I think I'm going to stick with separate discussion threads...looks like it will be easier to switch back and forth between the game-play tab and discussion tab if I don't connect the thread to "EXILES OF WINTER"
Jawhar |
Welcome back, everyone! Looks like we get to escape Irrisen!
I know nothing about the Mammoth Lands though.
Torvald Stonecask |
Think a little Conan plus a heaping helping of The Land that Time Forgot! So you've got your rugged barbarians and their mighty mammoths, but also there are valleys fed by volcanic hot springs where dinosaurs still kick it. Also there's demons from the Worldwound further east!
Craggark |
You apparently think Bam-Bam had a “special” relationship with much older women, or a serious Electra complex.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
Why do I get the feeling Jamir is going to end up as Barney?
Jawhar |
I am pretty sure I am Dino, so you're a step up.
Regardless, Barney was clearly the hero of the story, so you shouldn't be offended by that comparison.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
Lia -You took a level of sorcerer? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a sorcerer/wizard before (other than arcanists), but it looks like an amazing blaster build. Where do you plan to go with her - mostly wizard, mostly sorcerer, something else altogether? And what’s a twilight speaker?
Edit: also, got my profile updated, but I may tinker with equipment and such before we get going.

Jamir brings up an interesting point. I know most of you have already sent me your updated herolab portfolios; however it would be immensely helpful if you could all do it again ( Torvald you're the exception and I still think I have your info you already sent).
Other than sending me an updated portfolio I don't need anything else from you guys ( i.e. Inventory tracking sheets unnecessary). However, I think it would be useful for me and kinda fun for everyone, to use this thread to list the two or three biggest changes about your character since we ended Exiles. ( talking mostly mechanics here since you all leveled or in Torvald's case gained 2 levels. However if there is an interesting "flavor" change; please feel free to share that as well) I just want the get a feel for your guys new powers.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
I don't think I have sent mine yet. I'll get that out and post a quick update later today.
Torvald Stonecask |
The only significant changes for me are (in order of importance)
1. Precise Bombs. No longer will Torvald be knocking Craggark unconscious with splash damage! Melee-types everywhere rejoice!
2. Extra bomb damage. Now rolling 2d6 so extra hurt on the bad guys.
3. Switched to Trap Breaker archetype, so I now have Trapfinding and a small bonus on Perception/Disable Device that applies only to traps.
4. Handy Haversack! Ditched the backpack that was making me overburdened and have a bunch of space left over if you need me to carry something for you!
Craggark |
Pardon me for painting you into my scene a little bit, Torvald. We were roomies, after all.
No huge changes for Craggark. I took a 2nd level in Brawler, which unlocks two-weapon fighting with fists. I took Dirty Fighting as my bonus feat, and I polished up some of my skills and gained a new one...
I tried to gather up enough gold to get a mithral shirt, but I'm just shy. After next scenario, I guess. I stocked back up on alchemist's fire. Also, Torvald, I deleted the blackfire clay that I was carrying for you; I think that was specific to a scenario and not actually purchased by us. Is that correct?
Torvald Stonecask |
There was scenario clay, and also some that I made, but I have the latter listed so no worries.
Jawhar |
My only real change was to invest in Mwk Agile Breastplate and Mwk Buckler so that I can do things with my off hand and won't find myself stuck at the bottom of a pit again (hopefully).
I didn't change any traits, feats, etc. You do remind me that I want to update my backstory to include some of what has happenned along the way.
Character outlook is a bit different after having played the hero for a couple of scenarios and having earned some redemption for previous mistakes.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
Major updates to Jamir: with the chronicle from Snows of Summer, he is now level 3, all in Swashbuckler. His 3rd level feat is Fencing Grace, so that he adds his Dex bonus to damage with his rapier (finally!). He can add his Charisma bonus to saving throws 3/day, and as precision damage with swashbuckler weapons as long as he has one prestige point. He has a couple of new deeds as well, and as the final change under the rebuild rules, I swapped the tactician trait (which I could never remember to use) with dangerously curious, to get UMD as a class skill.
The most significant new ability, however, comes from a boon on the Snows of Summer chronicle sheet:
Mantle of the Black Rider (Assuming the Mantle): You have accepted the Mantle of the Black Rider, which grants you considerable power in your quest to find Baba Yaga so long as you continue your quest. Choose one ability score (Charisma). Once per day as a swift action you may gain a +1 bonus to that ability score for 1 minute. For every additional Mantle of the Black Rider boon that you have for this character, the bonus increases by +1. You may not benefit from more than one Mantle of the Black Rider boon at a time. (From Snows of Summer chronicle sheet, AP #67)
I chose Charisma instead of Dexterity because Jamir has a 17 in each, but because he will add a point to Dex at level 4, a +1 wouldn't add anything to his modifier after that. The extra point to Charisma will give him a temporary extra point of panache, plus increase his Charisma-based bonuses, and he won't add a point to Charisma until level 8, by which time he may have gotten the next Reign of Winter chronicle and the bonus from the Mantle will be +2.
And yes, he now has a mithril chain shirt, as well as additional skill points added to climb and acrobatics. Torvald, I may take you up on the extra space in your Handy Haversack; otherwise, Jamir will just sell or abandon his extra gear.
Torvald Stonecask |
Sure Jamir, I have plenty of space.
Are we *sure* we don't want a bomb that needs a siege engine to launch it?

So everyone, I was looking (briefly) at everyone's character and it dawned on me...this is a season 2 scenario...it was designed for 4 players not 6! Right now your APL is 2.5 so by PFS raw you must play the lower tier..(cause you only have 5 players) but if you guys want to recruit one more player you could choose to play higher tier..( would need to be lv. 3-5th character)
If your interested you should discuss it and if 4 out 5 want to play higher we'll recruit a 6th...if even two dissent we'll play low..
pro's: over 700gp extra and a couple extra cool items on the chronicle sheet..
con's: end encounter is a CR:7 and there's a tough DC for a certain save in a separate encounter.
GM's thoughts: If you guys recruit another player I think you'll not only survive but thrive..there are a couple tough encounters but your characters are pretty optimized and work well as a team. Having said that, the roll-play is exactly the same in both tiers so you'll get the same experience either way...(just more loot in the higher tier)..
You'll have a few days to discuss it..
lucklesshero |
He has a couple of new deeds as well, and as the final change under the rebuild rules, I swapped the tactician trait (which I could never remember to use) with dangerously curious, to get UMD as a class skill.
Jamir if you send me a pdf of the Exiles of winter chronicle sheet and note the rebuild from tactician to dangerously curious ...I'll I'll initial right next to to the rebuild..and send the pdf back to you...(just in case you have a future GM who cares about such things)
If that's too much a hassle.. I suggest you note it on the chronicle and put, "approved by GM Justin Shuttleworth" next to the change. If a future GM has a problem you can always refer him to this thread..
Jawhar |
I would not object to another known player, but I am also fine playing at the lower tier.
I'll think about a couple of people I have played with. I can think of two off the top of my head that might be a good fit, if they have a character in range.
I recruited the last addition, though, so more than willing to let someone else bring their friends in.
Torvald Stonecask |
I would be quite happy if we recruit another player and try the higher-end tier, but weight my opinion less that the players with lower-level characters. I'd hate to get someone killed!

Playing up sounds good to me, but like Torvald, Jamir is already 3rd level - I don't want to cause any problems for the PCs at level 2.

Ok that's 4 out of 5...in favor of playing up...unless Ana has a strenuous objection; I suggest you guys do a little preliminary PMing to a player or two, you might feel fits this group's dynamic ...If you have more than one prospect we can always hold a lottery.. I leave the recruiting to you guys and am fine with whoever you choose..(even if they don't use herolab)
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
For what it's worth, I am not traveling over Thanksgiving weekend (for those of you outside the U.S., that's the next 4 or 5 days, depending on whether you are taking today off). Other than Thursday afternoon and evening, I am likely to be able to post more frequently than usual.
Jawhar |
I have one possible player.
He has a couple of characters who are or soon will be lvl 3, but none who are immediately available. He said a couple of weeks.
He also has a lvl 5.2 ranger who will be available in a few days. Not sure if that is too high or just right since the final battle will be difficult.
There is a link on my profile for House of Harmonious Wisdom, if you'd like a sample of his play style. He played Mythryndyr.
lucklesshero |
I think throwing a couple others into the mix might be helpful for you guys. But, if you just want to save time and go with this guy that's fine with me. As i mentioned I'll let you guys decide who you want..his 5.2 is within the tier you'll be playing so there's no legality issue there. I think most the other players may want to start sooner rather than later..
I'd throw another player or two out there for consideration...but, I'll go with however you guys land on.
Torvald Stonecask |
I'd be open to seeing lucklesshero's people, I'd like to start sooner than later but Lvl2-3 to Lvl5 is a big jump and I'd prefer not to run the risk that we all end up as sidekicks.
Jawhar |
Luckless was suggesting that the rest of you should make some suggestions as well, I think. :)
BTW: He updated that he thinks one of the 3rd level characters might be available this weekend depending on how much the game is slowed by the holidays.
Regardless, I'd like others to suggest good players as well. :)
Torvald Stonecask |
Same, the people I gamed with in Germany don't do PBP
lucklesshero |
FYI guys...I will be running PFS# 3-18 in CORE at the same time I'm running this one. I finally feel up to running two games at once.
So if you've never played God's Market Gamble. Or have played it in classic but would like to give it another shot...
I'm recruiting Here you should jump in the lottery..(held on 11/30).
btw if you don't have a CORE player it's np tier 1-2..just make a new one!
lucklesshero |
Just a couple things b4 we start...
1. I'll be posting a continuation of Exiles/Keep role-play tomorrow to kick things off.
2. I'll give you guys till Friday Dec. 1st to recruit another player if you still want to play high tier. If no one is available/suitable after Friday we'll just play low. ( ie. it will be all roll-play this week)
3. Rules are pretty much the same as always..with two exceptions..
A. I'll be making passive perception checks for all your character's as soon as you enter a room/area..If you make an active perception check (ie. look for traps, inspect a body closely, ect..), please keep in mind it's a move action and then you can roll your own perception.
B. Attacks of opportunity: If you don't want me to roll them for you: you'll need to roll a set of 8 or 10 naked D20 rolls in the game play thread under a spoiler B4 next Friday. I will then roll a D10 or D8 eliminating one of the rolls..(I'll draw a line through it so you know that roll is no longer viable) Each time your character has an opportunity to for an AoO...I will roll randomly from the set of rolls you provided. Failure to provide a set of pre-rolled D20's for AoO, means player accepts that GM will roll his AoO's for him/her.
Looking forward to starting up!
Craggark |

1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I just posted the following on Jamir's profile page. I'm adding them here for easy reference.
I am posting the following after re-reading HMM's BOT BUDDY'S GUIDE TO PLAY-BY-POST CHARACTER BOTTING (it is document 4 in her PbP GM Kit folder).
Passive rolls
I am happy to have the GM roll Jamir's initiative and passive perception checks, without any need to wait. I assume that all botted rolls (passive or active) will be posted on the Gameplay thread under a spoiler.
I had originally thought I would also welcome botting of my saving throws, but now that Jamir has the Charmed Life swashbuckler ability 3/day (before rolling a saving throw, Jamir can decide to add his charisma bonus to it), I want to be able to make that decision. Of course, if it is a saving throw that would already be made in secret, that is a different issue.
Active rolls and decisions
If Jamir is in melee and his opponent provokes an attack of opportunity, Jamir is going to take it, and he is going to take it with his rapier if that is what is in his hand. Go ahead and run the AoO without waiting for me to post. The BBCode for his most common attacks, skill checks, and saving throws, before any uncommon situational modifiers, are posted below.
For other active rolls, checks, and decisions, I prefer to make the rolls myself. On weekdays, I usually check the boards and post before 9am and after 7pm Central time (UTC -06:00), and if I'm having a slow day at work, I may be able to post in the middle of the day. However, If I'm holding up the game and a simple skill check would allow the party to move forward, then go ahead and make the roll. I would prefer not to be botted in a way that uses consumables other than inexpensive ammunition (e.g., arrows), or requires any other real decision-making, unless I am away from the forum for a day or more, or by prearrangement (exception: see Using Panache, below).
If there is a group decision to be made (left or right? Go into the next room or stay here?), feel free to assume I tag along with the group in the standard marching order once 2-3 other PCs have agreed on what to do, especially if it has been a while and is holding up the game or if the alternative would be to assume that Jamir stays behind while the rest of the party moves on.
Using Panache
Unless I say otherwise, Jamir will always use his class abilities when he can, burning panache when it is available, unless he is on his last panache point. Please do not use his last panache point in an automatic or botted action; there are abilities Jamir can use that don't cost panache but require him to have at least one point remaining.
When Jamir has more than one point of panache remaining:
- if Jamir's opponent attacks him and misses, Jamir will use his Underfoot Assault as an immediate action.
- If Jamir's opponent hits but it's a close thing (i.e., if it would be a miss if Jamir's AC had been 3 higher), Jamir will use his Dodging Panache ability to avoid the blow, regardless of the amount of damage done by the hit.
Neither of these deeds ability requires a roll, so knowing that Jamir will use the abilities whenever possible (unless it would use his last panache point) should speed up the game. I would prefer, however, that you leave the flavor of Jamir's panache actions for me to write up when I next post.

I just posted the following on Jamir's profile page. I'm adding them here for easy reference.
** spoiler omitted **...
Really love the "bot me guidelines" think I'll adapt something like this for my own characters.
lucklesshero |
Guys posted "setting the scene" a day early. I probably won't post again till Monday ( Rognvald and Uliyara's opening statement) But I may do it tomorrow. No need open conversation in the game-play thread (unless it's just small talk). Wait for the briefing before, you throw any meaty/purposeful questions or statements towards the NPCs.
Lastly if you do still manage to recruit another PC don't worry about him not being with you here. I'll work him in whilst you guys travel toward your destination.
Jawhar |
Anyone else have suggestions for a player? If people object to the guy I found for any reason, I won't be offended. Nobody else has made any suggestions though.
Jamir "Hamstring" Montajay |
No objections - I thought I would reach out to the folks in my arcanist’s game this weekend but didn’t get to it. You actually did the work, Jawhar, so if your guy is good to go (and understands how fast-paced this game can get), he looked fine to me. If you are interested in other options, take a look at Kulga and Brayne in Champion's Chalice - ignore Bokkah, her player just dropped out without explanation in the middle of part 2, and I can ask if they’re interested.
Jawhar |
Either of those players seem fine with me. I have no objections if you want to see if either has an available character. Like I said, I am more than willing for anyone else to get their friends into the game.
Just for reference, Mythryndyr is now available. He is a level 3 Rogue (Sniper).
lucklesshero |
Ok let me know by Friday who you guys choose. Sorry for the short post tonight but feel free to interact.
lucklesshero |
Jawhar please contact Mythryndyr..and let him know he's in. He can dot the discussion board now and I'm hoping to integrate him by Friday. Please have him dot our discussion a.s.a.p. so i can take a quick look at his character...thx
