It’s a misty morning when you spot the big Fort, with its massive stone walls and fortification. You traveled the last few miles through green pastures, and met a few silent peasants ready for another backbreaking day of work in the fields. Patrols of Hellknight are regular, merchant’s caravans come and go, and now that you think about it, you haven’t seen any bandit activity in the last few days….

At the Fort entrance, two heavily armoured Hellknights are on guard duty, their halberds crossed so no one can pass unnoticed. A small rain starts to fall.

Know Local DC 10:
Fort Inevitable is ruled by Hellknights, and has been so for the last 30 years or more. Justice is swift and harsh. Taxes are to be expected, and slavery is common

Know Religion DC 15:
As the town is quite prosperous, and a center of civilization in wilderness, you’re quite sure to find some priest of Abadar here… and probably a few shrines to Hellish powers.

Know Arcana DC 20:
you’ve hear of the Emerald Spire in your studies as a place of great power and powerful magic. Rumors say it has never been fully explored…

Meurasold:
Damn wolves! The trip was nearly uneventful so far. Your bodyguard services were needed by a mage named Eldwis the White, who payed you to escort him to a place called Fort Inevitable, so he could meet an old colleague and maybe organise a team to explore “the Emerald Spire”, whatever that might be. Then, two nights ago, a pack of wolves attacked you. You had no choice but to run quicker than the mage, so you broke his leg…

Aralu:
You don’t know why you’re here. Something is calling you. The spirits of the restless dead, maybe? Knowledge and power are near… You can feel it in your bones!

Gorok:
You’re coming short of alchemical components for your experiments. Fortunatly, civilisation isn’t too far, as you’ve heard of a place called Fort Inevitable, where numerous traders come. You’re not much comfortable around humans, but maybe by keeping a low profile you’ll be allowed to enter.

Zurka:
The orders of your Dragon Lord are simple : explore the Emerald Spire, find everything loot worthy, and find a way to bring them back to the Plane of Shadow. And you know you’d better not fail…

Mary:
One of your kin, a gipsy man named Maleyn, has recently disappeared near the Fort. You don’t know how you know it, but you’re sure magic was involved in his death. Maleyn was a male witch himself, even if you can’t avenge him maybe you can find his body and steal whatever power may lie in his tomb? All you remember about him- you haven’t seen him since ten years or more, he must be 40 years old now- is that he was strongly build, sported an heavy mustache and a red cat’s tattoo on his shoulders.

Katara:
There’s a bounty on a man named Maleyn, a gipsy mage. You have followed his tracks so far, but lost him a few days ago. You know the guy sports an heavy mustache and a red cat’s tattoo on his shoulders, strong build, 40 years old, bald top, and that he was from around Fort Inevitable. He probably still has friends or even family at or near the Fort, so you’ll have to be cautious…

Let’s go people!

Zurka walks slowly along his head bowed down, more to keep the harsh glare of the sun out of his eyes than as a show of meekness. As the rain falls from the sky, he lets the water rivulets run down his cloak unheeding of the fact he is getting soaked. As the Fort comes into view, he looks up taking in the Fort and the surrounding area his eyes wandering involuntarily.

This...this is where my Lord wishes me. A grim, forbidding place. I feel at home here for some reason... He thinks to himself with an inward smirk.

He approaches the waiting Hellknights, head bowed in a gesture of respect and hands away from his weapon. "I wish entrance here. What is the fee for passage?"

And there go my good rolls for the game, he he.

This must be the place Eldwis was talking about. Well, you've got two choices old boy. Either try to seek out this "colleague" or try to find a group of your own. And what do you plan on telling this "colleague," huh? That you left the fool for dead to save your own hide? I'm sure that will go over real well. Best not to mention it. Anyway, it's not like you got paid. So if we expect to make any money of this journey, it looks like it's going to be a trip to this...what did he call it..."Emerald Spire"?

"Hello. Please tell me there is a tavern or inn in this place so I can get out of the rain and get a meal" he says as he approaches the entrance guards.

Well Maleyn, what were you after, power? Che...typical for men to try and show off, there's not many of 'us' in the families...and you've gotten yourself killed. I don't know how, but the occult force notified me somehow, a feeling undeniable. The emerald spire is connected to your demise, who knows, i might succeed where you have failed.

As the others of her family were having a small birthday celebration, back at their wagon camp, Mary instead approached the gates to the town.
A cheap scarf covering the top of her head against the rain, she looked at the bulky warriors.

These zealots are a necessary evil, but they are a pain in the ass for sure.

After the grey-skinned man and the dwarf are done with the two hellknights, she approaches.

"Good day ser knights, what is the fee for entry?"

Witches are already on a tight budget to start with.

One of the guards points to a sign, where the price of the different fees-for merchants, non resident travelers, beasts of burden and so on..- are written.
He looks at the pale faced traveler with suspicion, and ask in a gruff voice.

The fee is five coppers for non resident walkers, as you can all see. Haven't seen your face before, folks. What is your business in the Fort, before we let you enter and seek shelter in one of our inns?

Zurka glances at the female newcomer briefly before turning his attention back to the Hellknight.

Best keep it simple here...no need to exaggerate.

"I am a mercenary looking for a job as a caravan guard or whatever other job is available..." His eyes travel over to the woman again. "Or as a bodyguard." He finishes.

I figure this is a good way for Mary and Zurka to meet and interact with one another.

Indeed.

Her hairflowing over part of her face, masked a smirk, before she stroke it back behind her ear.

Oh, already? I haven't even set foot inside the fort's walls.

Katara enjoyed the rain as it came down her hat keeping most of it off her face. A pleasant day in her mind. Seeing a group already forming at the gate she would approach and listen in looking at the sign seeing the price. Pulling out the copper she would recognize each was giving reason for entering the city. Only overhearing some of them.

'Patience. Any of them could be allies of that man. Chose your words carefully. He is worth a decent amount.'

Her eyes studied each one of them carefully taking notes on looks, dress and equipment. You never knew when such things came in handy.

When they would finally look to her she would let them look her over not hiding any weapons or anything. She stood only 5'5" and an easy 145 before armor. Though by the looks of her it, very little was fat. Her leather llamalar armor was a mottled black red that had seen a few to many days. The greatsword strapped to her back was older. Obviously the handle had been rewrapped recently. Assortments of other weapons were on her and it was clear she was a soldier of some type.

"I am here for work." Her voice had a slight accent, definitely marking her from another area. Her tone was even, controlled, and strong.

The guards have a good look at you, collect the fees, and seems satisfied with your answers

You can find food and lodgings at either the Red Shield Tavern or the Juliver's Inn. Both are just down the street, on Juliver's way. You can't miss them. Juliver will be on your right, with its red roof, it faces the Red Shield Tavern. You just pass the market. No stealin", no disordely conduct. Or fear the Hellknights justice.

You pass through the western gates of the Fort 9 on the map. The wooden walls are 30 feet tall, probably 10 feet thick, and soldiers patrolling on the walls or in the street are vigilant and well organised.

The market square is quiet and ordely. There's mostly local farmers, with some foreign merchants. You already see the red roof of the Juliver's Inn. 13 on the map

The town seems to you really quiet, the streets are clean and few people are out so far.

Mary casually observes the scene.

I expected it to be organized, but it sure is quiet outside.

True to her word however, with no more than 3 silver pieces left, Mary takes a look at the stalls.

Unless you advise we have more on us at this point, i can ditch some of the inventory if needed.

Meurasod heads down the road and towards the tavern. Upon entering the tavern, he closes the door with a little more force than necessary. "Mead, and a plate of whatever you got that's hot" he says loudly to no one in particular as he looks around for a vacant table.

It's ok, Mary, you can ditch a few things in your inventory

The Juliver Arms is managed and owned by halflings. The place looks cosy, and the plates are full.

Quickly, a roasted chicken with vegetables is on Meurasod, with a big mug of mead.

That's two silver pieces, sir! ask the server (another halfling..)

Zurka quickly follows behind the others and follows the dwarf into the Juliver Arms tavern. While he cannot hide a look of distaste at the small beings who have kept the common room too bright for his eyes, he steadfastly ignores the discomfort.

The mission Zurka. You are here to gain entrance to the Spire. Nothing else is of import.

Waving the server over he asks for the same plate Meurasod requested, though he swaps the mead for a blood red wine instead. Deducted 2 silver for the meal. Once settled in he eyes the others who came in with him, his eyes passing over the female witch and several of the others who entered at the same time he did.

Perhaps they have an interest in the Spire as well...it would be foolhardy to explore such a place alone. I need allies here.

Turning his scarf-covered eyes to the dwarf, he asks softly, "What brings you here, my friend? Was it tales of the Emerald Spire which drew you here? I hear it has never been explored completely." As he waits for a reply he also tries to see if anyone else takes interest in their conversation.

Mary came in probably last of the group, wanting to get a proper meal before she'd spend too much time at the merchants' stalls.

Looking around for a free seat in the busy establishment, she spotted one near a raven-haired woman. Aralu.
"I hope you don't mind, there is little space, and the men around here give off a certain....'fragrance'.
Too much of an alcohol smell.

Mary orders chicken with bread and grape juice.
Wine is grape juice with alcohol...plausible right?

"What brings you to this fort?"

Have a busy day and wake up to lots of activity! Yay!

Katara noticed most the group had migrated to one place in particular. It was as good a place as any to gather information by listening in. Following the group she would head in quietly and sitting at a table that let her hear most of the conversations around. Ordering food quietly she would put the silver on the table for them to take.

Her ears were trained around her. Then again they weren't trying to be quiet so it was a matter of just focusing on them.

Considering, as it is the week end, that Gorok will be there with you at the tavern.

A blonde woman, sitted close to your table, speaks to you. She wears a fitting dress, and a cloak with embroidered stars. In her late thirty, she carries herself with dignity and confidence. She looks at you, and smile.

I heard you were willing to go to the Emerald Spire, in search of fortune? This is interesting. You don't have to go that far, cause if we make a deal, I can make your fortune, or at least give it a good start. My name is Iliara, and I need special people for a special mission right into the Spire... And I pay well. But this mission isn't for the weak of hearts or noble-minded folks, be warned. You might get your hands dirty... Should I continue?

Map Innkeeper and storyteller. Day of 1st full moon.

Taking a sip from her drink before putting it down, Mary listens to this new face.

This day gets more interesting by the minute.
She makes an inviting gesture with an open hand.

"I haven't said anything about the Spire, but please, do continue with your proposal. It sounds interesting."

She turns to Mary

To put it simply, there are two people into the Spire who might be dead. But, I'm not sure. And I want to be sure. For reasons I won't tell, of course. So if some adventurers would be able to bring back some proof of these two people...untimely death, I would be happy to pay the aforementioned adventurers for their assistance in the matter. I need to leave the Fort very soon, so I can't take matters in my own hands.

HP: 12/22 | AC: 16 T: 12 FF: 14 | F: +4 R: +4 W: +0 | CMB: +4 CMD: 16 | Per: +4 Init: +2 |

Who was she talking to originally?

Raising an eyebrow at the woman as she waits for her food to be delivered. Looking over the dress and how she held herself. Possibly had money and could pay well. Looking for two people. If one was who she was looking for. It was possible to get a double payment. This would be to her liking. Sitting back and relaxing she would listen into the conversation seeing someone else join in the conversation.

'What an interesting day. A lost trail but the potential to make more. I could weigh my options. Each of these individuals will be unique but probably couldn't trust them. The question is the motivations. If you could figure out that, then you can know where you stand with them. Money isn't my only goal but it makes what I want easier.'

Looking at the halfling she would take the offered drink when she returned and nodded her thanks. Sitting back sipping it as she listened in.

To Zurka and Meurasold, as they mentioned the Spire.

Zurka looks up in surprise as the woman approaches them and studies her closely.

She seems to be of a noble class judging by her attire. Still not someone to be trifled with...or trusted for that matter.

As Iliara outlines her offer, he keeps silent for a moment pondering her words.

And she wants those two adventurers eliminated. Doubt she will be truthful with us here as to the reason. Very easy to get entangled in concerns not of your making if one is not careful. This mission does give us a reason to explore the Spire, which is all I need here.

As he looks around electing to see who else takes an interest in her offer. Seeing the two human females also listening in brings a nod of acknowledgement from him. I'll put a sum of money at the local temple of Abadar at your intention, with a precise description of the two men you will seek and a contract with your names on it. You'll have to bring their heads to the bank as a proof your part of the deal is done. Maybe they will be already dead in the Spire, so that could be easy money. Seeing the woman he encountered at the gate earlier, he nods in acknowledgement and waves the newcomers to have a seat. "Yes, we would need assistance here. The Spire is a dangerous place, even without dealing with those we seek. Perhaps introductions are in order here. I am Zurka. And you are?"

Shrugging and making a gesture with her head towards Zurka, hinting Alura to potentially follow.

Hidden underneath her hair, two small beady bird eyes looked over the scene. "Careful of strangers, isn't that your creed?"

"Hush, little one, let's just see what it is about."

"Mary, merely a traveler, but now very interested in this proposal's potential."

You're right, even if it was a lucky guess. They both are specialist wizards. Jharun's forte is in conjuration magic, he was able to call creatures from outer planes or to create objects out of nowhere, while Tiawak is an illusionnist, which speaks for itself even to the ignorant of the arcane. To the best of my knowledge, Jharun was the one who initiated the exploration of the Spire and the leader of the duo. I don't know if they were romantically linked, or even friends, but Tiawak was quite a beautiful woman. Both are, or were, mages of small power, no longer neophytes but unable to use the most advanced spells. Tiawak was a reputed linguist, and a decent liar, and Jharun was fond of many esoteric knowledges, as well as an historian. Neither was a particulary capable fighter. They were mostly good at hit-and-run operations, using deception or summoned monsters if things went badly. Are you satisfied with these informations?
