Where did Lord Casimir get Caltrops?
Newt moves back into the storage cave by Casimir. Retrieving a Alchemist Fire from his pack to have it at the ready.
Bowen, not wanting to abandon Anya, takes up a position next to her.
As everyone scurries for positioning the Ogre comes into the dim light just at the edge of Bec's torch range. The creature throws up a hand to block some of the light as it looks angrily at Bec before uttering the words "Food" Not seeing that Bec had his spear set against a charge the Ogre did just that.
As the Ogre ran toward Bec the spear caught him right in the chest and sank deep causing the Ogre to howl in pain as the blood spray covered Bec's face. Bec barely saw the ogre's great club come swinging toward his head but he ducked at the very last minute and the blow echoed off the cave wall.
ROUND ONE EVERYONE IS UP
Way to rock that Ogre Bec....... !!!!!!

Bec Corbin |
Bec, grinning at his success in stabbing the Ogre, attempts to repeat the feat by stabbing it again.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Damage: 2d8 + 12 ⇒ (7, 8) + 12 = 27
Edit, talk about some insane luck! Somehow a Level 1 Commoner just did 46 damage in 2 turns.
Bec Corbin |
Ah, my bad. I thought that the spear has 19-20 crit range, not X3. Sorry about that, I thought I had gotten some absurd luck for a second. Somehow I didn't piece together that I did double damage last time because of the brace, not the 19.
Anya'drea the Apprentice |
Zoinks! Nice damage, but didn't draw him deep enough. We are all still on the same side of it.... Ogre goes first, or was that miss his top of Init?
Anya steps out to where she can glimpse the brute (ogre, not Bec). This crooked stick may save our lives, yet... Please work!
Use Magic Device, magic missile: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12
dmg, magic missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
Of what use is planning. Mischa says to herself as she steps in to visual sight of the ogre and casts the spell she had been saving up all day for this occasion. Sleep Monster!
Casting Sleep To hit only ogre. Dc save Will 15. If Mischa can already see ogre she won't move from where she is. If she can't she will move north just enough to get in visual sight.
Lord Casimir La' Frond |
The running conversation had been if someone else had caltrops that Casimir would have "borrowed" them and tried to use them. Oh well.
Casimir waits a moment for the others to fire then gulps and puts his shield up before moving forward yelling at the Ogre, You worthless sack of fishguts, your cowardly hide is going to look good on my wall!
Go full defense and move in front of Bec H,11.
Current AC is 23 due to total defense.
Bowen Cantell |
I am truly sorry guys... Work pounced and raked me this week, all in one... Honestly, my apologies.
In any case I thought we were going to draw him to the intersection - where he is now, he can kill each one of us one at a time.
Bowen takes up a position in the intersection, loosing an arrow from his bow at the gigantic creature - "Damn! This doesn't look good"
Moving to K:12. Firing an arrow at the ogre.
Longbow Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

ROUND ONE RESULTS (Final)
Newt will begin to head north to get within range of using the achemist fire if necessary.
Double move to J10 right behind Bec.
Bowen takes up a position in the intersection, loosing an arrow from his bow at the gigantic creature. The arrow strikes its target but does not penetrate the ogre's studded leather armor. But the arrow does not break so at least it will be retrievable if he lives through this Bowen thinks to himself.
Anya steps out to where she can glimpse the brute (ogre, not Bec). This crooked stick may save our lives, yet... Please work! she thinks to herself However the crooked stick fails to function this time.
Mischa steps in to visual sight of the ogre, she can barely get a glimpse of the brute from her current position but it should be enough as she casts the spell she had been saving up all day for this occasion. Sleep Monster" she cries out as she drops a handful of rose petals to the ground from her spell pouch.
The Ogre suddenly stops in his tracks, yawns and falls to the ground and with a loud sound he begins snoring.
WE ARE OUT OF INITIATIVE

Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
Mischa takes a deep breath to mask the relief she feels at her spell working as expected. Hold for now.
We have a minute till the ogre wakes. He seems heavily wounded. Perhaps we can get some answers from him when he stirs. There was something behind his increased aggression.
How long would it take for Mischa to get to the ogre and take 10 on a Heal check to see how close to death the ogre is? Taking 10 would get her to 19
Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
Mischa shrugs. Killing it would serve to restore balance to the nature of this area. However there is much to learn about what it was doing here. As well it might help us find the abducted villagers faster. I do not believe we have the means to restrain it but we could take its club away. Additionally we can stand back and take it out from range if it proves hostile upon waking.
Bec Corbin |
Bec, still stunned at their apparent triumph against the beast, walks closer to observe it and make sure it won't immediately wake up.
I say we kill it now. If it wakes up, we may not be able to take it out twice.
Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
Mischa makes a wry face. It appears that the ogre is far from dead despite young Bec's fine work. I take back my initial opinion. It might be too much for us to handle when it wakes. she steps back from her examination. We should take away its club to be safe before we administer the killing blows
Lord Casimir La' Frond |
Bec, Bowell, and I will all strike it when we end this beast. Bec we will count to three and hit it as hard as you can. The rest of you be ready in case we don't kill it.
Casimir will strike right after Bec/Bowell. Casimir puts away his shield and grasps his blade in both hands and nods to Bec and Bowell.
Some of you may not want to see this...one...two...three!
1d20 ⇒ 9 damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 didn't roll a 1.
If it is a coup double damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
If we can get Bowen with his axe to hit as well that would be great, can't Bowen stand in front of Bec since Bec has reach to get three hits in?
Mischa picks up the club and drags it away from the ogre. 20 feet back from the monster she readies her bow in case ranged attacks are needed to end the beast's life.
Newt, Anya, we may need to attack as well. be ready
Bowen Cantell |
"This is what we are here for - I will not risk this beast hurting anyone else" - Bowen speaks determined, dropping his bow and drawing the axe while moving closer to the fallen form of the ogre.
I am ready when you guys are.
Waiting for the others to get in place, he swings hard.
CDG damage: 3d8 + 9 ⇒ (1, 5, 7) + 9 = 22
+ a DC32 Fortitude Save from the Ogre. That's my part - now up to you guys. Just a clarification, Bowen will not rush, he will wait until all are ready to strike, unless it seems to him it is taking too long. In that case, he strikes :D

After deciding what must be done, Bec is first to stand over the sleeping ogre, he raises his spear high above his head and brings it down mightily into the chest of the sleeping giant. The ogre's eyes flick open instantly as his body begins to convulse as it goes into cardiac arrest. It flops for a few moments before stopping. The ogre lay dead, his eyes open and still fixated on Bec as if in utter disbelief.
A quick search of the ogre's body turns up a medium sized greatclub, a large sized javelin, and a large size set of studded leather armor.
I have kind of regrouped everyone on the map so you can go from there. Good Job everyone.

Bec's torch will go out at 1:05pm
Beetle Glands will expire in 5 days.
Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
Yeah good job guys. Not even one scratch
Mischa does a heal check on the wolf at Anya's request to see if it can be stablizied. Taking 10 on Heal for 19 and if she can she will cast stabilize on the poor creature.
Well done young Bec. Like the ogre slayers from the tales. Mischa praises Bec's spearwork. Though... you did have help from a witch among others. she adds sardonically.
Turning away she says We can perhaps move faster now in searching this lair. Though let us still be cautious. Newt if you could resume your stealthy scouting while using the Beetle glands and we will follow you.
Lord Casimir La' Frond |
Casimir stands there feeling rather useless...and a little disappointed he was not able to prove his worth to the group and the town.
Mischa, if not for your powerful magic we would have had to fight this monster...and possibly died fighting. In a way we owe you our lives. It will not be forgotten.
Lead the way Newt.
bwatford |
After Mischa checks the wolf and confirms it has passed the group gives the go ahead for Newt to move further.
Newt reloads his crossbow and says "Well that was sure easier than I thought, lets move north where the ogre came from."
With that he moves off to explore the northern cave...
This immense chamber is at least 40 feet by 60 feet with a 20 feet high ceiling. With the low light of the beetle gland Newt can only make out the central portion. To the east is a pile of furs. Situated along the north wall is a huge iron-bound chest about 10 feet long. To the west is a battered wooden table and a smooth stone for a chair nearby.
On the table is what looks to be a half eaten platter of mutton and a empty turned over pewter flagon.
Newt calls back to the group "I think its clear, need more light up here, this place is massive. Also I got dibs on this chest." he snickers. The gnome is obviously being more careless with all the noise than he should be but hey we just killed an ogre. What could possibly be worse than that.

Bowen Cantell |
As they finish up the ogre, Bowen rests his axe against the wall, ripping a piece of cloth from the slain one, and using it to clean the weapon from the blood and gore - "Good thing no one thinks the axe had any effect on finishing up the beast" - he grumbles after he is satisfied with the cleaning task, picking up the pace after the others into the large chamber.
He does stop by the wolf, eyeing it with some suspicion, then relaxes some after he confirms it is indeed dead - suddenly remembering something he doubles back again to the ogre corpse, and hacks its head off - "Guess we'll need some proof to make sure people believe us" - he shrugs, throwing the head into a sack, and then getting back to the others.

It's a good idea for back up if they don't believe our word on the matter. Once we finish making sure there are no other threats we can return these goods to their owners.
In the larger cave he walks over to Newt and whispers, Brave one, please keep in mind their could be other threats in this place...we should still keep our wits, and our lives about us.
bwatford |
Bowen stuffs the ogre head in his pack, it barely fits.
Newt listens to Casimir's words and then says "I'll be sure to take that under advisement as soon as Bec stops staring off into space and brings some better light up here."
With that Newt moves over to check the chest for traps, taking 20 to be thoroughly careful. Newt doesn't find any traps but the large wooden chest is locked with a huge padlock.
Newt gets out his tools and goes to work (Taking 10). He soon has the padlock free and turns to Casimir. "Care to do the honors?" he says as he waits for a response. If Casimir comes to open the chest Newt will step back toward the group just in case he was wrong about the trap thing.

As Bec moves up to Newt, his torch illuminates most of the cavern now.
This immense chamber is at least 40 feet by 60 feet with a 20 feet high ceiling. To the east is a pile of furs. Situated along the north wall are an unused fire pit and an iron-bound chest about 10
feet long. To the west is a curtained-off alcove, with a battered wooden table and a smooth stone for a chair nearby. On the table is a half eaten platter of mutton.
As Casimir flips open the top of the chest the contents are clear.
The chest holds 1,555 sp in a loose mess. The chest also holds a spare suit of large studded leather armor, another medium greatclub, and six rocks.

Mischa The Witch of the Woods |
Careful, child Mischa says as she moves into the large room as well with the bow still at the ready.
Can't really call out coordinates as I can't really see map. Sorry about that. But Mischa will be right in the center of the room
