I honestly didn't think it would be that easy or that quick. Let's hope this isn't some kind of trap! Locke gives his friends a roguish grin and with a quick running start jumps through the portal.

By the Gods...I really HATE his... Drancis thinks to himself as he steps through the gate.

A pleasant tingling sensation washes over the group as, one by one, they near the shimmering pink energy playing across the gate’s ring, making the hair on their heads stand on end. Partially passing through the gate reveals nothing of the other side... it requires full passage to see their destination...

In the blink of an eye, a murky green, liquid haze replaces the scene from Mr. Sarlu’s gateway chamber. Tall, snaky plants with deep blue fronds wave hypnotically all around - growing from a deep- red coral reef. The friend's arrival on Rythes has seemingly submerged them in seawater!!!

Everyone must make a DC 20 Reflex save to avoid taking in a lungful of seawater. Those who fail assume the nauseated condition and begin suffocating, while those who succeed manage to hold their breath at the last instant.

Possibly because of his momentum on entering the gate, Locke notices the water around him immediately and suppresses the urge to take a breath. He looks upward to see how far away the surface seems and then quickly scans his allies to see if anyone is struggling.

While seemingly dire, the water is only 15 feet deep here... soft sunlight dappled on the surface above the group whilst the seabed slopes upwards to the shore 60 feet ahead in a relatively placid grotto.

A successful DC 12 Swim check allows a PC to move forward or upward.

Woah! Really glad I burned that Hero Point ahead of the roll!

Zoreck gets a sudden feeling of danger, and sucks in a breath of air and holds it as he steps through the portal. Eyes stinging in the salt water, he see Rikkan struggling. Zoreck grabs his friend and starts swimming for the surface...

Swim: 1d20 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 - 1 = 2 ...Nope!

...but between Rikkan's struggles and the weight of his own gear, he isn't able to help much.

Damn that Sarlu! He could have warned us we'd be ending up in water!

Suddenly beneath water, most of the friends are quick to hold their breath... and avoid gulping in a lungful of salt-laden water - Rikkan is less fortunate, and finds himself gasping for air that isn't there. Panicked, he starts to sink towards the seabed... only to find himself buoyed upwards by aetheric bubbles - and, maybe with less ceremony than he would prefer, breaking the surface of the water and back into breathable air!!!! Drancis and Locke follow shortly behind him, surfacing in gently breaking waves...

...Zoreck, on the other hand, having caught his breath just in time finds himself tangled up by fronds of coral: 2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 slashing damage...

Rolling a second Swim Check for Zoreck: 1d20 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 2 - 1 = 16, Success

Kicking on, and pulling himself free of the coral, Zoreck is soon breathing fresh air as he treads water with his friends. A soft yellow sun shines overhead and there isn't a cloud in the sky, a beautifully warm wind blowing out from the shore... no more than thirty or forty feet away.

...and of Mayenyi, there is no sign - maybe she didn't step through the gate... or maybe she did and something went awry. Regardless, the friends watch for her arrival - diving downwards as often as they can - but still there is nothing to suggest what has happened to her. Eventually, fatigued from maintaining their position in the water, they swim ashore.

A small ledge leads to a shack along the shoreline, built from dull gray stone shot through with purple marbling. A bow-legged old dwarf emerges from the shack, clad in dusty homespun clothes and sporting a near-toothless grin. He walks to the water’s edge, one hand pressed against the small of his stooped back and the other clutching a bundle of tattered towels. He waves the towels in the air, “Hey there, off-worlders!” he shouts, “Welcome to the arse-end of Rythes!"

Locke heads towards the dwarf, taking the opportunity to move forward and distract himself from worry about Mayenyi. I am surprised to meet a living soul so soon after crossing the gate. "I take it guests aren't uncommon, but do they usually survive appearing underwater like that? Or do they usually get a warning?" He offers a dripping hand to the dwarf, "Locke Lestrange, at your service."

Drancis swims ashore a lttle clumsily, unwilling to alert the native of his mind powers. As he climbs to his feet making sure all of his gear survived the trek and nods in greeting to the dwarf, "I am Drancis and it is nice to meet you, Mister..." He pauses awaiting a reply.

It seems odd he would be out here by himself...yet he certainly must have seen those who preceded us here. My question is...what does he know of them, and was he BEHIND their disappearance?

Rikkan breaks the surface of the water, coughing and sputtering. "Thanks, Drancis," he coughs, shaking his head, and trying to get the water out of his ears. He was so shocked by the experience that he didn't even remember paddling to the shore. Once he made it, he sat on all fours for a few, coughing up the remnants of whatever water he had in his lungs. He looked around, taking in the scene.

"Greetings, dwarf. I'm Rikkan," he calls out, and introduces the rest of the group in turn.

The dwarf grins as Locke references their underwater arrival, "Ain't a single fellow come through there who hasn't bin surprised by the waters... I dare say over the years there's been a couple of folks who haven't made it so that's why I made my home here. Anything I can do to ensure folks get safely ashore and directed onwards... it don't pay nothing but it's good for the soul". As each of the friends introduce themselves, the dwarf smiles, "The name's Honigal... and I guess I have the privilege of welcoming you to this broken world. Rythes ain't nobody's idea of paradise yet you keep on coming... no-one for eight months and then you're the third lot to arrive in six weeks. What're you folks looking for? You must have some reason for coming here?"

…Honigal laughs, ”The heavens know… we’ve all got plenty of reasons to leave this place!”

So he does know of those who followed us. I wonder what happened to them...Not sure I completely trust him...

"Yes, that is an interesting thing to say." Drancis squints skyward at the warm sun overhead. So far I cannot complain about the weather!"

"The weather? I guess it depends on what you enjoy my friend... if you want days of endless sun followed by downpours that do nothing to the dead ground then you've come to the right place!!!" Honigal seems to enjoy having an audience, "Oh yes... this is a dead planet... nothing grows here apart from around the ancient gates - and they're controlled by the Baronies. There are stories that Rythes was once a bountiful place - a paradise - but something changed to herald in an age of dust".

And then, to Zoreck, "Course I've got a reason to leave... anyone who's grown up on this rock has. It's just, no-one really knows how. The 'gates' don't work anymore... haven't for as long as anyone can remember. Still, folks like yourselves seem to be able to arrive through them... and are normally quite distressed to find out it's a one way trip!!! So why are you folks here then? Ain't no sane person would come to Rythes!!!"

Honigal tries to remain upbeat when Zoreck realises the predicament that the group now find themselves in, "Oh dear... looks like you weren't warned!!! Same goes for some of the folks who have come through in the past... they drift off from here after a while of kicking things - I guess they head to the Baronies. Maybe some of them found a gate that worked", the hopeful look on the dwarf's face isn't entirely convincing...

Drancis fights off a feeling of hopelessness after Honigal's reply, "The Baronies? Is that what the others decided head towards once they made it here?"

"The Baronies are oases of life around the ancient gates... everywhere else is desert and dust - only crazies and bandits live there", Honigal smiles, "That's where they headed for certain... it's a long enough hike though. You want to head to Buckle now - it ain't so far. And... they serve drinks down at Wuli’s in Buckle..."

Honigal adopts a conspiratorial tone, "... but steer clear of Wuli’s daughter. That minx flirts too much with off-worlders. Probably thinks one of ’em can take her off planet, I guess".

Locke shrugs his shoulders at the news of their current predicament and offers a cocky grin, "We tend to get our best results when backed into a corner. Let us show Rythes we aren't to be trifled with!" At Rikkan's offer Locke adds, "We certainly wouldn't turn you away if you wish to join. If anyone can talk, bribe or fight their way through a gate and off this planet it would be us. You would be backing the winning team my friend." He nods at his friends in a show of respect to their abilities.

Honigal shakes his head, "I'd be more hindrance than help if I came... sure of it... sure of it. I'm going to carry on doing what is good for the soul and stay here... if anyone else comes through that gate, and I'm sure they will, then I'll be here to help them on their way". The dwarf smiles, a strangely reassuring sight even with his toothless mouth, "But I wish you the best of luck... and maybe, one day in the future, I can be the one to say that I met the heroes who managed to find a way off of this rock!!!"

He points towards the hint of a trail that heads westwards over a ridge, "That way lies Fort Buckle... and what passes for civilisation 'round these parts. The best of luck to you folks... the best of luck..."

I think we should be careful, this trail may not lead us to 'safety' but only greater danger."

Drncis nods slowly his eyes focused far away, "I think you are right to be cautious Locke. The fact the other parties preceding us have vanished lends credence to your suspicions. Would I a bandit group I would want someone informing us when new arrivals show up." He pauses glancing back to where the trail leads to Honigal. "I don't know if we should waste time by following back and watching him, but we obviously need to keep a watch behind us, in case he is up to funny business. I mean, why would he want to stay here in the middle of all this, if it as bad as he says?"

Honigal, despite his strange insistence that he should stay here at the waterside rather than travel with the adventurers, actually seems to be an honest man... sneaking a look back at the beach when they reach a suitable vantage point, the group watch as the hunched dwarf paddles up to his knees in the waves and starts to examine various lobster pots and the like... certainly nothing about his behaviour suggests that treachery is afoot.

And so, still cautious - rightly so in this strange land, the friends follow the trail onwards... Drancis senses it first, a rumbling in the ground - at first, the group think it the precursor of an earthquake and start to look for safety... yet they soon see the source - two, enormous beetles, each crowned with a trio of wicked horns and standing some twenty feet high, circle each other. When one finds an opening, it charges the other, and they lock horns, only to disengage and continue circling... so far, they are that engrossed in their duelling that they seem not to have noticed the travellers...

On the road, Zoreck tries his best to dry out his supply of gunpowder and alchemical cartridges in the desert air.

"What the...?"

Spying the two giant insects engaged in battle, Zoreck is about to suggest trying to skirt them without being noticed... until Rikkan darts off.

"Dmannit!"

Cocking the hammer of his gun, Zoreck follows his friend.

The beasts barely notice the group as Drancis, Rikkan and Zoreck move closer... and, inquisitive to the last, the ratfolk scurries towards a pile of scales half-covered in sand. Iridescent in the rising desert sun, the beetles suddenly stop.... and as they back away from each other, they turn towards the group... mandibles clicking furiously, they start to shamble towards Rikkan - fifty feet or so away, they pick up speed and, looming large, they quickly close the distance.

Clicking in pain, it looms high above Locke... exposing an unprotected area of flesh for the half-elf to swing his axe at - badly wounded, but not dead, the beetle crashes down at Locke.

Move: Accept 2 Burn, use Gather Power and Infusion Specialization to reduce Burn cost to 0.
Attack: Kinetic Blast against Chag Beetle #2.
Kinetic Blast, Burn, dazzled: 1d20 + 7 + 4 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 7 + 4 - 1 = 26; damage: 3d6 + 6 + 8 ⇒ (6, 6, 2) + 6 + 8 = 28 *1.5 = 42 damage total, treated as Magic for purposes of DR.
.
GM Zed: Please note Drancis has 6 Temp HP from his Force Ward class ability.

Drancis' blast virtually sends the beetle clattering sideways, and as it threatens to collapse on Zoreck, blood soaks into the dry ground beneath the huge beast...

GM Only:
Chag Beetle 1 = 1/45, Chag Beetle 2 = 3/45

Waiting on actions from Rikkan, Locke and Zoreck

Rikkan moves so that he is still within 30’ from the beasties. He pulls a bomb and tosses it at the closest one.

RTA 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Fire damage 3d6 + 5 ⇒ (4, 5, 4) + 5 = 18

Edit: forgot Fort save 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27

Male Half-Elf Mythic (Marshal) Skald (Fated Champion) 6 - 52/52 HP - 18/17 AC; 12/11 T; 16/15 FF - Fort +8; Ref +4; Will +6/+8 - Initiative +5 - Perception +11 - Low-light Vision - RS 24/24 - Surge 1d6 - MP 5/5 - 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/2

Locke grunts as he takes hits from the beetle but turns the pain into momentum, swinging his axe in from the side.

Fortitude: 1d20 + 8 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 8 + (5) = 20
Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Damage: 1d12 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25

Surge on the fort save and then a raging song power attack to the beasty.

Rikkan's bomb nestles within a large crack in the first beetle's carapace, fizzes for a second and then detonates!!! Fragments of meat are strewn in a wide corona where the beetle once stood... and Zoreck, wet with yellow fluids, is coated in the stuff. Shielded from the vile smear by the second beetle, Locke tries to look away from the glinting carapace of his foe...

...and, trying to pull on his reserves, find himself feeling somehow 'wrong'.

Any character attempting to use a Mythic Ability (other than 'Hard to Kill') or Mythic Surge must succeed on a DC 20 Fortitude save or become sickened for 1d4+1 hours. The mythic surge or path ability fails regardless.

Moving past the discombobulated feeling, Locke smashes his axe into the beetle - and fells it with a single blow. Crashing to the floor, it sends a plume of dust upwards for a moment... and then the blood of the two mighty beasts, both cracked and smashed from the furiously contested fight, soaks quickly into the parched land... whilst the group start to feel the effort in the hot sun.

Combat Over.

Actions? Examining the beasts? Continuing along the trail to Buckle? Or maybe something else?

Drancis hurries over to Locke, noting the man's look on his face. "Are you feeling OK Locke? Did you get poisoned?" He takes out the newly acquired wand and hefts it experimentally, "I hope I do this right..."

Locke grits his teeth for a moment but reasserts himself after a moment of heavy breathing. He nods at Drancis in thanks, I'm fine now, but there is definitely something odd about the shell of these creatures. I would not suggest starting at them." He cleans off his axe and sheathes it across his back once more, "Rikkan, if you still want those samples make it quick. We should find this 'Buckle' so we can set up a base of operations and gather information."

Fortitude: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Fast healing from Skald's Vigor should give me an extra two points putting me at full HP thanks to Drancis!

Rikkan picks up a shard from the carapace of the beast that he helped explode, and tucked it into a vial. As he put the stopper back on the vial, he nodded. ”Ready to go,” he said excitedly!

Drancis nods in reply, as he stows his wand. "Yes, lets get moving. No telling what scavengers will be arriving here!"
