Sense Motive: is Brokav lying?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25

The below assumes that Idris detects no duplicity in her rival.

Idris glances at Brokav, noting he would be vulnerable to an attack from her at this point -- but given the circumstances, this would be a dangerous choice. Idris forces her anger to redirect to the intruders, who dared interfere with the honorable contest between her and the Count.

Kivan was pretty harsh with the guys beside them, although she suspected they were up to something they had bigger things to worry about, so she tried to talk with the now blind men, asking them to stay out of this. "They are assassins, fool! Step back and stay away from this, if you are not an enemy. Everything will be explained later!"

yes you can, and I'll say it's a free action to talk to the blinded men while you do something else. I'm going to have the NPCs go for the sake of keeping things moving but you still have a turn for this round. You will effectively have two rounds' worth of actions next time you post.

Idris detects no duplicity in Brokav's voice, and indeed some of the attackers move to engage the Master of Initiates. In a brief moment, both duelists are in the thick of the fight and putting their Aldori training to good use.

Using your spoilered rolls for your readied attacks, roll further attacks as you make them. I will assume that you would use power attack against these newcomers, as you're concerned with killing them and not merely scoring the first blow. I will further assume you'll take opportunity attacks to do unarmed damage. If you would do otherwise let me know and we'll retcon.

tidying up rolls:

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19

Idris unarmed AoO: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Idris damage: 1d6 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 4 = 13

Idris lashes out one-handed with her blade at the first intruder within reach, scoring a hit down his side. You feel your blade scrape against mail armor before finding softer flesh below, and the side of his tunic darkens. The man's blow is predictable and basic - he's clearly not trained in the esoteric ways of your schools. You sidestep neatly and deal him a punishing punch in the shoulder as he turns to face you. Hot on his heels are two more assailants, and you are hard-pressed to parry both blows directed at you but escape from harm.

In the corner of the ring, Brokav and two more attackers exchange sword blows, steel ringing as blades meet and throw sparks.

The three blinded men try fruitlessly to wipe the glitter from their eyes, not realizing their handicap is magically imposed. "Cor, all I see is fireworks!" laments one. They don't run, but neither do they attack or go for their swords.

party up!

Since she did what she could about those three, she went to help Idris to get rid of her fans. Pretty moved while drawing two daggers, then attacked the flanked assailant once!

She keeps striking him next round, or moves to flank the next one if the first is dead, and attacks it.

Yes indeed. Idris will use power attack when going for a kill, and take unarmed strikes whenever possible. Combat reflexes will need to be taken soon; I'm missing out on AoOs here!

Idris's bare fists appear to be made out of shining metal as she smashes them into the face of her attacker.

"Ha! These spectators expected a duel, but we'll give them a pitched battle exhibition, that we will! HA! DEATH AND DESTRUCTION!"

I'm going to guess Pretty's attack probably killed the one she and I were flanking, or that Milo's arrow finished it off. If not, no 5-ft-step and attack that one again.

Idris steps closer to Brokav, rivalry on hold for a moment as she helps protect his flank. Can't kill him myself if he gets killed here, she might think if she was concerned with anything but the wild battle-lust with which she is consumed.

Attacking the one flanked with Nix:

attack, power attack, bless, flank: 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 12 - 2 + 1 + 2 = 21
That probably won't hit, even with a flank.
damage: 1d8 + 4 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 6 = 13

I won't use a sense motive check to dodge the next attack, since I want to use the immediate action to make a second unarmed strike if the first hits.

unarmed strike AoO if an attack misses Idris, with power attack and bless: 1d20 + 11 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 11 - 2 + 1 = 13 +2 if the person is flanked with Nix or Pretty

Ah! Been a while since I read through the whole spell, I've been eyeing it for swapping out at level up but it's hard to part with. Finally got around to writing up some personalities, thought we ought to have some roguish types in our cast of refugees! Not to mention some upstanding citizens who have misjudged them in the past.

Refugees of Westwind at Desna’s House

Seraphina's eye was drawn to a pair of Westwinders who appeared to have placed themselves on the fringe of the group. They looked to be little more than teenagers and their manner was so similar that she might have thought them related, if not for the disparity in their heritage. The boy was tall, and lanky, his limbs still gangling with the awkwardness of youth. His skin had a grayish pallor that gave him an unhealthy look, especially in contrast to his dark black hair, but on closer examination, it was simply his coloring. The two pointed canines jutting through his lips from his lower jaw told his story of orcish blood, but by the look of him, she suspected he was only one quarter orc at most. If not for his odd coloring and exaggerated teeth, he would have easily passed for fully human. The girl, however, was as fair as any maiden Sera had ever seen. Her angular features and pointed ears peeking through her light blonde hair marked her as a half-elf. She had a hard look about her, but even road worn and smudged with dirt, her beauty shone through. She was clearly the elder of the two, but the boy loomed over her protectively, even stepping to intercept Seraphina and her friends as they drew near. He was calm and watchful, but the message was familiar and very clear, 'to get to her, you must go through me.'

She learned their names were Jarek and Vivian, and they had long relied on one another. The people of Westwind were a goodly sort, and living so close to the worldwound had given them a focused perspective on good and evil, but still these two had grown up without a sense of true belonging. They were evasive when asked what they did in Westwind, saying that they 'kept busy' and did 'this an' tha'. It was a middle-aged gent that finally spoke up over them that told their story for all to hear.

"They're crafty as cutpurses and sneaky as slips, that pair! Always looking outta tha corner of their eyes and skulking about like thieves." He gave them both a glare that held a list of old grievances as long as his arm, but the malice drained out of him as quickly as water from a sieve and his voice hitched with a strange sort of sorrowful gratitude. "And if it weren't for them, a score of us would not have made it out. We were hold up in our basement store-room with our neighbors when they found us. The hordes were coming fast and we knew we could not outrun them. We thought we could barricade in and last until help came. Vivian convinced us we would perish if we stayed and together they guided us out. We passed so close to the demons, we could smell them. But we stayed upwind and stuck to the shadows and by the goddess, they brought us to where our people gathered. They did not have to help us, m'Lady, they risked themselves in the doing and it were not an easy task to get us through. They've earned their place among us, I'll take my oath on it." He nodded briskly and wrapped his arm around the shoulders of a younger woman by his side with the same hazel eyes, likely his daughter.

Jarek shifted uncomfortably, seemingly embarrassed by the attention, but Vivian took his hand and smiled at the fellow, puffing out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Ernest. We were glad to be of use."

The three blinded thugs continue to hold their position, pawing at their eyes in a futile attempt to rub away the irritating motes of dazzling light.

Pretty deftly slips behind the nearest assailant, and dispatches him efficiently with two stabs to the back. The man's knees buckle, and with but a groan he collapses unmoving on the ground.

Seraphina's color spray blasts past the side of Idris' head to envelop the attackers. The assassin who attacked you in the alley gets an arm up to shield his eyes, but his helpers don't. They stand immobile as their minds process the sensory overload, but shake it off fairly quickly - but not quickly enough to escape harm. Idris lands a blow across the thigh of her target, and Milo's arrow snaps forward and plunges into the attacker's breastplate.

Brokav faces off against his set of attackers as well. Two of them split up and come at him from the side, but he spoils the attack of one with an expert beat parry and ducks out of the other one's swing - right into the arms of the burly assassin, who waits for an opening and then lunges forward to grab the Master of Initiates' arms.

The assassins move with purpose and resolve; despite being slashed by Idris' sword, clawed at by a giant bat, shot by magic force missiles, and scarred by acid, the attackers press their mission.

Pretty does slow one down with a slash across the back of his leg. As the man starts to fall, Milo's arrow takes him in the throat and leaves him gurgling out his life on the ground.

The thug grabs his friends and they beat feet for the city proper with the one seeing thug guiding his still-blinded compatriots.

Brokav starts to say something to Idris, but the burly assassin drives an elbow into his gut, driving the wind from his lungs, then puts the instructor into a headlock that allows precious little of that air back. Taking advantage of Brokav's immobile state, the other assassin tumbles underneath the reach of the dire bat and drives his blade home in Brokav's back. Hearing Idris' cry, Seraphina could see that the Count was in a dire position, but that Maja could not reach him safely with the way the assassins were gathered around him. She reached out six hands toward her friend and called out her intention, "Quick Maja! My vanishing trick!"

Seeing Brokav in serious trouble, Maja curses herself for dropping her metamagic rod when she needed it to heal at a distance. Still, she was ready to wade into some assassins, until Sera offered a perfect solution. "Right!" she says simply, understanding what needed to be done. She calls forth her magics, allows Sera to make her vanish, and then touches Brokav to deliver the needed healing.

Brokav's wounds mend and knit together in response to Maja's healing touch. Invigorated, the Master of Initiates breaks out of the burly assassin's grasp and kicks him back a few steps. Seeing himself still surrounded, Brokav leaps to the side, tucking and rolling past the blades of the assassins that seek his life. Brokav leaps back to his feet on the other side of the melee, catching an attacker between himself and Idris.

Deprived of their targets, the assassins change their plans. The thugs turn towards Idris and target her with their dueling swords. Idris ducks the first clumsy slash, responding with a front kick to the knee that staggers the attacker, already weakened by attacks from Kivan's bat. The thug beside him takes advantage of Idris' off-balance stance and thrusts his sword home. Idris manages a partial parry, turning what would have been a ruinous stroke into a mere flesh wound across her arm.

Brokav is not so lucky. The one thug adjacent to the Count thrusts his sword into Brokav's belly and wrenches it, provoking a shout of pain from Idris' tormenter.

The two assassins who ambushed you in the alley, however, seem to have other goals in mind. Both draw a twig from their belts and strike it across their swords before throwing the twigs to the ground. Immediately, they are obscured by clouds of billowing smoke and you lose sight of them.

Pretty, even her darkvision helpless against the effect, sees the burly assassin move to the south before disappearing into the smoke.

Pretty has an AoO against the burly assassin, and Kivan's bat has an AoO against the other one. Both are made against partial concealment (20% d100 miss chance, low is bad). After these attacks nobody in the party can see where the two assassins are. Party up!

That is correct, you move through threatened squares freely while invisible. The assassins just used smokesticks, the striking on swords thing was just flavor. Activating an alchemical item is generally a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity. Pretty's action comes before Idris' in the initiative order so I applied Idris' attack against the one she flanks with Brokav.

assassin? will save: 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 4 + 5 = 19

Kivan feels his spell fail to grasp the mind of Brokav's assailant, but the combination of Seraphina's fire blast and the bat's relentless biting puts paid to the westernmost attacker.

Pretty takes advantage of her natural element, concealment, and brings her target down with a stab to the kidney and a slash across the throat from behind that sprays Idris with warm blood.

Idris turns and lashes out with her blade, finding her mark as the remaining visible attacker shakes his head to clear it from Kivan's mental grasp. Idris' sword runs the man through, and when she wrenches it out his knees buckle and he pitches face first onto the bloody sand.

Brokav once again is the beneficiary of Maja's succor, her healing magic mending the duelist's serious wounds.

Suddenly, no attackers are visible, though two clouds of smoke remain. The viewing areas are suddenly silent as the onlookers see the fighting end and contemplate the meaning of what just occurred.

Brokav coughs and wipes blood from his mouth with a sleeve. "Many have cause to hate me, Initiate," he says, catching his breath. "Failed students most of all." Brokav doesn't put his sword away, and his eyes burn with fury and suspicion.

out of initiative. The bat would have seen both assassins make their exit, and Pretty saw the burly one move past her, but otherwise they screened their retreat with smoke.

"I'm sure, Master Brokav," Idris says grimly.

She goes around to the fallen thugs, checking to see if any are still alive. If any are, she suggests to Maja, "One of those surges of healing energy you can do would help Brokav and me, and also bring this waste of air back to the point where we can interrogate him."

Blast you, recurring enemies! :)

Having just spent all this effort to heal Brokav, the still-invisible Maja is sorely tempted to kick the arrogant Master of Initiates in exasperation. But she contents herself with chiding Brokav with her disembodied voice. "You ungrateful swine! Idris and the rest of us are the only reason you're still alive. Do you think the many wounds the assassins scored on you just healed themselves? I promise that's not the case."

As she reappears, Maja is also seen checking for a thug that might still have life. She indeed holds forth her holy symbol of Erastil and channels healing to the party, Brokav, and the thug. Channel: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 3) = 12

It would indeed be a move action to draw the tindertwigs, but these devious, no-good practitioners of skulduggery possess the Quickdraw feat! I haven't actually encountered tindertwig use in PFS, I see them more as very smoky strike-anywhere matches. Regardless, they haven't got away - they're merely one move action ahead of you!

Milo's spell locks his vision on one of the fleeing assassins, the supernatural tracking piercing the veil of smoke with which the assassin had hoped to screen his retreat.

Though the smoke prevented you from directly seeing their retreat nobody had line of sight, it's no mystery where the assassins fled. Clear footprints to the west show where the one assassin hightailed it out of the Ring of Honor, and equally clear footsteps and droplets of blood show where the burly assassin fled south. They can't be more than a few moments ahead of you.

encounter map updated, two chases!

After a mad but brief scramble out of the Ring of Honor, the trails of both assassins are fairly clear.

The blood and footprints to the south lead straight to a sewer grate near a concentration of downspouts that channel rainwater from the roofs of the Academy's buildings to the sewers of Restov. At one point a ladder provided safe access to the subterranean channels, but vandals or saboteurs have removed it. Without the ladder, it's a steep fall into uncertain footing in the near-dark and reeking tunnel.

The westward-fleeing assassin makes a beeline for the main gate of the Academy. As the crow flies, or the assassin flees, the path takes you through the seemingly endless rows of Pistes upon which many of the Fireblade trainees duel - some with wooden training swords and others with sharp steel. Just beyond lies the swordworks where initiates learn the craft and care of the Aldori dueling swords they depend on. The gate lies at the end of the swordworks, but the thick iron bars have been shut as the general alarm was raised.

Get to chasing! As a reminder, passing one obstacle advances a card. Passing both advances three cards, but a failure on this attempt makes you lose a turn. The assassins have picked their routes well to be hazardous to pursuers - there are consequences for failing the obstacle checks.
