"Damn right I don't," Palo scowls. "We're stuck here but we still have to eat and keep Rav's hunks of junk running. And this wouldn't be the first time we've acted as guides...or hired muscle. So sure...you heard Rav, let's talk business."

"It'd definitely be nice to be back on the road again," Relas agrees. "Way back before we met Ravboom, Palo and I used to travel with trading caravans. Back then it was mainly because she worked as a scribe but she's got a knack for languages, too!"

Then he grins and flexes his newfound wings a bit. "But it sure didn't hurt to have a scary cat-beast and an angry, magic-wielding woman along as extra security, either. "

Relas looks at Rikkan, regarding him with an equal amount of curiosity. "Rav's right, you could say I come from Elsewhere...but I think you guys call it Nirvana. It's a really wonderful place but I don't mind leaving to come help Palo when she needs me."

I can see this is going to be...interesting, but we need their help. If those chag beetles are representative of the flora in this place we are gonna need all the muscle we can get!

After looking back to his friends Drancis nods slowly in reply as he addresses Palomia, "OK you and your friends are hired. As you might have guessed, we are not wealthy BUT we did manage to scavenge this cloak," he holds out the Cloak of Fangs recovered from the manticore in mid-air seemingly without effort. "Feel free to use it for whatever you wish, or sell it." As he drops the cloak on the table in between them he smiles enigmatically, "We will say more of where our final destination is, but for now our destination is the Baron of Merebec."

Rav looks the cloak over.

"Look magic, Palo have to confirm. Material's expensive." He hands the cloak to Palo. "Ok, that hire us, then we get equal share of loot." Rav touches his hat, and his face splits apart, as does his hat. Gears and arms whir and the bits of his face split open and pulled into the hat, revealing him to be a green skinned floppy eared and red eyed goblin. "That assume none of you racists." He says, showing off a wide grin full of shark sharp teeth. Touching the pouch on the side of his belt, it splits open, and gears and lever arms begin pushing parts of a long gun out of thin air together and forms a a long gun nearly as tall as he is. Taking it, he pats it. "On other hand, if are racists, can deal with that first." The mayo jar bomb is whisked away by the same gears and metal arms to vanish into the belt.

Locke is intrigued by the newcomers, Palo and her eidolon Relas seem like a powerful allies and the boy who had just turned out to be a goblin well... He seems odd, and quite possibly dangerous, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. "There are all sorts out here in the wide universe my friend. I have found myself becoming odder the more time I spend traveling between worlds, could I really even be considered a Half-Elf anymore? Whatever the case, I have no problem with your race." He offers a hand for Rav to shake.

Palo simply rolls her eyes as Rav drops his disguise. "He likes to be dramatic but don't pay him any mind." Then she stops. "Actually though, if you don't like goblins or can't at least tolerate them then now would be a good time to mosey on out."

As she pores over the offered cloak, she tries to recall if she's heard anything about this Baron of Merebec - or Merebec itself.

Rav looks at the proferred hand, and nods. "Rav good with words, handshakes like lies, everyone has one, can't trust it. If can't trust word, can't trust handshake." He says equitably. "Besides, not know where hand been, or what your nightly habits with hand are. Best not take chances." He grins, showing shark white teeth. "Rav best shot in world, no lie. Also best gunsmith. And best clocksmith." He hefts the gun, which emits a light whirring sound as he moves it around, as if there were hundreds of tiny gears inside, adjusting it's balance and aim. Then he taps a few places on his backpack strap in specific spots, and the backpack splits open, gears and lever arms manipulating things as it produces a keg of gunpowder and places it in his other hand. He hefts the 10lb keg in one hand like it was a pineapple, then holds it out again and the backpack takes it from him and the keg vanishes into the mesh of gears as the pack closes up. "Reasonable rates on equipment manufacture." He advertises.

Zoreck was mostly silent during the exchange with these newcomers, until Rav revealed he was a goblin. At that, the Numerian fliches, with his hand reflexively on the grip of his pistol. But then he relaxes as Palomia seems to be unconcerned at the goblin's presence.

"Believe me, Rav, you're not the oddest person we've been hanging around with of late. Nor the only other gunman... there was this pistol-packing spider lady we ran a job with the other day. But the two of you say you're from Golarion? And you also escaped from Garslit Station? Huh. We must have been held in two different sections of the same facility."

Rav then demonstrates his marksmanship. Zoreck nods in appreciation. "Not bad, shorty. Not bad at all. Kinda surprised you use a musket." He draws his own pistol to show it. "Betsy here lets me get up close and personal if I have to. And if I don't get a chance to reload..." he mimes clocking someone with the pistol butt.

He turns to Palomia. "I hail from Numeria, originally. A podunk village in the Sellen Hills. But the village elders didn't take kindly to Betsy, so I left. Me and Rikkan crossed paths, and decided that two had more chance of surviving than one, and we picked up Drancis and Locke along the way. We eventually made it all the way to Riddleport. We were checking some weird goings-on in a village south of there, when we stumbled across what seems like an invasion plot by the jagdeline. Not sure how, but we was captured and woke up on Garslit. We broke out of there and made it to Argosa. 'Course, nobody there ever heard of Golarion. We went through another gate to this place, hoping for some clues... but found out the hard way that gate was a one-way trip. And here we are."

Rav spins the cylinder on the side of the rifle. "Reload easy, pop open, shove bullets in, flick close." He demonstrates as he reloads the revolver, the spent bullet flicking out as unseen gears whirr. He slips a bullet from his vest into the cylinder and flicks the rifle closed. Then he flips the rifle, so the butt slams forward. Despite appearances, the butt seems, up close, to be made of blackened metal, not wood or plastic. "If get up close, just hit them with LoBoomGar, not know what hit them." He nods. "Argosa?" Rav suddenly looks a little extra green. "You never run into loud golem look like box on one wheel? Insane? Always cause trouble?" Rav's nightmares blink through his mind, an insane robot running around making people murder each other.

Your GM was just standing back for a few moments whilst you folks did introductions... now time to get this show on the road!!!

In the time that it has taken for introductions to be made, the camels - two of the ill-tempered beasts - have been harnessed and loaded with provisions. Patting one of them on the haunches, Wuli smiles, "Now you folks are acquainted, you'd best be on your way... it's a long enough trek out of the Barony of Dust and I've got you supplies for a week's travelling".

"Now, like I said last night... if you folks are set on finding out about those shards of glass from around the gates then your best bet is Saint Albat's of the Soil in the Barony of Merebec. And..." Wuli pauses as he gauges whether to ask for something or not, "I'd appreciate it, and pay the going rate, if you'd take this shipment with you". Pointing towards a train of four camels, Wuli tells the friends that it is a shipment of chag armour and that he'll happily pay 1,000 gold for their inconvenience, "Ask for Baron Yacob when you get there..."

"Oh, and I had this map made up for you", Wuli hands over a parchment showing the route north west from Fort Buckle... it is remarkably low on detail...

So, ready to move on? Fort Buckle isn't a shopping mecca but is there anything you'd like to reprovision with?

Rav's all up to date, so good on that count. Helps to have just rebuilt

Rav grumbles about much of nothing, all under his breath, and swaggers back into the hut. He comes back out a few minutes later, having packed up the remainder of his stuff in his pack. The bird, now dead, has been gutted and had it's head chopped off. The reptillian thing hangs from the back of his pack, oddly no blood dripping from it. Yay for centrifuges, but don't be surprised at the amount of blood on the walls of the crude hut!

"Ok, ready go."

"Let me just grab my things and I'll be ready to go," Palo nods as she turns and heads back into the small hut. "Won't take long, not like we've got much," her voice floats back out.

After maybe five minutes, Palo comes back out dressed in a simple set of leather armor and sporting a small backpack. "When you spend most of your time on the road you learn to pack light. I guess I'm ready when the rest of you lot are, though I could do with a bite to eat for breakfast. And that disgusting bird-thing you just killed does not count, Rav!"

Rav walks over to Relas, and grabs ahold of Relas's shoulders, and pulls himself up so he's riding the cat. "Ok, so, old story trade. Got it. Tell about Ballad of Rav and Relas, oh and Palo too." He grins, showing teeth, and puffs on his cigar as Relas starts off.

"So, was first job Rav and Palo and Relas do together, Palo no trust Rav, and Relas no trust Rav, 'cause Rav is Goblin. Rav no trust Palo and Relas 'cause Relas look hungry and Palo long shank." He rubs Relas behind the ear. "Anyway, cute funny little Fairy Dragon named Morgrathharaxxellianragh find Rav while Rav digging up Sulfur, and ask Rav if Rav want job. Rav agree, as Rav need gold. Morgrathharaxxellianragh lead Rav to her other employee, Palo and Relas. Think Morgrathharaxxellianragh think it funny pair up Rav and Palo and Relas." He grins. "Was kind of funny."

He takes a flask off his hip and drinks a swig and then returns to the story. "So Morgrathharaxxellianragh need someone go kill a trapper who trapping Psuedodragons and selling them to evil wizards for pets. Rav and Palo traipse deep deep deep into jungle, and Morgrathharaxxellianragh lead us to hunter's camp. Hunter had cages with very unhappy Pseudodragons in them. We wait until hunter asleep, and Morgrathharaxxellianragh go all invisible and sneak into hunter camp and gnaw on hunter bow string, and smear grease on hunter sword, and pull all hunter's alchemical jars out of bandolier and replace them with jars from hunter kit. Then Palo and Relas and Rav wait for dawn..." He waves a hand toward Palo. "...'cause Palo blind at night. When dawn come, hunter wake up and Palo and Relas and Rav storm camp."

Rav takes another swig. "Palo fire crossbow and miss, Relas attack and miss, Rav shoot and hit, but was only flesh wound. Hunter grab sword and sword slip out of hands. Hunter pull bow." He mimes losing a sword and then pulling out a bow. "Palo reload crossbow. Relas attack and get a claw in but just make scratches on leg. Rav reload gun. Hunter draw arrow and bow string break, Hunter curse." He mimes pulling on a string and it snapping. "Hunter pull jar from bandolier. Palo shoot crossbow and miss, Relas rip a good hole in Hunter leg, lots of blood. Rav fire gun and blow good hole in Hunter. Hunter throw jar at Palo." He glances over at Palo. "Palo good at dodging as she good at hitting side of mountain with crossbow, so Palo slam jar with forehead trying to dodge. Jar burst open, make cut on forehead, and splatter Palo with yellow liquid." He pats Relas to get him to stop laughing. "No get ahead of story."

"Palo reload crossbow, Relas rip into Hunter, Hunter go down. Rav reload and put bullet in Hunter head, make sure dead, then free all Pseudodragons, who dance around around Rav and Relas trilling. All stay away from Palo. Palo stink." He holds his nose. "Palo covered with Civit Urine, old, ripe, Civit Urine. Hunter use to scare civit cats off his traps."

"Rav, Relas, and Stinky start walking out of jungle, and monkeys begin screaching when we come near. Start throwing poop at Palo. Two solid days monkeys throw poop at Palo and screach at her. Civit cats eat monkeys, monkeys chase off with poop when see or smell, and Palo smell like biggest civit cat ever, so monkeys come from miles away to throw poop at her. By time we get out of jungle and back to town, Palo brown from head to toe. Town guards no let her in town, she have to wash off in horse trough.. several times. Had to burn clothes too, if remember right. Still smelled like monkey poop and civit urine a week later."

Once everyone is set to go, Drancis having obtained suitable supplies (happy for Drancis to stock up with the items suggested in the discussion thread) and the camels arranged in a train, the slightly odd group pass through the settlement gates - and out into the scrubland of the Barony of Dust.

The sun climbs higher and higher into the sky, bringing with it soaring temperatures and only the briefest of respite from the winds coming in from the sea... there is little shade to be found along the ill-defined dirt track leading them onwards and, even after little more than two hours trek, the signs of bleached bones half-covered by sands are becoming depressingly frequent. Wuli's map, such as it is, suggests that the group will soon pass the 'Howling Stones'... and, as they reach the peak of a shallow ascent, they see them...

A stand of orange, glass-like stones surrounds the dirt highway passing through this part of the barrens. Each one towers almost 20 feet high with hundreds of sharp, glossy shards scattered around them like small halos. Pitted holes riddle the pillars themselves and, as the wind picks up, they emit a high-pitched howl that eventually harmonizes into dozens of unique, orchestrated whistles. The hardpan within the circle of stones is noticeably darker than the surrounding sand and absolutely no scrub grows here. A larger stone nearly 50 feet high and twice as wide sits alone outside the howling circle.

Drancis stares at Ravboom, both repulsed and impressed by the goblin's penchant for tall tales, at a loss for words.

Does he actually expect me to BUY that load of clatrap? Still it was an entertaining story, nonetheless...

Once the group comes within sight of the strange glass-like stones he holds up his camel mount quietly curious to see how the new guides handled themselves here.

Those are rather strange...and most unsettling... he thinks as he studies them further.

Knowledge (Engineering): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10

Examining the stones from a safe distance, Palomia is nearly overwhelmed by the strong transmutation aura emanating from each of the columns... the first magical aura of any note she has seen since the gate, it pulses with a rhythmic energy. Watching, whilst his camel grumbles and stamps, Drancis determines little about the workings or purpose of these columns... although he does notice indeterminate scorching effect of the ground inside the circle.

Rikkan climbs down off his camel, and finds a place to tie it off. He watches to see if there is a reaction to the thrown chicken. If not, we will slowly approach the area, looking for anything unusual.

Ravboom's half-eaten bird arcs through the air, a final flight of sorts for the avian, before landing - in a small cloud of dust and dirt - in the very centre of the circle... and nothing happens. The stones stand as impassively and inert as they ever were... although Rikkan, seeing them glinting in the sun, notices that the broken shards around each pillar bear tiny cracks and fractures similar to the circuitry-like patterns of the shard they found in Shakes' lair.

Rav grins. "Rav can smash them if you want, easy peasy, how many shards you want them in?"

Slowly, and watching for a reaction as it goes, Drancis floats the shard into the ring of stones... and, once more as with Ravboom's dessicated bird, nothing happens... Nor is Locke close enough to determine anything about the intricacies of the stones and their auras.

Whilst the stone circle spans the dirt track there is certainly nothing stopping the group navigating around it they wish.

"That's a really strong transmutation aura," Palo warns. "It's practically pulsing off of every one of those columns. I'd be careful about just walking through it - whatever it does, it might only work on living creatures, after all."

She watches with a bit of surprise as Drancis seems to just levitate the small shard he carried out into the circle of stones, all without hand gestures or incantations. "Okay wait a minute - are you a wizard or something? If so, that's some pretty fancy spellwork to do that little trick without having to use an incantation or any other components!"

Drancis brings the shard back into his hand, pocketing it thoughtfully. There must be a reason these columns exist...they have a strong aura of magic...Transmutation magic. Hmmm...I wonder...

Waving the others back to him, especially the impetuous goblin, he points out the large stone along with the smaller stones. "I think this may be a...GATE! Non-functional, I believe, yet still holding the energies required to open a portal between worlds. We should avoid tampering with them further", he warns with a pointed look at Ravboom.

As Palomia questions the nature of his own 'magic', he shakes his head almost in embarrassment, "No Palomia, I am no wizard. I have no way to detect magical auras like you do for example." He scratches his head for a moment trying to figure out how to continue, "Well the best way I can explain it is I can see...bubbles that surround...everything. You, me, the air, the ground, those shards...everything. I can use my mind to manipulate these bubbles that exist to levitate things...even items as heavy as YOU!"

Rav rubs his chin. "Hmm, gate remnant?" He taps some of the buttons on his pack straps, and the pack delivers out some tools. He approaches the stones carefully, and extends tongs out half a foot to carefully pick up a few of the shards off the ground. @GM - Potential crafting materials?

”Could we reactivate the gate? Perhaps if we gathered more of the shards like the one Drancis has? This could be the gate we are looking for,” Rikkan thinks out loud as he stares at the columns.

"Anything possible. Saw Palo hit with her crossbow once..." He pauses. "Oh wait, was in nightmare with crazy bot. If Palo hit with crossbow, then maybe gate can be saved, then anything possible."

Locke chuckles lightly at Ravboom's ribbing of Palo, but his face turns serious as he speaks, "We know too little, this makes our journey for answers in the Barony of Merebec all the more important. Hopefully someone will know or have some record of if this is a gate, and if it is how we could activate it. Perhaps there are even more of them out there."

"Um, not to be nosy or anything but why are you guys looking for a gate?" Relas asks. "Trying to get back home to Golarion? Or is there somewhere else you're trying to go?"

As Ravboom reaches out with his tongs, standing as far from the stones as he can, he feels an the air change somewhat... there is the feeling of an impending electrical storm as, barely perceptible, blue light phosphoresces in rectangular patterns across the closest of the stones... the effect subsides almost instantaneously as Ravboom draws the tongs away.

The shards themselves, the friends note, do indeed have similar markings to the glass fragment they rook from 'Shakes'... but, so damaged are they, it would be nigh on impossible to reform them - even if they understood what they were and how they worked...

Ravboom - the glass fragments are so damaged that they would be nigh on useless as crafting materials.

Rav rubs his chin thoughtfully. "If was gate, utterly dead. That mean Palo no hit mountain with crossbow this week." He walks once around the stones and returns to his original spot. "No react to dead bird, react to tongs..." He puts the tongs away, and instead goes back about 80 ft, and picks up a stone. "Stay back." He hefts the stone, and then rockets it like a bullet the size of his fist at a shard on the opposite side of the circle, near the edge, trying to knock it out of the circle.

Limitless range

Do we need to do to hits? Rav can throw stones all day until he hits it.

Ravboom's stone fizzes across the centre of the circle, smacking into one of the many shards scattered inside of the stones and sending it bouncing out of the circle... when it is eventually retrieved there is literally no sign of impact damage where Ravboom's missile hit it...

...nor does the 'gate' seem to respond to either the stone entering or the shard leaving its bounded circle.

"Hah, maybe it don't like metal..." He pockets the shard, and then returning to the same place, he takes a spent cartridge from his pocket (the one he used to shoo the bird) and then zings the metal cartridge through the circle.

If that doesn't generate anything, he finds a bug of some kind, drops it into a small burlap sack, and throws the sack through the circle. If he can catch a mouse or something, he'll do that instead.

"Well, going home at some point wouldn't bother me a bit," Palo responds as she watches Rav's experiments with the stone circle. "Though to be honest, I don't think being out here bothers Rav so bad. Guess it's because no one really bats an eye at a goblin like they would back home."

"Rav want's option to go home. Visit sister and old man." He rubs his chin. "Maybe need send letter to sister first, so not get clobbered for not sending letter sooner. Hmmm, maybe pay Palo deliver letter first, let Palo get clobbered."

Rikkan: THIS post explains what exactly we are looking for.

Drancis makes a mental note of the effects of the various materials upon the structure, which he feels certain is a non functional Gate. "We should press on here. I am curious to know whether there are any other structures," turning to face Palomia he adds, "We have our own reasons for returning to Golarion."

If what I have heard of the Hegemony is true, then no one on Golarion is safe.

Rikkan wrote:

Drancis has the right of it... the journey to Rythes was to retrieve the 'Optus Aeterna' - an ancient artefact that contains knowledge of the 'Weave' - the interconnections between the ancient gates... Relstanna supposed that finding this information would allow the friends to return, possibly through the Garsilt gate, to Golarion.

As Ravboom's cartridge arcs across the circle, the humming noise builds to a crescendo and, in an explosion of light, a network of arcing electricity catches the scrap metal... and vaporises it.

There are 1d3 ⇒ 1 arcs... resulting in the formation of 1 Aether Elemental

There is a moment of silence before a strangely humanoid figure, from interwoven, translucent threads of an unusual multicolored material, phases into existence within the stone circle...

Random Target: 1d6 ⇒ 3: Drancis

...and, as the creature looks towards Drancis, he starts to feel himself lifting from the ground - not as if he were getting lighter more as if he was being physically lifted!!!

Drancis:
The bubbles that Drancis can normally see and feel are building around him...

Initiative for Party and Enemy

Ravboom, Initiative: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Palomia / Relas, Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Zoreck, Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Locke, Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Rikkan, Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Drancis, Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20

Aether Elemental, Initiative: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

Initiative Order
Ravboom, Drancis then
Aether Elemental then
Zoreck, Locke, Palomia / Relas and Rikkan

Ravboom and Drancis may act now
