@Algar - Does he have any connection to the actual Church of Gorum or has he just assumed divine guidance? Also, how does his lawyer-schooling reconcile with his martial training?

DM:

No actual connection to the church, it was divine guidance

It is something for him to do while not on adventure or fighting.
After all in Cheliax laws are rather important and to him it is just a interesting way to battle with opposing side.

Arguments
Counter arguments
Debate
Witness cross examination

it it much like a sword play duel
you attack, i try to parry and counter attack, you feign, i bluff, you provoque with rule number 1 , I reply with court ruling n25 etc...

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@Black Addie, I would be pretty amenable to a Hedge Witch. So Black Addie is essentially a squatter that lives off of selling herbs and charity?

Yes... But in return she sees to the needs of the downtrodden residents as a healer and protector, sort of like the Witches of Discworld: "The role of witches has been defined as 'smoothing out life's humps and bumps,' and 'helping people when life's on the edge,' and they take this obligation seriously. They also never ask for anything in return. There are, however, ways of not asking for anything in return, (of course.)"

To further paraphrase, "It is considered lucky to have a witch in your community, it is especially lucky if the witch is well-provided for."

leinathan:

I have updated the stats to 23 points with the additional 3 points going to Con to raise it to a 14. Weapon Finesse has been added as a bonus feat. Bonus skill point will go to Perform (sing).

@Ichiro - Why was his mother in the Inner Sea region instead of Minkai performing?

Sae Tanizaki was a promising young opera singer in Kasei. She was "discovered" by agents of Mayor Arvanxi, always on the lookout for exotic opera talent to bring to Westcrown. With the increasing restrictions on life in Kasei imposed by the Jade Regent, Sae took advantage of the opportunity for an advantageous patronage in Westcrown and made the long journey over the Crown of the World.

@Endiku - The Dervish of Dawn is a fighter archetype. You may certainly take it if you take fighter levels. EDIT: I found the bard archetype, nevermind. You may not use them both, as they overlap with different abilities granted. Also, the Dervish Dance feat only applies to attacks with scimitars. Are you prepared to defend yourself against fresh fruit if necessary? What would you do if someone came at you with a raspberry?
On to serious questions.
How did the palaadin slay anybody himself after weeks of brutality and torture, while presumably unarmed and unarmored?

@Vandrake - How would your character feel if confronted with Hellknights or told to act against them?

@Morgryym - Alright I just really need to confirm what's going on in your backstory. Raised by two half-orc assassins, you were sent in with the male half-orc to assassinate a wizard. This wizard turned out to be a fiend, and the male half-orc died to an AoO because he didnt notice there was a guy standing right next to him. The fiend gave you magic powers, and then spared you, in exchange for a favor later. The favor is...???

@Jessnen - Why did they think your barbarian committed the crime, and why wasn't proof necessary?

@Algar - I guess what I should be asking is why such a huge man, not that much more intelligent or logical than average, would choose law school among all professions to train in, and then would go to battle for Gorum.

Getting close to narrowing things down a bit, or picking a person or two.

To me a fiend would be someone that likes to manipulate or trick other creatures into doing things for them, they don't appreciate it the other way around. Until a number of people learned how to subdue them and bind them into a mortal form which reduces their powers significantly and in turn these people would use them as "slaves" or as someone to do their dirty work for them. The fiend knew that he wasn't capable of defeating the soldiers on his own so he decided to "lend" it to Morgrrym (which at that time was full of anger for the loss of his family) cause the fiend knew that anger would fuel it more.

The male half-orc did die. They were told that they need to kill the wizard but little did they know that they were being setup by their higher ups for they already know a lot about the scheme of things and they need to be discarded. In a sense, both of them wanted to take their revenge on these nobles and higher ranking officials. Thus connecting the trait diabolist raised.

Dark Archive

any answer on my question? kind of waiting to finish the submission.

Leinathan: I'm still working on background and such. I'm looking to figure out an appropriate area of the town for him to be in and how much background I need to add in.

Sorry, Kara. Yes, you begin with scribe scroll, and yes you can begin with scrolls that you've scribed, but doesnt it cost money?

yes I just use what I have in starting gold. it isn't much for level 0 or level 1 spells.

Can't use them both, no problem. I more meant home-brewing by taking some features from one archetype and putting them in a second, but eh no big deal.

Sorry, your fruit-related comments have me confused. Are you saying that Dervish Dance gives you bonuses when someone attacks you with a Scimitar? Or are you concluding that Dervish Dance only allows you to use Dex for Scimitar attack and damage rolls?
The Paladin used Lay on Hands, grabbed an implement they were using to torture him and slew them all while Enkidu fought with one of them and distracted the rest. He was high-level enough to only need a distraction to escape.

He's actually making an excellent reference to an excellent episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus, but yes, I believe the idea of the reference was aimed at the specialization into scimitars, and making sure you were aware of the limitations of your choices.

leinathan wrote:
@Jessnen - Why did they think your barbarian committed the crime, and why wasn't proof necessary?

Jess wasn't aware at the time of what exactly was happening, and to this day doesn't completely understand what happened. When he was arrested, he was alone at the bar, humming a tune to himself. When he queried the guards, he received little information. All that he gathered was through the jibes at him being a petty thief, the stolen goods they found hidden in his room at the academy, and a single name of a noble house. Jess recognized this name as one of the family names of a friend from the academy, but couldn't conceive how that could be more than coincidence (Gaiza and he were fast friends, and had helped each other out of a number of sticky spots). He spent his years wondering, and still has no definite answer. Perhaps he needs to re-evaluate how he chooses friends, or maybe he is just the unlucky scapegoat of something bigger. Regardless, he feels betrayed, angry, and resentful of this city, and would love to see the crime and injustice fall to pieces.

Ausk is obviously in a lower class job, and he has seen many of the less savory elements of the world, and he has easily seen that humanity has as many vermin as the creatures that take the word as their name. He has begun to build a reputation, as one to call when something nasty is in the gutters and needs to go. What less know is that he has begun to grow a natural talent for the world in which he has sought to limit population size.

It was many years ago that he came to the city. His mother is long dead, falling pray to one of the diseased creatures that the half-Orc now hunts and traps. His father was some sort of street shaman and he met his end a few years ago to some wandering diabolists on a power trip (some would call it slumming).

Ausk is now trying to get himself a steady income and a reputation of some sort to cover his delving into the divine hunter role of his ancestors. Only the divine hunters of the natural world, he believes, will be able to stem the evil that is coming to this town.

Not sure where he'll live yet.

Introducing Veil Longstride

Character concept: Veil is an elf cleric 1, though he is a fighter and not a focused healer. After level 1, Veil will take levels in Monk (manuever master) specializing in disarm. In combat, since Veil always act in a surprise round, the idea is for Veil to move ahead of the party (40 spd) and disarm the combatants.

background:

Early timeline:
Early Age: Raised in Magnimar as a acolyte of Sinashakti
Age 15: Started working as a missionary and messenger, running messages between cities and speading Sinashakti
Age 17: Delivered messages to a Monastery and stayed to train with the monks , never really picked up the abilities, but continues to work the forms
Age 26: Traveled to a the Westcrown and stayed to work as an inner city messenger
---

I was in Westcrown for barely two days before I realized I needed to do more message running and less spreading of Sinashakti. I came to Westcrown because I thought the void of Aroden would mean room for a better diety; I was wrong. Day two in Westcrown saw me running from the patrol on no charges at all other than denouncing Asmodeus. I was never worried that they would catch me, I am much faster than they are, but I got the message well enough. It was time to switch over to just running messages.

The message running went well enough, a city as large as Westcrown had plenty of need to for a quick messaging service. The message to the dead man tripped me up though. I was given a high priority message to be delivered right away, with a gold piece added on as a tip. I went straight to the residence to find the local guard investigating the house, and the body of the recipient lying on the steps. The situation had never happened before so I did what was natural for me, ran away. I made it a safe distance away and slowed. I saw a torch burning on the outside of an inn, pulling and the letter and pushing it towards the torch. The curiosity struck at the last second and I pulled it away. I ducked into the inn, opened up the letter and started to read.

It was an invitation to a meeting of a group called Taishan set for the next night. I decided I would see what was up.

---

I scoped out the house for a while, watching the conspicuous guard try to be inconspicuous. after about fifteen minutes, the guard went inside and I hurried over to the door. I listened for a moment to make sure no one was right on the other side and then activated the door sight ability the monks of Sinashakti had taught me. Inside the house was a large meeting room. A teifling stood and paced at the front of several travelers. The travelers seemed to be enrapt with the words the teifling was saying. They were so enrapt that they failed to notice the cloaked figured approaching behind each of them. The teifling ended with a flourish, and the faces of the travelers were shocked. The feeling lasted only seconds before each of them were bludgeoned on the back of the head. I gasped, lost concentration and lost sight into the room. I bolted, getting away as fast as I could.

---

I never went back to the house, or started any of the travelers again, but the lesson I should have learned was lost on me. With a quick Sun Metal spell to heat up my blade I can slit open the letter, keep the seal intact, and read through the letter, and put it back with no one ever noticing. I believe it is for good, because maybe I can prevent another occurrence like the one my dead client would have faced.

I look forward to your review.

@Algar - I guess what I should be asking is why such a huge man, not that much more intelligent or logical than average, would choose law school among all professions to train in, and then would go to battle for Gorum.

---
short answer because i was a decent paid job after all. yes he isn't the best at it, yes he is only decent, yes it isn't really what he liked or wanted to do but it was first first real job (and he had no idea what else to do at the time.) (its the same like when parents or friends have an idea for you and you don't have any for yourself when you are 18) and it finance his food, his weapon and armor and some swordplay training.

then he eventually was able to leave this line of work and adventure with Arman

Ok - here's the concept. I'll create an alias if you dig it.

Thanks for the consideration!

Aimee Wigdahl Background:

Everyone was a crook, waiting to deceive or steal; or so Aimee's father had taught her.

Her father served as a cleric in the church of Abadar, though in reality, he was little more than a glorified banker. He possessed a keen eye for coin, but little divine capability.

Aimee, however, was different. She had little interest in the business dealings of the church, preferring instead the more hands-on activities the clergy required. As she came into adulthood, she trained to become an Inquisitor of the church, serving as a loyal and dedicated collector of taxes and unpaid debts.

Adept at reading people and convincing them to hand over their goods, she had little need to rely on her battle prowess. Despite this fact, she trained with her longbow daily, developing no small amount of skill with the weapon.

Her father grew more paranoid as he grew older, always certain that someone was out to cheat him. Of what, it was unclear, but he always spoke - in hushed tones - of forces colluding together to rob him. And one day, his paranoia was realized. He was arrested by a group of Hellknights as he was returning home from work. All inquiries into the nature of his arrest and the details of his release were rebuffed - Aimee could discover nothing and knew nothing.

That was three years ago, and though Aimee has continued in her service to the church, she has grown increasingly paranoid herself and has become slightly jaded against the laws of Westcrown. Unsure whether her father is alive or dead, she has become increasingly desperate to uncover his fate. Perhaps even desperate enough even to join with a rogue group of rebels.

Aimee's Stats:

Note: I still need to finish buying gear and I'm not certain about the extra ability points.

@Vandrake - How would your character feel if confronted with Hellknights or told to act against them?

It would depend. He works undercover. It is important he maintain his cover. If he was on an important job, he might outright help kill them if they stood in the way. He would not tell anyone in the church he did so. If he were just wandering about with a group and it wasn't necessary to kill them, he might talk his way past them. If one of the party members tried to start a fight with them, he would try to calm the situation down. If he was forced to fight, he may at times purposefully miss them in combat so as not to have their blood on his hands. He's an Inquisitor, so he operates at times outside the common laws to get the job done.

I'm not sure how you would handle it. He may even take a Hell Knight off to the side and use the Inquisitor card. Say something like, "You are a Hell Knight. I am an Inquisitor. You will not impede me or the people I travel with. Do you understand?" Use the whole "I'm the secret police and I'm on the job" card. That would definitely be a fun situation to roleplay.

He would also cite the law using Profession (Secret Police) that would apply in a given situation. I'm sure I'd have to make it up or run it by you first. He would be knowledgeabl on legal matters and use that knowledge to strengthen his bluffs and diplomatic relations.

Greetings. I played breifly in a Council of Thieves game and enjoyed it for as far as I got. However, my time in that game ended early and I've been looking for a chance to play it again.

Far as I know, the DM of that game altered the path considerably and as such, I have no idea what was his concoction and what was Adventure Path.

I am no longer in any other games and my time is freed up. So I wanted to see if I could get in the one.

I have my story laid out in my profile. Let me know if it needs adjusting.

Alias is complete more or less, let me know if there are any more questions!

Updated my sheet to a final. Decided to lower wisdom a bit and bump the Dex and Str a little, but not much. Looks less min-maxed now. Fixed the alignment, which was supposed to be CG but was CN. The extra skill point will be going into Craft (Clothing) because Shannon tailors all of his own stage outfits (and would probably do the same if we all wanted to be masked and costumed heroes of Westcrown!) If you were wondering about the "Fangfile" being used as a weapon, no, it isn't the goblin weapon, it's really just a big nail file. Literally, the thing he uses to file his nails, weaponized a bit for defensive purposes. When he becomes a real adventurer, he'll pick up a real weapon, but the file will always be around. Maybe have it enchanted one day to do +1d6 damage to hangnails.

Roster Time! Looking at this, there are some gaps. HINT: If you haven't applied yet, applying in the gaps will reduce your competition. I've got a few more questions and will ask them in a next post.

Dotting for interest for now. Will have a concept soon, maybe a cavalier.

A couple more things.
To those of you wondering, please take the average amount of starting gold for your class.

@Endiku- I was making a reference. I meant to say that Dervish Dance applies only to scimitars.

@Kara- What are those Shadow Advocate people that you associate with? Would you use them as a resource?

@Jessnen- Was your "proper training" in combat or in trading? What would motivate him to get out of his rut of drinking himself into a stupor every night?

@Vandrake- What IS his mission and/or long-term goal? The goals of this campaign will have the PCs working with what are essentially enemies of the Asmodean regime, although not actively working against it (but rather working against the more immediate ruling class of Westcrown). Would your character act contrary?

I plan on building a true revolutionary!

Initial thought is rogue, may end up as an alchemist or sorcerer.

I should have my submission up tomorrow, thanks

they are a custom organization with no real significance. not any more valuable than a group of kids calling themselves a club. it is really a group of gnomes in hiding except that they share the same affinity toward shadow magic. they would not be used as a resource unless you wanted to include them. Once Kara begins the adventure they are nowhere to be found "so to speak"

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Maps Subscriber

I would throw out a tiefling infernal sorceror(ess) if that's not to cliche for Cheliax. My other thought was a LG Paladin of Abadar or Erastil, disinherited when the house of Thrune took over, now bent on restoring law and order and the "rightful" monarchy.

Any preference?

No preference :) Whichever you think is the better concept.

Dark Archive

I would recommend any NON-arcane character...

I'm just sayin'

Any more questions for me, leinathan? Anything I should do to improve or strengthen?

Gotcha. I'll drop out then, have a good game. And I do get the Monty Python reference, but since my question was about attacking others, a quote about others attacking me was a little confusing.

I've done some changes gm, everything except the name and race has been thrown out. Tell me whether or not you like it.

I agree with Kyra. A cleric or oracle or druid would not go unwanted.

Ausk, I just need more specificity from your background. I implied that you weren't done with it.

Zeherin, the basic problems with your character are still present, just re-skinned. Your character is played off as someone with great power and skill and influence. In reality he should have none of these things.

leinathan wrote:
@Jessnen- Was your "proper training" in combat or in trading? What would motivate him to get out of his rut of drinking himself into a stupor every night?

While Jess grew up around traders and learned a few tricks of the trade, he never really took an interest, and has since forgetten most everything about it. His real training, and more importantly the things that stick with him through his years in prison, are in combat. However, while he still uses bits and pieces of this training (combat know-how, reaction time, weapon handling, etc.), he prefers to avoid most of it, as it reminds him of the life he intended to leave. Hence, he shirks armor and favors unconventional weapons.

As far as his rut of drinking, he mostly just needs to be woken up. His rage stems from the injustices done to him, and his own past. Something from the outside world that resonates with him personally would be the sort of thing to get his attention, and something he could do something about would be the kind of wake-up call he'd need to get up and fight for a cause. It could be someone framed for something, it could be a guard from the old academy that picks a fight with him, it could be a speech given about the mistreatment of the citizens, or it could even be the witnessing of a crime that he could act against. Really, he needs something that pulls his thoughts away from himself and out to the world around him. Jess is a good person, and wants to help if he can, but is lost along his path on how to do so, and feels useless in his older age (middle aged, already accounted for standard bonuses and penalties).

leinathan: I'm definitely working out more. Partly I'm just drawing a blank on some things, but I'm going to read over the guide again to get more specificity. I'm about half out of it, so pardon me asking this stupid question: what areas really need the most specificity?

The organization isn't powerful itself, it seeks to become powerful but it is not at this point in time a major power in westcrown. They could become powerful if given time to mature, but they are not in essense a faction with unlimited power or great power in Westcrown. Plus a motley band of rogues, disgraced nobles(the families has disowned them so no resources from them) and other "unsavory" people is not a major source of power. It can become a major power if you want it to or you can exterminate them all as a part of the story.

Jessnen, I dunno if you have the points to get those stats with 23 points.

13 (-1 age) [12 DEX] - 3 pts
16 (-1 age) [15 CON] - 10 pts
11 (+1 age) [12 INT] - 1 pt
14 (+1 age) [15 WIS] - 5 pts
7 (+1 age) [8 CHA] - -4 pts
_______
28 pts

@Ausk - What is his day job? Also, does he hunt actual vermin or corrupt humanoids? If humanoids, is he essentially an assassin, or did you want to infer something different? Also, what "divine hunter role" of your ancestors? What are the "divine hunters of the natural world" that you refer to?

His day job would be to hunt the actual vermin. He's picked up a skill at
hunting corrupt humanoids, but he hasn't yet had a real chance to put it into practice. It's been a private sort of study, as he's watched a number of street fights. Seeing where you hit to hurt someone and where to hit to kill.
If he were approached, he'd not be an assassin, because he feels those sorts are out for whoever can pay the money, rather than making the choice that is the best for the city and the world.

As far as the divine hunter? For him, they're druids and specifically rangers. For him, he sees them more a part of the natural world than things like magi or alchemists, who are either just seekers of dangerous knowledge or those who try to mimic the natural world in a non-conventional (and a way that he's not really developed an opinion on).

I see that, as time goes on, he would become a hunter of the corrupt, as he sees that there is actually a proper change he can make in the world.

I made some adjustments to my specs adding armor. I am not going to add gear yet until we get into the game and I am able to ascertain best what would be needed. Besides, Terry travels light anyways.

Also added some fun little background themes and some strange quirks for flavor. Thus we have Creepy Terry Torok. Also explains his negative diplomacy and charisma.

Are you thinking you're going to choose tonight, or should us hopefuls check back in the morning? Regardless, thanks for your consideration and hard work, it's a lot to sift through choosing out of two dozen applicants! Good luck deciding!

I didn't realize that was the campaign. I read the background on Westcrown and assumed we were going against the Council of Thieves. My long-term mission would be to destroy the Council of Thieves as they are criminals violating the law. His basic duty is the protection of Westcrown, keeping the law, and maintaining the rule of Asmodeus in the city.

If the Council of Thieves was a rebel organization, his mission would be to get every single name of the people in their organization (especially the leaders), figure out their plan, and set them up for destruction. His inquisition is heresy, meaning he tracks down heretics as well as criminals.

If we were going against a former Asmodean worshipper with a different agenda than the church. That would be ideal for this campaign. His mission would be to destroy that former worshipper and punish them for defying Asmodeus's church.

If the leadership of Westcrown is threatened by entire plot that is attempting to cause disorder and war in Westcrown, then Vandrake's mission is to stop that kind of disruption in Westcrown even if it means working with people that don't worship Asmodeus.

I guess since I don't know the campaign, I can't say if Asmodeus's agenda would be served by destroying the enemies in Council of Thieves. If Asmodeus and his rule would be pleased by the destruction of the antagonists in Council of Thieves, then that his his mission.

I am passing on a submission. I have a few great ideas in my head, but I think one more AP would be too much to commit to. Looks like fun, you don't see this one come up often.

Good luck to all!

I'm trying to choose tonight, but it's more difficult than I initially thought it would be.
I'm in no rush to get posts once I've chosen, though, so feel free to check whenever.

Hey, hey! I finally got time to make an application. Give me ten minutes and I'll have a concept up for you to check out.

Celia Anetta Azurra is a cleric of Iomedae, the goddess of Valor, and she looks the part. A long-legged pale-skinned beauty, rough around the edges in scale mail, Celia appears more warrior than woman. A sturdy commoner's longsword hangs from her hip, and the holy symbol of Iomedae hangs around her neck. A tattoo of a sword curls its way across the left side of her face, hilt and handle half-encircling a concerned eye.

In all truthfulness, life could have gone a very different way for Celia. She had lived in Westcrown her entire life and had followed the tenets of Asmodeus to their most holy written word. Her family were all devout Asmodeans and each one of them paid their dues to the House Thrune, that lived in far away Egorian so detatched from what was happening in the old capitol of the empire. Nothing was bad; everything was good. If things continued as they were, she would live and die a washer woman in the Parego Dospera like her mother and grandmother before her.

And then the priest came, and threw his talk of freedom and valor and hope around. Celia made the mistake of finding herself invigorated by his words-- by his teachings of honor, glory, law and sacrifice. If it weren't for the longsword on his hip and the winged sword on his neck, Celia would have guessed he was a true Asmodean. But he worshipped a different god-- a goddess named Iomedae. He had come to Cheliax to find crusaders to travel to the Worldwound, and Celia found herself at his sermons... and then found herself dreaming of fighting demons on the plains of Sarkoris. The man invigorated her with his words. She met with the priest many times to speak on the nature of religon and to debate the merits of law and good themselves. Soon, she became a practiced theologian and even learned her way around the art of swordsmanship with the priest as her mentor. Celia couldn't wait for him to take her away from Westcrown.

That would never happen.

The priest was a revolutionary and took his time to settle roots in before he began his work. Whatever it was, it didn't last long, and Celia never learned what he had done. The Hellknights came for her one night and took her to the Citadel. They tortured her for hours and spit her back into the street with the imprint of a blade across her face, a burn scar from the heated sword of an overzealous inquisitor. The priest disappeared completely. She never saw him again.

Since then, Celia has been less inclined to believe the Asmodean mantra. Her family, estranged from her after the event and too afraid to publically ask questions, stayed at arm's reach. With nowhere else to turn, Celia turned to what she had begun to believe in-- the rule of valor and Iomedae. She turned the old priest's lie into the truth, at least for herself. Tattooing a sword across her face to hide the pocked burns the Hellknights had put on her, Celia is prepared to bring about change in Westcrown any way she can-- if it's to overthrow the Hellknights, to end the night terrors, to dig out even a glimmer of hope... Celia's become the revolutionary, now, but perhaps her fate won't be the same as her mentor's.

There’s something very wrong with the world. Spouses were not meant to huddle at their windows hoping and fearing day after day that their loved ones returned from work safely. Parents were not meant to hush their children when questioned about what happened to their neighbors. Citizens were not meant to avert their eyes and hurry by as guardsmen beat old friends in the street. The people of Westcrown have suffered long enough! It’s time for a change. But how? You’ve heard rumors of bands of free-thinking individuals meeting after the citywide curfew. Perhaps they might share your ideals? You are quick to react to opportunity, both physically and mentally, and know that it is with sudden and swift action that many conflicts are best resolved. You gain a +1 trait bonus on Initiative checks, and if you act in a surprise round, you gain a +1 trait bonus on all attack rolls.

Well, I think I've got what I need, here...

Celia Azurra,

Shannon Rhys,

Jessnen Daersic,

Black Addie,

Please know that you are my party and please report to the discussion thread to get acquainted. We'll start soon, but its the nighttime for me and I'm tired out.

Damn. I was looking forward to roleplaying an undercover cop. That would have been fun. It would have been hard on a DM as well in a normal group concept.
