It’s a misty morning when you spot the big Fort, with its massive stone walls and fortification. You traveled the last few miles through green pastures, and met a few silent peasants ready for another backbreaking day of work in the fields. Patrols of Hellknight are regular, merchant’s caravans come and go, and now that you think about it, you haven’t seen any bandit activity in the last few days….

At the Fort entrance, two heavily armoured Hellknights are on guard duty, their halberds crossed so no one can pass unnoticed. A small rain starts to fall.

Know Local DC 10:
Fort Inevitable is ruled by Hellknights, and has been so for the last 30 years or more. Justice is swift and harsh. Taxes are to be expected, and slavery is common

Know Religion DC 15:
As the town is quite prosperous, and a center of civilization in wilderness, you’re quite sure to find some priest of Abadar here… and probably a few shrines to Hellish powers.

Know Arcana DC 20:
you’ve hear of the Emerald Spire in your studies as a place of great power and powerful magic. Rumors say it has never been fully explored…

Davlamin:
You’ve heard of an Aztlant expert and fellow mage named Royst lives in the Fort Inevitable. That would be enough to spike your interest, but then you’ve heard of potential mystical treasures in the Emerald Spire.. that was even better, and you took the road, happy for some new arcanic challenges

Zinli:
The last town you shot your guns in was very happy to show you the general direction of Fort Inevitable, a place where no gunslinger has ever set foot! They would surely enjoy such a talented gnome, and will be amazed by your skills! Or at least, that was what the townspeople said you. With much enthousiasm. Hey, here are the walls of the Fort! Time to think about your entrance…

Strider:
As a native to the Fort, you know how oppressive the Hellknights can be. Sometimes, you just have to run away for a few months, to appreciate your liberty, and even more so when your last thieving enterprise isn’t as successful as you have wished. Well, you’re pretty sure the heat as died now, after the disastrous affair with the merchant’s wife’s collar… it’s been five months! You should find some new opportunities quick.

Rahiv:
You are a bringer of life, and you were a wanderer. 3 years ago, you were still a slave, captured by an Hellknight. Now you are free, having earned your liberty by using your healing powers during an hard fought battle between a Hellknight patrol and a dire beast, even saving the life of an Hellknight soldier who would have died without your magical ability. Now you haven’t much, but what you have is yours truly.

Joza:
You have scouted the Emerald Spire whereabouts recently, and you know there are dark things indeed inside. You can’t ask for the Hellknights help, as they see you as some kind of intelligent pet, and you surely can’t act alone. Finding some courageous fighters and adventurers to explore the Spire should be easy, as many men and women of valor journey on the Crusader Road toward the Worldwound. But who can you trust?

Ekran:
Between the missions for the Blue Basilisks and your duties for the Church of Abadar, the days are flying by sometimes… Fortunatly, you were wounded in your last mission for the Basiliks, and you milk your wound, trying to get some fun and pleasure at the local Inn, Juliver Arms. Sure, once in a while, you go to the Red Shield Tavern, just for a change, but there are too much Hellknight there, and they don’t know what “fun” is…

Let’s go people!

A brand new day was starting, and Zinli was feeling happy. The town she just had left was really charming, and she was glad that its inhabitants showed her the road to Fort Inevitable.

Even after the mess she did in the tavern.

How could she possibly have known that this lamp was highly inflammable?

Well, at least that guy who defied her wasn't laughing that much after that.

Probably because he had lost the few hair he had left.

But it was a thing of the past.

The most important thing right now, was that, after a long road, she was arriving in Fort Inevitable, and she was happy.

She even managed to picked up some pretty flowers on her way, to put them in her bag. It wasn't as useful as black powder, of course, but still, she was feeling nice having them.

There was the problem of money, still... But surely she could find work in this big city? The people from the other town had assured her that she would.

To make her entrance, Zinli decided to try first the option that every sane gnome would have tempted in the first place...

The front door.

"Hi, there! I would very much like to enter! Could you step aside, please? You're blocking that door."

Rahiv walked out of the detention area gently massaging his wrists, he had gotten back what little he had possessed and they had even been 'kind' enough to make sure it was in proper order before handing it back to him.

He sighed softly, he was still in a strange land and really didn't know much of what he should do. He knew no way home and they had given him a small amount of coin for saving the guard's life.

He asked a passerby where he might go to enjoy a bit of relaxation and perhaps a good soak and food.

He moved on to the inn that was proffered up to him and walked up to the bar. "It has been a while since I've had decent food instead of gruel and bread...do you have any fish on the menu, maybe a kelp or algae salad to go with it? And could you provide a room and a hot bath?" he asked politely trying not sound as if he had been in a cage the last three years being barked at and ordered.

Davlamin Glimmergaunt sighed as he pulled his hood over his head as began to feel rain starting to fall. "What rotten luck! It starts raining," he thought to himself. He saw the guards wearing their imposing armor and halberds. Sighing again as he made his way towards the guards, he began to wonder if he could recall anything about this city's history while also seeing if there was a way around the guards too. He would like to avoid any hellknight entanglements if possible.

Joza glanced upward as the rain began to fall, pulling her hood up to cover her head and ears. Opposite to what most people would have expected, she actually liked the rain. Back home on the M'neri Plains, she would often find any excuse to stop what she was doing in order to simply sit and listen to it fall, enjoying the drumming sound that it made on the hide tents.

No matter where you go, the rain is still the same.

She found this both a cheery and comforting thought as she contemplated the two imposing Hellknights standing guard at the entrance to the fort.

They might let me inside, but they won't help me. But finding others who would want to investigate the Spire will be easy once I get inside, right?

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Glancing around, nothing unusual stood out to her, though her attention was drawn to the two figures that approached the Hellknights; one of average height and the other quite short, with...

Is...is that blue hair?

She thought for a moment and then nodded curtly to no one in particular as she reached her decision. Making sure to have her weapons stowed away and to look as non-threatening as possible, she carefully made her way over to the where the guards and the other two individuals were standing.

There's strength in numbers...with three of us to watch, they can't watch any one of us quite as closely. I just hope I won't cause too much of a scene here...surely these Hellknights have seen one of the folk before?

As she approaches, she can see the two individuals more clearly. A female gnome and a male...human? Barely catching the end of the gnome's sentence, Joza coughs quietly. "Hello! Ah, I would also like entry if I may. The road has been long and my feet are tired - a dry place to sleep and a warm meal would be wonderful."

You manage to enter the city unnoticed- or at least you think so!- climbing a wooden wall and escaping the Hellknights attention. Spending a hour to get back in touch with the crowd, you hear that the Hellknights are on the edge, fighting about a new band of thieves called the Seven Foxes, who have inside contacts and target the merchant caravans. Thievery is even more severely punished than before. Your favorite Inn, the Juliver's Inn, is probably open by now.On a side note, I've send you a MP

The strange blue haired gnome, the catwoman and the half elf are asked 5 copper pieces each as a non resident fee, to enter the Fort.

One Hellknight guard even give them, at no cost, some directions
If you need some hot meal, go to the Juliver's Inn. Can't miss it, a big building with a red roof, right after the market. Just don't walk on the owner...

The guard chuckle cruelly.

The Hellknight let Rahiv pass, as he is a free citizen of the town. The shaman goes directly to Juliver's Inn, asking for a meal. Inside, a man is probably already drunk, telling tales for the enjoyment of a few locals. The Juliver Arms is owned by halflings, and short servers are quick to check on the kitchen to prepare new meals.

Davlamin:
History check: you don't recall much about the local historical events. You know the Fort is an old stronghold for the Hellknights, maybe nearly half a century old. You can't remember the name of the original Commander, unfortunatly.

Strider, in the tavern:
Beside the loud speaking man, you notice a strange man entering the Inn an ordering a meal of fish. For what you have heard, the merchant and his wife have long ago gone from the Fort.

you're all now in the tavern (13 on the Map)

The half elf quickly recalled that near the fort was a set of ancient ruins called the Emerald Spire, a place of great magic, great power...and great danger.Probably haven't been fully explored because of that. I wonder if the ancient Azlanti were connected to the Emerald Spire in some way. I'll have to ask the sage Royst when I see him. After recalling that the fort was probably a half century old and was an important headquarters for the hellknihghts although he couldn't remember the previous commander's name to save his life, Davlamin sighed as he paid the five copper pieces to the hellknight. He was polite enough to thank the guard for the directions and wise enough to keep his mouth shut on what he thought about slavery and the hellknights then noticed the strange humanoid feline calling out to him. He was a bit puzzled by her appearance but then realized that he had read about the catfolk, although this was his first time meeting one. He smiled as he looked her over. He was fascinated by her cheetah like markings, having been fascinated by the quick footed creatures when his djinn auntie showed him her pet celestial cheetahs. He bowed to her smiling. @Joza and Zinli Good morning my dears, he said to the catfolk and the gnome, a pleasure to meet you! I would ask you and this fine gnome lady here your names but I suggest we hurry to the inn the guard directed us to before we catch a cold from the rain! He smiled and winked at the catfolk for she had caught his eye. Upon arriving at the inn he held the door for the two women and even went so far as to bow to the female catfolk again smiling as he did so.

"Oh!" Zinli replied to the guard, with a (sincerely?) shocked tone. She gave him the five coppers.

"No! Certainly, we won't do that, for we are polite and courteous people... But I understand your concern. As a guard, you have to protect and respect every citizen of this town... And if I were in your shoes, I would very be careful not to stomp on people's feet too."

She passed through the door quickly. Surely, it would take them some time to get the joke, and she had the feeling that they wouldn't burst out laughter.

Back in the other town, people told me that Fort Inevitable wasn't that bad, but those guards were unpleasant...

She looked at the tall man and the catfolk woman, tilting her head back. She adressed them a bright smile.

"Hi! Looks like we're heading for the same place..."

When she entered the inn, and walked up to the bar. She raised an amused eyebrow at the drunk man.

"Same drink as him, please," she ordered. "But not the same quantity. And you?" she asked to the man and the catfolk.

While waiting for her drink, she took some time to take a look around, to fulfill her curiosity...

That went well!

Joza gives the Hellknights a bit of a puzzled look at their tone as she digs out five copper pieces. "Thank you for the directions, but why would I walk on the owner? I know I'm tall but I try very hard to not step on or trip over any of the smaller folk when they are nearby," she says, her expression quite serious. "It would be rude of me to not watch where I am going - see? She understands," Joza continues, nodding at the blue-haired gnome. "I am sure someone has tripped over her before from not paying attention to their surroundings."

After paying her five copper pieces, she continues on through the gate, trailing along with the gnome and the man. When the little gnome addresses her, she smiles and nods. "Hello! That would seem to be the case," she agrees. "And good morning," she offers slightly puzzled smile in response to the man's wink. "I'm not sure that I've ever heard of getting a cold from getting a little wet, but yes, if we are all going to the same place let's hurry on and we can talk more there."

As they arrive at the Juliver Arms, Joza gives the man another curious look as he smiles and bows while holding the door for her, but simply shrugs and smiles as she enters through the doorway. She had more or less grown used to being stared at ever since leaving home, as it was apparently rather unusual for many of the folk to travel this far north. Once inside, she casts a curious look around.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

The boisterous, drunken man is rather hard to miss, especially surrounded as he was by fawning women. Aside from him, the only other tavern patron to catch Joza's eye is the rather tall, thin man having a meal over at one of the tables. She can't help but notice that something looks rather unusual about him, but in the dim light and noise of the tavern, she can't quite pin down what it might be.

Her thoughts are interrupted by her two walking companions as the little gnome bellies up to the bar and the man introduces himself as Davlamin, pulling his hood back to reveal that he isn't human, but half-elven instead. "Oh, er...milk would be fine for me too," she quickly replies. "Or water. Most brews don't sit well with me, even if my belly is full." As the bartender fetches their orders, she opens her mouth to respond to Davlamin's query but is caught completely off-guard when he takes her hand and gently kisses it.

Is...is this some sort of greeting ritual among half-elves? How do I respond?

"Joza Fersig, of the Fersig Tribe," she replies, shifting a bit awkwardly. "I'm...well, I'm a traveler, I guess you could say. And, er..." she looks at a bit of a loss before finally blurting out, "I don't mean to offend, but I'm still not very familiar with many of the customs of hu-er people. Is this a customary greeting? Should I kiss your hand in return?" she asks, looking genuinely curious.

(Cringing just a bit for the half elf paying for every one drink and the missing food, kinda defeating purpose of offering a drink to joza who he has yet to know by name. Shrugging off his advice as if pointless suggestions.)

"hmm amazed your eyes are clearer then my hand, perhaps your eyes pair with coin to share or perhaps a job that needs quick work"

(With a bit of a grudge smirk for reply directed at devlamin. His deep voice speaks with slithering essence.)

(His attention split between joza and davlamin although still much of his focus resides on joza and the door should he need it. Cleaverly appearing near the door when confronting joza after breaking stealth. Thinking: "really need to work on that slip of the hand tricks. Can't believe he spotted me. " starting to ponder if this guy was able to see him stealth to)

Oof, I'm having a bit of a time keeping track of the action here! For simplicity's sake, I'm going to just roll with it as Joza not noticing Strider until he pops up next to her. She's been too distracted by everything else to notice his antics ;)

At the words 'magnificent' and 'lovely', things finally begin to fall into place for Joza as she now has an idea of why Davlamin has been smiling and winking at her for the past few minutes.

Oh dear...I hope this won't be a repeat of that strange couple I met in Port Peril. At least Davlamin doesn't seem as...pushy. And he really does seem like he wants to learn; that's a good thing.

"Well...among members of the tribe, it's custom to greet each other by 'tukinga ihu' - or bumping noses. For others, we simply bow or say 'Hello!', as I did earlier." Before she can say anything else, she jumps with surprise as a feline voice suddenly speaks right in her ear. Whipping around, she is amazed to see an extremely tall, black-furred catfolk standing right next to her. She's vaguely aware that this stranger has just offered to pay for her drinks for the evening, but she's too amazed and delighted to see another one of the folk to properly respond.

It's been ages since I've seen one of the folk! And wait...how did he manage to creep up on me like that? Joza, pay attention!

She snaps back to reality, brow furrowing slightly in puzzlement as she notices Davlamin and this strange folk whispering among themselves.

Odd...Davlamin spoke like he didn't know this one.

As she waits, not wanting to interrupt their whispering, she turns around at the sound of the man at the table inquiring about his food. Once again, she finds herself gazing curiously at him as he addresses the halfling server with a look of genuine puzzlement. Suddenly remembering her manners, she brings her gaze back around to Davlamin, the strange folk, and the little gnome. "It's good to see another of the folk this far north! Please, tell me your name. Yours too," she adds, offering a friendly smile to the blue-haired gnome. "Mine is Joza Fersig, of the Fersig tribe."

(Bowing before her as he over heard her comment of bowing as traditional greetings. While the thought of coin upon her escaped his mind, his eyes glimmered of interest.)

what brings you to these parts?

(Thanking the gods that little be done with the missing fish and coin upon his side. Carefully weighing the bag mentally to determine an estimated amount of profit. sleight of hand for bag: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 bring discrete about it. int check for weight: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8. surely he didn't want anyone to notice. A small laugh breaks his lips as he watches a few scramble to the coin, hoping his lifted coin was but a few more then his cost of distraction)

Davlamin smirked a bit as he realized that this strider was also interested in Joza as well. She is quite attractive so it's no wonder that others would be drawn to her. As Dalvamin pays for the meal and drinks seeing that indeed it had put a dent in what money he had with him. He told the bartender when you you take the fish to the man who didn't get his send him another one as well on me for I feel bad for him..

He then noticed the woman smiling at him. He smiled back and then asked the bartender who that woman was before turning back to strider and whispering that he would be wise to also not take other things besides fish from others nodding at the catfolk's pouch. He then asked Joza as he took out his journal So tell me more about the Fersig tribe for I'm most interested in learning more about them and you. He smiled at her as he secretly prayed to the Savored Sting bless him with luck with Joza. Oh I almost forgot! I need to ask the bartender for directions to the sage Royst about any Azlanti ruins as well as information on the Emerald Spire. I apologize Strider and Joza I can be such absent minded at times. Which reminds me, what brings you here as well Strider? . He was trying to see if he could learn more about the catfolk as meeting two for the first time was truly an experience of a lifetime well for him anyways.

"Tastes good!" she exclaimed, putting down her tankard. "Another one, please! Don't worry, I'll pay it myself," she reassured Davlamin.

She only noticed Strider's presence when he started to talked.

"Wow! Don't know if that's an effect of alcohol, but I didn't see you coming, buddy. Kinda creepy."

She barely catch the end of the conversation between Rahiv and the server.

"What? You lost your fish? Not common. Which way did it go? I could find it for ya if you'd like!" she cheerfully offered.

She almost didn't heard Joza, and seemed strangely surprised by her question.

"Oh... The name's Zinli," she said in a sincerely puzzled tone. "It's strange. Not many people have asked me that these days... Or not in a friendly way, I mean. Nice to meet you," she quickly added, as if afraid to forget it.

Upon hearing the witty humor of Zinli, the half-elf laughed. My my! You have such a sharp wit and a splendid sense of humor. You must make friends quite easily. Davlamin wrote down everything that Zinli told him which wasn't a lot actually. I'm not from around here either. I'm actually from the village of Novoboro. I was raised by my parents who were priests of Calistria. But I'm not a priest actually. I'm a sorcerer as well as a scholar of the Ancient Azlanti. I came here hoping to meet Royst, who I've heard is an expert around here as well as learn more about this Emerald Spire I lve heard about it. I've heard it is filled with great magical power as well as great terrible dangers.

Chuckling a bit, the half elf sorcerer replied Oh yes, I love meeting new people especially if I find them interesting. He made a quick glance and a smile at Joza. That would be good, but I'm not sure how the Hellknights here view adventurers. I would greatly prefer to avoid any Hellknight...entanglements. I would suggest we find out first. He then asked the bartender, My good sir if I might ask you something, two things actually: directions to Royst the sage and do the Hellknights require adventurers to get special permits, sign a special contract, or anything along those lines?

Rahiv visibly flinched when Zinli touched him and spoke to him. He wasn't really paying attention, something he should have known better about and turned towards her to see who was talking to him.

"I don't think we need to worry over a single fish, though I will let you know if there is a sudden lack of them in the sea." he said smiling trying to play off the flinch as if it was nothing. One of his hands going to rub at his wrist. He saw now that there was a bit of a crowd now near the bar and looked around.

"I didn't know that you all were here, forgive me I'll move somewhere else to let you band enjoy yourselves." he said as he started to get up.

"If that is your wish, I will stay then." he said taking his seat back. He wasn't sure how she spoke to the chair but he assumed she could as he had heard of people being able to talk to plants and animals...so why not chairs.

"I am Rahiv, though I haven't been called by that in some time. It is good to hear it again." he said as he asked for a glass of water.

"Forgive me for eavesdropping but you are asking about getting permission to check out things in the area? Are you a native, if not you might find it a bit hard to do. "I thought I had done a decent job of hiding myself, helps when you can adjust your skin color. But yes, I am one. Though I prefer to hide it around towns. But again I apologize for any sort of problem I may have caused you and I am indeed thankful for any information and assistance you can give us. The half elf was indeed thankful and wished he could afford to give the undine more food. He was bit shocked and a little more than disgusted about people using slaves. He found such things horrid and dishonorable. Of course he was smart enough not to say it out loud. Especially because of the Hellknights.

Don't worry, Joza hasn't forgotten the questions being posed to her by Davlamin and Strider; she'll get to them in time hehe.

Rapidly losing track of the various conversations going on around her, Joza sighs to herself.

The other peoples mean well, but they're so...noisy, sometimes. Always trying to talk over each other.

Among the random chatter, her ears perk up at the mention of the Emerald Spire. "The Emerald Spire? I'd heard rumors of the place on the road to Fort Inevitable and curiosity overtook me, so I went and scouted the area a little. It's...a dangerous place. Full of dark things - I'm sure of it. And I'm sure that such things won't be content to stay within the Spire forever." Here, Joza's face takes on a rather downcast expression. "But most travelers are making their way to the Worldwound...and I'm sure these Hellknights will be of no help either," she continues, lowering her voice slightly.

She pauses, looking around at the small group that seems to have congregated. "Would any of you want to have a closer look with me? I'm fairly skilled at getting along in the wild and I can hold my own in a fight. Fair shot with a bow, too, or so I've been told."

Upon hearing Joza's interest in the Emerald spire, Dalvamin was taken a back by a bit. Surely Calistria is with me today!. Smiling back he replied Well now it seems we share a common interest. While some scholars would not dare cause damage to a set of historic ruins, I on the other hand am not some scholars. It would provide me with a chance to chronicle the ruins while at the same time aiding you in removing the evils that have infested it. I would be honored to assist you my dear Joza.. He bowed to her, smiling. Dalvamin had no desire to travel to the Worldwound he did have every desire to assist he female catfolk. Maybe the sage Royst would know more. And what of you Strider would you like to assist us? While he suspected that the male catfolk was possibly interested in Joza as well it was better to have more adventurers on this...well quest. And having seen Strider moving almost completely unseen was a plus too.

Rahiv listened to them now and raised a brow. It was true that the Hellknights would likely leave it alone lest there was an assault on the city.

"Forgive me you said the Emerald Spire? It is true that the Hellknights give it berth. I don't have anything to do currently apart from look for some employment, as far as a fight is concerned though...I'm afraid I'm not that handy. I suppose I can handle my crossbow alright but I do have a way around wounds." he said before noticing the second fish and pulling a black cat out of seemingly nowhere.

"Looks like someone was nice enough to bring you a plate as well." he said putting what appeared to be probably the healthiest coated cat anyone had seen.

Really? Even the Hellknights fear this Emerald Spire?

The more his new friends talked about the emerald spire the more he began to worry. If something evil and wicked laired there was strong enough to make the usually fearless Hellknights tremble in terror, then something had to be done about it. Well they do say that adventure provides ample opportunities for employment, he told Rahiv. He then asked if the Hellknights had any special restrictions on adventurers.

Shaman (Witch Doctor) 2 AC 16/13T/13Fl +6 Perception, +3 Initiative HP 18/18

Rahiv could only shrug at the asking of any restriction there may be. "I don't know if I would call it fear, I just know they do not bother with it. Perhaps it is simply because they are not being paid to deal with it." he said simply.

Rahiv though about the idea of adventuring, he had heard you could make good gold but it risked ones life. Then again, as someone not human and not a hellknight you risk your life being in this territory all the same. He would give it some thought after seeing what this group might be like when dealing with something simple first.

"A healer is always handy," Joza says, turning to the one called Rahiv for the first time. As she takes in his appearance, for the first time she is able to see the odd green hue to his skin as well as his hair.

Not human either...but what? I've not seen a person like this before.

"Not many are called to walk the healer's path, but it is a role that is just as important as that of the warrior or the scout. Take pride in that," she smiles, trying not to stare. "Davlamin, you, and myself would make three...and maybe Zinli four?" she adds, nodding at the gnome. "And if Strider wishes to join us, that would be five...the foundations of a strong group, I think. Odd numbers are unlucky though - we need one more to make us an even six."

Here, Joza stops and furrows her brow again. "But I'm not familiar with the laws of this land...something about a...fee? We would need to pay these Hellknights a fee to go to the Spire?" She shakes her head in confusion. "That is strange."

Well Hellknights are known for their strict sense of loyalty to law and order. It is best not to get on their bad side.. When Joza asked about a fee the half elf thought. Its not really a fee, well it is but it's something more. Some places require you to get special permission to explore ruins or fight monsters but the main reason is to control low lifes and mercenaries from just waltzing in and doing whatever they please. But yes it is a strange way. Normally I would say just ignore it but since these are Hellknights we are dealing here I would rather not get tossed into jail. and yes odd numbers are...not usually lucky. I'm not sure who we would ask. But she's right Rahiv. Having a healer is important in any adventuring company. And we would be honored if you would join us in this adventure. He smiled at them all. Reminds me of the tales of adventurers that I read about in my books and tomes.
