I've been thinking that my backstory didn't give much of Uruelleth's voice, so I decided to do a little vignette to help me explore his character a bit more as he comes to terms with what he is.

Homegoing:

Uruelleth tugged at his 'tunic,' the light, airy shirt that hung loose across his chest but did not chafe like the rough-spun fabric he had been used to in his previous lives. Soft. He hated the feeling of it, afraid it was making him soft.

Never. I'll never let that happen, he thought as he stared at the receding shoreline from the sterncastle of the large vessel on which he had brokered passage. Lastwall dwindled in the distance, and far beyond it, the Hold of Belkzen, his home for the last 45 years.

He wished for the weight of his armor, but walking around the decks of a ship with a heavy breastplate on was foolish and drew attention. So the armor, bought with the gold he received by turning in the bounty on his own head, rested in a pack along with his other belongings. His falchion, however, remained on his hip. He would not be parting with that, regardless of the stares.

"Is that an orc sword?" came a high voice from behind in Elven. He was again grateful that he had spent a great deal of effort learning the languages of his enemies. He turned and saw a elf child, no more than thirty-five, he surmised, staring at the wicked blade he bore.

He eyed the youth, probably a boy, considering his interest in weapons, though still possibly a girl. He was going to have to figure out how to tell the difference. "It is a sword, yes. But an orc sword? Do I look like an orc?" he asked, turning it around on him.

The youth beamed. "Well of course not! But my father says the orcs use swords like that: big, heavy and slow. Did you kill an orc to get that sword?"

Uruelleth folded his arms and leaned back against the railing. "I've killed orcs," and other things, "but not to get this sword. And it can be faster than your father thinks. Don't assume just because something is big it cannot be fast."

The youth nodded, absorbing the lesson. "Did you fight in Belkzen?"

Uruelleth could not help the smile that grew on his face. "Yes, for many years."

"My aunt and uncle fought for Lastwall. They said the orcs kill each other as much as we kill them." he said matter-of-factly. "How many orcs have you killed?"

His smile faded. "I... didn't keep count."

"More than a hundred?"

Uruelleth's face soured. "More than twenty. But I killed other things, too."

The youth brightened. "Oh! Like ogres and trolls?"

And Elves and Humans and Dwarves... "Something like that." To change the subject, he drew his falchion with a flourish. Then he flipped it around and presented it hilt-first to the child. "Would you like to feel what an orc carries into battle?"

Wide-eyed, the youth took the sword into hand, but the curved blade dropped immediately to the deck with a thunk. Uruelleth snorted and reclaimed the blade.

He was just about to sheathe the blade when a shout from across the deck caught his attention. "Elledel! Where have you--? Oh."

Uruelleth's breath caught and his adrenaline surged as he realized he stood over an elf child with a naked blade. But when the elven adult appeared from below decks, he seemed unconcerned. "Elledel, food is ready in the galley. Go now," the adult ordered, sending the youth scurrying off. The two elves eyed each other. "Belkzen?"

Uruelleth cleared his throat. "Yes."

"Thank you for your service to Lastwall. I hope Elledel didn't bother you overmuch."

He shook his head. "No, he was fine."

"Good. Well, home is only a few days away. I'm sure you're anxious to see Kyonin. Well met."

Uruelleth nodded as the elf headed below decks. Home. Yes, it's a few days away. And getting farther away by the second.

That's quite an array of party selections. I don't envy the process of having to choose!

Quovex's profile is, to the best of my proofreading knowledge, complete. The people in his background which have gone missing can provide hooks in tying him to plot twists, and I hope the development in his relationships and events - either through his father's ties to the government or the travel incident with his mother or the time spent with Farraklor - have given you enough to work with, DM.

Looking forward to October 9th in anxious anticipation!

My official submission:

Gloriana 2
Utility and Transmutation Arcanist

Appearance:

Like many androids, Gloriana 2 appears human from a distance. Closer inspection reveals subtle traces of circuitry under her pale skin, and a metallic blue sheen in her shoulder-length black hair.

She wears sensible clothing without armor, and carries two long cylindrical objects holstered on her back; a well made fighting stick, and a magic rod.

Background:

Father is gone.

He had said that he would be back by nightfall, and that was 3 months, 3 days, 14 hours and 43 minutes ago. No one in the nearby settlements had seen anything suspicious. 1 day, 1 hour and 15 minutes after the appointed time of reunion, I began to search through his private journals for any information that could tell me where he had gone.

The first item of interest I learned was the true cause of my predecessor's death. Gloriana, father's wife, had been murdered by the Red Mantis assassin cult.

My father, the talented transmuter Frederick "the Wanderer" Hermand, first met Gloriana while investigating ruins in Numeria, 47 years, 3 months, and 23 days ago(further precision unavailable). He triggered her birth pod, thus he was the first person she knew, and she never left his side until she died 3 years, 1 month, 2 days, 15 hours ago. He spent 9 months, and 15 days and uncounted fortunes attempting to repair her body and reactivate her, but her soul had departed, and I was born instead. I am now 2 years, 3 months, 2 days, 5 hours, 45 minutes, and 42 seconds old. From what he has told me, I am clearly a different individual from her. For one thing, I do not possess her unique capacity for experiencing humanlike emotions.

But I digress; From my study of Father's writings, I next inferred that the Red Mantis assassin cult had murdered my predecessor in retaliation for him refusing to assist them in some endeavor. Such was not stated explicitly, but I induced as much from disparate details. From this, I discovered the true cause of the nomadic lifestyle I had always known. He had been evading discovery by the Red Mantis assassin cult since an unknown time before my predecessor's murder.

The most logical assumption is that Father has been abducted by the Red Mantis assassin cult. I have spent the last 3 months, 2 days, 13 hours, 28 minutes researching the Red Mantis assassin cult. I have sought knowledge in great libraries, ancient civic records, even unreliable folk tales. I come now to join the efforts of the Mantisbane Pact. I contribute my knowledge of the Red Mantis assassin cult, and my skill with magic that Father taught me. I hope that with their assistance, I can find my father.

You receive a +2 trait bonus on Knowledge (history) checks and it is a class skill for you. If you need clarification/expansion on any details, let me know.

Edit:

Plans for the future:

I plan on taking some item creation feats. Craft Wondrous Item at least, Weapons and Armor likely as well. Other than that, I will adapt as challenges come.

Thank you for the clarification. Updates look good.

Thank you for the vignette. I had forgotten that Uruelleth got most or all of his gear by turning in his own head for a bounty. Haha. So was Uruelleth always CN or was he CE in the past? And, if he was CE, what caused the alignment shift? Also, while reviewing your stats, I noticed you put your health at 44 (out of rage). I see the +8 from your con score and the +4 from your favored class bonus, but I'm not seeing where the last +4 comes from. I'm sure it's coming from somewhere, but your insight is appreciated.

Thank you for the submission! Is there a particular reason Gloriana 2 is unable to experience humanlike emotions? Is Gloriana 2 good at math in general or mainly at keeping tracks of date and times? You mentioned that Gloriana 2's father was a talented transmuter. Did he specialize in anything in particular? Or did he just do it really well as a profession? You mentioned the original Gloriana was found in Numeria. Where did Gloriana, Gloriana 2, and Frederick live?

GM_Zek wrote:

Androids typically have no emotions. Gloriana was the unusual one. One possibility for Gloriana 2's future is the Empathy feat.

GM_Zek wrote:

She has an accurate internal clock, and prefers precision in all things. She has no time for ambiguity.

GM_Zek wrote:

General transmuter things. Buffing, crafting, turning people into frogs. He was a wandering adventurer type. In his youth he was impulsive and too curious for his own good.

GM_Zek wrote:

Frederick and Gloriana traveled together all across Avistan in search of adventure. After Gloriana was killed, and Gloriana 2 was born, Frederick spent time travelling more often, never staying in one place for more than a few days. They were moving through central Taldor when Frederick disappeared.

Glad you like that little bit of irony. I know the rules don't work this way, but I envision Urug'dash as having been a higher level as a warlord to account for (and explain away) the negative levels that come from reincarnate, leading to a higher bounty. Plus, given that a gnoll leading an orc band would be unusual, his outstanding bounty would be even more inflated.

He was definitely CN all the way, mostly through his mother's influence (her alignment restrictions requiring her to be some flavor of neutral). He loved battle, but did not glorify slaughter. He wouldn't have had a major bounty on his head when he was an orc, since he wouldn't have been responsible for any atrocities. But becoming a gnoll made him unique, and unique is always valuable.

And thanks for catching the error on the hit points. When I realized I could use background skills to give him languages (not speaking Elven (or Orc) would have been unacceptable), I switched my favored class bonuses to hit points. But like a dunce I just moved my rage HP total to my base, forgetting that I get +8 when I rage, but I only get four extra hit points from the favored class. I'll fix that.

Backstory:
”Why does a priest of Sheyln want me to kill?” The ugly words hung in the Sheyln temple like black smoke. Usually the round, small church was full of music and laughter, but twilight was coming on now, and it was dark and nearly empty. The only sound came from the busy Oppara street outside. There were only two people inside, enjoying the fading daylight.

One was the speaker, a middle-aged man with dark skin and roving black eyes. He was wrinkled and weathered, and had an agile look despite his relaxed position and slight fat around the waist. Muscles are clearly visible under a light blue acolyte robe. This is not a man gone to seed but perhaps slightly soft. He was sitting on one of the stone benches that filled the room. A dark chest lay at his feet, studiously ignored. He is painting a canvas, using dark shades of red and brown, a gloomy landscape.

The other man sat across the room from him. An elderly man, wearing the bright multi-colored robes of a full cleric. He sat with his back to a round wall, folding bits of colored papers into elaborate shapes. A pile of finished animals, plants and buildings rests next to him, a jumble of shades.

”I said, why do you want me to kill, again?” The acolyte repeats, his voice a rough rasp. He makes an angry stroke with his brush, disturbing the scene even more.

The priest doesn’t look up from his swan when he answers, ”It isn’t what I want, Vorya. It is what is destined by the gods.”

Vorya, the acolyte snorts and stands up. The movement is fluid, practiced, smooth. It has the feeling that he could have risen to his feet from any position with grace and efficiency.

”And who are you to say what the gods have in mind? Priest Mallius, speaker to the gods?” The tone is gruff, with an edge of scorn.

The priest, Mallius, keeps his eyes lowered, but when he speaks his voice is stern, ”You think this is a coincidence? The Grand Prince puts out a call for men looking to combat the Red Mantis and here you are. One does not need to speak to the gods for that.”

”And what does the Red Mantis have to do with me?” The other man says challengingly. He puts a bit of bravado into his deep voice, ”I am a mere acolyte of Shelyn, dedicated to art and beauty.”

”Few acolytes have worked for three decades in the Guild of Wonders.” Mallius says lightly, looking up for the first time.

”Let us not speak of that.” The other man says quickly, bravado falling away. ’That was a different time, I was a different man.”

”I hope so. Few assassins serve our god.” The priest says, looking back down at his half-completed swan. ”Which makes you all the more valuable.”

’Valuable...what I did in those years. Please, don’t make me discuss them, again.” The voice is weaker now, a hint of pleading in it.

”I remember what you told me. Killing in every city from Port Peril to Caliphas, I believe you said. Ingenious murders, done for hire. The stories are coming back to me now.” The old priest sits up and leans back, eyes lost in thought, his origami forgotten.

’No, please don’t.” Vorya says, hard face looking stricken.

The priest goes on as if he hadn’t heard anything. [b”]An unfaithful noblewoman in Westcrown killed by training her own dogs to attack a certain perfume. One night you laced her bath with it, then opened the kennels as she passed to her secert boduior. Creative. Another time, you killed a cheating merchant in Oppara by poisoning an entire feast. It wasn’t deadly, a deadly poison would have been detected. Instead it just made everyone ill, and you posed as a passing healer. Once inside, you slit his throat and vanished out the back among the confusion. Inventive”[/b]

This next one actually happened in a real game of mine.

”Most ingenious was a powerful wizard in Varsia. Sealed up in his manor home for 75 years, no one could even meet him, magical wards everywhere. Quite secure. So you forged a land claim, hired a corrupt lawyer and brought it to court. The wizard was forced to leave his house to dismiss the charges. He never suspected a thing and teleported right into the townsquare. Where you were waiting. Clever.”

Vorya’s face is pale and his voice shakes, ”You do not know, the blood on my hands….The faces of those I killed...so many.”

Mallius goes on, inexorable, ”Then of course…”

”No!” Vorya shouts, his ragged voice ringing off the mosaic walls of the temple.

”There was my son.” The priest says and finally his light tone is gone and his voice too is full of emotion.

Vorya collapses to the stone bench, face in his hands.

”You killed my son, Vorya. I was in a large temple at the time, and you snuck past sixty clerics, priests and acolytes, found my inner room and murdered my son in cold blood.” the words heavy as lead. ”I had no idea how you did it. It seemed impossible.”

Vorya looks up, and his face has lines of tears, ”It wasn’t easy, but anything could be done. I was a marvel in those days...it was the part after that was hard.” he swallows and his voice stops shaking. ”I saw his face in my dreams, in my nightmares. Looking up at me, from a pool of blood. I saw you as well, crying over the body or cursing me. Every night. Then, during the day, following me, for weeks. It was too much. I left the Guild, no notice and came looking for you.”

’For forgiveness.” Mallius says, eyes locked on the hunched figure of Vorya.

The ex-killer shakes his head, ”Oh no, not forgiveness. I was after you for vengeance. I thought if I could find you, kill you..it would end it. Release me from my torment. You had moved by then, left that big temple. Instead I tracked you down to here.”

He looks around the beautiful, colorful temple. ”I found you in this very room, kneeling and praying, back to the door. It would have been so easy….but instead I feel to my knees next to you and told you everything. I cried like a child.”

The priest half stands as if to go comfort the other man, but then sits back down. Pity and shame fill his face for a moment, then Mallius masters it, knowing he must be strong. He had to push Vorya. Instead he merely says,

”I remember it well and will until I die. But perhaps we now need the man seeking vengeance, not the man who wept.”

”Why?” Vorya says harshly, looking back up, ’You forgave me, even that most heinous of crimes.”

”Yes, I forgave you, Vorya, but that is not the same as redemption. Only the gods can give that.” Mallius says gently.

”The gods!” Vorya stands up again, striding back and forth. His movements are fluid, long strides that seem to take him instantly where he needs to go.”I have spent ten years here, listening to you, obeying you like a servant.” He points to the now ruined painting.

”Yes, but I do not require a servant. I want a full and equal brother and that cannot be done until the slate is wiped clean.”

”Wiped clean, by more blood?” The man asks sarcastically, still pacing.

”You know better then anyone the terror and horror of the Red Mantis. You have told me the times you have seen them at work.” The priest says sharply.

”Yes. No doubts, no remorse, no mercy. That is the Red Mantis way. I saw it often enough in the old days.” As if against his will his eyes turn toward the black chest.

”Open it.” Mallius says, voice soft but full of command.

Vorya opens the chest, and inside is a set of clothes. They are old, stained from use and weather. Black cloth, shining leather, and a rusty mail shirt. Well-maintained, they are creased from long storage. Under the clothes gleams a set of oiled dagger blades, long and sharp. Vials of alchemical agents sit besides lockpicks and other tools of the assassins trade.

”So you want me to go back to my old life?” Vorya says, staring into the chest.

”For a greater good! You have much to redress, Vorya. Righting the scales will not be easy but killing Achaekek...that could blot out many sins. Do you think it is mere chance? Who else has the skills, the background, the desire as much as you? You were made for this job. Or the job made for you. Who knows how the gods work.”

Vorya grunts agreement, and then says, ”Will this earn me my redemption?”

There is a long pause then Mallius says, ”I truely believe so. If you do this, you can come back to me as a whole man. Your past sins have only been painted over, as if they were a bad mural. That is not good, for the bad paint always rises to the surface. No, we need to take those dark colors and make a new artwork, a new thing. You need to use your skills for this task.” He gestured to the forbidding landscape Vorya marred earlier. ”A quiet life of painting is not your task, not yet anyway.”

Vorya nods, a bit ruefully. It had been an old joke between them. Vorya had no talent for singing, painting or dance unlike everyone else in this place. Creation came very hard for him, and even this crude painting had been a heavy labor of weeks.

Millius goes on, ”And do not pretend part of you doesn’t want this. You miss the action, the thrill. Imagine that, but for a good cause.”

Vorya smiles through the remains of the tears, ”On the road again. It has been a long time.” His fist clenches on the old clothes.

”Then do it, take up this task.” The old priest urges.

Suddenly Vorya stands up straight, ”I will do it then. I swear by Sheyln, my god and by my oath to you, my redeemer, that I will do this deed. No matter what it takes, no matter what I must do, no matter where it takes me...I will see this done. Not only for me, but for the world. It will be a better place without Achaekek.”

Then Vorya’s mouth twists into a wry grin, ”Besides, it is a kindness to my old employers.”

Mallius looks confused before the old assassin goes on, ”Removing the competition.”

Party Role:
I see Vorya having a few different roles in the party. With his Clandestine Inquisition, he is very good at Bluff, Disguise, and Stealth. With a good Charisma and many abilities allowing Diplomacy/Bluff re-roll/buffs, he is quite capable of being a party face andtalking his way into guarded places. Tied with this he is a great scout/point mant. He can turn invisible for many rounds per day, combined with his constant Detect magic, few things get past him and he can lie his way out of most trouble. Not to mention his Teamwork feat, Bonded Mind, which lets him communicate silently with others in the party. Next level he gains an ability to cast Dispel Magic when he attacks, which will make him great at attacking casters or buffed threats. Turn invisible, sneak around and hit the foe in the back. Bonded Mind helps with this as well. Getting Bane next level will also help his damage output. He also has many skills and works well in that role. I worked hard to bring a realistic assassin feel to the character, in both stats and fluff. Hope I succeeded.

RP Goals/ Angles:
Vorya is a torn man. An ex-assassin he knows better than anyone what the Red Mantis is. He despises the Red Mantis for living the life he used to live, so there is some self-hate mixed in. He is slightly world weary but also misses being out in the action. Ten years of painting pictures doesn’t suit his personality, redemption aside. He puts on a bravado, hearty tone usually when dealing with people, being quite friendly and outspoken. But just underneath is the old capacity of instant action, to deal death quickly. It is something he struggles with daily. He wants nothing more then to wash away his old crimes and Mantisbane is perfectly suited to do just that. I would love to take Vorya on his journey through his past life and current danger to a retirement of true peace.

Me:
I am a long time PBP player here, and run several games where I post daily. I’ll always be around to post since I have to upkeep my own games (a few just passed the year long mark). I usually play in Solo Games (me and one player/GM) and have been looking to try a good traditional party game for awhile. There is some RP that you can only do in a group. I am a librarian in EST.

Eh, the story was good, so I'm not too worried about mechanics when it comes to your backstory. If selected, just don't expect to be able to reincarnate in the future without negative levels. : )

Thank you for the details about his alignment and deeds. If selected, that helps me know how to incorporate his backstory into the adventure.

No worries about the HP. Wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything on my end.

Thank you for submitting. Your backstory was poignant. How old is Vorya? Does he have a last name and/or family? (And, if so, are they alive?) How old is Mallius? And how long ago did Vorya kill his son?

Also, I think you may have forgotten to pick out background skills. Is there a story-based reason you went with the iconoclast archetype?

No worries, you've got some time. You definitely want to be satisfied with it yourself before submitting it.

Indeed. Thank you for the update.

Sorry, I was so caught up in the story I didn't want to bog it down with bio details!

I am picturing Vorya in his late forties, but still hale and hearty.

No last name, as he came from a poorer family in Osirion. His family were minor criminals in the Sothis underworld but Vorya moved up quickly and was dragged to that great center of crime, Absalom at a young age. He would have no desire to re-unite with them, having one on such a long journey (ethically) himself.

Mallius is an older man probably around sixty, a quiet retiring type. His relationship with Vorya is usually much warmer then that scene indicated, but Mallius was deliberately pushing him.

As noted, it has been ten years since he did his final job with the Guild of Wonders.

Ah, I did forget Background skills. I will probably go with lore: Assassins or something. Something from his past life. If that is OK with you?

As for Iconclast- Vorya has a dark edge that puts him quite out of place with Sheyln people. He desperately wants to be the carefree or wise priest but he isn't there (yet). I also felt the Iconoclast abilities (detecting magic and resisting effects) fit his background.

It was difficult building a character that got divine powers but also had a dark backstory. In my 'head canon' he had some of those iconclast powers from before he was an inquisitor for his current god (if that makes sense?). Having constant Detect Magic and later,t he ability to cast Dispel Magic on certain hits would be a great skill for an assassin who specializes in well-defended targets.

Thank you for all the details. Osirion is a good place for him to be from. And thank you for your explanation of your archetype. I see how that would make sense given your backstory. What god did he worship before?

As for your background skills, Lore: Assassins works, but keep in mind that you get 2 background skill points per level so you get more than one (at least 2).

That is an interesting question. Vorya is a practical man and did his old job more out of a sense of accomplishment then anything else. Besides, few other jobs give a no account Osirion a chance to travel the world.

I'd say probably Norgerber, only because the other assassins probably held to him (Although the Guild of Wonders has a soft spot for Abadar and Calistira that he has inherited slightly, even more so in his mellowed-out age).

At first I was thinking "Man, I really hope to be in this campaign!" Now I'm thinking "Damn...there are so many good submissions. I better not hope too much."

I'm going to drop out. Still love the story idea, but I'm in plenty of games, and I would hate to think I was taking a spot from some of these great stories. I'll use the alias for something else. Hope you guys have a good time. :)

It's really encouraging to see so much interest. I know many people (or most people) specifically made characters to apply to this campaign, but I definitely encourage those not selected to adapt their characters for other campaigns as there really are too many good ones for me to pick them all.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Now is a good time to start bribing Zek with Skittles, Root Beer, and gift cards to Subway. Lol!

I currently have M&Ms and root beer.

Now I'm really worried - I've been labouring over a submission for most of the week (inspiration has been a witch to deal with). Gaius is going to have to be beyond good now...

Look forward to seeing your submission. I don't think you're alone in worrying. If I can offer any advice, I would just say make the character that you would enjoy playing and leave the rest on the table. Then, even if things don't work out, you can at least be happy with what you submitted.

Hmm, despite writing that story, I might drop out of this. Writing a backstory in the first person isn't impossibly difficult, but I cannot tie things together in a satisfactory way, and still get the level of detail I'd be happy with, in a first person context. For instance, instead of an in depth explanation for Midnight, it comes across as an afterthought of a sentence or two. Frustrating.

Sorry to hear that, but thank you for letting us know. If you change your mind, you still have some time.

Hey that's a shame Eris, I thought you had something interesting there. Still I think I know where you're coming from, some of the recent submissions have really raised the bar. Writing a competitive submission (at least in this thread) without going on and on is hard.

Well here he is... there's a few unfinished bits, like spells, but I'll sort those if needed. And I'm certainly keen on this character so the time is well spent. Thank you to you GMZek for getting me to think about it.

Please do say if there's anything you'd like more info on etc. :)

Given that this recruitment thread has already accumulated more posts than some PBP game threads, I'd say that's a pretty good sign that the game will be a good one.

Thank you for submitting! Glad I could help. Do you plan on sticking with sorcerer levels or are you also planning to take levels in fighter? Did you have a source in mind for Gaius's impossible bloodline?

You mentioned that Gaius is from House Trevelyan. Is he from a well-off noble family? Are his parents and any other family still alive? Did you have a name in mind for Gaius's instructor? Were Gaius and Reylana married or just lovers? Was one of his parents a drow?

A good game is the plan. : )

Ended up going with Duty Bound for Garroth. I imagine he is involved in all this because Flynns connections allowed him to get him in the running. He is doing this as a favor to Flynn, even though to the hustler the whole thing is to get him out and moving again like he knows he wants.

Saw someone else mention background skills, which I had missed, so scooped up some more Profession (Cook) ranks and some Knowledge (History)

Level-wise the plan is to keep taking sorceror levels and then probably move into Eldritch Knight. So eventually Fighter 1/Sorceror 9/EK 10. Possibly less EK depending on whether taking EK levels was deemed to advance my bloodline as well as the spellcasting or not.

The source of his magic... I subscribe to the theory that every elf is capable of magic to some degree, which is why children like Gaius who don't manifest some sort of magic are pitied and generally seen as unfortunate. In Gaius' case the trauma of the Mantis attack broke through whatever innate disconnect there was between himself and magic, but did so based on powerful emotion, rather than on conscious manipulation and study as most elves do. (Hence sorcerer rather than wizard. Similar to the Wilder/Channeler dichotomy in WoT if you've read those.) If a specific source for his bloodline is required it would probably be First World in origin, given his fey sight. The First World as the home of all sorts of impossible/bizarre things makes sense for the bloodline too.

House Trevelyan is just his family - elven heralds have a tendency to high formality! His parents are alive but he's rather lost touch with them - they're wizards of good standing so a non-magical son was slightly embarassing for them, and when he resigned his Guardianship and went off into the middle of nowhere the ties were badly strained. Since he came back he's not tried to mend ties with them and they've been giving him space - which in elven terms is a few decades! :D

No idea for the instructor's name - I tend to leave a few things like that loose in case the GM wants room to get involved. I certainly can name her if you like.

Gaius and Reylana weren't married yet. He would have asked in the near future but retribution followed them to Kyonin far faster than anyone could have expected, even if they knew it was coming.

Lastly - he's not a part-drow. I picked it because I liked the idea that he sees the world in black and white and only magic shows up in colour. Mechanically I went for blended view because of the whole 'darkvision only shows things in black and white' idea seemed to make sense. Fluffwise the combination of seeing magic and the magical reconstruction of his damaged eyes has caused him to lose the ability to see in colour. His mind however interprets his 'seeing magic' as colour. Make sense? :)

Can you tell I spent more time than I should thinking about this?

Am contemplating getting Extra Traits, was wondering if Society traits are allowed?

Good to know about Gaius and Reylana. Thank you for the clarification about not being a drow. Your story-based reason makes sense.

I can definitely tell you spent quite a while thinking about that stuff.

Alright everyone, we’re entering the homestretch for recruitment. Everyone has about two days left. If you haven't already, start finalizing your backstory and any other changes you want to make to your character. You will need a backstory and a build for me to consider your character for selection.

As has been mentioned before, recruitment is open till October 9th at 1 pm eastern. Except in the event of a life-threatening personal crisis, I don't plan to alter that deadline, so please plan accordingly. Thank you all for your submissions! I’ll have a lot to consider when it comes time for selections.

I had a bit of free time when my Son had a nap and added a combat vignette too. I started off writing it in the third person, which is what I usually do for in game posts, but I ended off changing it to the first person to make it feel more immediate.

I'm probably over compensating for everyone else's submissions ;)

Do I need to worry that everyone else was listed with class and race but Vorya was not?

I'm thinking as your submission was submitted as a whole very recently, Zek just copied the name which you wrote alone on a line. Zek's been very thorough with responses to applicants so far, so I'm sure you'll get one, but I doubt your well-written application was missed.

2 days!

My apologies for the delay, folks. I was traveling most of the day for a wedding and only recently got back home.

I like your vignette. Never hurts to flesh out your character more. The only thing I wanted to note is about some of the bad guys freezing up, presumably due to your Rime Spell feat. I wanted to make sure you knew that, mechanically, you wouldn't be able to do that with burning arc till you have 2nd level spells as it causes a spell to take up a slot one level higher.

Whoops! Sorry about that. That was a purely clerical error. It is not in anyway indicative of your chances, one way or the other. I'll have your race and class listed for the final list of candidates. If it makes you feel better, you can just say that I was so overwhelmed that we finally got a 6th level divine caster candidate than I forgot to note all the details for him. : )

That should have said “till you have 3rd level spells.” If I’m missing something on that, though, please let me know.

Normally that is correct however Talivar took magical lineage: burning arc. Looks like HeroLab only shows the trait which is disappointing.

Ah, okay. That makes sense. HeroLab strikes again.

Got a little of my muse back, so putting everything together in an in depth post. Still not entirely happy with how I write in first person but at least I felt I covered most of the things I wanted to mention.

Backstory:

Money didn’t buy happiness, but it sure helped the affordability of revenge, I mused to myself, as I delved deeper into the jungle, treading carefully. It was a tad ironic, that in taking on a contract on my family, and succeeding, the Red Mantis might have sealed their destruction – or at least I hoped so, but my revenge was still some way off from being completed.

My parents were Taldan nobility, rich in status and wealth, which undoubtedly must have made them a target. Someone would have taken issue and paid the exorbitant price the Red Mantis charge for their services, but I never truly found out who as yet. I was fortunate to survive myself, being looked after by the nanny when the attack struck, therefore leaving me effectively the lone surviver. With my parents’ death, came the increased wealth I possessed, and no small amount of interest. People tried influencing, or even (later) courting me, trying to make use of my own status, fortune, although I declind them all. I could play politics with the best of them, but had no desire to mark myself out as a potential rival and suffer a similar fate as my parents, I had a goal, serve destruction on those that had taken my family away, and I would not be denied this. How though, to defeat an organisation filled with master assassin’s, far more skilled than myself in combat? My spellpower was weak, physical prowess even weaker, the chances of success were slim.

Instead, I approached the problem in a different way. The Red Mantis pride themselves on secrecy. There is so much that is unknown about them, and due to this uncertainty, it makes them difficult to combat. I decided it would be me who unearthed all their secrets. Everything they kept hidden. I would aim to know all about them, and in doing so shield myself from retaliation. Hopefully, information, out there, ready to be released should I meet an untimely end prevent retaliation, while I could increase my knowledge, learn more, and then finally set into motion a plan of revenge.

This wasn’t without pitfalls. The Red Mantis would eventually learn that I was researching them. They might abduct me, attempt to learn what I knew, or where I stockpiled my knowledge. With the vast network of spies, it would be impossible to keep my goal secret from them, but I could delay things with a decent cover story, a cloak to hide behind.

So I enlisted the Taldor Museum. I pretended to be interesting in funding archaeological digs under the disguise of searching for old artifacts of Old Taldor. I could feign interest, and I had the wealth. No-one cared how I spent my money, letting me freely hide my intentions.

During this, my studies into magic proceeded quickly. I had no aptitude for arcane magic, or relying on the strength of religion, for no god or goddess had stepped in to help my family in their hour of need. Instead, I tapped into the spirit world, the forgotten souls long since passed, to harness their strength and make it my own. Long did I search for my parents in the void, but they forever remained hidden to me, and I have since given up, expecting the Red Mantis might indirectly be preventing me from communing with them. The knowledge though, that I have been unable to obtain made refining my searches easier, I was able to learn more about my enemies. My immediate goal, was to become the foremost master on the topic of the Red Mantis. Let them see me as a threat, let them come after me. If it brought them into the open then it increased the risks, and the better the chance of a countermove.

My reverie was immediately broken as felt the rustling in my backpack, Midnight stirring himself. Midnight had been a loyal and faithful ally, ironically coming to my aid during a misadventure in a cave system on one of my archaeological digs. I had tripped a trap which had promptly blocked the way to the surface, and so, needing an alternative route, I had trawled deeper into the caves. I didn’t find an exit, but instead an ancient altar, the purpose of which I was unable to discern. It was clearly meant for channelling something, but I had no idea what. Experimenting, I channelled my own celestial spirit, curious as to what would happen. The resulting outpouring of celestial energy transformed a nearby bat, therefore creating Midnight, as I knew him. My ally proved invaluable in getting me back out of the caves, his ability to sense things my senses could not, as well as acting as a star map to help me in directing myself, allowed me to escape, and Midnight had therefore served as a focus for my magic ever since.

“Not long now” I murmured, knowing my destination was near. Iadara, was absolutely a tricky destination to find, and technically I hadn’t been officially invited, but I knew my presence would be valuable there. It wasn’t uncommon for high ranking members of society to call upon my knowledge, indeed, some weeks prior I would have met an audience had I not been waylaid by a Red Mantis attack. I certainly wasn’t going to pass up this opportunity, not after years of research. Feeling revenge close, Midnight and I wove deeper into the city.

Short Story( already posted previously):

“Welcome to Oppara” a heavily bearded man exclaimed, warmly greeting Talia, as she swept into the city, her guards behind her. Talia had protested, of course, at having to be escorted to the capital at the request of the Grand Prince accompanied by a host of guards but the men had refused to take no for an answer, insisting that her safety was the primary concern. Talia had begrudgingly accepted, fully aware that the invitation was likely to hear her latest research into the Red Mantis, something the Grand Prince had shown more and more of an interest in. Shouldering her backpack, Talia observed the guide with faint curiosity as she attempted to sidestep and weave deeper into the city.

“Err, excuse me…Talia is it?” the man asks, blocking her way carefully, before hastily holding up his arms defensively, as a guard at Talia’s side growled slightly. “Please, I was sent to meet you at the gate, you see, the Grand Prince is a little engaged and rather than ask you to wait, wondered if you would like to tour the city first until he is ready, we have many sites to see in Oppara…” he remarks, his voice trailing off slightly as it ends in a hesitant tone, no doubt expecting a cheerier or more welcoming response than what he had initially received so far.

Talia considered the office for a moment, before giving a half shrug. “I don’t see a problem exploring for a moment, however, there are eight of us here, which might make mobility a little difficult in the streets, I suppose that might limit some of the attractions the city might offer?” she asks quietly noticing the crowds of people in the streets head, idly wondering how pleased her bodyguards would be at having to navigate that situation.

“Ah, that is no problem, we can visit the gardens if you wish instead of touring some of the markets on display", the guide eagerly responds, happy to make use of his vast knowledge of the city itself. “They can be found just up Aroden’s Way, or, if that wasn’t to your fancy, we could also visit-"

“The gardens are fine, thank you” Talia swiftly cuts in, holding up her hand to forestall a flood of information the man was clearly eager to share. Gesturing the guide ahead, Talia falls into step behind him, her protectors following suit, watchful eyes always moving.

The procession continued on, her guide nattering on, blissfully unaware that Talia had long since stopped listening and instead had fantasised about buying a scroll of deafness for some wondrous silence. It wasn’t that she didn’t appreciate the man’s efforts, just that she preferred to explore on her own, something sadly not possible in her current circumstances.

Chatter aside though, Talia had to admit her guide knew the city well, the gardens were certainly impressive as they slipped through the entrances and were met with the lovely aroma of flowers. There were stone benches helpfully placed around should someone wish to rest and relax, but otherwise it was a picturesque scene as Talia wandered into the center of the garden, following a stone path weaving its way through the flower beds.

“Is it your first time in Oppera?” the guide asked, taking advantage of the fact that Talia’s attention was currently distracted by the wonderful scenery on display.

“Yes, yes it is” Talia mummers, still slightly entranced, before she hears a sudden twang in her ear, as she turns sharply, to spot one of her guards fall suddenly to the ground, a crossbow bolt protruding from his neck.

“I thought so” her guide responded smugly, drawing a Sawtooth Sabre as several other assassins materialized from around the gardens, masks on and weapons ready, moving swiftly towards her.

“Stand behind me” Talia orders instantly, hearing her guards swiftly move to intercept the guide now revealed assassin, as she shouts out a mystical word, summoning two barbed chains out of the ground, which immediately crash into the crossbowman, staining the nearby flowers with blood. The minor victory was immediately short lived, as Talia witnessed more of the Mantis striding forward, ignoring their fallen colleague as the chains vanished into thin air. Without looking, Talia knew that there were more behind her closing in, as she could hear the sounds of clashing blades, her bodyguards doing what they could to keep their charge safe.

Stuck for options, Talia taps into her magic again, this time putting a little more venom into her words. At her command, a blast of colour roared out towards the closest group, and Talia felt no small amount of satisfaction watching the entire bunch cry out in agony clutching their eyes as they fell down. Breathing hard, Talia took a step backwards, as the sounds of combat ceased. Whirling, Talia checked, noticing most of her bodyguards had suffered minor wounds but were otherwise ok. Talia checked back, noticing that there were many servants still standing, including the chatterbox assassin that had driven her into the ambush, both sides warily appraising each other now that the element of surprise was lost.

Watching carefully, Talia watched the Mantis closely. She had time to wait, someone would have heard the combat, and the cities law enforcement would eventually arrive. While her bodyguards were wounded, it was nothing life threatening and she had proven that she couldn’t be taken head on, the fallen Mantis were proof of that. Therefore, she fully expected them to back off and retreat, yet the assassins made no move.

A scream sounded again, from behind her as a blade slashed through a neck. Talia glanced around, but saw nothing. An invisible opponent she thought. Blast.

“RUN” one of her guards yelled before the blade slashed again, the unseen attacker again striking without warning, tearing down another one of her defenders as the rest of the Red Mantis engaged, moving in, taking advantage of the disarray. Stuck without options, Talia took the advice, sprinting deeper into the gardens without taking any note as to where she was going, running hard for a few minutes, glancing over her shoulder until she was certain she had lost them.

Trembling slightly and full of adrenaline, Talia frantically checked her surroundings again, realising that she didn’t actually know how to leave the gardens, so intent on escaping, she hadn’t quite realised she had gotten lost. She hoped the Mantis would assume she had found an alternative way out and leave the gardens, thus allowing her to hide here.

A twig snapped.

Heart pounding, Talia twirled in a full circle, but saw nothing, which meant the invisible assassin was still around, moving closer. Talia turned, but no matter what direction she faced, there was always a blind spot at her back, she couldn’t orientate herself without knowing where the assassin would was. The aasimar let out a small sob of fear and panic before her rational mind took over, crushing the feelings down. If she was going to get out of this, she had to be smart.

It was the hardest thing imaginable, to keep calm while being stalked by an invisible assassin, so Talia closed her eyes. She forced herself to listen, to hone in on the one emotion she was waiting for.

There.

Talia felt the stab of alarm, somewhere behind her, and whirling to face it, igniting a blast of flame from her fingertips. She heard a yell of agony as the assassin appeared, now rendered visible by the clothing ignited by the rush of fire. “Burn” Talia, muttered, her tone mixed with a desire of revenge and satisfaction at eliminating the assassin that had delighted in tormenting her while unseen. His howls of pain though, would bring others running.

Talia reached behind her, gently taking Midnight out of her backpack and into her hands. Alone and stuck without options, she had relied on her friend’s ability to perceive the unseen, and the empathy link they shared to locate where the assassin would attack from, thus allowing her to aim accordingly.

“Now now, I know you hate the daylight” she murmured, petting the bat carefully, who had proceeded to send her feelings of irritation through the link after being taken out of the dark backpack. “Its important though, I need you to lead me out of the gardens, and from there an escape route where I won’t run into anymore assassins. Can you do that for me?”she asks quietly, to Midnight, waiting for feelings of a grumpily sort of acceptance, before tossing it up into the air, watching it soar upwards.

A plan in motion, Talia cast two spells in quick succession, firstly casting a billowing fog, and then casting a hypnotic pattern of lights in the opposite direction to her planned escape route. She hoped the fog and misleading lights would draw more Mantis away allowing her to make as much of a clean getaway as she could. Tapping into her magic yet another time, she threw her magical strength into the grass around her, creating a wicker horse which she promptly mounted, directing it out of the gardens as swiftly as it could run, relying on Midnight’s aerial abilities to direct them out of the gardens.

It was a fast, frantic ride, as Talia left the gardens and returned to the streets of the city. Fortunately, Midnight had selected a route largely devoid of people to increase speed, but it did mean it was empty of law enforcement, apparently they did not police far into the Narrows. Heading down a straight section of street, Talia experienced another surge of panic as yet more assassin’s wearing the trademark masks stepped out ahead, rushing in from nearby alleyways, hemming her in. Dismounting, she saw Midnight circling over the top of a nearby residence, and charged ahead, running into the advancing Mantis, making it into the building seconds ahead of them. Hurtling up the stairs, she gave a shriek of surprise as a man leaped through an adjacent window. Talia fell back, falling down the stairs, her ankle twisting slightly before she thrust her hands forward, a blast of water rushing forward, slamming into the man who uttered a surprised scream as it sent him hurtling back out the window to the ground below.

Scrambling to her feet, Talia heard a BANG as the door below flung itself open and Talia saw her chatterbox guide, now revealed chatterbox assassin stride upwards, grinning as he saw the injured Talia hobble up the stairs.

“I don’t know why you are running” the man stated, following Talia, seemly in no particular hurry, his movement far quicker than her own, impaired as she currently was. “The outcomes been pre-determined you might say, all the while you thought you were escaping, whereas you were actually running straight into net. Usually, we wouldn’t be quite so cruel, but the plan was my idea after all, and I do like seeing the crushing despair when a target realizes that there isn’t a way out,” he continued conversationally, before finally reaching grabbing distance.

Hoppling back, Talia cast yet another spell to buy time, trying to hold the man in place, wincing as her magical reserves got lower and lower. The man glimmered for a moment, freezing in place for a half step, before noticeably breaking the enchantment, moving forward again, the spell only giving Talia another few feet of distance as she made it to the top of the stairs.

“Oh please, you’re trying to restrain ME? Someone’s got a little too much self-esteem today” the man remarks in a bored tone, reaching out and grabbing Talia by the waist, before hurling her into a wall, ignoring the aasimar’s groans as she falls to the ground. “Not much of a fighter either to be honest” he continued, deliberately standing on Talia’s hurt ankle, ignoring her scream of pain. “Look at you, unable to really walk, pathetic at fighting…without your spells you really are nothing more than a pretty face really aren’t you?” he asks, smiling happily.

Pushing through the pain, Talia focuses on the last dregs of her power, sending a blast of water towards her attacker, sending him stumbling back. Making use of the distance it granted before crawling into a nearby room. Desperate to stall she drags some furniture to barricade the entrance as best as she can, before turning for an escape route, feeling a stab of panic as she realised the room is effectively a dead end. There’s a balcony outside, but Talia doubted she had the strength left for a climb, and a bulky wardrobe in the corner, which Talia attempted to move but gave up as simply being too heavy. Exhausted, she slumped to the floor.

“Ah, so you did have one more spell remaining, I guess we miscounted” her chatterbox smirked, observing Talia through the barricade. “Credit where credit is due though, even effectively powerless, forced to a crawl speed, you decide to pointlessly delay your fate by this pathetic looking barricade in front of me. What did you want to achieve, maybe an Icarus moment with that balcony? If so, I wouldn’t exhaust yourself further darling, we pulled our remaining operatives outside the building, so falling, while stylish, isn’t going to help out here” her chatterbox remarked helpfully, before viciously kicking at the furniture blocking his way, slowly shoving it aside piece by piece. Still lying on the floor, Talia crawled to the balcony, decide to check anyway, before pulling back slightly as she realized what the man said was true, there were indeed the remaining Mantis surrounding the building, gazing up, watching, waiting.

“I think you should be thanking me though, the mission statement was to prevent you spreading any of our little secrets,” the man said, watching her reactions and slow movements. “Now usually, that would mean duly carrying out our divine mandate, but then it stuck me, we could simply take you back to the Citadel. There, you can blab our secrets to anyone you like, no-one will care. Besides, I think you would look lovely in Sivlamlik” the man finishes, leering slightly.

Huffing slightly, Talia glances out across the balcony again, before spotting Midnight again, circling over a building on the opposite side of the street. Talia glanced at Midnight puzzled, before understanding glimmered and she squinted, spotting a door that would allow escape with the remaining Mantis placing themselves all outside her building. That said, the distance from balcony to the building opposite was the width of an entire street, too far to jump unless…

Talia struggled to her feet, as the assassin glanced at her with surprise, kicking aside the remnants of the barricade and stalked into the room, watching Talia take faltering steps towards the wardrobe. “Has it really come to this? Hide and Seek?” the assassin remarks in a confused tone. Talia ignored his remarks, fixing her destination in her mind and thanking her lucky stars she had had the foresight earlier in the day to prepare herself for any threat. Gasping slightly, she opened the door of the wardrobe, and slipped inside.

The assassin paused, unsure of the new development. He strode over to the door, opening it with a sing song “found you”.

He froze.

The wardrobe was empty. It was like it was some kind of magician’s act. Drawing his sabre, he shoved it right through the wardrobe, finding nothing. No aasimar. Confused, he checked behind it and searched the room again. Still nothing, and he was adamant the women hadn’t turned invisible. Perplexed, he moved to the balcony, aimlessly glancing at the building opposite. There, holding onto the doorframe for support, stood his target, a determined look on her face as she appraised him from across the street. Giving the man a wave, the assassin seethed in anger watching his mission go up in smoke as Talia moved to a different doorway, and was gone.

Well, the deadline is upon us and unfortunately I was not able to put up an application.

I did think up a concept and an idea, and even some background pointers, but there is no chance to craft up an elaborate and complex submission.

I'll be honest - I think I am tending to shy away from those. Just been through too many processes of REALLY thinking up a character, and even as far as envisioning a future progression to not be picked in the end.

Not criticizing the process - it is how it is, and rightly so - am simply admitting my preference for a more 'broad stroked' approach to characters that develop during the game itself, if and after they are chosen.

Of course some of them just get a life all of their own, and continue on living in my head (and sometimes through multiple recruitment threads also), and I will keep on being drawn to well thought up and challenging recruitment threads, and most likely not having the time to put together the appropriate backgrounds, stories, etc.

That's vented then, so... Good luck everyone - I have seen VERY good submissions, and many I would like to play with, or GM for, so I'm sure the game will be a very good one. I'll probably be lurking in the shadows ;)

** spoiler omitted **...

Glad you decided to submit! How old is Talia? Now that her parents are dead, does she have any living family? Are her archaeological digs solely to discover more about the Red Mantis or is she interested in archaeology in general?

Thank you for your interest, Albion, and for your observations. I think the ‘broad stroked’ character can work, but likely fits better for a campaign that starts at level 1 when characters don’t have much experience adventuring and such. A good game is certainly the plan. Hopefully those selected and myself can at least provide a fun adventure for everyone to read.

Less than a day to go, everyone. There’s still time to submit, if you’ve been lurking, but the deadline is coming up fast. Having already agonized over the decision, I know it will not be easy. And while I know that is little comfort to those not selected, I can confidently say that there are too many good characters for me to pick them all. Making selection even harder is the fact that there are also too many good players for me to take them all.

I’ll be posting a few thoughts along with the finalized list of candidates once recruitment closes. At this point, it will likely be very late Monday night or very early Tuesday morning when I send out PMs to those selected. I’ll mention this again tomorrow after recruitment closes, but, if selected, please reply to the PM you receive within 24 hours (preferably a lot sooner), if you intend to play. With that in mind, it will likely be sometime Tuesday or Wednesday at the latest when I post the official list of those selected in this thread.

As a final reminder, recruitment closes tomorrow (October 9th) at 1 pm eastern.

Sovereign Court

Oh man!

I have been lurking, but the game is too enticing to pass up, and so I am sliding in on the eve of battle with my submission!

There are truths whispered upon the wind, though most would dare not listen.

Roakkad Shrikkir-tsha, Scion of Gozreh
Shoanti Wizard (Spirit Whisperer)

A refugee hailing from the Shriikirri-Quah of Northern Varisia, Roakkad's fate led him to the impossible city of Kaer Maga where he trained with the druidic cults therein. Now, a dying augur's portent has ushered him to the great city of Iadara for purposes unknown.

A chosen of Gozreh, Roakkad is a wizard/shaman hybrid with access to the wizard spell list but, in place of school specialization, receives limited access to a shaman spirit. I've chosen Nature, which will truly come online at level 5, when Roakkad will receive spontaneous summon nature's ally, gain the Augmented Summons feat, and later add his Cha modifier (+3) to the saves of his summoned animals. In other words, Roakkad will often summon animals to add melee support to the group. While the bookkeeping of summoned creatures can be problematic in a live game, I've found that the immediate access to stats in PbP makes it much easier to handle, and I plan to take full responsibility for tracking the stats and abilities of my own summons. In addition to summoning animal allies, Roakkad will focus on spells keyed to the natural world, especially the weather and animal-themed spells that are such a great fit for the worship of Gozreh. Spells like lightning bolt, aqueous orb, and ice storm will be interspersed with bull's strength, cat's grace, and so on. I'm no fool, however, and will also rely on wizardly classics like color spray and dimension door, where helpful.

I've included both a backstory and sample roleplay in my profile. As he previously participated in a Runelords game, the post takes place in Sandpoint, but I believe it is a good representation of his personality. I have chosen him to submit for this campaign because I feel his "chosen one" backstory is appropriate for the deicide inherent in your story.

Thank you for your consideration, and for running this campaign!
