Emi is more than ready to go by the time the others walk in. She gets up and meets them half-way.

"Shall we go deal with our drunken guest?"

"Yeah," Kayleigh agrees. "I hope Regeris hasn't had to smack some sense into the fellow. I doubt it--Grau seemed likely to sleep for quite a while by the looks of him."

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

At the temple, Regeris sits vigil over a slumbering, manacled Grau. When the group reassembles there and he's woken he's pretty well hung over, still half drunk really, and not exactly well-spoken. He stares despondently at his wrists, bound in his own manacles.

"I'm afraid I must have acted the idiot. I don't remember deciding to come here, but I suspect that even in the depths of my drunk my conscience was pushing me to do what I know is right. I think I must have resolved to warn you of the danger you're in, and got drunk along the way."

His manacled hands caress his temples as he continues.

"The guard in Old Korvosa's gone bad. Verik and his little cabal of goons pushes the rest of the guard into acts that are on the wrong side of the law. He's not dumb enough to run his gang-racket out of the guardhouse - most of the boys aren't that far gone and wouldn't stand for such. But I know he's running a protection racket out of that old butcher's shop - All the World's Meats. He's taking his contracts there, and only using the rest of us for the more legitimate side of his strong-man gig. Enforcing his will on citizens using the guard and a set of trumped-up charges."

"The darker side of the whole thing is at that butcher's shop. I don't know the details, but I have a good sense of smell, and I smell something foul going on there."

"His latest orders are to organize a raid on this place. It was the last straw for me, and I know most of the boys at the guardhouse feel the same. I'm not sure he has enough clout left to push them into coming here. Alot of them have already deserted their posts and left to see to their own families, and this last set of orders may drive the rest of them away."

"Hells, maybe that's his game anyway. To finally push us to either quit or join his racket for good and all. I don't know what evidence he has, but his claim is that you folks and the priests here were responsible for the fire at Execrables the other night."

I believe Regeris insisted that Kayleigh NOT manacle Grau, as he's technically still a member in good standing of the Korvosan Guard.

"Who gives Verik his orders?" Kayleigh demands rather angrily. "Pilts Swastel, perhaps?"

"And are you talking about the show at Execrables wherein members of the guard were overseeing the murder of a kidnapped man for the entertainment of the immoral masses?!"

None of you have ever seen Kayleigh this incensed.

Regeris would have unshackled Grau once left with him.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

Regeris stands back, listening to Grau intently before offering him a waterskin. He places a hand firmly on Kayleigh's shoulder.

"This only clarifies what we have to do next. Remember that none here are the enemy, Kayleigh. Those who must be punished shall be."

He squats down by Grau, looking at the hungover guard carefully.

"We are going to take Verik down. Tell us everything you know about him."

While Regeris and Kayleigh are talking to Grau, Emileva finds something to lean against off to the side and waits. She does have a couple of questions but she doesn't want to pile too many things on the man at once and turn their conversation into an interrogation.

Once they have finished speaking Emi adds three questions.

"The raid you mentioned, is it set to happen at any particular day or time you know of?"

"Does Verik have a second? If we got to Verik when he was alone, or as close to that as possible, and took him down, do you think his racket would continue under a new leader or fall apart?"

"The members of the guard who have left, if they could do their jobs without being under Verik's thumb, would they come back?"

Of course if any of these subjects are covered before Emi asks, just strike that question out.

Kayleigh swallows her righteous fury at Regeris's request.

"Will Baldrago be with Vancaskerkin?" Kayleigh asks Grau. Just in case her new friends need reminding, she explains, "He's the bastard who took his sledge hammer to Amistan's head. He's dangerous...and probably not worth showing any mercy towards."

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

Who gives Verik his orders?

"Back before this chaos started? Cressida gave orders directly to Verik as he's captain of the guard in Old Dock. Same as the other districts of the city. Who does he take his orders from now? No one, I'd guess. Can't imagine why Pilts would have any sway over him besides the influence that comes with money."

Reference to the Peddler of Lies

"No idea. There's always been rumors that some of Pilts illusions were more than illusions. That some of his actors - and especially actresses weren't disappearing because they found better employment, but that he'd done something to them or with them. Never made much sense to me personally, but Pilts's shows have never really been my thing."

Information on Verik

"Before the chaos he was just another boss. Popular with the ladies, at least if you believe his bawdy. His most recent lie was that he'd bedded Meliya Arkona - more than once! My hairy arse."

"Since the death of the King he's grown more distant - more committed to a ring of guards long known for their sadistic streak. And more absent from the guardhouse - which is almost deserted these days."

"I think he's originally from Riddleport, and I recall him speaking once or twice of his brothers. But we've never been friends."

Timing of the Raid

"Hells, I don't even know if it will happen. I decided I wanted no part in it and left. I suspect the rest of the guard falls somewhere in between my position and resignation. I bet more deserted. I don't know - I'd need to go back and talk to them. Maybe I can reason with what's left of them - recall them to their duty. But when your lawful commander gives an order... well, you can't blame some of them for falling in line."

Verik's second

"Our command structure is pretty flat. No formal second. Would some of his inner ring continue without him? If he was exposed as a criminal? I suspect they'd flee into the city and find some other way to prey on the weak. They're sadists, drunk on their own authority. If Cressida has tasked you with taking them down then their gig is up, right? I assume she'd appoint a new captain and maybe we could go back to helping set the city right."

"Most of our boys ain't bad."

Would the guard in Old Dock reconstitute?

"Yes, I believe they would. Given the right leader."

Baldrago

"Mmm. He's the worst and always has been. Him and Parns, Karallo and Malder. They're the worst of us and they've all taken to operating that old butcher's shop. They've taken to calling themselves the Cowhammer Boys. They're butchers alright, and Verik's close association with that bunch is point of evidence number one that he's gone all bad."

Throughout the questioning you can detect no bluff or even reserve in Grau's answers. You get the feeling that when not languishing at the bottom of a bottle, he might not be a bad guy.

"Agreed, straight through the door as fast as we can go. Unless they're already all together in one place, we may be able to overwhelm them piecemeal before they can group up. We already know who, where, and why. There shouldn't be anything to slow down and chat about."

Tale of Days Current Battlemap City Map

There is indeed an encoded journal you haven't really examined that was taken from Gaedran Lamm's room.

Grau considers for a moment before answering.

"I can fight. But I think I might rather return to the guardhouse and try and rally my mates back to their duty - and forestall any possibility that they're going to follow orders and come after this place."

Kayleigh's knowledge check reveals nothing but the common assumption that Meliya Arkona is a member of the famously rich Arkona family.

Is the group ready to go to the butcher's shop?

A quick flip through the pages of the journal confirm that the parts of it are written in plain Varisian, and parts of it are written in some kind of word jumble. After looking through it for awhile and comparing pages you start to get a sense of how it might unravel, but it's going to take an hour or two to complete a key and make a translation.

And a successful Linguistics check when you decide to invest that time, DC 15.

You part ways with Grau at the doors of the temple. He leaves you easy directions to the butcher shop, which sits on the northern edge of the district. By the time you make your way through the streets to the place the sun is starting to sit low in the sky and the day's crowds are gradually diminishing. Passersby give you a wide berth, cutting curious looks in your direction and remarking to one another.

When you find it, the shop has closed its doors but there are lights in the long front window where a case sits. The case contains nothing but brown stains and flies, apparently the days cuts have already been sold or handed out. There's a single shop door in the front, but snooping around the place you also find a fenced yard with a rickety double gate in the back. The building has a partial second story with windows in all four walls and these also sport lights.

Somebody's home.

"I haven't fought with the rest of you before, however... we're going here to put an end to Verik's racket. This will almost certainly mean deaths. If you can subdue the enemy without putting yourself at risk, do so. If it is kill or be killed, do not hesitate. And if the enemy asks for mercy, I expect we shall grant it unless in exceptional circumstances."

Regeris ignores the crowd, going over battle plans and various scenarios in his mind as he approaches the butcher shop. Once the building has been scouted out, he looks to the group.

"My instincts will always say take the less-used entrance, but I will defer to what the rest of you prefer. I am an archer so will largely fight from the rear."

Female Human Slayer (Vanguard) 8 | HP: 34/83 | AC: 23 (T: 13, F: 20) | CMB: +12, CMD: 24 | F: +9, R: +8, W: +5 | Init: +6 | Perc: +11, SM: +10 | Speed 20'

If the 2nd floor is partial, does that mean it is over either the front or the back door but not the other? The post below assumes that's the case. If not disregard it.

After the building has been circled, Emileva adds her opinion.

"I think we should avoid going in under the second floor. It makes any noise more likely to be heard since it could pass through either walls or ceiling. Let's work our way through the single story portion, then take the two-story part last."

"As for the nature of the fights to come, I'm for whatever is fast and decisive. From what Grau said we should expect somewhere between five and seven of them, but there could be more. Dead, alive, surrendered, I'm not bothered with how it's done as long as it's ended as fast as possible. No dithering with parleys or negotiation. We use overwhelming force from the moment of contact and they can decide how they want to lose."

The second story is over the front-side of the building. Directly over the front door.

A mean dirt path leads off the street and between the buildings. The fence and gate is a sad, dilapidated affair, loosely secured by a rusty chain and a dilapidated padlock. From beyond the gate you catch the overwhelming aroma of pigshit.

Yes, listening at the gate you do pick up the muted sounds of livestock. Piggish grunts and the occasional bass of a cow or bull.

Regeris makes short work of the simple lock and the chain falls away. You have to lift up on the gate to get it to swing your way as its foot is buried in the mud.

Cracking the gate just a little, you find a dirt yard on the other side. An old two-wheeled cart sits disused in one corner. Two simple gates to the left lead into another muddy yard that's the source of the smell and the farm sounds. Gazing through the slats in those gates you can see a grime covered pig and a skinny cow milling about in the mud beyond.

Directly ahead of you (7,2-3) is a double door leading into the building itself. Light leaks from under the door and you hear human voices coming from the other side.

A tactical map is up. I took the liberty of adding Emi and Nebbin as the first through the gate. If you hunt around on the Old Korvosa map you can find a link to the butcher shop map as well, but it's tiny, so it will take some persistence :)

The door is unlocked. Emileva throws the latch and rushes 10' into a large room that makes up the entire back-half of the building.

Th floor of this grim chamber is strewn with blood-stained straw and the reek of slaughter is almost overpowering. The room is a killing floor. Meat hooks dangle from a metal track affixed to the ceiling that allows the hooks and their gory loads to be moved easily about the room, though all of these are presently empty.

Two large vats sit in the center of the room. Under the rightmost vat is a fire-pit and the small blaze burning there makes the room uncomfortably hot. Steam rises out of this vat as the water within boils gently. A blood-stained grating next to the fire-pit covers a wide hole in the floor. Two butcher blocks stand beyond the vats, and an aproned man stands at each of these, long knives and whetstones in hand. They pause in their whetting, mouths open in surprise as the back door bursts in.

To the left, near doors that lead further into the structure stands a third man. This brute spins at the intrusion, his hand reaching for the handle of a huge blood-stained sledge that leans in the corner.

Kayleigh's head swims with rage at the sight of the hammer. Her vision blurs as the Demon's lanterns appear over the heads of her adversaries, casting the features of their faces in garish nightmare.

Kayleigh's Harrow reading kicks in during fights against the Korvosan guard. +2 to Dex-based rolls and +1 dodge bonus to AC for our fine young cleric.

Combat! (EDIT) The party gets half-actions in the surprise round. The bad guys get to stand there and act surprised.

Emi moves forward to prevent the men behind the vats from approaching those in the rear without coming past her. She takes a guarded stance with her sword ready. 15' to the right should do it, 12,2.

Well, it can't hurt to try.

In a voice loud enough to be heard by the men she says "We've come for Verik Vancaskerkin in the name of the Korvosan Guard. Stand down and surrender your weapons."

Shall we assume that Kayleigh's casting of shield of faith on Nebbin took place during the surprise round? If so, Round 1 actions below!

After buffing Nebbin for the coming battle, Kayleigh almost swoons as the Demon's Lantern again manifests and the three men present seem to morph into partial demons to the cleric's eyes. Although a part of her lauds Emileva for offering the men a chance to surrender, she spies Baldrago reaching for his murderous sledge hammer. At the sight of that weapon, the aproned men go from animal butchers to the butchers who slaughtered the kindly Amistan. In the haze of a bloodlust the likes of which she's never felt, Kayleigh enters the slaughterhouse, makes a beeline for the nearest opponent, and swings her morningstar low, trying to shatter a kneecap.

20-ft. move action to 5,8; attack guard #3.

morningstar: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18 for bludgeoning, piercing damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

As the others move, Nebbin rushes forward, sword swinging in a mighty arc toward the brute.

Agreed, Kayleigh's stated action is queued behind Tassira's impending post.

Kayleigh's channeled protection creates a shimmering magical shield around Nebbin as he charges into the fray.

Emileva's answer comes from the big man by the hammer - presumably Baldrago. "We are the guard little b&*&%! If you've come after Verik, you'll have to go through us to get him."

Regeris's arrow thuds into the side of the vat. The butcher he targeted gains cover as the vat is more than half his height.

Nebbin's powerful cut nearly makes Baldrago immediately regret his words. Though he tries to avoid the blow, the tip of the greatsword penetrates the guard's armor and draws blood and an admiring grunt from the big man.

The butcher closest to the wall calls out an alarm loud enough for the neighbors to hear. "We're under attack back here! Intruders on the killin' floor!.

Tassira gets a single action for the surprise round, and then a full round 1 action before I resolve Kayleigh's and move on to the butchers.

Tassira's blast narrowly misses its mark.

Kayleigh's intended square is taken by Nebbin, so I improvised.

Kayleigh strides into combat and takes advantage of Baldrago's focus on Nebbin to lay the big man low. Her morningstar lands with a satisfying crack and the villain's knee explodes. He crumples into a ball of pain on the floor and passes out, adding large amounts of his own blood to the matted straw.

The butcher-guards drop their knives and draw longswords as they close with Emileva. Both of their tentative efforts are easily turned aside, however.

From deeper in the building you hear the alarm repeated. You have the sense that more enemies are on their way.

Emi's up. Map is updated.

Emileva stands her ground, studying her opponents as they approach. Both of their attacks are easily parried, but so is her own.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 1 = 8

Move action: Studied Target on #1, standard action to attack

HP 92, +13 CMB, CMD 26, +2 Init, +9 Perception, AC 20/13T/17FF (-2 when raging), +10 Fort, +6 Ref, +3/+5 Will Human barbarian 8

OK, Baldrago was easier than I was expecting.

Wincing despite himself as he sees his foe's blood splatter, Nebbin rushes to help Emileva. His grip slips though slightly as he swings, and he ends up trying to club the man, using the flat of his blade.

Move to 3-12, just north of Emi; attack No. 2
Greatsword, power attack: 1d20 + 6 - 1 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 6 - 1 - 4 = 15

My posting window for today is closing, so I'm going to post Kayleigh's next actions now to keep things moving.

Kayleigh notes Nebbin moving to support Emileva and nods in support. Then a fey spirit takes her and she moves deeper into the killing room, positioning herself near one of the doors, readying an attack if anyone comes through.

Move action to 10,8; readied action to attack anyone coming through.
