Hey folks,

In the wake of some new restrictions on when I can access the internet while at work (90% of the time I can usually spend on PbPs) I am not gonna be able to keep up a consistent posting rate for this game and I am gonna have to drop out.

You can probably just pretend Sinmara never existed - she didnt have a chance to do much for the party besides shoot a few arrows anyway.

I hate to drop from a game, but if I tried to stay it would only cause problems for the group. Good luck with the rest of the AP!

Sinmara, I know I said this privately but I understand completely and am sad that the situation is the way it is. I look forward to gaming with you in the future, and there's an open invitation for Sinamara to come back if you wish.

Last day of add/drop is today! I'm not going to get a post in (I have work, then class, then WotR game night, so I won't have a break till I get home at 10-11 PMish) today but it's on my list of things to do tomorrow.

So, funny story about editing the campaign... I can't. I've sent numerous requests to website feedback but haven't heard back about it.

It's at the point that it may make the most sense to abandon this thread and start a new one, but I'd like to wait until we're at a break in the books before doing so. Does that make sense?

Updating around 3 PM today, fyi. I've been getting migraines lately. Sorry for not moving you on earlier! (Also, I bought a PS4 yesterday, and No Man's Sky weirdly doesn't make migraines better. Who would've thunk?)

Also, it sounds like (in either case) you want to follow the trail. Spoiler: what time of day you go doesn't really matter due to Reasons(TM), so we'll just move on this afternoon.

I've got a paladin of Shelyn based on sailor moon, Archimeles, a monk based on a pastiche of every classical Greek thinker you can imagine, a traumatized (in a fun way) 'delusionist' who believes her own illusions and thinks that people don't post often are hallucinations, an executive assistant gnome staff magus, an Igor from the Disc World, an Arabian swordsman touches upon Lovecraft country, a Pharasmin inquisitor/efficiency expert/bean counter, and an abrasive wizardess based on Dungeon Magazine's former iconic blonde bob-top wizard with a quasit familiar. ;)

The ranger gains a +2 bonus on attack and damage rolls against the target of his focus.
Wild Empathy (Ex): A ranger can improve the initial attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check to improve the attitude of a person (see Using Skills). It's like she has her own little personal email server in there. ;)

As it is spell-like ability there's no real 'tell' that Rilia's doing anything, only that she is concentrating on something. Not being mad is what she projects.

I'm confused by these snide ooc comments. Are you upset because I focused on a linguistics based character? Anything that Nels says in a foreign language is to help Slothsy farther the plot along. I literally repeated what Nel said in my Saturday post here, albeit with a few edits because I forgot to google translate that post.

I am getting increasingly frustrated with trying to figure out what part of the ooc comments are geared towards my personal play style and what is geared towards Slothsy. I feel that whenever I have Nel try to take charge on Diplomacy (a skill that I have invested heavily in, plus a feat), you are there trying to wrestle control of the situation instead of giving me a chance to shine. I feel like you are treating the party as a bunch of NPCs under your thrall and that no matter what anyone else does, you have to be known and attempt to get the attention put back onto your character.

Liberty's Edge

they/them pronouns

First of all, I want to make sure everyone's characters feel valued and have time to shine at the table. I'm trying to be more consistent in posting so that way there's time for everyone to engage. I know that if I don't respond evenly to everyone, that's not a good thing. This is something that I am working on.

It would be helpful to use the discussion thread more when players want to take a certain direction. I hope that this will help people communicate better what their goals and intentions are. Another thing is to also make sure that clarifications are outside of spoilers or other places people won't read unless prompted. Rilia, I know, put in the sense motive spoiler "Her player is not. ;)", which made it clear that the annoyance was in-character. However, unless Nel looked into the spoiler, it wouldn't be clear what was going on.

In-character conflict is fine (and can add a dimension to games) if and only if conflict is managed out-of-character as well. Thank you, Nel, for bringing up your concerns up. Thanks, Rilia for provided some out-of-character clarification earlier on. However, there's clearly things that need to be worked out.

So, some things for this discussion:

1) I don't want this to be a blame game. "She started it" isn't going to be helpful.

2) I want to know what is at the root of this. There seems to be a lot of concerns and we've addressed some before. Let's see if we can get to the root of things.

3) Are people feeling left out of part of the story? I know languages are a problem with this game. What can I do to make this better?

4 ) Nel expressed concern about her character's schtick, diplomacy, being infringed upon. I do want everyone to shine at their thing... But I do think that you two can also figure out (ic and ooc) a way to good cop/bad cop/worst cop (Tamiro?) that might be acceptable to all characters?

As a note, I have mentioned before but not recently enough that you will have to start looking into Undercommon or Elven as languages. You will not be able to assume that everyone speaks common as the game progresses. This will become more apparent in the next book. I just want to be sure that people are aware of this.

I am willing to allow you to learn the language via training from Ultimate Campaign; I know not everyone has room in their build break-down to add two ranks in linguistics. Let's talk more about these specifics as well, so that way we can have everyone able to participate.

NG Half-Elf Female Alchemist 4 HP: 48/48 | AC: 20 | F: +10, R: +9, W: +8 | Perc: +8 | Stealth: +6 | Speed: 25 ft. | Infused Reagents: 3/8 | Hero Points: 0 | Active Conditions:

^I actually didn't know that languages would be important in the future although when I sit down and actually think about it it makes sense. So, thank you for mentioning that!

As one of the relatively 'new' players, I'm not entirely sure that I have much call to speak to any of these issues but I'll try. As best as I can tell, both Nel and Tamiro seem largely straightforward and direct in their interactions with other people. On their own, they could probably do a pretty good 'good cop/bad cop' routine.

Rilia strikes me as being one who prefers to solve problems through various means of subterfuge rather than resort to violence or the more straightforward method of trying to diplomance everything. In-character I can see why these three on their own tend to butt heads and to be honest I like the contrasts as a fellow player.

Aishe seems largely content to go with the flow for now and Gillian is largely the same; I imagine the further we get into the story and the longer the two of us are with the group the more you'll see of their respective motivations and character. Right now I'm trying to play Gillian as someone who's working with people that are practically strangers, some of which already have history together that she's not privy to. So that's the source of some of her own 'inner monologue' and occasional bit of snark/dry humor.

Regarding OOC stuff, I think this might be more of an issue of miscommunication and the 'tone' of text not translating very well. I don't know GGG very well but I've played with them a little in PFS on the forums as well as lurked in another game they were in once. To me, the OOC comments read more as friendly banter and/or playful teasing than true snark. But that's to me and I can see how they might be read otherwise by someone else.

Honestly, the only thing I occasionally have trouble with is all the language-switching and veiled comments and secret messages - not because I don't like them or because Gillian can't always understand them but more because her player doesn't really have much of a head for such things. I'll admit that sometimes I do have to read Rilia's posts more than once to get the gist of what's being said/done - but that's a very small concern on my part :)

*edit* One thing I like about this game is that the PCs aren't all buddy-buddy with each other. Even though I know it's usually easier to play PCs that are likely to mostly get along, sometimes I like the added dimensions that come with a party full of people who sometimes have radically divergent outlooks and may not like each other much outside of a shared goal of staying alive/doing the thing.

For the benefit of those who don't know, Rilia is only about two encounters older than the newest arrivals.

Honestly, I only had Rilia jump in because the dice were hating on Nel at that moment, and I wanted to avoid a big, noisy fight, even though at the time I kinda knew something like this discussion ('Rilia is stepping on Nel's shoes again') might happen.

Since Diplomacy looked like a bad option at the time (There had been a bad opening roll, it takes a minute to do, people hate you more when you fail bad enough, and 'hostiles' always have DCs in the 20s--Yeah, I was thinking meta, but meta is there to model real life) Rilia went with Intimidation. It's not her best roll (and yes, it too takes a minute unless you are just trying to shake someone), but given the circumstances of the encounter it looked like the better fit at that moment.

Given the possible trove of intel available, and Rilia being wise (stat-wise anyhow), I figured she would figure it would be good to separate the drow and question them individually so that we could sort out the truth from the inevitable lies. That is the only reason she wants to go around the corner with the prisoner and at least one ally, as explained in that first post after success was determined.

Yes, she's playing upon the drow's fear of possible torture just like Jack Bauer might, but like the rest of her equipment the manacles and bridle have only ever seen previous use in 'romantic' encounters, but since we are here, in-scene she can't exactly say that out loud in front of the enemy or rely on a pass secret message roll to tell the party that.

Rilia is geared to be a social character. She doesn't really fight well, can't pick locks, doesn't have a pet, she has crappy hit points and AC, and mostly support and debuff spells and abilities many of which people often forget to add to their rolls. In the same way that it is nice to have two front-line fighters in a party it is good to have a couple of faces as well. The only reason Rilia is in the spotlight right now is because I happened to be on the computer just then, two d20 rolls, and the fact that Nel and she were the best two for the job at the time. Though looking at Aishe....

On languages. Rilia has never liked that Nel and Tamiro openly speak in languages she does not understand. One, it goes against her nature to not be in on the secret. This doesn't have a lot to do with being in the lime-light so much as knowing where the light is. Being a GM myself I'll cop to generally being the person at the table that garners the most attention, though I would argue that it is in her nature to be involved in most things social though not always at the fore. Rilia is still primarily a support character in that regard. I have plenty of characters that I play that could care less and a few that would care more about that sort of thing. Two, she just sort of finds it rude. I as a player can just click buttons and see what is being said (I don't unless prompted to), but I can imagine that it rankles someone like Rilia to no end. Hence she picked up Tien as a language--something that was not in the original game plan. I have no problem with that. It's just an example of organic character growth.

On spell-like abilities. Rilia does not have a little UN interpreter on her shoulder, but obviously some momentarily distracting thing happened at the point when comprehend languages came online. I specifically didn't spoiler tag it for that reason. That and to let everyone know she had a moment of deep concentration (the sort of thing that invites attacks of opportunity), but I also wanted to be clear that it would be difficult to know what the actual effect of the magic was without some sort of detect magic/knowledge (arcana) roll. Usually intense concentration and a OOC note saying 'oh, I am casting this thing that normally has no visible component' so if anyone that can and wants to can do stuff assuming they have some way of doing so. I.e. Guy with sword in the next square takes the momentary lapse in concentration to attack; The gal with detect magic notes the presence of magic, etc.... It wasn't a case of trying to get away with anything. It was more a case of explaining what was visibly going on.

That and poor on-the-fly formatting.

Yeah, OK then.

I took a few languages just so I could feel more a part of the campaign as it's been rather difficult for us newcomers. Some hostility (in character) combined with speaking languages my character didn't know made it feel like we were quite unwelcome.

But that's passing with time, and I took the languages so I can keep up. I am a 'new guy' so I have more hoops to jump through to join with the group, and that's fine.

I didn't see this coming though. I agree Rilia has been a little grand with her abilities, particularly in camp, but it doesn't bother me as a player. This is a good discussion and hopefully we can all sort it out and proceed without too many ruffled feathers.

I am certainly enjoying myself and have no ongoing, over-arching complaints about any of you. I hope that if any of you have troubles with me or my typically aggressive playing and posting style (I've been trying to hold back so have been quieter than usual), you'll let me know via PM before it becomes a problem. My doors are open, and my skin is thick. :)

Aishe, Gillian for the hostility when you were introduced, I apologize. I was just trying to keep in character with Nel, which had mostly been dealing with hostile enemies, and so when she was approached by three new characters, one of which had a note from someone she already didn't like, it came out a bit nastier than I intended. Sinmara was someone whom I knew in real life and had already discussed some of situation with before they posted.

I will try to be more forthcoming with what Nel is saying when she speaks her thousand dialects, as I had not realized that I was slacking in this manner, but looking back it becomes more apparent that I was leaving people out.

Another option for the language problem is to possibly introduce the background skill system from Pathfinder Unchained. What it essentially does, is it divides up all of the skills into adventuring skills and background skills and gives everyone their normal allotted skills per level plus two skill points that can only be used on background skills. PRD Source. (Though why slight of hand is in the background skill section, I will never know).

Rilia, I would also like to kindly ask you tone back the sexuality. While I understand its part of your character its really been starting to go over the line of what is necessary.

As for languages, Tamiro speaks to nel in tien as it is his native language. He uses it sometimes if he wants to make remarks, but more often than not, its just more comfortable for him.

I have been doing what I can to tone back Tamiro's aggression of late as well, but I will be honest that it was only the fact Rilia was a PC that prevented him from physically PVP'ing. There was a good deal of thread time where I felt like you, Rilia, were simply trying to push the bounds with him in goading, even after the time spent in character burying the hatchet, you jumped right back into it.

It feels to me your using your characters status as PC to goad without repercussion as PvP is not allowed, and with Tamiro being easily goaded as hes a hot head, I got tired of my character getting the blame for it all.

they/them pronouns

Okay, let's start with one big thing I see coming up.

Some of these things are being brought up for the first time. Please give people the opportunity to change their behavior first. Rilia has been willing to work with people in the past. When Nel asked Rilia to dial back the sexualized comments directed at Nel, she did and has been directing them at NPCs instead. I was under the impression that we had reached an understanding. From my point of view, she is not in the wrong.

Likewise, she is not the sole person responsible for making this work. Everyone needs to bring up concerns out of character when you have them. Unlike face-to-face games, we don't have body language to tell when someone's going over the line or when in-character tension is making people legitimately upset. Otherwise, no one can make changes. You are, of course, allowed to have whatever feelings when it comes to the game, but you can't blame someone for not reading your mind.

I know that I should've better guided the introduction of new players. This is something that I consistently struggle with and I really botched it up on all ends this time. I'm sorry and my goal is to learn from it. I should've told people to dial it down when it was preventing people from feeling like they're part of the group.

I want to reach an agreement where everyone can play together and everyone feels like they belong. Let's come up with some better guidelines, particularly around in-character conflict. I need your input on what is/isn't good for you. If we can't come to an agreement, then we'll talk about the long-term track of the game and where to go next.

Well, as I mentioned, the start was tough, but I'm fine with where we are and where we're headed. I totally understand the 'old timers' feeling the 'new folks' were a threat in-character. It was good role-play, just difficult at the time to get involved. But that has lessened with time, as I hoped it would organically.

So count me as overall happy. I'm not conflicted, and I don't think I'm causing anyone anyone grief.

I think communicating like this is good once in a while - particularly in PbP. In many of my games, I chat with the other players and/or DM somewhat regularly out of game, but I don't know most of you here. Feel free to PM me for my gmail address for chatting purposes if you like. Meeting new people is part of what gaming can do. :)

Anyway, I'll be quiet now and let the rest of you sort out your differences, though I suspect that just airing all our dirty laundry will improve the game for everyone. Seems like we're all mature here, so a few adjustments and everyone should be more happy. A little conflict is good after all - it juices role play - as long as it's not too heavy...

I'm simply asking Rilia to reduce, not eliminate the hyper sexuality of her character. I'm fine with innuendos, and some language, but pulling out "suggestive" wands, and bits and bridles with manacles, is usually a step outside my comfort zone. Manacles makes sense, it lets us visualize what we will, without the bits and bridles forcing the image.

I'm also overall happy with the game and no worries regarding the rocky IC start that Aishe and Gillian had; it made sense to me as a player and as Aishe has said, the tension has reduced over time as a natural progression of the game. I'll also make the same offer to chat outside of the game; there are a few from the forums that I already chat with on Google Hangouts and one or two that I'm FB friends with so it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary for me :)

This is more 'for the record' than anything, but I'll say that while I'm generally fine with mildly suggestive flirting/innuendo and in-game romance I'd rather it not be too crude and I prefer a simple 'fade-to-black' if/when something happens. However I'm willing to adjust to match what the group as a whole is comfortable with.
