The shadow, turning to face Drancis and gazing upon him with eyes of midnight black, is suddenly caught by Rikkan's bomb... lit up by the bright mercury of the incendiary, the fading shadow is then ripped into fragments by Drancis' telekinesis.

Waiting on actions from Mayenyi, Zoreck, Locke and Kasia.

There are now 2 Surrat Coterie members in the fight.

Male Half-Elf Mythic (Marshal) Skald (Fated Champion) 6 - 52/52 HP - 18/17 AC; 12/11 T; 16/15 FF - Fort +8; Ref +4; Will +6/+8 - Initiative +5 - Perception +11 - Low-light Vision - RS 24/24 - Surge 1d6 - MP 5/5 - 1st 4/4, 2nd 2/2

Locke has a brief moment of worry as the shadow being detaches itself from the fallen Surrat agent, but seeing Drancis and Rikkan deal with it quickly he turns to the other agents. Stepping up beside Zoreck and Mayenyi he attempts to bash the side of his axe into the more wounded of the two agents while continuing his chant.

Non-lethal power attack: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 8 - 4 = 10

Mayneyi, seeing the shadow disappear, feels a moment's relief - but the parasitic shadow's appearance seems to just enrage her further.

Attacking the same one as last time, but not going nonlethal this time. No point, if they're just going to be killed by their shadows detaching anyway... 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 31, damage: 1d6 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 8; crit confirm: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 29, crit damage: 1d6 + 2 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 2 + 2 + 1 = 6

Mayenyi's spear takes down a second of the men... and, even as he draws a laboured breath, his shadow detaches itself and the man rattles a dry final breath. Standing, the shadow lunges at Mayenyi...

Mayenyi feels the cold chill run through her, and she retreats a step before murmuring a brief invocation to the world spirit. Her left hand suddenly glows with the verdant light of midsummer noon through a forest canopy, and she holds the glow out toward the shadow.

5 ft step away, then casting cure moderate wounds and holding the charge.

Drancis, dealing with the second of the animated shadows as quickly as he saw the first, attempts to rend it in two with a mighty blast of aether... rippling in the shockwaves, the shadow is diminished... but not yet defeated.

Locke's axe cuts deep into the leg of his opponent... and even now, whilst the gang member still lives, it seems to Locke that the man's shadow is straining to break free of its corporeal tethers... the raging half-elf has little time to consider that though, being forced to duck as a poorly aimed bomb from Rikkan bounces past him before detonating harmlessly some yards from the combat...

The second blow from the shadow is far more draining than the first, Mayenyi visibly withered by the dark touch of the being... whilst Zoreck, having avoided being struck the last time the gang member swung at him, is less lucky this time around...

As the party recovers from the attack of the Surrat gang members, Drancis reaches into his pouch and hands Mayenyi a small potion bottle (Potion of Lesser Restoration). "Here. This should remove the damage you took from the shadow." He digs around the pack a little further before finding a small syringe. "We also picked these up earlier. This should also restore your strength, though they do have some side effects."

Basically handing her a Vive Syringe. Vive revitalizes the body at the cost of mental acuity. This pharmaceutical has an onset time of 1 minute. It eliminates fatigue and exhaustion and heals 1d4 points of ability damage to a physical ability score (Strength, Dexterity, or Constitution) of the target’s choice. The first dose taken in a 24-hour period deals 1d2 points of ability damage to Intelligence and Wisdom; additional doses in that period deal 1d4 points of ability damage instead. Vive can be resisted with a successful DC 12 Fortitude saving throw.

Quickly moving on from the downed gang members, the friends hurry to keep their appointment with Mr Sarlu... The door to the building fits seamlessly within its molded stone and has no obvious handle or knocker. Made of a synthetic material, it appears off-white with touches of yellow, not unlike carved and polished ivory. A glassy globe sits within the concave door at eye level, though its unusual refracting surface reveals nothing of what lies beyond...

A knock at the door, echoing a dull thud as Zoreck hammers his fist against it, elicits movement in the globe... three enormous black eyeballs appear in the crystla, exaggerated and distorted by the curvature of the glass. A muffled, tinny voice - apparently emanating from the crystal itself, asks "State your business!!! Entrance by appointment only".

After the fight...

Zoreck rubs his shoulder and head where the thugs has pummeled him. After the plant-lady uses her healing magic on him, Zoreck says, "Mmmm... Much better. Thanks, Mayenyi."

Looking at the unconscious Surrat thug, he muses, "Weird that no shadow killed him, too." He kneels beside him to make sure he's still alive. "He'll wake up soon enough. Let's just leave him here."

Now...

Zoreck scowls into the glass orb with the eyeballs. "We do have an appointment." He provides the name and/or password we were given for meeting.

The muffled voice huffs, "Very Well...", and the door slides into the floor revealing a grand reception area... Large, otherworldly sculptures stand along the walls of this circular chamber, painted in subtle hues. Solid ivory doors lead north and south, and a large oval pool sits in the western half of the chamber, overlooked by a strangely designed couch. An iron ladder rises through the ceiling of an otherwise empty niche to the southeast.

...and there, standing in the opened door, a strange creature whose skin casts an oily sheen like that of a gray squid clad in humanoid clothing. Six, black eyes fill its bulbous head, arrayed three atop three, and a cluster of worm-like tendrils hang beneath its black beak. Waving tentacles suffice as arms, with suckers on their undersides exuding a clear mucus, as the creature ambulates over the ground on another half-dozen tentacles beneath it.

Image of Oulek.

The voice, still curiously inhuman and moist, "I am Oulek, business partner to Mr Sarlu... and you are here because of our Red Gate. Relstanna did not tell us why you seek access?"

"Fortune and Glory it is? Such things are to be grabbed... to the victor the spoils as they say!!! This is a worthwhile venture... and may serve Mr Sarlu well", Oulbek gushes somewhat as he guides the group past the pool and through to the next room... as they pass, it is impossible not to notice that the clear water of the pool also allows visitors to see two colourful eels scavenging a couple of badly waterlogged corpses resting at the bottom 15 feet below.

In the adjacent room, Oulek asks the group to wait whilst he confers with Mr Sarlu. A large, woven rug covers most of the floor in this comfortable chamber, lit by skylights in a massive dome overhead. A number of couches upholstered in exotic materials surround it, some obviously configured for alien physiques. More painted sculptures reside throughout the room, and ivory portals enter from all directions... the effect is ostentatious to say the least...

Rikkan grabs a spot on one of the strange couches as his attention was instantly drawn to the beautiful eels. The corpses weren't something he enjoyed seeing, but those eels were sure interesting. He wondered if there was a way he could get a tissue sample of one of those things!

The eels are indeed fine specimens and, quite possibly, not native to Argosa... what is more notable is that the two corpses floating at the bottom of the pool are bahgra, the gnoll-like race that the majority of the group first encountered in Lomrick's prisons. Seeing Rikkan's interest Oulek muses aloud, "Former associates of Mr. Sarlu... they disappointed him..."

"It seems we must endeavour to not disappoint Mr. Sarlu." Locke comments idly as he attempts to find a comfortable sitting positing on the alien couches. He eventually settles for awkwardly perching on what appears to be an armrest of sorts.

Drancis stands to one side gazing up in amazement at the architectural wonders of the room, before turning his attention to the corpses regarding them silently.

That is how it all began...Garsilt...Lomrick...all with the bahgra we first met...

He finally takes a seat upon the couch, his body shifting into an awkward posture to accommodate the odd angles.

Intriguingly, although Oulek has suggested that he must confer with Mr Sarlu, he doesn't leave the room - instead he simply moves to one side and, still looking at the group, seemingly murmurs to himself... after a few awkward moments, he talks once more, "It is well my friends... Mr. Sarlu will grant you an audience... come, come..."

The tentacled host ushers the group through another grand door -iImpressionistic murals of aquatic life cover the walls of the domed chamber beyond with the eastern half of the room holding a large pool filled with green water that completely cloaks its murky depths. Overhead skylights like those in the outer hall allow natural light.

To the south of the room, a large mechanical device includes a tangled collection of copper-coloured barrels, snaking tubes of silver, and pumping bladders with steam escaping from a dozen different valves. Three of the tubes enter the water, bubbles dancing on the surface of the liquid around them. Another painted abstract sculpture sits against the south wall alongside a large aquarium on wheels, filled with the same greenish water, though a bit more translucent. Rich tiling covers the floor, and the entire room feels uncomfortably warm.

Oulek watches the group for a reaction...

Rikkan walks over to the strange tubing device and the aquarium, wondering if there were more strange creatures he'd never seen before. "Not to be nosy, but what is this device? I've never seen anything like it, anywhere."

Locke steps forward as well, "Mr. Sarlu?" he asks and then glances back and forth between machine and aquarium waiting for Sarlu to reveal himself and to confirm Locke's suspicion that Sarlu is some kind of aquatic creature.

Oulek seems ready to answer Rikkan's query when he is interrupted... A silken voice speaks like a whisper mere inches from the ears of the friends... experience of Relstanna's mental abilities and her ability to converse through thought alone tells the group that they are dealing with someone or something with psychic talents, "Make yourself comfortable, honoured guests. Please... enjoy the seating Oulek has provided. Now, I understand you require use of my Red Gate, and I’m happy to oblige, but first you must tell me more about yourselves. You say you are adventurers and fortune seekers... what led you here and is there anything that you specifically seek on the other side of the Gate?"
