Medda and Ambrus Valsin discuss long into the night how the Society might help the Twinhorn following. By the morning they have concluded that while teleportation magic might take the Kellids and Pathfinders as far as Lastwall, Medda insists that Ivvora’s hilt has lost some of its spiritual strength since being stolen. She believes the only way to restore its power is to walk the same path that Ivvora took into the Twinhorn’s land after the Shining Crusade—and that path leads straight through the Hold of Belkzen, an unforgiving land controlled by orcs!

Society mages gather to transport small groups at a time to Lastwall, and from there, the convoy of Kellids, Pathfinders, and supply wagons set off north. For all their brutal reputation, the orcs have become somewhat more welcoming of caravans at the urging of Grask Uldeth, one of the strongest orc chieftains and the ruler of the de facto capital Urgir. Those who stop at the Table of Ralock can purchase safe passage in the form of special tokens from tribal representatives. It remains to be seen whether the Pathfinders can secure enough.

@Table GMs: You have three days to run Securing Passage on page 21, but stop before running Up the Flood Road.

Hadza gathers with the others, visibly tired after his battle with the partially-made creature. His eyes regain some of their light and intensity when the Venture Captain mentions heading north with the Twinhorn warriors, even if he still leans heavily on his pole-arm for support.

"I think that I should see the quartermaster before setting forth," he says as the gathered Pathfinders begin to disperse for the night.

Urgir, capital of Belkzen, land of the orcs, is a dusty city composed
of a discordant combination of crumbling dwarven architecture
and rickety shelters. Medda has asked that everyone try and
obtain tribal tokens, which allow safe passage through Belkzen
and protection from the orc tribes. She has purchased as many
tribal tokens as she can with gold but still needs more to have
enough for her following warriors and the Pathfinders.

This is a skill check encounter, you must impress and influence a representative of a tribe. Because of the days limits, I will show you each of the representatives and the checks needed. You only need one success, but for each orc, the group have only three chance. I still expect that we roleplay a bit of those encounters. You will also have some hidden malus or bonus depending of your actions.

Kahwen is more than pleased when their combat with the fleshy thing ends. He listens curiously to the conversation between Medda, Ambrus and Nigel. He likes Ambrus because he is a Venture Captain a she is beginning to like Medda because she seems brave and purposeful. Nigel, he likes less. The man seems far too worried about his silly museum. These sorts of things are meant to be in the world, not hidden away in a building.

He's very excited, but nervous in Urgir. Orcs have a certain reputation, after all.

Tengu also have a certain reputation so it is not long before Kahwen is approached by one of the orcs with a certain proposition.

A proposition he accepts because Tengu have a certain reputation for a reason. In Kahwen's case it is because he finds such propositions entertaining and challenging.

He is led to a certain place and told certain things to look for and left to it.

She hadn't been expecting to be accosted so thoroughly, but having been startled by the pile of papers and pens that had come flying at her, Liasna reacted reflexively to catch as many as possible before stooping to help pick up the mess.

A moment's examination revealed quite a few maps in the mix. Pausing in her clean up, she paused to see who, exactly, had dumped the lot on her.

After a brief conversation, she found herself, ah... helping. As much as someone like her could, anyways. Examining the maps alongside Gekgaro, she murmurs quietly, "Everlight, grant us aid," asking for guidance so she can more appropriately render aid.

"What do you think of this spot here?" she asks, eyeing a spot on the map. "It looks like it's got a lot of cover and you could probably put up tapestries or some blankets to help insulate the space."

★★★OVERSEER ANNOUNCEMENT★★★

Having traveled for more than a week through the harsh lands of Belkzen, the Twinhorn warriors grow excited as they come within a few days’ travel of their homeland.

As the sun dips behind the Smokespur mountains, the sound of drums start to echo off the rocky canyon walls, starting slowly at first, but quickly increasing in pace. Medda turns from her lead position in the caravan and shouts “Look out! Ambush!”

The drumming continues as a boulder hurtles from the mountain and lands on the lead wagon, sending splinters flying in all directions. Clouds of dust billow off the mountainside as dozens of orcs surge from the foothills and chant to the beat of the drums. Arrows and boulders begin to rain from the slopes.

Medda calls out, “Pathfinders, someone is willing to risk Uldeth’s ire by attacking us! I need some of you to meet their vanguard, others to guard the caravan, and a third group to take out their archers.”

@Table GMs: You have 11 days to run Up the Flood Road on page 22. Encounters D, E, F, and G are now accessible, but please stop before reaching Part 3.

Kahwen:
You will know that coyotes, much like their wolf cousins, are skilled at tripping up foes if they can sink their teeth into them.

(ie: they have a trip attack rider on their bite!)

Kahwen is the first to leap to the attack... perhaps a little too quickly, as he rushes his swing, and the coyote easily dodges away. Hadza goes a little more carefully on the advance, but puts a lot of force behind the blow, completely crushing the second animal.

Malvic goes for a ranged attack, using his arcane training to toss a small acidic ball at one of the coyotes, that unfortunately flies way wide.

Malvic, don't forget the firing into melee penalties... not that it matters on a 1, I suppose =)

Jadashi focuses his attention on the orc commanding them, and his verbal outlash seems to cause him to become visibly shaken! He commands his trained animals to attack, while he takes a cautious step away from Jadashi, to engage Kahwen on the far side of his coyote.

One of the canines bites at the tengu, put can't penetrate the armor. The other leaps inside the reach of Hadza's polearm, and sinks its teeth into the man's leg, taking his feet right out from under him! (3 damage to Hadza, and he is tripped!)

Seeing his close ally in danger Malvic steps between him and the coyote. He puts all of his body weight into the thrust of the rapier.

Hadza completely ignores the last coyote, as he climbs to his feet despite the fact the creature is sinking its teeth into his leg (3 more damage to Hadza). Instead, he instead launches a might swing at the orc commanding them, who seems far more worried about Jadashi on the far side. The polearm teaches him the error of his decision, as it caves in his skull and he drops without a word.

Liasna, unable to make out what is going on in front of her, steps forward to guide Malvic's attacks, only to realize how badly injured Kahwen is as the later calls for some aid. She then shifts her attention to the tengu, healing most of his damage in one use of the wand.

Malvic and Jadashi also try to help Kahwen, but by removing the remaining threats. Jadashi sinks an arrow into the nearby coyote, which gives Malvic the opening he needs to step in and finish it off with his rapier.

Current Status:
Kahwen (-1 hp), Hadza (-6 hp)

All around you, the attack on the caravan continues, and calls you to the next point of defense!

A number of ranged attackers are still active nearby, raining arrows down on the caravan, while the caravan itself still needs to be guarded as the orcs move to make off with the supplies. You also now find that your move on the vanguard of the attacking forces has left an opening that would allow you to move against some of the leadership, in behind.

You have 3 choices now! Ranged attackers, protecting the caravan, or going after the leadership! Though the last is likely to be a slightly bigger challenge.

"Thank you Friend Liasna, for your magic and thank you Friend Malvic for protecting us," Kahwen says to his companions as they provide him much needed assistance. He is quite pleased by the fact that he was not actually knocked out in the fight.

A fight that seems all but over. Only one coyote is left as he turns his attention back to their opponents and there is already a hammer coming at it.

He tenses, already guessing what the results are going to be and waiting for the fateful instant.

He turns away, though, looking for more opponents.

"Chiefs!" Kahwen exclaims, aiming his sword at the orcs who seem to be in charge. "Let us cut the head off this serpent, Fellows!"

Malvic nods at Kahwen with an awkward smile, "We are more effective if we all continue the fight. And you are a pleasant companion."

He gathers himself and checks on the others. Surveying the battle he decides his opinion the best path forward.

"If we can take out the leadership the others will falter. It could prove more challenging than these mutts but we are capable. Otherwise protecting the caravan is of importance to our goal." he says wary of the possibility of a very risky fight.

All the orcs seem to take heart from the power beat and the other three start to advance.

The first two pull out small bundles and hurl them at Kahwen and Malvic... as they spin through the air, they open up reveal that they are nets! Kahwen manages to step aside, but Malvic can not dodge in time and the net descends on his head, entangling him! The orc then grasp the rope connecting the net tightly, and starts to haul on it to keep the elf from escaping.

How nets work, for those not in the know!

Nets!:
A net is used to entangle enemies. When you throw a net, you make a ranged touch attack against your target. A net's maximum range is 10 feet. If you hit, the target is entangled. An entangled creature takes a –2 penalty on attack rolls and a –4 penalty on Dexterity, can move at only half speed, and cannot charge or run. If you control the trailing rope by succeeding on an opposed Strength check while holding it, the entangled creature can move only within the limits that the rope allows. If the entangled creature attempts to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check with a DC of 15 + the spell's level or be unable to cast the spell.

An entangled creature can escape with a DC 20 Escape Artist check (a full-round action). The net has 5 hit points and can be burst with a DC 25 Strength check (also a full-round action). A net is useful only against creatures within one size category of you.

Malvic, you can not 5' while entangled. And the one that was beside you, Hadza just toasted =)

You can move at half speed, but if you want to move away from the orcs you'd have to win an opposed strength check, as one has you tethered with the net. Moving towards the orcs though, that you can do without a check... so you reach out to touch yellow or blue if you move that way. (Yellow is the one that has you in its net)

Hadza, the precise strike only applies if the person flanking them with you also activated it... at present only Kahwen mentioned doing so it. Won't matter, as you'll paste green anyway =)

I think you can cast the spell where you are then move (without 5 foot stepping) adjacent to the yellow guy because Hadza downed the guy who was adjacent to you with a sap...that's what it looks like to me, anyway.

Ah, so he did! missed that =)

Hadza moves around to flank quickly, swinging his polearm in a mighty sweep that crushes the orc trying to sap Malvic in the side of the chest. You hear bones snap as that orc collapses to the ground!

Malvic, finding himself encased in the crude fibers of the orc's net manages to keep his head enough to speak an arcane spell, then instead of resisting his captor's pull, he lets the orc pull him in closer. One hand reaches through the mesh of the net, and presses against the orcs chest. There is a loud zap sound, and the orc goes flying back like he was suddenly struck. He hits the ground, smoking slightly with little electrical trails running along his limbs, smelling of ozone, and no longer moving.

Heartened by his companions efforts, Kahwen ducks around behind the orc that tried to entrap him, and slashes him with a low sweeping arc, scoring a huge wound across the surprised orc's abdomen. He falls to his knees with a strangled yelp... then tips over onto his face motionless in the dirt.
