Kilarra nimbly steps further towards the back of the boat, easily keeping her footing on the rocking deck with the intent of flanking with Vorya, as he requested. Suddenly her eyes widen, and she sees the massive tornado monster knocking Talivar around, and spinning Urrueleth like a children's top. "Fu**!" she curses, words lost to the storm. "Behind you!" she yells at Vorya. She stands her ground against the angry, little spinning wind monster, attacking it with both blades. In her anger, she fails to strike the elemental with either blade.

As you discuss your next course of action, Makori runs out onto the deck from the Captain’s quarters. Makori Reflex Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 In her haste, she falls prone onto the deck.

Makori merely grits her teeth and pulls herself back to her feet. She refuses any offers of aid. After she takes a moment to recover, she looks back and forth between each of you.

She shouts over the sounds of the storm, “I’m guessing something other than the storm itself is responsible for your injuries? Anyway, it seems your monarchs chose wisely after all. Or it appears so thus far, at least.”

The navigator looks over at Talia and says, “The Captain hasn’t woken up since I got him into his quarters. Of you five, you seem like the one most likely to be able to help him. Come take a look.”

Makori looks back at the rest of you and says, “Which one of you are supposed to be at the wheel? We’ll be three days off-course at this rate! There’s plenty more that needs doing besides seeing to the Captain.”

She walks back toward the Captain’s quarters, expecting Talia to follow.

For the rest of you, there are several tasks that Makori could have been referring to. Besides attending to the wheel, of course, there’s the foremast that needs properly securing now that the immediate threat is over. There’s also the other two masts. Though they look like they’re not in imminent danger, it can’t be good for their sails to stay up in the midst of such a ferocious storm. And lest you forget, First Mate Driara and most of the crew are still below decks apparently dealing with a hull breach.

If you want to try steering the ship, you’ll need to make a Profession (Sailor) or Knowledge (geography) check to stay on course. Due to the storm, it will also require a DC 8 Strength check. You can retry the strength check, but too many failures could have consequences.

All three masts need to have their sails tied down in a more permanent fashion. The foremast’s sails have already been lowered, so they’ll be easier to secure than the others. Each set of sails will require an acrobatics, strength, or Profession (sailor) check. You’ll need to make separate checks for each mast.

Then there’s the situation below deck. You’ll need to check on Driara and the others to better assess that situation.

Talia, if you go with Makori, you’ll need to make a heal check.

Everyone, you can only attempt one of the above tasks at a time (going with Makori, steering, sail-lowering, or checking below decks) so choose wisely. There’s still a storm raging.

Talia frowns a little at being singled out for nurse duty, but trails after the navigator without a word. Truthfully, she had elected not to channel her healing spirit for the day, so the Captain needed to at least see out the day before she could grant actual healing.

That said, Talia follows the Captain into the room, and glances over the injuries, no doubt severe after the lightning strike. Though she lacked healing magic, Talia did have some magic that could help her, and mummered a few words to cast Visualization of the Mind, granting her greater ability to treat and understand wounds.

Kilarra finds the front sails easy enough to secure. The middle sails prove beyond her skill. She’ll need someone else’s aid to prevent them from getting torn by the storm. The last set of sails prove nearly as easy as the first set, but take a bit longer since they were still raised.

Talivar and Uruelleth are able to work together to get the ship back on course. Uruelleth’s fatigue nearly proves to be an issue, but the orc-turned-gnoll-turned-elf manages to keep the wheel under control. Talivar is able to direct Uruelleth as to how to turn the wheel. Despite the storm’s relentless rain, the sorcerer proves adept at keeping his sense of direction.

Talia and Vorya accompany Makori to the Captain’s quarters. Despite the storm outside, most of the quarters are quite dry. The Captain lies unconscious on one side of his bed. The rising and falling of his chest is the only indication he still lives.

“He hasn’t moved since I brought him in here. The casual observer might think he was dead,” Makori says.

Talia goes over to the Captain and closely inspects his wounds and his condition. Captain Fineas is suffering from first-degree burns across much of his chest and his right leg. The bolt may have severed some tendons in that leg. He likely went unconscious from the initial shock of the lightning strike. He seems to have a fever and is sweating profusely. Despite his injuries, Talia is confident she can keep the Captain alive till the next day when she can properly administer some healing to the man.

“So, what do you think? Will he live?” Makori asks.

The mainmast’s sails still need lowering, unfortunately. There’s also the situation below decks. The ship hasn’t sunk yet, so that’s a good sign.

Talivar’s efforts to assist Kilarra prove futile. Despite his normally in-depth knowledge of sailing, the mechanics of lowering the mainmast’s sails escape him. Eventually, a pair of sailors from the ballista crew walk over and assist Kilarra and Talivar in lowering the sails. The sailors look quite disappointed at the failure of the Quintumvirate’s chosen.

With all the sails lowered and secured, Talivar and Vorya head below decks to check on the rest of the crew. Kilarra and Talia, feel free to accompany them, if you want to. Poor Uruelleth is left holding the ship’s wheel alone. He has to hope that he can maintain the ship’s proper heading in Talivar’s absence.

As you walk down the stairs into the lower deck, you notice that the depths of the ship are almost completely dark. By the time you’re halfway down the stairs, you realize the darkness is mostly due to the storm raging outside. You see a couple torches burning in the ship’s depths indicating that there is yet life below.

As you reach the final set of steps, your shoes splash down into water that is covering the floor of the lower deck. It sloshes back and forth with the movement of the ship. The water level doesn’t seem to be getting any higher.

Now that you are finally out of the storm’s rain, you begin to hear a female voice shouting orders. As you go further into the lower deck and pass some of the crew, you finally recognize the voice as that of First Mate Driara.

“Get those crates secure in the corner. We can’t lose anymore supplies. You two, light some more torches. It’s getting too dark in here for most of the crew to see their hand when it’s in front of their face let alone see well enough to work. And you there, make sure there’s plenty of tar around that patch. There will be no more leaking if I have anything to say about it.”

The First Mate finally notices your arrival and pauses in issuing commands to walk over to you. She seems pleased to see that you’re alive.

“Guess things up top finally calmed down enough for you to check up on us down here? Good to know you haven’t forgotten about us. The leak was pretty bad, but we caught it quick enough to prevent it from doing too much damage. Just a few harmed supplies seems to be the worst of it. Can’t imagine what caused it. The Captain and I both did a thorough inspection of the inside and outside of the hull before leaving Port Peril.”

Driara looks at you more closely and seems to notice your injuries just now. “What in Desna’s name happened up there anyway? You all look a whole lot worse than what a simple storm could do to you.”

DC 20 Perception:
You notice a trail of something dark red in the water below you. It seems to be coming from underneath a closed door on the side of the lower deck opposite the stairs.

DC 15 Disable Device:
As you glance over at where the hole has been patched, you notice the strange shape of the gash in the hull. It doesn’t look like something that could have happened from natural stress or even the stress of the storm. The hull was sabotaged.

-----

Meanwhile, Uruelleth continues to do his best to maintain his grip on the wheel, despite his fatigue. As he does so, the storm’s rain seems to slow. Dark clouds still swirl overhead and the sea continues to churn.

Uruelleth DC 20 Perception:

In that case Kilarra eyes the tied up wheel with a raised eyebrow. "Oh, yeah. Let's leave our lives in the hands of a rope..."

She still scoffs and makes her offer to Ruel.

Kilarra climbs up to the crow's nest and uses the perception noted above to watch for trouble, and the geography above to ensure we're on course, calling out to Ruel if we get off course or she sees something.

I don't think it's good sailing sense to just the off the wheel while the ship is in a storm. It needs to be turned into the waves and avoid the swells or it could capsize.

Ruel doesn't trust a rope either, and keeps hold of the wheel.

Uruelleth, you aren’t fatigued any longer.
Kilarra, unfortunately you can’t retry a knowledge check till the next day. I’m sure Uruelleth appreciates the thought, though. : )

Makori nods at Talia’s remarks. The navigator replies, “I’ll stay with him. I’m not going to be doing much navigating as long as this storm continues.”

-----

Uruelleth remains at the wheel despite Talivar’s suggestion. The elf ensures the ship’s rudder remains firmly attached by holding the wheel steady. A few minutes after the rain slows, a sunbeam appears through the clowds. Then another. And another. Eventually there is more blue sky than dark clouds overhead. The storm passes almost as quickly as it came.

Up in the crow’s nest, Kilarra witnesses the same parting of clouds. From above, she’s able to see that the ship is surrounded by nothing but water and more water. No land is in sight. The Eye of Abendego still swirls off the starboard side of the ship.

-----

Below deck, Driara raises an eyebrow at Talivar’s mentioning of air elementals. “I’ve heard of the Eye spawning smaller storms and have even heard rumors of creatures dwelling in the storms. Till now, I thought they were just rumors. I’m glad you all proved resilient.”

Talia and Vorya notice something dark red in the water. Talivar also notices it after them. While the others watch, Vorya walks over to the door where the dark red is coming from.

Vorya turns the door’s handle and it opens easily enough. As soon as he does, someone, or rather some body, splashes down into the ankle-deep water and floats into the main room.

You immediately recognize this to be Ragnar, the dwarf Kilarra and Vorya interrogated. Ragnar is dead. This is evidenced by his slit throat. The body doesn’t appear to be bleeding into the water anymore.

DC 12 Heal:
Based on the state of the body, it appears he has been dead less than an hour.

DC 20 Heal:
You notice that the cut on the dwarf’s throat is jagged and likely wasn’t made by a straight or uniform weapon.

The sight of the dead body falling into he water galvanizes the ex-assassin. Instantly he can tell Ragnar has only been killed recently.

'This man has been killed in the last hour." Looking up he stares at Driara. 'We have a killer on board."

Turning he starts issuing commands, not even realizing he really isn't in a place to give orders. 'We need to get everyone deck, now. Then we need to sweep the ship, stem to stern to remove the possible of the assassin being a stowaway or something. I doubt that is what happened but we need to eliminate that possibility."

'Then.." Vorya says grimly, 'We will interrogate everyone in the crew until we find our killer."

Talivar frownsd upon seeing the corpse, "All a bit of a coincidence this, the storm, the elementals, whatever happened to the captain and now this." Driara shakes her head at Ragnar’s body. She lets Vorya speak before turning to the ship’s sailors and shouting. “Well? You heard the man. Get to the deck. Now! And line up once you’re there.”

To Talivar’s words, Driara says, “The Captain’s a tough bastard. It’ll take more than a little storm to end him. Other sailors may not be so lucky, though, if we don’t catch this killer quick.”

With no context for what's going on, Kilarra and Uruelleth watch as the majority of the crew run out from below deck and line up at attention on the deck.

Driara and the rest of you emerge a few moments later. The magnitude of the task at hand is just beginning to dawn on you.

Not including you all, there are a total of 37 crew members on board. With Ragnar dead, that means there are 36 living crew members. Besides the crew’s officers (The Captain, First Mate, Second Mate, the navigator, and the master gunner), there are a total of 31 crew members.

How do you plan on going about interrogating them and how do you plan to go about searching the ship? Now that the storm has passed, you can tell that the sun is getting low in the sky and it is likely after 4 o’clock.

"I hope you're right Driaya." replied Talivar. A tiny part of his mind insisted she was a suspect too, but if so could she really stand there and say that? Talivar didn't think so.

On the way up Talivar told Talia and Driaya,
"Say why don't I go search the bunk room and the hold while the crew are being questioned? Honestly don't think I'll be more than a spare wheel for that."

Assuming nobody disagrees.

Talivar prepares for the search by using his spell lattice to cast a charm that would focus his eye and mind. Because the search for the murder weapon would likely take some time, he held his enchanted rod while he did so to stretch out the charm. Talivar casts heightened awareness with his metamagic rod of extend so it will last 80 mins. 2/8 level 1 spells used.

Vorya ponders how to search the ship. Simply looking is a good start but they must be on guard for magical methods on concealment. He, more then most, understood that. The inquisitor has a feeling the killer is among the crew however.

He follows behind Talivar, and scans with Detect Magic at every turn. He is searching for both a weapon and the actual killer.

We now have two suspects in the assassination of Lidellia. There is Mellisar. He is one of the most honorable stewards I have ever known. Yet on at least three separate occasions, guards report that he left his quarters and seemingly vanished for hours at a time. The other suspect is a woman named Riyyol. She is one of my scribes. I’ve never known her to be untruthful with me, but over the last few days, she has hesitated when I ask her about the Red Mantis. It is only for a moment or two, but it is enough for me to know she isn’t being entirely forthright. Something is going on. Whether the assassin is Mellisar, Riyyol, or someone else entirely, as Queen, I will find the truth.

Kilarra observes the happenings below, but can only tell that a search is being called for. She’s not exactly sure why. She doesn’t notice anything in particular about the crew except that many of them appear a bit nervous.

Talivar doesn’t sense any deception in Driara’s words. The First Mate quickly acquiesces to Talivar’s request.

While Talivar and Vorya go to inspect the bunk room and hold, Driara goes up on deck with the rest of the crew. At Uruelleth’s question, the First Mate says, “There’s been a murder. I believe the sailor’s name was Ragnar. His throat was cut. Vorya suggested we interrogate each of the crew members. I’m not sure exactly how he plans on going about that, but he had everyone come on deck. He and Talivar are occupied elsewhere at the moment, so I’m open to suggestions on how to proceed.”

Kilarra, from the crow’s nest, is also able to pick up on most of Uruelleth and Driara’s conversation.

-----

In the bunkroom, Talivar, with Vorya’s help, finds a few of the crew are in possession of stolen booze and a couple have what appear to be illegal drugs bearing the markings of Port Peril. They don’t find anything bloody or that could have obviously been used for a murder. There are plenty of weapons in the bunk room, but all of them are in good condition apart from normal wear and tear.

In the hold, the pair again search for anything useful to the investigation. Though Talivar doesn’t see anything that could have to do with the murder, he does notice that the shape of the hull breach seems odd and out of the ordinary. Perhaps someone with a more particular skill set could determine more.

As Talivar scratches his head, he realizes that the Captain’s quarters could still use searching. He and Vorya go to the quarters and (with Talia’s permission) search the premises. The Captain is still sleeping or unconscious on his bed. Makori sits nearby and merely observes as you search the quarters.

After a few minutes, you discover a rapier stowed underneath the table bearing the ship’s maps and navigation charts. It is of masterwork quality and looks well-maintained. There’s no sign of blood on it.

Makori clears her throat behind you and says, “That belongs to me. You didn’t really expect me to go on this journey unarmed, did you? Even the worst pirate would take care to arm herself. Based on what’s happened so far, it appears I made the right choice.”

Talivar and Vorya DC 22 Sense Motive:
You can tell Makori isn't happy that you discovered the rapier. She doesn't act as though she's guilty of a crime, but she seems... protective... of the weapon.

Talia, it makes sense that you would be there, so that’s perfectly fine.

For perhaps the first time since you met her, Makori’s face reddens at Talia’s remark. The navigator relaxes a bit at Talivar’s words and says, “Thank you. It matters not why I hid the weapon. It is mine to do with as a I please. I certainly had nothing to do with that crew member’s murder. I’ve been with the Captain since the storm hit us.”

Talivar doesn’t have a good grasp of how much the weapon is worth, but a cursory inspection does reveal that it is of better make than the average rapier.

Despite Kilarra's wariness, she doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary with the crew. They all seem a bit upset that one of their fellow crew members has died, but that appears to be a universal sentiment.

Jimell walks over to Driara and says, "Well, then. I did not expect anything like this to happen. We're all on the same side! So who would dare kill one of us? It must have been a stowaway. Perhaps the perpetrator teleported away just to leave us confused and try to turn us against each other. Seems like something the Red Mantis would try."

Thrim, the master gunner, also walks over and joins in the conversation. He says, "The killer teleported out in the middle of the storm? That seems unlikely. It would take some powerful magic to be able to teleport far enough away to get to safety. Seems more likely the killer is still among us. Torag knows it isn't me. But that still leaves all of you."

Driara shakes her head and says, "Whatever the case, if the truth can be uncovered, I believe the Quintumvirate's chosen will be the ones to do so."

The First Mate looks over at Kilarra and Uruelleth and says, "What is the plan, exactly?"

Uruelleth continues to pace up and down the row of crew like a caged animal. His frustration mounted; he was as out of his element in this matter as he is on the high seas. The orcs of Belkzen rarely concerned themselves with such niceties as justice, or even finding the actual perpetrator.

Actual instances of outright murder were actually rather rare. Most of the time, disputes were settled in the fighting pits and practice yards, sometimes to the death but not always. And fighting together against Lastwall forces or a rival clan forged bonds of blood.

So whenever a dead body showed up, an idea of who caused it was usually formed relatively quickly and dealt with promptly.

This was different. An anonymous assassin that could be anyone except the ones he knew to be on the deck with him fighting the elementals. Uruelleth snarls again. "Who saw something? Talk! Did anyone see it?" he barks at the sailors.

Getting on deck he hears the wild speculation about teleportation. It is possible the assassin muses, such magic existed of course. But he felt that was unlikely. Not only would the storm have complicated it, if you had that power in hand, why not use it repeatably and kill the whole crew?

Vorya watches, with a concealed smile as Uruelleth interrogates the crew. While he doubts it'll get answer, putting the killer ont heir toes is always a good idea.

Now, to find a killer.

He sends a silent mental message to Kilarra, 'We are going to find our wolf among the sheep. Feel up to it?'

Heads up Vorya, but Makori is staying with the captain, as per my instructions and keeping him safe until i can heal him. Which you know, is probably wise considering there is as assassin on board!

Talia watches Vorya leave, and turns to go as well, before a thought strikes her and she turns back to the crew member.

"I'm not happy that you avoided my question, but I'll let it be from now on. If you are innocent, then prove it to me. I want you to give me a detail account of your whereabouts, even if its just a description of you being here. Who you saw when, who saw you, and so on. Do this for me, and I'll leave you be here." the shaman remarks, making notes before leaving and heading back up on deck.

This is Talia's preferred interrogation tactic. Ask each crew member individually whereabouts for the day, and use it to form a pattern of who we know was where, when. Of course, this only works when you ask this of each crew member, individually / privately (so as they don't share answers) but at least this way you can sort out who was accounted for and who wasn't. Talia would happily take notes for all 31 crew members to get a picture. Even if (say) there were 5 people unaccounted for, still easier for Intimidate to work etc. I'm happy relaying this interrogation tactic IC to Vorya unless he has a better idea.
