You find yourselves in the office of Ambrus Valsin, the venture-captain in charge of daily operation in and around the Grand Lodge.

“All right, Pathfinders! Listen up. I know you are new recruits eager to make names for yourselves in the organization, but first we need to make sure you are up to snuff and won’t get yourself killed out there. I have a number of small assignments for you and your team, and it would be best if you could finish them before the day’s end.

“Every day we get some doe-eyed hopeful or some sniveling bootlicker willing to do anything to join up with the Pathfinders. Most of them are good kids, but not all of them have the salt to make it in a world like this. It’s rough out there and I’m not just talking about the ruins, tombs, and wilderness Pathfinders find themselves in on missions.

We’ve got people who look down their noses at us, folks who think we squander our resources, and agents who want to take everything we have collected. This wealth of knowledge and these items of lore make us the most powerful organization on the planet. That said, since we are fractured and widespread, it’s difficult for that power to light on anything for too long. For every friend of the Society, there are two enemies.

“Your first mission, to test your mettle and loyalties, sends you to meet a few people important to the Society living here in Absalom. These are other venture-captains or close allies of our organization, so follow their orders as you would mine. I’ve prepared a list of things I want you to do. They’re not arranged in any particular order of importance, but I want them all completed as quickly as possible. Only report to me once you complete them all. Included in the envelope you hold in your hands is the list, complete with the name of your contact, and directions to the meeting location.”

The first and most important thing when you're setting off with a new group of pathfinders is to get to know one another. You will be relying upon each other to complete your mission and perhaps even stay alive. It's essential you know what each of the others is capable of and where their skills lie. Before you set off I want you to start by introducing yourselves to each other as you would at the beginning of any mission.

At first glance, the figure leaning against the wall of the Venture-Captain's office looks much like a tall, slender human man. A closer look makes clear that, rather than an elaborately-cut cloak on his back, what he has is a pair of large wings. Mostly a dark, smoky grey in color, with touches of golden yellow, the wings extend from about the level of his ears down to where the tips just brush the floor. His hair, longish and swept back from his face, is of the same dark grey as his wings. His face is narrow, with large, alert, amber eyes and a hooked nose. He carries a heavy black bow behind his left shoulder, and a coiled whip, glinting with shards of metal, rides at his hip.

"I'm Aeris, a servant of the Savored Sting, the Lady Calistria. I've just come from exploring a dank cave for the Society, and I'm looking forward to some time in the city, much more my speed. I'm pretty good with my bow, but when a bunch of guys with swords block my way to the target, I worry I'll hit them instead. As much as they might deserve it for blocking my shot, I usually end up wading right into the fight with them."

Posting on my phone this week, so can't see the handout, but I'll go at the tasks in whatever order people like.

A tall, golden-haired half-orc woman stands at easy attention before the Venture Captain. She wears makeshift armour of cured hide, and carries a shortbow at her back, but her chosen weapon is clearly the well-used scythe held at her side.

"Greetings. I am Zlata, of Lastwall. Sworn Paladin of Erastil, protector of the vulnerable, defender of the innoc-- Arc!" Seeing a familiar face, she breaks into a wide grin and steps over to clap Arcana heartily on the shoulder. "It's good to see you again!"

Arcana is a Plumekith and it shows. Like a bird, her amber iris' take up the entirety of her eyes. No white sclera is visible and she sports feathered, steel colored wings. The wings are quite large, when folded the pollex of the wings adds two feet to her height and the lowest part of the wings just drag along the ground. Her tunic isn't so much a shirt as a sleeveless and backless rectangle of grey cotton with three ties to keep it on. Her arms aren't entirely bare, several large feathers lay flat against her skin. Her short hair is the same steely color as her feathers. Although she's short, her large wings and defined muscles make her look quite imposing, at least when she wants to. She carries an exquisitely made longbow with a temple sword at her hip and is dragging an almost disturbing number of a variety of arrows along with her.

Arcana giggles with glee when she sees Zlata. She jumps up and throws her arms around the half-orc, engulfing her in her wings. "Zlata! My best friend! I missed you I can't believe we're gonna be working together again!" She releases the woman and clears her throat to address the rest of the group. "I am Arcana. I'm not a servant of a lady or a protector or anything like that but I am an official Pathfinder!" She concludes her short introduction and flashes Aeris a grin.

Aeris is quite struck by Arcana's appearance, and how much like his own it is. He is tall where she is short, and her wings are proportionately larger on her, but in many ways, down to the color of their wings and hair - and the very fact that they both have wings - they are much alike.

"It is very good to meet you all, and you especially, Arcana," he says, "I have scarcely seen others of my kind before, and have never worked closely with one. Perhaps you can teach me some of your skill with your bow, and I can try to do the same." As he speaks, Aeris lays a hand on his longbow, brand new and showing little sign of use as of yet.

Turning to the rest of the party, he says, "Starting at the top of the list sounds fine to me. I'm ready when you are."

Would someone mind telling me what the first task on the list is? I'm only able to post from my phone for the next couple of days and can't see the list of tasks. Thanks!

List of Assignments:

1) A man named Guaril Karela runs a curio shop in the Docks called the Pickled Imp. Go to him and fill his request as a favour to the Society. I believe is has something to do with a set of rare books.

2) Ollysta Zadrian requested aid and is expecting you at the Temple of the Shining Star in the Ascendant Court. She needs someone to deliver a parcel of medicine and curatives to a needy orphanage and verify the character of the recipient.

3) Visit the offices of Sirian nobleman Dremdhet Salhar in the Wise Quarter. The Pathfinder Society needs to obtain permission to delve the Salhar ancestral vaults beneath Sothis. He has made a verbal agreement, and your visit makes it official. You will receive an official charter and detailed maps. Do no embarrass the Society in this matter.

4) Chelish Paracountess Zarta Dralneen possesses and item loaned from the Vaults. Meet with her in her estate in the Ivy District and retrieve the item in her possession.

"Good. It seems this is not your first mission for some of you and a few already know each other. That is good. The true strength of the Pathfinders is in working together.

If you do not have any questions you may begin. Off with you."

You are allowed to shop for anything you need in the market on your way between the tasks.

The group heads off to the curio shop The Pickled Imp in the seedy harbourside Docks district. On your way there, Aeris you have a funny feeling the group is being followed. When you turn to look you think you see a figure watching you, but in a flash it disappears into the crowd.

On reaching The Pickled Imp you all notice This creepy shop contains myriad odds and ends, most bereft of any discernible use. A number of malformed creatures and creature parts bob in jars on a long, prominent shelf, a tiny fetal devil centered in this macabre lineup. The shopkeeper, a greasy-haired Varisian with a thin mustache, shouts from behind the cluttered counter:

“Ah yes, I see the Pathfinders have arrived. I’m glad Ambrus was able to lend a few of his new recruits to help me. Please come in and let me tell you what I need.”

Looking around as if to be absolutely certain no customers are browsing the aisles of knock-off Thuvian burial urns or supposed Azlanti porcelain, he begins again.

“Well met. I am Guaril Karela. A friend of mine has a warehouse near here and he received a parcel on behalf of me and some of my associates, but there’s a problem. See, Master Gelbane had to leave town in a hurry and our shipment is still waiting at his warehouse. Rumor is he ended up in trouble with the law and the place was seized. I heard tell from
someone down at the docks that some creep was snooping around his warehouse just the other night, so I want to make sure nothing of mine was taken. He keeps all kinds of things, from beer to nails, in that old pelican, but every now and then he stores something really special. This is one of those cases.

“There’s a big crate marked with three crows arranged in a triangle. Inside that crate is a smaller container with a few books and papers in it. That’s the only parcel I’m interested in, and as far as I’m concerned, you can help yourself to the rest of the crate. Honestly, anything else you want in the place too. I’m sure the once things get sorted out, the city will seize most everything else anyway.

“My associates and I often work with the Pathfinders when it comes to special relics and documents, getting them in and out of ports and across borders where the authorities ask too many questions. Most people don’t realize what they have and frankly many don’t deserve to have it, so sometimes we help take the goods off their hands. If things work out well and you get this done, I’d be glad to talk with you more and help you out with any future endeavors, as long as you help me out too. I’m good at returning favors, trust me.”

MAP

Perched on the end of a long pier fifteen feet above the water, the warehouse appears to struggle against its own roof, threatening to sag into the bay below. No light shines from the building’s windows and only the movement of gulls and pelicans stirs the scene.

You all notice the pier this pelican warehouse sits on stretches 100 feet from the boardwalk and the docks proper, and stands 15 feet above the water. The planks on the pier are sturdy but weathered. A few local fishermen and some kids sit scattered along the pier casting nets or bobbing lines into the waters below.

The building looks abandoned and in disrepair. The windows are dark and dirty and provide no view into the structure’s interior. A small boat bobs in the water below, tethered to the pier by a stout, salt-crusted rope. The warehouse’s heavy wooden front door is locked and the loading door is barred from the inside.

Arcana:
You notice that two slats on the building near the doorframe seem a bit more rickety than the others.

DC 15: Knowledge (local) / Diplomacy (to gather info):
Called pelican warehouses, these buildings perch at the end of piers, allowing a ship to load and unload farther out from the busier docks. Many of them either accommodate smaller vessels that are in a hurry or larger ships unable to find an open dock. Rare these days, most pelican warehouses lie in disrepair, withered from storms and salt, and every year it seems another one falls into the harbor. An increased tax on this type of property keeps many of the owners from rebuilding and some have even relinquished the titles to their small warehouses, allowing them to fall into the hands of squatters and smugglers—or into the bay itself. Smugglers sometimes use small boats to slip under the warehouse, sawing a hole in the floor or prying boards in the night, and sneaking in to loot the place or just drop a crate into their boat from above and paddle away in the night.

As you step inside you notice darkness fills the warehouse, the ambient light from outside blocked by a filthy, oily film on the structure’s few windows. Darting illumination comes from light reflecting off the water through a splintered hole in the floor. Throughout the warehouse, crates, boxes, and barrels lean against each other in vaguely sorted stacks. A lingering smell indicates some of the contents are certainly spoiled.

If you have darkvision you are able to see inside the warehouse otherwise you will require some sort of illumination.

Perception DC 10:
Just inside the door sits a handful of crates and kegs of beer. Most of these smaller crates and barrels contain foodstuffs in various states of freshness. Some crates reek of rot. Stacks of simple coffins sit against the east wall. The rest of the crates stacked along the north and south walls contain simple sundries including, but not limited to beer, blocks of clay, coffee, coils of rope, dried fish, lead ingots, nails, nets, raw cotton, rough wool, spare sails, timber planks, various pulleys and tools, and cheap weapons.

Perception DC 15:
A crane, used for loading and unloading boats, clings to a rail running the length of the warehouse, hanging 5 feet below the high ceiling, and can slide out to extend past the loading doors along the west wall.

Perception DC 20:
The edges of the hole are dangerous and anyone stepping into one of the squares around the hole would require to be quite agile or risk collapsing the floor further—and spilling the crate into the water. In addition, the edges as difficult terrain to move over due to their precarious nature, though if you're agile enough you could pass through normally.

Scythe: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 against +4 AC for cover for Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (1, 1) + 4 = 6

Aeris you started your turn inside the warehouse so you get to move and attack. I'll let you finish your turn.

@Arcana. I also need a con save from you/

Okay - I had moved my token back because I moved it earlier before you really began the encounter. Here's an attack roll, in any case:

Morningstar, flank: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 + 2 = 20
Morningstar damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

I'm going to be offline later today, so I'm going to post my attack for when I'm up next.

MW Greatsword attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 for damage: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6) + 6 = 16

The bite Arcana sustained fortunately doesn't transfer any of the disease the rats carry. Zlata brings down a deathly strike but the nearby crate interferes with her attack. Aeris and Arcana team up easily dispatch one of the rats while Insidions massive blade slices the second one cleanly in half.

Combat has ended. Time to get to work on getting the crate. Time to get creative.

Aeris moves over to the crane assembly dangling from the ceiling and tries to determine whether it can be moved over the hole in the floor. "Maybe we could have one of us hang from the crane and hook something up to that crate, lift it off that way?"

Perception? Not sure what's appropriate here: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

"Could move the boat from outside under the hole and just knock the crate down."

Aeris gives Arcana a funny look. He flexes his wings slightly and says, ”You’d rather come swimming in from below than flying in from above? Perhaps we have less in common than I thought…”

"It's always prudent to have a backup plan. Perhaps Insidion or I should take the boat below while the two of you make the attempts from above; that way if it falls we'll catch it before it sinks."

"Makes sense to me, Zlata," Aeris responds, "let's just see if we can get this crane working."

Awaiting the results of my check earlier to see if it'll work. If not, dropping it into the boat works for me.
