyway.
As for house-rules: I'm open about this. For the sake of making things easy for everyone to follow, I want to have a page for the rules we are using (most likely a Google Docs page). I personally like the Revised Action Economy system from Unchained as well as some its other optional rules (fractional base system, Variant Multiclassing, Background Skills) that I find really improve the game. I'm aware that there are some hiccups in the Action System because of how noninclusive of certain abilities it is, if you have any questions about how something would work, just PM me with the subject [rules hypothetical] and I'll answer. If anyone doesn't want to use those rules, or wants to suggest another rule systems please feel free to post it, and if it gets enough favorites from the group we'll incorporate it. I'm pretty easy going as far as the group goes, I want everyone to have fun, so I try not to be too draconian about the way the game is played. I stick to the rules, that way there isn't too much confusion on how certain things work.
For characters: I want you guys to want to play the characters you make, so I try not to be too restrictive, but I try to get everyone to be built equally in terms of depth. I played a lot of 5e and I really like the character background stuff, specifically where the role playing is concerned. I would prefer if every character had three traits and a drawback. Follow the rules on traits for all traits taken on creation (no two racial, combat etc.). Classes can come from any paizo. Same with feats. Traits can come from anywhere except a different campaign, so the only campaign traits come from either ROTRL, or the APG campaign traits (which I think were the same). If you are not sure about what traits or drawbacks to take, here is a character generator for you. Traits are here for reference. And drawbacks are here. I want your character to have a name, and some sort of personality, if it's a whole characterization from birth, or just a single quirk.
Stats or Point-Buy? I personally think point buy is the devil, and I like 2d6+6, reroll 1's. I'm pretty liberal on rolls, so I don't need proof, but I want you to be honest. If you want to use point buy, 25 points.
I like the alignment system from Unchained as well. The Variant Alignment from Unchained makes things like paladin alignments obsolete, so I like to include that, with the alignments applying to Outsiders.
So input on character generation should be the first thing you guys post, then we'll make some characters.
Let's have fun.

2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 2) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 4) + 6 = 13
Okay, so nothing over the top, but everything all rounded. I think I shall edit Daelric Morieth and apply him to this campaign. He is a Dwarven Paladin of the (Stone Lord Archtype).
Kerri Corynian |
Core Dwarf? I won't be using a Duergar if that is what you mean?
I might change around some of the Alternate Traits, I will have a look tomorrow when I have more time. Just had a quick check at Stone Lord and realised just how bad it really is ... I will still stick with it though. It is better for the character and flavour.

Here's my aforementioned exploiter wizard:
Kiera Videns, female human exploiter wizard
I have a couple other concepts as well, depending on how the group falls out -- a human gunslinger or a half-elf witch (built for healing & support).
Also, I'd like to speak up on Kerri's behalf, that she's been a congenial, active, frequent poster, very invested even in the early stages of putting together a game (as she built a character for a Kingmaker game that I set up).

Thank you for the good word Jesse. I in turn would like to say the same about you, always quick to respond to questions and posting frequently.
Daelric is primarily a Defender, the sponge of the group. So his Offensive abilities will leave a bit to be desired. I should have him adjusted for this rulset by tonight.
Gold : 5d6 + 10 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 1, 2) + 10 = 20 ... 150 GP it is then, not sure I could get by on 20!

Hello all,
I asked the DM if this was a closed recruitment and to my delight he said he may consider a 5th. Being a potential 5th, I will defer to the 4 originals to choose their preferred classes/roles before deciding anything else.
That being said, if 5 is an issue I will step away and wish all of you a good game.
In the meantime let's see what the dice gods think (2d6 + 6, re-roll 1's):
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12 => 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16 => 16
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 4) + 6 = 12 => 12
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13 => 13
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 5) + 6 = 14 => 14
2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16 => 16
Re-Roll "1" 1d6 ⇒ 1
Re-Roll "1" 1d6 ⇒ 1
Re-Roll "1" 1d6 ⇒ 5
Ok that's really nice...

Hey Talomyr, glad to see you again. Will this be another PbP duo? This is another great player who is very responsive and good at Roleplaying. I thought I rolled good stats, but yours are amazing! I can't believe you managed to get 3 16's!
Just so for clarification, Daelric is a Dwarven, Stone-Lord (Paladin) and is the tank. Will have to find a way to increase his damage output at some point though.
I am stuck between 3 feats, Toughness, Tower Shield Proficiency and Toxic Recovery. Depending on the other characters chosen, I shall choose accordingly. Other than that, just waiting to hear back from the GM about my previous question and if he allows it, then I shall be taking a Trait and Drawback.

This is Kerri posting, Daelric is mostly done. Just need to sort out Feats, Traits and Equipement. The back-story is there as is everything else.
GM, am I allowed to grab anything from the "Dwarves of Golorian" book?
Yes.
On mobile right now I'll update everything when I get home.Jesse Heinig |
Brilliant, I shall try to decide which Drawback to go with then. I know the trait already. Maybe you guys could help me, I am thinking of either Pride or Vain. Pride makes more sense for a Dwarf who is in a elite religious order ... but Dwarves are very vain about their beards ...
I feel like Pride has a little more juice in terms of creating potential interesting but non-destructive group disputes, and also a solid hook for something that is a character flaw for a paladin that would challenge you with respect to your code of conduct.
Talomyr |
Jesse and Daelric, thank you both for the vote of confidence, seeing the two of you among the players for this game was certainly one of the primary reasons I asked the M_MM if this was an open recruitment, as both of you have been very good to roleplay with in our previous/current other games.
@Daelric - As to your drawback, I have to agree with Jesse, Pride is just too flavorful to pass up for this one...especially as paladin. Just remember "Pride comes before the fall".

Just wanna know if I should play the wizard, the healing witch, or the gunslinger (who is probably closer to a rogue/skirmisher/trapfinder than a fighter).
Right now the group seems to be:
* Kerri: Daeric, dwarf paladin (stonelord) -- tank
* Awenydd83: aasimar bard -- support?
* Ritterton: Volkar Glanral, dwarf alchemist -- support
Plus the possibility of one more person.

Nope. May need some help adjusting to the unchained action rules, but I have the book and have looked over the chapter. One singing half-angel, coming up!
@Jesse: 1) Play what make you happy! Thats why we are all here, isnt it?
2) I will be singing while fighting, and I took CLW, and a trait to give me Disable Device.. he really kinda just evolved into a hyper-do-everything type.
Edit.. having some bit of trouble with the character software I am using messing up the PDF output.. I will figure it out in the morning...

While the character is very much a work in progress, here is the link to the Cleric of Desna that I am working on, Andrezi Zeldana.

I'm currently toying with ways to make the maps interactive and functional, while still being able to use the images in the book for a more immersive game. Hopefully I'll have everything figured out so we can officially start sometime in the next day or so.
Is everyone pressed with their character? Is everyone (character wise) accounted for?
master_marshmallow |
I am all done, just let me know if anything seems off to you.
I remember a while back while I was in a PbP, the GM posted a picture of the map (from the books) and we were able to move little tokens around to dictate where we were on the map. Might be worth looking into.
That's exactly what I'm trying to do.
I would like to try a test run here, to see what our lag times look like. To the right of the map I have your character's name, underneath that could you try typing something like "move here" or "perception here" to see if this form of map working functions for us?We may be able to go back and forth between this map for a visual, and then the forum posts for the description of the turn.
I can post everyone's name in order of initiative, and we can use it to keep track of rounds (making it easier to track per round effects).
We may also be able to use it as a pseudo chat box, if we do it right.
master_marshmallow |
Awesome, then I guess ask we really need is to get everyone's character image uploaded.
It should be editable for everyone, once we make sure it works for everyone we will be able to start.
You should be able to click on and move the image of your character, so the grid dimensions of the spreadsheet should not matter, unless we want it to.
Feedback required.

Oh sweet! Where did you find a map for that?!?! I searched all over for that when I ran the campaign! If you need the RotRL minis, I can email you the PDF.. I purchased it for my campaign, and it makes things a lot easier.
One suggestion, if you HAVE a map, you can upload it to google slides and then everyone will be able to update and move around, even from a mobile device. You can post the links in the Campaign Info tab and that will place it in the header for everyones quick access.. it will also show if you use Wayfinder or other mobile apps.
With this, we can each move our tokens and edit things, if we need clarification or whatever, we can add arrows or type on the map, whatever needs to be done.
PM me if you need some help with all of that..
Also, it isnt showing on my character sheet, but I took the hedonistic drawback.
