While Kiri's first impulse was to ignore the woman she decided to respond simply by saying, "My people don't wear shoes." With that she turned her focus outside through the window, keep watch in case they had to go and hide or to make sure the coast was clear while they spoke with the woman.

She pats the woman on the shoulder again. "The dottari are missing allies as well? You would think that would be a priority. That takes some bravery from whomever is taking them to go after friends of the law. Do you know exactly where the patrol went missing? That might narrow our search down." She looks around for a handkerchief to give the crying woman.

Mrs. Kinter composes herself before telling more about her children's friends.

"There's a whole group of them: Gavin and Triella Winters from Songbird Hall seem to be the leaders; my daughter, Belana, is close friends with her. They have a big fellow who I think works at the Silver Stein Tavern, and a baker's apprentice as well, I believe. They've gone off on make-believe adventures outside the city walls before, sometimes for fun, sometimes 'questing' for plants, bugs, or other spell components for Gavin's boss. I gave both my children strict orders not to go gallivanting outside the city walls now that Lord Thrune has imposed a curfew, but.... Oh--I'm not sure what to think at this point!"

The Silver Stein Tavern (Kintargo's Redroof District)

Kiri reports that the coast is clear, and your group slips back unseen into the streets of Kintargo. The nearest point of interest on Lydia's map is indeed the Silver Stein Tavern, a large watering hole that appears to have rooms for rent on its second story.

The Silver Stein’s sign—not surprisingly—features a foamy mug of ale. A large piece of waxed parchment has been posted on the wall just outside the entrance. This poster reads: “Now Serving Our Guests All Night! Bring Your Own Bedroll or Rent a Blanket! Doors Locked at Curfew and Opened Again at Dawn.”

Inside is a sprawling common room featuring dozens of table and chair sets and booths along the walls. A couple of teenaged serving girls are waiting on the few customers currently present while a tall, dark-haired woman tends a long bar off in one dark corner. “Seat yourselves wherever you’d please,” one of the servers says, flashing a winsome smile as she heads to the bar to fill an order. It’s not she who comes to wait your table moments later, however: it’s the tall female barkeep. She looks rather tough…and maybe a bit angry.

”Alyss Rustwell—I own the place,” the woman says gruffly by way of introduction while sticking out a rather large and calloused hand. ”Never seen any of you in here before. What are your names and what’s your line of work?”

Leora shakes Alyss's hand. "I'm Leora. I used to wait tables at the Thrashing Badger, but I've just been helping out wherever I can find work these days. Hey, I like your idea of a lock-in. Customers can have a few more beers if they don't even have to walk home and can just curl up on the floor!"

Leora keeps a careful eye on Alyss, wondering if she hasn't had much sleep lately because of the lock-ins and is in a bad mood because of it, or if it's because they aren't regulars at the Silver Stein, or something else.

A figure gets up from a table in the back corner, stopping to place something on the bar before making his way over. As he gets closer, the person is revealed to be Domitius, looking like something the cat dragged in, unshaven and with what look like a few newly-healed bruises on his face. He allows himself a small relieved smile as he addresses the owner.

"Ma'am, I left a few coins on the bar; it ought to cover a round for my friends." Dom's gaze falls on his comrades, examining each briefly. He raises a curious eyebrow at the one he doesn't know, but shrugs it off, Good enough for them, that's good enough for me.

He pauses, unsure where to start, before he wearily says, "Hi, folks."

Dom's sudden reappearance seems to take Alyss a bit by surprise. "You know this fellow?" she asks the larger group. After a bit of internal debate, she also asks, "You folks aren't here about any gambling debt my bouncer Mortan may or may not have run up, right?"

Leora Only:

Hearing that you once waited tables seems to have endeared you a bit to the tavern keeper. You're pretty sure the woman's initial gruffness was born out of concern that maybe your group of unfamiliar faces was stopping by to collect her bouncer's gambling debts.

Domitius’ relief at seeing Davina is short-lived, as as it is rapidly followed by pangs of guilt at having left her, and all of the others as well, in the lurch. You were supposed to just be gone an hour, two at most. "My apologies, sudarynya," he replies, looking down, unable to meet her gaze. "I went chasing Fire, and things, they did not go as I wanted them to." Dom hopes the others catch his reference to Sabrina’s nickname; there are enough unfamiliar faces about that he’s not comfortable using full names right now.

Changing the topic (for now), he turns to the owner of the Stein. "But Miss Rustwell, she doesn’t want to hear our tale, not when she has missing employee, yes? Maybe you will let us help you, tell us anything that might help…"

Once again Kiri was out of her element, though she was relieved that Domitius had returned to them. She was quite cross with him for leaving in the first place but when he spoke of Apprentices friend she began to understand. Still, some discipline was demanded for so she focused and sent a sharp burst of air to Gib's Smack him for his thoughtlessness. She glowered at him and said, "Next time tell us where you're going, Apprentice is already missing, don't need a second one missing Brute." It seemed she'd developed a nickname for Domitus now.

Domitius glowers at the strix woman, muttering, “Ty ne moy rukovoditel', Kiri!” That puff of wind thing she did sometimes was as annoying as ever, but Dom took it as a promising sign that she wasn’t engaging in any new exasperating behaviors. “You and I could keep up the spory until Aroden returned, and it wouldn’t find Miss Rustwell’s missing employee, so let’s cool it, hmm?” Dom turns back to the tavern’s owner, an apologetic look on his face over the spat.

The Silver Stein Tavern (Kintargo's Redroof District)

When it becomes clear to her that her bouncer isn't the only young person missing in the neighborhood, Alyss's attitude switches from gruff to worried. She says that the friends often gathered at her tavern in the past, though less frequently lately. Alyss says that while Gavin is certainly the heart, soul, and leader of the band of teens, the priestess-in-training Triella usually was the one getting them into mischief, sneaking off into the countryside on quests to explore the nearby lands for lost ruins full of ancient tomes, forgotten treasures, and magical wonders.

She adds that Mortan has seemed distracted for the past week, growing increasingly upset up until his no-show for work. She claims that Mortan, being the largest, strongest, and toughest of the clique, often stood up for his friends, stepping in if anyone tried to start fights with his male friends or took liberties with or was disrespectful toward the young ladies. Alyss also fetches a note she found in Mortan’s room upstairs when he didn’t show up for work. She shows it to the heroes.

Mortan’s Note:

Mortan –
I know you’re worried, but please keep this matter between us for now. Meet me at the usual place an hour after curfew and I’ll take you to the others.

The note is unsigned and the penmanship less than remarkable. The ink is smudged in several places.

Neither Alyss nor any of her staff recalls having seen anyone matching Jessibel’s description in their establishment in recent days.

"Good to see you again," Leora says to Dom, glad to hear that her friend was gone for a good reason, and hadn't been caught by the Dottari or his former master. She knows they'll have a chance to talk later, once they're done in the Silver Stein.

"Do you think there's a chance they went outside the city? Or did Mortan and his friends have any particular places they liked to meet inside Kintargo?"

Leora is pleased that they're getting more information. But on the other hand, it seems like the more they learn, the harder it will be to find the teens. Who knew where they could have gone outside the city? And in the week or so they'd been gone, they could have gone anywhere.

The Streets of Kintargo (Redroof District)

Looks like the Potions shop is next closest, but I'll put both remaining businesses under spoilers, just in case you'd rather go to the clothing shop first.

Paqshari's Potions & Poultices:

The sign outside this shop features emerald green lettering…and lots of it! ‘Paqshari’s Potions and Poultices’ is written in large capital letters. Underneath, in smaller green script, is the addendum ‘Alchemical Wonders and Spell Components, Too!’

The proprietor proves to be a bustling, vivacious, and...well, green female gnome with a twinkle in her emerald eyes and a jump in her step. Her hair is green, her extended arching eyebrows are green, and her satin robe is green. When she speaks, it even appears that her tongue is green, but then you notice that she’s sucking on a piece of hard candy…lime or green apple, perhaps?

”What can I do for you good people?” the gnome asks with a smile. ”Bath oils for relaxation? Incense for calming the nerves or a quiet period of inner reflection? A cream to reduce the signs of aging on your skin? Wait—you look like you might be magic-users. Need to refresh your spell components, perhaps? We’re temporarily out of fireflies for light spells—some fellow just bought all I had in stock—but I have most other basics ready for purchase!”

Pinch's Haberdashery:

This small shop has a prime location along Redroof Road a couple block or so northwest of the dilapidated Fair Fortune Livery your group investigated a few weeks back. Still, its sign is small and faded, and all of the foot traffic on the street passes it by without a second look. When you enter, a thin, nervous-looking man emerges from a back room, adjusting the shirt and belt of his rather shabby outfit.

”Good day,” the man says. To Davina and Leora he adds, ”Doing some shopping for your husbands, perhaps? You’ll find my wares top-notch and the selection vast.”

Hey, I can do magic, Dom thinks to himself. I made Kossrani's arm disappear...! He smiles his I'm-thinking-bad-thoughts smile, which is rapidly replaced with a look of amazement as he starts just wandering through the shop. Lots of the stuff in here just seems so damned interesting. He forgets to ask Paqshari any questions as he just wanders around the joint, taking in her inventory. The topic of alchemy had help an interest for him ever since his first night at Davina's house, when she damn near blew the house up. He appreciated its destructive potential, but was starting to get a handle on just how many different ways it could be used. Where possible, he tries to only look with his eyes, not his hands, unless, you know, he sees something really cool.

At one point, he edges over to Leora, and in his most careful low voice, asks her, "She looks really, well, uh, different from Ms Laria, right? That's not just me?"

Is it conceivable that Dom might not know the difference between a gnome and a halfling?

In case that isn't enough to convince Ms Paqshari, she adds "Plus, once we're done getting him out of whatever mess he's in, I'll have some time to brew up another batch of beer. Do you sell beer brewing stuff? Hops, yeast, that kind of stuff?"

After she's done, Leora realizes Did I just roll my eyes? Jessi must be rubbing off on me...

Since I'll totally forget to RP this later... can we pretend this happens after we're done at the Potion shop?

"Gavin's a good lad!" she snaps at Davina. "Or at least he was until this past week or so. If there's anyone to blame, it's that fake priestess he hangs around with...Triella! She’s nothing but trouble, always putting wild thoughts in Gavin’s head! If it’s not religious proselytizing one week it’s studying wizard magic the next or making an expedition to Nisroch the week after that! That ditz has the brain of a flea and the attention span of a gnat!”

She lowers the glowing tanglefoot bag a bit and eyeballs everyone with deep suspicions. "Who sent you here?" she demands.

Nisroch? Does that make a lick of sense? What business does an apprentice Shelynite priestess have makin' trips to Nidal? Did, uh... Gavin, right? Did Gavin ever say what those trips were about? Did just Triella go?" Dom drops his hands, shaking his head. "This freaking town, I swear it makes less sense every day..."

Later with Leora:
Domitius listens to Leora's attempt to explain. She's never been one to just make stuff up out of the aether, but this seems odd. He tries to summarize, enumerating each point on one of hhis fingers as he does.

"Shoes. Colorful. Gnomes. Uh, okay, we'll go with that."

He thought about asking where pixies and leprechauns fit into this arrangement, but was afraid Leora would actually tell him.

"Well, I didn't mean to say that the kiddos actually made trips to Nisroch...but that's an example of the sort of foolishness that Triella girl would throw out on some mad lark!" the gnome sputters.

"Gavin has a good head on his shoulders--he could talk that witch out of her more outlandish suggestions, I'm sure--but she always had weird ideas that it would be 'exciting' or 'interesting' to visit strange or dangerous places as learning experiences. She also got pretty good at suggesting that their group could hunt down rare components for the work Gavin and I do here to make her silly adventures more palatable to my young apprentice."

The gnome lets out an aggravated little shriek and her shoulders slump a bit. "Well...maybe I'm being a bit hard on Triella...maybe I exaggerated a little, but...Gavin could become a fine alchemist in his own right if he'd stop hanging around with that gadabout and concentrate on his work."

Again her eyes narrow in suspicion. "Did the folks at Songbird Hall send you to ask about Gavin? Or was it that creep, Peter Pinch?"

T'chazzar glances back to the other Ravens to see if this was related to Songbird Hall or this 'Peter Pinch,' since he has no way of knowing.

Domitius' puzzled expression lightens, but doesn't completely disappear.

"Who's Peter Pinch, why's he a creep, and how does he figure into this?"

Domitius flashes a small apologetic glance at Davina, feeling like he barged into the end of this sort of affair that is usually more her business. I wouldn't like it if she was hanging some guy out a window trying to scare information out of him. Actually, he considers, that would be pretty amazing...

Paqshari's Potions & Poultices (Redroof District)

Paqshari gives Dom a glare like she thinks he may be feigning ignorance but answers his questions anyways.

"Peter Pinch is the father of two of Gavin's friends--Belana and Pavel--and was in here last night demanding that I tell him where they and Gavin were! As if it's my job to watch over his wayward spawn! Anyways, right before he left in a huff he said, 'No son of mine is going to become involved with a no-good snake oil salesman!' The nerve! He seemed to think my dear Gavin was a bad influence on his precious Pavel and couldn't see that Triella's likely the troublemaker of the group!"

After glaring at Dom a few moments longer, the gnome turns to Davina and asks for a description of her missing friend. She shakes her head, claiming not to have seen Jessibel in her store.

"Only unusual customer was the fellow who bought out my fireflies--creepy-looking Queensman. He had wavy black hair, bloodshot eyes, and a crazy grin. Also looked like he was too big for the suit of armor he was wearing. Wasn't interested in anything else--he just wanted all the fireflies I had in stock."

"Now, if you've nothing more to bother me with...either buy something or get out!"

I'll use the inspiration if it's not too late.

Davina notices the grin from Dom, but only nods and let's him ask questions. "We've had several people ask us to looking into the missing teens. It did start with our missing friend from Songbird Hall. Thank you for your time. We'll continue looking for Gavin and the others." she nods politely, "I'll be back to purchase some things later. I'm running low on alchemical supplies, but now isn't the time to shop."

Oddly, those posts time-stamped Wednesday didn’t show up for me until just last night…

After leaving Paqshari’s shop, Domitius says to no one in particular, “Well she was... interesting.” After barely a beat, he turns to Davina. “Ms Eradon, what else can fireflies be used for? We don’t really think the crazy Queensman guy she mentioned is really using them for light spells, do we? We’ve got to get a line on that fellow.”

In conversation with Leora, (as was mentioned in spoiler text earlier) Domitius suddenly notices Leora’s battered condition. Bozshe moi, woman, what happened to you? You look like you’ve been dragged by a bull for a half a mile.”

The New Messages notifications feature of the Paizo boards wasn't working for a couple of days, so that's why the Wednesday posts didn't show up 'til today. Also (so far as I can tell), fireflies' main use in magic are indeed as the material component for light spells.

Lastly, since Pinch's Haberdashery is the last location on Lydia's list that you've yet to visit, I'll post the intro details for that encounter below. If you guys choose to go elsewhere or do something else...please ignore it. ;)

Pinch's Haberdashery (Redroof District)

This small shop has a prime location along Redroof Road a couple blocks or so northwest of the dilapidated Fair Fortune Livery your group investigated a few weeks back.

Domitius raises an eyebrow at the name on the sign. Pinch? So this is the guy that... oh, this might get interesting!

When the man goes right to addressing Leora and Davina, Dom takes it as an excuse to go over the man's wares, with much less enthusiasm than he had in Paqshari's shop. Too short. Too fancy. Too.. orange? Too flimsy, this one'll rip first time you wear it in a fight. This one isn't bad, but man, there's just no way you'll ever get a bloodstain out of that one, I don't care what kind of magic you use.

T'chazzar continues to wait quietly for the investigation to play out.

She gives the wares a quick once over, "Husbands can be a lot of trouble. Now a paramour those can be interesting. I don't need anything today. We're actually here looking for some missing young people. I understand one of yours has gone missing. Do you have any ideas about where they might have gone?" She gives him a bright smile.

To Dom's question about her battered appearance, Leora answers "Some dwarf thought we had something to do with an escaped strix prisoner, and he had a lot of friends..."

She sighs, hoping that their final contact is a little more helpful than the previous ones, and they learn something that will put them on the trail of the missing kids and Jessi.

Thanks Dom, T'chazzar healed me earlier, forgot to update my HP.

Haberdashery

"Good afternoon," Leora says politely. "I have some friends in the theater, and since I was in the area, I thought I would stop by and check it out, let them know if they could find anything for some of their performances."

After browsing for a few minutes, Leora goes back to Mr Pinch. "By the way, a friend of ours went missing, looking for Triella Winters, who's been gone for about a week. When we were at Songbird Hall, trying to find any hint of where they might have gone, one of the priestesses mentioned that Triella is friends with your daughter. Have you heard anything about Triella, or have any ideas of where she might have gone? We're really worried about our friend and want to do what we can to help any other missing kids."

EDIT: Looks like Davina got to it first.

Pinch's Haberdashery (Redroof District)

Davina's mention of missing young people gets Peter Pinch's attention, but it's Leora's mention of Triella that gets the man talking.

”That doe-eyed priestess, Triella--I’ll bet it was that innocent little viper who lured my dear, sweet Belana into…whatever! I found a note…I thought maybe they snuck out after curfew—I’d heard Bel mention a graveyard once—and got caught by the dottari, but the watchmen I’ve talked to all say that’s not the case. Well, one insensitive bastard said that a lot of dissidents have been slipping out of the city recently, or that maybe—being young, impressionable, and naïve—they’d joined a pathetic group of local rebels who would soon be crushed by the Lord-Mayor’s forces. But my children—hell, all of their friends so far as I know—have absolutely zero interest in politics. Their heads were filled with daydreams of exploration and adventure.”

He asks you to wait and disappears into the back room momentarily to fetch the note.

Note to Belana:

No need to cry—I’m fine! Meet at the usual spot. Love, T.

((The note’s on the same kind of paper as the one Alyss found in Mortan’s room. The penmanship features more flourishes than Mortan’s note, but they look sort of sketchy…perhaps faked.))

Everyone please make a Sense Motive check and a Knowledge (local) check; I'll post results tomorrow. You guys might finally have a decent clue!

Damn, but everyone seems to have it in for this Triella girl, Dom thinks to himself as he looks over a particularly unappealing shirt. He takes a moment and tries to think of which graveyards are closest to this neighborhood.

In response to Leora

Leora wrote:

Dom does his best to quell his concern at Leora's answer. Guess I can't be surprised by that. Where there's one tupitsa dwarf, there's usually a whole damn clan willing to avenge him.

"They try any more of that," he growls, "And I'll make sure they've got a lot fewer friends." Dom is eager to be back on the giving end, after his time at the tender mercies of Old Man Sarini.
