"Toodles!" Undrella calls out as you depart from the tannery.

"Toodles!" another voice squawks out from beside her in turn.

"Shut up, Bird."

Out in the village once more, it immediately becomes apparent even to Narku's untrained eye that something has happened in your absence. One of the six gnolls that you slew in combat is missing, only a disturbed puddle of blood left in its place.

As they depart...

"Thank you again for your hospitality, Undrella the Majestic," Julius bows his way out of the door tapping on Sarala's tail and motioning outside.

Outside...

Julius watches Thurrios' examination with pursed lips. At the inquisitor's pronouncement, he exchanges looks with Sarala.

Eyes wide in wonder, Julius turns as if speaking to an imaginary crowd. Striking a pose he says, "After leaving the home of his new found lady love, our mighty hero Thurrios the Furious discovers the bridge where he slaughtered fifty gnoll warriors has been emptied. The carcasses, every one, has been taken from the site of the immense battle. What creature has such an appetite it would need to do such a thing? We'll soon find out..."

Julius swirls his dust cloak around in front of him dramatically like the street bards always did in the Absalom markets.

"Lead on, brave follower of the glorious Dawnflower. With you before us, our victory over yon hordes is assured."
Julius winks and stage whispers, "Even if I have to add enough gnolls to the tale to make a horde each time it's told."

"Toodles to you too," says Sarala, waving a friendly farewell to the harpy. As they get out, she remarks, "A snake that is giant and venomous. In the jungle, sometimes I'd see venom snakes and sometimes I'd see giant snakes, but most of these snakes must have figured when you're that venomous there's no need to be big. Or if you're that big, no need to be venomous. And this one decides to just show up all my dumb jungle snakes? Definitely deserves a decapitating."

She listens to Julius's story and says, "Next time you tell it, say it was fifty three gnolls on the bridge, 'cause then people will probably believe it better."

Sarala returns the whetstone to Narkû before departing, nodding thanks instead of speaking it. Because they are now in infiltrationing mode!

Just to note, if you don't have any objections Julius, between the battle with the gnolls, "stealthy" approach to the tannery and the conversation with Undrella, I think your mage armor has expired by now.

Update will be up shortly.

The party crosses the bridge, stepping past the other dead gnolls, which have already become well acquainted with the village's resident fly population. Closer to the main part of the village, its two-tiered layout becomes more clear to you. The battle market - Kelmarane's largest structure - stands at the top of a large hill. Further west, on the same level as the domed market, is another elaborate building, perhaps a church of some kind.

The section of the village you stand in appears to be the bottom tier, a steep incline separating you from the top one. However, there is a road (moving past B2) that leads seems to lead into that direction. Another road moves south, back toward the pesh fields.

True to Undrella's word, the slave market is just a hundred or so feet south, right along the road leading out of the village (B1). Like most of the buildings in Kelmarane, the main structure is in shambles, missing large portions of its walls and roof. The structures surrounding it are in even worse shape, reduced to nothing but a few standing walls. Numerous wooden stalls surround the main building, though only a few are intact. An open archway leads into the dimly-lit slave market, its wooden doors long obliterated. As though to make it all the more obvious that this is your destination, a sign hangs over the entrance, though like everything else, it has seen better days.

It reads, "SL-VE M--KET"

Narkû's brow curls as he tries to read the sign, as beads of sweat begin to form on this forehead. Then a sigh of relief as he figures out the missing letters to the words.

"Shhh... this is a Slive Musket shop. Narkû had heard rumors of a new firearm weapon being made in Alkenstar. Maybe Narkû can find one in here before Narkû goes to the slave market," Narkû whispers to the others before entering.

Julius shrugs, he picture of innocence.

He whispers, "What? For all we know it could be exactly what he thinks it is."

Julius draws out his wand of mage armor once again and expends a charge for himself. Expecting Undrella's large venomous snake to be a less than cordial host didn't seem like bad manners in this situation. At a glance, the open floor space of the slave market is empty, with the exception of a pile of rotting wood on the opposite end of the room - perhaps the remnants of an auctioning stage. 10 feet off the ground are a series of wooden rafters, likely the only things holding the roof up. There are no slives or muskets in sight.

Sarala:
Looking at the rafters as you walk in, you determine that they could likely be climbed on, were you to reach them. During your inspection however, you find that another creature evidently had the same idea. A large, tan snake is resting on the rafters, just barely concealed by shadows, where the light from above does not reach. The serpent's head turns in the direction of the others, its dark tongue flicking outward, evidently alerted to their presence.

The snake is currently occupying J10, J11, K10, and K11. It is Large.

A good idea! Moved and shaded.

And of course, it occurred to me only a little while ago that I am acting for Thurrios. D'oh! I'll put the first part of the round up later tonight.

Round One (Pt. 1)

Narku leaps into action the instant the serpent rears its head, rushing forward to close the distance.

Armed with Tempest, Thurrios steps forward, drawing a dagger with his other hand. Looking up at the creature, he hurls the small blade toward its large body.

Thrown Dagger: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Unfortunately the throw is a miss; with a thunk the dagger's blade buries itself into the wooden rafter, going unnoticed by the snake.

As though to answer Narku's challenge, the mamba strikes, extending its head toward him in the blink of an eye. Narku takes 9 points of damage.

Damage: 1d6 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

In a blur of motion the snake clamps down on the half-orc's shoulder, its fangs sinking into his flesh. Just as quickly, the snake pulls its head away, returning to safety up above. A wave of nausea briefly comes over Narku, but he is able to shake it away.

Round One (Pt. 2)

With his target out of reach, Narku steels himself, preparing to strike when the opportunity presents itself.

Though initially startled by the serpent's sudden appearance, Marossa is quick to retrieve her flute and start her bardic performance. Round 6/10

Recognizing that the rafters are stable enough to hold her weight, Sarala approaches one of the support beams and starts to climb up. Reaching the top effortlessly, she then proceeds to throw one of her shuriken at the mamba. Unfortunately, the attack is similarly ineffective, bouncing off the rafters and landing on the ground.

Julius draws his wand and fires a bolt of arcane energy at the mamba. The projectile strikes the length of its body, eliciting an angry hiss.

Anapa steps forward and takes out his bow, before taking aim and loosing an arrow at the snake.

"Sarala!" Julius cries out as the snake viciously bites his Vanaran friend.

Desperately trying to think of something that could keep the snake from killing his fellow Pathfinder, Julius remembers a trick that affects those with sight. He finds the colored sand in his pouch and moves the fingers of his free hand in arcane sigils while muttering something magical. Taking a single step forward, Julius places himself in the snake's reach attempting to save his friend.

"Color spray!" he shouts while flinging the sand which coalesces into strangely dazzling light rushing out and up at a diagonal from the arcanist's position towards the giant snake.

Julius casts color spray. Based on the notion of 15 ft in a circle from Julius, I assume that since the snake is higher up, he wouldn't be able to hit it with the spell as the angle would be further than 15 ft unless he moves forward hence the step.

Seeing his friend in mortal peril, Julius steps forward and casts his illusion. A maelstrom of colors fires out from his hand and washes over the snake's body.
Mamba Will Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
2d4 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7, 1d4 ⇒ 3
More interested in Sarala than in Julius' spellcasting, the mamba does nothing to retaliate, finding itself bearing the full brunt of the spell. Overwhelmed by the offense to its senses, the serpent abruptly falls limp, its long body hanging down from the ceiling. With sudden shift in weight its entire body slides off the rafters and down below, where it strikes the ground with a heavy thud and coils around, as though it were a pile of rope.
Fall Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

The thing is out cold for 7 rounds... I am going to go ahead and end the combat here!

Male Human Oracle / 15 (AC: 22 [T: 9 FF: 22] | HP: 147/156(0NL) | F+17*, R+10*, W+15* | Init: -1 |Perc: +0 | Lifesense 30’)

Indeed, we'll coup it (multiple times if needed), and hack off the head, as proof of the deed.

"Excellent work friends. My apologies for not being very useful in that fight."

Female Vanara Monk 4 (AC 18 [T 18, FF 14]) HP 32/32, Fort +4, Ref +7, Will +4 | Init +3 | Per +10

Sarala pulls Thurrios's dagger out of the rafters where it was jammed in, then drops down from the rafters very carefully. She draws her temple sword to help with the hacking effort, despite looking more than a little queasy.

Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Once the snake is properly dead, she'll flop down on her back on the snake's newly decapitated corpse as if it were an uncomfortable reptilian corpse bed. "Julius. I saw a bright light," says Sarala, of course just referencing the arcanist's colour spray. "I'm going to dictate my will now, get a pen. To Julius, I bequeath my many many shuriken and the marbles I know he covets. No, but seriously, turn me on my side if I throw up."

Dark Archive

AC:11 (T:11; FF:10) | CMD:13 (FF:12) | HP: 20/20 | F+3, R+2, W+4 | Init: +1 | Perc: +6 (+7 if opposed)

After the snake falls, the others ruin the snake's wonderful scales with indiscriminate hacking to kill the monster. When Thurrios finally realizes that he can just settle the whole thing by cutting off the mamba's head, Julius watches Sarala sway and then allow herself to fall on the soft and squishy body of the snake.

After her "deathbed" pronouncement, Julius rushes to her side and takes up her hand in his like a distraught sibling.

"No, Sarala! Don't go towards any lights, and you can keep all your shurikens since you'll be the one who needs them. I'm going to do everything in my power to sa-" He suddenly pauses and blinks several times. "...wait, did you say I get your marbles?"

A slow smile appears on the arcanist's face, and he glances around as if to make sure no one else is listening. Leaning closer, he says to Sarala, "Go ahead. I'm listening."

He turns his head to Narkû and winks conspiratorially to indicate he's having a bit of fun.

Dangerous as it was, the unconscious mamba is powerless to stop everyone from taking turns hacking through its muscular neck. With one last swing of Thurrios' Tempest, the head comes off, leaving a bloody stump. The mouth of the disembodied head hangs open, dark venom still oozing from its fangs.

Anapa shakes his head
"It was not needed to kill the creature. We were the ones intruding onto its area... But very well. Let us continue on our path"

I know you haven't been keeping up with the game too much, Anapa. So FYI, we came here specifically to kill this creature. NPC quest. ;-D

"Narkû will get my whetstone, because he so generously lets me borrow his all the time," says Sarala. "Marossa. Dear, sweet Marossa. She gets my journal. But on the condition that she never read it."
