"I'll leave word with the City Watch to keep an eye out for this Tiberius fellow and alert us as soon as they find him so we can get back here and find out if he knows anything more than what we've already heard. Who knows, maybe we'll get lucky and have some information come to us."

Well, as Grigory goes to speak with the City Watchmen on duty about Tiberius, the guard responds, "Tiberius? He was here this morning. It's his usual spot. Drunk as always, and ranting on about giant snakes and men with glowing foreheads, of all things. We ran him off as we set up our perimeter. We can keep an eye out for him if you want, but he's never sober, or sane, enough, to actually know anything."

"Let us know if he pops up again. I'd rather waste a few minutes talking to a drunkard than miss something that might end up helping our investigation," Grigory tells the guard. "You never know what detail will turn out being key to the whole case."

He turns back to Dublaine and Dr. Lynch. "Back to headquarters? The others might have turned something up at West Naos to tie things together. And like Eudonius said, it's probably best not to leave that body sitting in the carriage for too much longer."

Dublaine simply nods. He to felt that the man had more reasons than most to be a target, perhaps a racially motivated one. [b]"I can't help but wonder if this whol issue between Chelish nation and the Varisians, might be a link worth bearing in mind."

Dublaine assists with the transfer, having been no stranger to dead bodies in his time. "I think we ought to talk to the others and get to looking over this fella for clues later?" Dublaine says awaiting Eudonius' answer.

Lady Trace's return startles Krojun a bit as he was contemplating why anyone would bring down an entire building let alone two.

"A what caused the collapse?" he says looking puzzled, then continues: "Well not much, I went by my old station after you left and asked them to keep an eye out for any stolen merchandise from either of the sites. Not that I expect much, the history of stolen goods is hard to come by. What about you?"

Ahh, looks like Lady Trace and Krojun have made it back as well," Grigory remarks while holding the door for Eudonius and Dublaine as they transfer Mr. Flynn's body into the cold room.

"So... Find out anything interesting at West Naos Market?" he asks. "We've got a body, a scrap of blue paper we think came from the City Planner's office, some complaints from Mr. Kinman the owner of the Cherished Chelish, which was the shop most damaged by the collapse about a Varisian Witch and a Shoanti savage... And the City Watch told us about a drunkard who hangs out near Irefoot Hall. He was apparently babbling about giant snakes and guys with glowing foreheads if that makes any sense to you guys."

And no offense, Krojun, but you might want to sit out of our dealings with Mr. Kinman... he seems more than a bit bigoted against Varisians and Shoantis and he was unpleasant enough to get information out of without a predisposition to distrust us because of our ethnic backgrounds."

Grigory picks up one of the sets of manacles the City Watch has left at headquarters for the MSI squadmembers' use and slips them into his pocket.

"I had nearly forgotten about the lunches Mrs. Brigglespan had sent with us... Guess I got caught up in the investigation. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting pretty hungry," he says, plucking a sandwich from the basket. "Thanks again, Mrs. B."

"Now, there were a few things we learned or found at Irefoot Hall that I thought merited investigation after lunch," he mentions between bites. "The first being our new tenant in the cold room, Mr. Brynden Flynn. I think we should pay a visit to his former employers, Guards and Wards, to find out whatever we can about him. I'm confident his death wasn't an accident, but without knowing more we can't really tell whether he was intentionally targeted by whoever caused the collapse or if he was just killed in an attempt to permanently silence an eyewitness."

The second item on our post-lunch agenda," Grigory interrupts himself to wash his sandwich down with some water. "...should be a stop at the City Planner's office, if everyone agrees that the symbol on this scrap of blue paper does, in fact, match that of the City Planner."

"Anyone else have any other suggestions? I hate to seem pushy."

After dropping the body into the cold room Eudonius hesitates a moment before answering Dublaine. He seems reluctant to leave the lab, almost eager to begin working on the corpse.

You are right, of course. We should talk to the others...

He follows Dublaine back to the group and nods agreement as Grigory talks, waiting to hear what news his two other collegues broght.

Lady Trace suddenly looks up from her notes, as though oblivious that Grigory was speaking, "Anyone know whether the people who make the buildings or the city planners themselves use earth elementals? If not we should find out while at the city planners."

Looking at Grigory "Sorry, did not intend to interrupt."

She thinks back about what Grigory said,

Why, what is the connection of earth elementals with the city planners or the collapsed buildings m' Lady?

Male Human (Shoanti/Varisian) Fighter/1

Krojun walks over to the basket and picks up a sandwich, "Well I don't think we found much at the market. I am not really sure what Rumblemountain said about the collapse."

He turns to Lady Trace: "I think you have a better idea about what she said Lady Trace."

Then continues: "But from what I gather from the merchants, they didn't see anything suspicious and it's to early to tell if they are missing something from their shops."

He pauses, while chewing on a bite, thinking about what to say next and continues: "Grigory, you said, you found a piece of blue paper from the City Planner's office, any idea about what it is?"

And adds a bit annoyed: "You're properly right about me sitting out on a Kinman interview, what an old moron, but we might need to hear, what he has to say. I sometimes wonder if all merchants are like that, he sounds like some I talked to at the market."

"Should we talk to Guards and Wards before or after Lynch is done with the body?" he asks looking at group.

And finally adds: "Would someone please tell me what an earth elemental is?"

Lady Trace remembers hearing in one of her conjuration classes about the practice of summoners, magic users with a natural talent at summoning creatures, able to keep them on this plane ten times longer than conventional wizards, and form a bond with a unique creature called an eidolon. The glowing rune indicates the summoner-eidolon bond.

"Here's the scrap of paper," Grigory tells Krojun, sliding the tiny piece of evidence carefully across the table for his inspection. "It almost looks like it was torn off the corner of a blueprint. If we can get access to the City Planner's records and blueprints we might be able to find the sheet it was torn from."

"All the important people at the City Planner's are likely off to lunch right now if they're anything like most government agencies I've dealt with, so I don't see any huge rush to get over there.

"I have no problem with Dr. Lynch doing his investigation on the body now if he chooses, I just wanted to make sure I got finished with my lunch before the autopsy got underway," he jokes.

Knowledge local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

After studying the paper scrap while he eats, Krojun says: "Well sounds like a decent idea, it sure is worth a try. I was thinking that we might have an easier time at the City Planner's if all the big guys are out to lunch?"

He explains: "I guess it would be nice to know what happened to the poor guard before visiting his employer. It might add some questions."

Male Elf Rogue/1

Dublaine listened intently as the others passed about the scraps of information they'd gained so far. Although reluctant to assist Eudonius he knew his deft fingers might aid in the discovery of clues. And he felt he still had some headway to make with Grigory, who clearly was a capable and insightful man.

Ok lets get to the body, I agree with Krojun about getting into the city planners whilst perhaps the more experienced and likely less cooperative members are the guild are out to lunch.

F Human Rog1

Looking at Dr. Lynch, "Well, the only clue I found at the site was the strange markings on the inside of the foundations. I believe these were made by earth elementals. Which means the collapse was intentional." She looks around as she makes that last statement.

"Actually, the crazy guy sounds like he was talking about a summoner, which is a mage that specializes in bringing creatures, like elementals, to our plane to do their bidding. So keep an eye out for a mage with a snake eidolon. An eidolon is like a special kind of familiar for summoners, and they usually have glowing runes on their foreheads."

After Krojun suggests going to the city planners while they are away, "I agree with Krojun, lets go to the planners and see what kind of trouble we can stir up."

Looking at Dr. Lynch, "Did you want us to wait for you or do you want to look at the body while we go?"

"Mrs. Brigglespan, any important information or any idea of who we would want to talk to and/or avoid at the City Planner's office or Guards and Wards?"

My Knowledge (Local) for that same info... 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

"Lady Trace, this information about earth elementals and summoners makes me think tracking down the drunkard, Tiberius, from Irefoot Hall may be necessary. The City Watchmen discounted his rantings as too much drink, but if he did see something significant we'll have to find him before whoever was responsible for the collapses finds out about him and decides to eliminate another eyewitness."

As much as I hate to suggest it because of the gameplay complications, splitting up again might be our best option... If Lynch does stay behind, I think whoever has the highest Heal bonus should also stay to aid him. I know he's planning to take 20 which will likely beat whatever DC is needed, but I would assume an autopsy is a one-shot deal so I'm thinking we shouldn't leave anything to chance when we can avoid it.

Edit: Wow... What a glorious Knowledge (Local) roll. Hope Mrs. Brigglespan knows more than I do.

F Human Rog1

"Good point Grigory, I guess the city planners will have to wait."

She gets up, grabs her stuff, and takes a drink from her waterskin. She ignores the sandwiches having eaten hers while at the library but she is ready to and is just waiting to see if everyone is going to go or if she is going to go to Irespan while waiting for Dr. Lynch to cut up dead people.

That won't be me then ;-)I'd be better off trying to track down this drunk with Grigory.

"Well it looks like some of us need to go the planners, whilst we also try and track down Tiberius, we were told the two places he tends to frequent, it doesn't sound as if it should be too hard." Dublaine added a hopeful note in his voice.

Hearing Lady Trace speak about the summoner Eudonius nods.
That is a very good insight. Whoever this person is I am sure there aren t that many summoners with a snake eidolon in Magnimar. It maybe be worth it to ask around about him in the Mage College and in the town's magic shops.

Eudonius pauses for a moment to reflect.
This Tiberius character may add more to the description, I would suggest you start with him. I will begin working on our friend the nightwatcher immediately. Whatever you guys decide to do let me know your itinerary, i will catch up with the group as soon as I am done here.

I am not sure somebody can aid another on a take 20. Can he? But even if it is possible I dont think it will be necessary now. DM Nazard you did not answer the questions I posted on the OOC discussion thread about the autopsy.

So it seems like Eudonius is staying with the body, and the others are going to find Tiberius, or is somebody going to the City Planners' or Guards and Wards?

Mrs. Brigglespan's Knowledge (Local) roll: 1d20 ⇒ 17 plus unknown modifiers :)

"Hmmm...people to avoid? I believe there are only two or three workers at the City Planner's office. Ms. Rumblemountain is in charge of that department, and she has an architect and a file clerk, if I recall. The Council of Ushers managed to slip its creation into some budget fifty years ago, but it never really got proper funding, and it's more as a tax grab for new construction than anything. As for Guards and Wards, they are a private security company, with mundane and magical services. As I recall, they've always co-operated quite well with the Watch, so I wouldn't expect you to have any problems, unless of course they were negligent, which is unlikely. They have a good reputation for providing quality services, though they do tend to over-hype what you're getting from them. I believe a couple of the abjuration professors from the Stone moonlight for them, creating their magical wardings."

"The summoner and snake eidolon theory explains the large furrows we found at Irefoot Hall... We've got the 'who' and 'how' parts narrowed down a bit it seems, anyone have any ideas as to the 'why'?"

The scrap of paper from the City Planners' office makes me a little suspicious. I'm wondering if whoever caused the collapse was working with/for the City Planners or if they just stole plans for the hall.

"The City Watchmen at Irefoot Hall told us Tiberius would likely be hanging around Underbridge or Rags End. I also told them to hold him up if he turned up a Irefoot Hall and send word back here. We might as well stop back there just in case."

I'm going to operate under the assumption that Lady Trace and Krojun have given us the main details of their investigation at West Naos to move things along a little bit rather than waiting for us to role-play all the information to each other.

"Maybe Ms. Rumblemountain will be there by the time we arrive and we can try to get some more information out of her. It would be nice to get access to the City Planners' blueprints of the two crime scenes one way or another."

"I'll head back to Irefoot Hall with whoever wants to accompany me in the search for Tiberius. I suppose if Ms. Rumblemountain is there we could sneak one or two people over to her office and try to round up some documentation and other information while she's preoccupied."

If nobody stays to help with the autopsy, I guess we should all head to Irefoot Hall together and make the decision to stick together or split up from there."

"Dr. Lynch, you might want to head to Irefoot Hall if we're not back before you finish your work. We can conceal a message for you there to let you know where we headed. I'll take my chalk and mark one of the walls of the grand entrance before we leave Irefoot Hall... I'll list who went where with a pretty simple system: A square for the City Planners' office, Circle for Guards & Wards and a Triangle for Underbridge/Rags End. G for me, D for Dublaine, K for Krojun and T for Lady Trace. To anyone else, they would look like meaningless grafitti, but it should tell you exactly where to look for us."

Ok but I would not advise spliting up again anymore, last time we had a close call on the ruins...there is strengh in numbers. And more chances of better rolls There is no reason to rush things, Cheliax was not build in a day...

After a second of reflexion.
Also be carefull not to get into the wrong side of Miss Rumblemountain. We have no reason to suspect her at this time, do we? She is the only engeneering expert we have and we need her help. Try to avoid going behind her back.

Nazard, i will continue to check on the thread, please let me know when my 4 hours of work are done in game time.

"Honestly doctor, I'm not sure what is best. We will cover more ground if we split up, but you're right about strength in number." I think I'll also join the search."

With that Dublaine grabs some food, eats some then wraps the rest carefully into a pack, thinking it might come in handy later.

Ok I agree that we'd be wise to stick together and also that we'd save ourselves a lot of leg work if we check back to make sure we've not missed Tiberius already at Irefoot hall. And unless we have to look for him at Underbridge or Rags End, I guess its just a question then if we think the city planners or Guards and Wards.

"As far as suspecting the City Planners, the scrap of paper we found at Irefoot Hall makes me wonder... If it came from the City Planners office and only thee people work there, it was either stolen without their knowledge or there's a one-in-three chance that any particular City Planners employee was involved."

"I'm not suggesting we should do anything outside the scope of the law, per se, to get what we're after at the City Planners... We might just hae to step into some gray areas if the City Planners aren't as forthcoming with information as we need them to be. My hope is that I'm plotting alternatives for no reason and Rumblemountain and her staff will give us free access to anything we need."

"I guess the rest of us will be off to Underbridge by way of Irefoot Hall. Good luck with the investigation, Doc."

So while Edonius cuts into his work, the rest of the group returns to Irefoot Hall. The guards there flag you down as you arrive. "You know that homeless guy you wanted to talk to? I got a couple Watchmen sitting on him in the alley out back. He's about to lose it, too!"

The Watchman leads you quickly towards the alleyway. Long before you get there, you hear an irate voice yelling, "...mine! I demand you release me, filthy pigs and thieves. A man's honest life's work. Get your hands off it! This are my treasures. Mine! Let me go, worthless spawn of goblin tarts! I'll..." and further insults and tirades of a similar nature. You come into view of two Watchmen cornering a filthy bearded man against a wall, spears pointed at him. A rickety hand cart filled with assorted junk stands to one side. The man’s black-and-grey hair and beard are both so long, filthy, and tangled that it is impossible to tell where one stops and the other begins. What little of his skin you can see is filthy, and his entire body gives off the aroma of sweat, garbage, and sour wine, as does the collection of garbage in his cart.

"We'll handle things from here, gentlemen, but stay close just in case things get out of hand," He instructs the City Watchmen keeping Tiberius at spearpoint.

With MSI moving in, the Watchmen back away. One might even say quickly. :) They do stay close though, and hold their spears at the ready.

"Who? M what? What do you want with my treasures? Keep your filthy hands off my things!! Thieves and bullies all of you!"

Still, with the spears removed somewhat and the calm words, he appears less flustered than before. The bulging veins on his forehead have subsided somewhat, though as you watch, you're quite certain you see the man's beard twitch and move on its own volition.

Glad Dublaine specified that he was bringing his leftovers from lunch along with him... I'll wait for him to decide what to do with them, but my suggestion is to appease the beggar with the free food Mrs. B. gave us. Alternatively, we could try to intimidate him with a threat about the penalty for withholding information from officers of the law, but I'm not sure the 15 I rolled would be successful without aid (ideally someone else will beat that and my roll will aid them instead).

Handing the sandwiches over, still carefully wrapped, Dublaine moves up to the man. Having lived on the street, he is less shocked and worried about the state of the man. His demenour is relaxed and comfortable getting close as the man would allow, without getting into his space.

Dublaine, do you think you can take a peek at Tiberius' pile of treasures without him noticing? I'll wait to see what Tiberius has to say before asking him anything.

Tiberius looks at the sandwiches like you were offering him rotten garbage to eat. "Sandwiches? Sandwiches aren't going to help my memory. I need good food for my poor memory. Sandwiches make my belly ache." He pauses as he fishes a cockroach out of his beard, holding it wiggling. "Come. I show you." Tiberius absently bites the head off the cockroach, then grabs his cart as he chews, giving Dublaine a glare for getting too close, and starts pushing it towards the street, totally oblivious to the spear points.

Once out in the street, he ambles down the road a short ways and points to a nice-looking cafe, the kind that runs between 1 and 2 gold a meal. "A man needs to sit in the shade to eat a proper meal. Only way the memory comes back."

"He'd better have some pretty good memories of what happened floating around in that noggin of his if we're going to be springing for a meal here. Especially after he just munched on a beard-cockroach. I haven't even eaten at a place this nice in months."

I’m not sure how I want to proceed… I’ll wait for more input from the rest of you. I don’t feel like setting the precedent that we’ll just shell out our own money for information, but don’t want to waste our good diplomacy rolls by trying to intimidate or bluff him by claiming that our unit has a rule against carrying money and/or buying information.

I already offered coins but a single meal is cheaper if hes that insistent

She follows the man to the cafe, quite nearly rolling her eyes at the prospect of this "meeting".

Will our combined Sense Motive rolls confirm my suspicion that Tiberius is intentionally pretending he can't remember just to try to take advantage of us for a free meal? If it does confirm that, I'll say the following:

"That's the only way memory comes back, is it?" Grigory muses. "And what assurance do we have that this meal you're demanding will make any useful memories come back? Aside from our option to lock you up for obstructing our investigation, I mean. If we're paying for lunch, I want to know for sure that it's going to be worth our while."

He definitely is just pretending in order to extort food.

Tiberius pulls himself up at Grigory's veiled threat.

"Oh, it's useful info. Only the best for you fine officers. At least, I think it is. Hard to remember."

Somewhat catching on to Grigory's implications, "How about you tell us what you know and if it is good we buy you lunch and if not we let you be but if it is nothing but you wasting our time then we make you disappear, permanently."

Good cop, bad cop?

"If you can't even remember whether it's useful information without us buying you food, why should we trust that you'll be able to remember the information itself once we've fed you? How do we know you won't just eat and then keep claiming can't remember until we buy you something else? You'll either need to remember something useful now to convince us you might remember more after you eat, or we'll have to hope you remember something useful after you've had a night or two behind bars to think about it while we go through your treasures looking for anything that interests us. I'd try to remember something now if I were you."

Whilst the others continued to via with Tiberius, Dublaine continued to carefully poke about the man's stuff, but very discreetly. He didn't want to be the focus, as the others worked on him. So he kept the other side of the cart, letting his eyes wander over what he saw, with his arms casually draped over poking randomly as if bored and passing time.

"As the lady said, a little information now and food afterwards" Krojun adds, hoping to get the man talking and keep his attention away from Dublaine.

Hoping that Grigory's statement doesn't turn Tiberius' attention towards his treasure, he continues: "Keep your eyes on the meal and make it a little easier for everyone with a little information."
