This room has a light source in the form of a metal plate bolted to the ceiling that glows with enough light to see clearly. Several glass cages stand on the floor, all of them partially smashed open. The remains of plants, rocks, and feeding dishes clutter the bottom of the cages and suggest they once housed living specimens. A long table lines the southern wall.
Zeroks |
Zeroks feels a sense of unease at the sight of the cages, he closes the door and quietly slips back to the group.
"Found some cages that were smashed open," he tells them. "We probably have some unfriendly and hungry guests laying in wait. I'm thinking it might be a better idea to stick together from now on. I don't see us avoiding any more fights."
Unless someone disagrees I think we should move together to the next area.
Voleryn |
"As you propose, though I would like to hope that not everything here is our enemy. By cages you mean animals, or beasts, rather than for humanoids?"
Ready to move when everyone else is
Zeroks |
"I really think you're both missing the point. They were able to break out of a cage with brute force. That's neither something nor someone I want to meet. So I say we go to the next room and forget about the cages. If we find their occupants, I figure we'll deal with them one way or another."
Reishi |
"Whoever we come across, we will deal with. Hopefully there are more like us just trying to get to freedom. I'm ready to move on if the rest of you are." Reishi puts his lute away, dons his pack and draws his sword. "Hey Kag, we could use some rope to tie up the armor and bring it along if you don't want to leave it behind."
Zeroks |
Zeroks waits for the others, and moves only slightly ahead of everyone. He decides to forego the last room he saw with the cages. Tickle senses Zerok's worry and nuzzles into his master's side. The rogue pets his furry companion and then checks the next door for any traps.

This elongated, octagon-shaped chamber holds several glass cases, each big enough to contain a large dog or halfling. A solitary workbench rests on the floor to the south with two unusual diagrams affixed to the wall above it.
DM Slyness |
Kag & Voleryn: Walking through the room, the two of you see that each case houses some form of ooze. On the bench is an organized stack of papers and several vials. The diagrams above the workbench represent scientific illustrations identifying two uniquely different creatures. One is represented as a translucent slime with two protruding pseudopods; the other diagram resembles a roughly square, backpack-sized glob of gray-green sludge and twisting fungal growths. The writing on the diagrams and the papers is recognizable as the same language that you saw on the lowest level.
As you are inspecting the workbench, a tiny robotic creature scuttles out from beneath the bench and uses its plasma torch to shatter one of the cases, releasing one of the oozes.
Voleryn |
"I swear this whole place just wants to kill us. Hit the metal creature, we don't need it opening the rest of the cases."
Ray of Frost: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 cold dmg: 1d8 ⇒ 8 (and -10ft move)
DM Slyness |
As soon as the case breaks, the tiny robotic creature scurries for the door. As it does, Voleryn's spell hits it, well, right under it's plasma torch tail, and that does slow it down.
Kag, Reishi, and Zeroks take shots at the ooze which quickly breaks a part into a swarm and tries to envelop Kag.
Andretta, operating on a hunch snags the little robot by the tail as it tries to sneak by.
It takes a couple of moments of avoiding hitting your dwarven companion, but eventually, the threat of the ooze is nullified.

Reishi |
Reishi begins to gingerly look around the room. "Could this place be any creepier?! Maybe I shouldn't ask that question. Andretta, lets pop it's little torch off and look at the mechanical rat." Reishi shakes his finger at it, "Not cool! Not cool!"
DM Slyness |
"Aww, but he's so cute," Andretta mildly objects.
A thin metallic voice says, "Do not hurt BR-N3R."
Reishi |
” BR-N3R, you set an ooze on us. Why? What do you know about this place? Seems to me you should be relieved of your torch however I’m willing to hear you out first.”
DM Slyness |
There are a few beeps and whirrs that somehow indicate a high stress level. "Killers on loose. Try to kill BR-N3R." Sensing an opening, the little robotic creature says, "BR-N3R know much. No hurt BR-N3R."
DM Slyness |
There are more beeps and whirrs as BR-N3R replies, "Many killers loose, big meteor storm. Lomrick have abducted. Many experiments, anomaly detected. Lomrick fascinated. Leave, gate top of prison."
Reishi |
"There is something endearing about this little guy. Hard to stay mad at him. BR-N3R, do you want to stay here or leave? Who is Lomrick? We can protect you if you can show us the way out. We are done with this place. What's the fastest way out?'
Come to think of it, I have a bunch of questions. Like where the hell are we? Underground? Can we put Mer back in his human body? Is the leader of this place still alive? Should we capture and interrogate him? Ahhh, one at a time.
DM Slyness |
Beeps and whirrs, "BR-N3R leave, not safe. Lomrick scientist for Celestial Helix Scions. Gate, top floor."
DM Slyness |
The little robot has no response to Kag's philosophical statement.
"Yes, in charge."
DM Slyness |
"Lomrick in facility, not know where. He find you, very interested in homeworld. Uncertain, damage assessment needed. You take BR-N3R to gate, assess."
Voleryn |
"Merilin can likely handle whatever he stumbled on. If he has seperated from us it is by his will to do so. Perhaps he felt his appetites returning and thought it better to be away from us?" Voleryn reasons, she had no ill will for Merilin, but did not relish the idea of trying to find him again.
Reishi |
"He's my responsibility. I agree he can handle himself, Vol. Have a feeling we will see him again soon. Going to leave the old bard a note letting him know where to find us in Elvish. Let's move on. BR-N3R, which direction to the gate?"
Reishi takes some chalk out and leaves Merilin a note on the wall. He will update the direction on the walls using chalk, in Elvish, as they go.
DM Slyness |
BR-N3R leads you to the shaft at the center of the complex. He scuttles up the wall, pressing the bottom of his body against one of the familiar glowing green locks. And then he waits an uncomfortably long time.
Finally, he makes his way to to the edge of the doorway, peering up and down the shaft. He beeps out, "Broken. Climb?"
