Drancis mutters under his breath, "Gotta improve my aim here..." even as he flings another rock at the klaven.

Attack the Klaven on the left again.
Kinetic Blast: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 3 + 1 = 22;
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 bludgeoning.

Whooops!!! I meant to say Illonna, Astraea and Zoreck may act now... Drancis, you can hang on to that attack roll for next round.

Will GMPC Zoreck whilst he is unavailable.

Levelling his pistol, aiming it at one of the uninjured klaven and cocking the hammer, Zoreck curses beneath his breath... gently, he squeezes the trigger, and the klaven's skull explodes!!!

Zoreck, pistol vs klaven (Ranged touch attack / bless): 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 2 + 1 = 28, critical threat
Confirming Critical: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 2 + 1 = 26, critical threat confirmed for 4d8 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 7) = 22

NICE! Zoreck will be happy to see that when he gets back.

Astraea, emboldened by the sight of Zoreck taking down a Klaven in a single shot, takes her spear out and throws it at one of the remaining Klaven. Not quite confident enough to go after the one Locke's fighting with that -4. Let's try one of the remaining ones on the left.

Spear (thrown): 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

This is why I leave the fighting to you guys. GM, can I use one of my 3 Hero Points to re-roll that? If so:

Spear re-roll: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 aaaand it's even worse!

Flinging her spear with some desparation, Astraea is lucky not to impale Locke with the wildly thrown weapon... stepping past the spear where it landed, Illonna slashes at one of the last remaining guards... she hits but it is only a glancing blow...

GMPC for Illonna

Illonna, Longsword vs Klaven: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19, hitting for 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

...now backed into a corner, the guards drop their rifles and, flexing their fierce claws, slash at Locke and Illonna. The first blow across Locke's chest is searing pain... Locke has barely a moment to take it in before a second claw is driven hard into his midriff... and he goes down.

Klaven, Claw vs Locke: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21, hitting for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Klaven, Claw vs Locke: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14, hitting for 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

...seeing Locke fall, Drancis is filled with anger... as the red mist descends, he flings a rock at the guard that attacked Locke. The jagged missile strikes the klaven across the temple... and, it too, falls.

...all the while, the stone circle stands upon its dais... inert and impassive yet somehow exuding an aura of destiny.

Only one guard remains. Illonna, Astraea, Rikkan and Zoreck may act now.

Astraea runs to Locke's side and lays a hand on him, knowing now she's out of her league attempting to actually fight the Klaven.

CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

1/5 spells remaining for the day.

Apologies for a couple of quiet days – last Friday was the end of the kid’s school year so lots of family stuff to do then and across the weekend… normal service resumed.

Stumbling towards the last remaining Klaven, Illonna slashes at it… her blade catches the guard across its midriff and forces it backwards against the raised platform… and straight into the flight path of Rikkan’s eagle, savage beak and talons combine to nearly blind the beast…

Zoreck, Longsword vs Klaven (Rage / Charge): 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 2 + 2 = 17, hitting for 1d8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 2 = 5

The last of the guards is now dead.

…and as the beast slips back off of Zoreck’s blade, he turns to Illonna – wiping a spatter of blood from his brow, ”I really, really hate those creeps”.

Astraea, quickly moving to Locke’s aid, kneels next to him and brings him back to consciousness…

With the clamour of battle passed, the friends are quickly reminded of the urgency of their situation – the voice declaring that ‘system failure is imminent’ continues its refrain… whilst, looming over them from its position on the raised platform and dominating the otherwise featureless room, the metallic circle awaits.

Also, the Scavenged Codex (the second book proper in the Legendary Planet AP) was sent out to Kickstarter Backers yesterday… I’ve only had a quick flick through but, on first impressions, you folks are in for a wild ride!!!

Drancis sighs in relief as the last of the guards is vanquished. He then takes out the metallic sphere and finishes assembling it, plugging the red gem into the sphere along with the key.

"Okay that should take care of it. The sphere should be attuned to Balimere...I hope. Guys, let's grab whatever is on their bodies and get out of here!" He looks over to Andretta, "Can you decipher any of these runes?" He adds, pointing at the side pillars.

Once everyone is ready to go, Drancis will activate the sphere and will send the sphere itself through the gate.

Rikkan helps pocket the items and makes a break for the portal as well.

As Drancis inserts the red gem into the clockwork, the metallic voice buzzes from the device, "Supervisor Garabool, this is Officer Lomrick reporting from Garsilt. I’ve made a vastly important discovery in our efforts for the Celestial Helix. Test subjects removed from the newly discovered world we found appear to have the exact Patron coding we need, however, I’m experiencing problems with Garsilt’s gate again. It maintains a stable connection to Argosa but has proven unreliable and intermittent when trying to reach other worlds, especially this most promising one. I’m temporarily evacuating to Argosa to ensure I don’t get stuck on Garsilt. In light of our profound discovery with these test subjects, I’m enlisting aid from our assets in Zel-Argose. We can’t afford to lose contact with a planet this valuable now that we’ve found a sign as important as this. Glory in our lifetime! I will endeavor to secure a new communication link from Argosa, as soon as possible. Lomrick out.”

...and then, propelled by Drancis' mind, the brass covered spheroid floats gently towards the metallic circle... closer, closer, closer... until it passes through - and nothing happens.

An impassive voice at ankle height announces, "Analysing... It would appear that there is insufficient power to operate the gate whilst maintaining atmospheric shielding at Garsilt Research Facility... Calculating.... Calculating...Calculating", continuously looping in a calculation, BR-N3R offers no solution to the problem...

Drancis' face falls as the sphere falls to the ground. Picking the sphere back up with his mind he tucks the sphere into his pouch. Putting aside the words recorded by Lomrick for the moment, he scratches his whiskers briefly. "BR mentioned there was a power source from the corridor to the north. We need to investigate it. There has to be a way to get extra power to the Gate from there, right?"

Locke offers his thoughts, "Could we not shut off this atmospheric shielding and rote all power to the gates?"

As the friends discuss their next move, a consensus starting to form around the idea of heading towards the power plant, the air starts to take on a strange electrical quality… there is an odd metallic taste on the tip of everyone’s tongue and, as a static charge starts to build, hair stands on end… and then, seeping out of the wall, a shifting mass of roiling clouds charged with electrical energy manifests itself with the barest outline of a humanoid face.

Knowledge (planes) DC14:
This creature as a Comozant Wyrd—a rare and unusual air elemental of blue-green plasma and static electricity.

…and, as it floats near to Rikkan, a shower of sparks arcs from the cloud towards the ratfolk – for the briefest of moments Rikkan is outlined in crackling electricity before the effect subsides leaving residual electrical wisps and flames shrouding his head and shoulders…

Rikkan:
The initial arc of sparks nor the residual flames do not hurt in anyway… and, somehow, now you can feel the presence of an intelligence within the cloud – it’s presence here gives a feeling not totally unlike the sensation of being watched.

Drancis thinks a moment on Locke's suggestion. "I hate to do that Locke as we would be killed here but I think that may be what we need to do here!"

As the strange electrical cloud envelopes the ratfolk, Drancis flexes his mind preparing to attack it but Rikkan's words give him pause.

"Does it have a name?" Drancis queries him. As the nature of the cloud creature dawns on him he gets an excited look on his face. "Hey! Maybe it can help power up the gate for us! Though I have no idea how it would do that..."

As Rikkan relaxes, a series of electrical arcs reach out to Drancis, to Astraea, to Zoreck, to Locke and to Andretta... each of them is briefly swathed in a cloud of sparks before the initial effect subsides and the electrostatic field concentrates itself around the heads and shoulders of those 'touched' by the creature. Tentatively, a seventh arc reaches out towards Illonna... almost tendril like in its appearance, the arc stops a few inches short of the android before fading to nothing...

Those touched by the creature have their vision somewhat obscured by the electrical effect... initially appearing to be a random maelstrom of electricity, the field abruptly starts to coalesce in front of their very eyes... a series of images are conveyed...

The metallic circle is shown - stood upon its dais within the room... yet, this time, it is shown with several of the runes around the circle's circumference glowing brightly and, one by one, humanoids entering the circle and disappearing... a huge feeling of wellbeing washes over the friends...

...and now, a huge comet striking a planet - and cracks forming within the resultant crater... plumes of gas can be seen escaping and now the feeling of wellbeing turns to panic...

...you are now in a familiar looking room... the area just north of the vertical shaft on this level... turning to the left, various items of technological equipment have been destroyed and, through a massive hole in the western wall, a tunnel - walls glowing white hot - heads upwards... and, prowling over the ruined equipment, lion-like creatures...

...the next series of images come in quick succession, a piece of technological equipment catching fire, the lights failing within the room... and the glowing runes on the metallic circle growing dim... A sense of despair pervades...

...and now finally, several humanoids and an arachnid robot move towards the ruined technological equipment... and a feeling of hope.

Drancis shakes his head as the visions fade from his sight. He turns to his fellow companions. "I am not completely sure what it is trying to tell us, but I think we need to try to...repair the equipment or else the gate will...fail?" He looks up uncertainly.

Drancis shakes his head emphatically. "I don't think it will work Rikkan. I think it is trying to tell us the gate itself is damaged in some way. If we try to use it now, we'll all be killed."

He motions to the exit and the passage leading north. "We need to try repairing that gate NOW!"

"Yes, I am quite certain this being is hopeful that we can repair the gate. If we can't I imagine we are all going to die quick, boring and pitifuls deaths. So let's mosey!" Locke heads for the room shown to them by the creature.

One by one, the arcs of electricity that the strange cloud creature has used to ‘communicate’ with the friends fade away, followed a few seconds later by the being itself… as it leaves, the emotions of fear, despair and hope that had accompanied the images also fade away…

Leaving behind the gate, standing powerless and inert upon its dais, the friends cautiously move to the north… on towards the room shown to them by the strange being…

The large chamber includes four, dominating columns of unusual green metal - each one of them throbs with a slow, rhythmic pulse and sheds a faint green light that oscillates with the eerie heartbeat sound. A thin layer of orange dust, marked by animal-like paw prints, coats the floor. To the northwest, a large breach has smashed part of the external wall, plainly revealing an irregularly cylindrical shaft tunnel that heads directly upwards… rocks and debris are scattered around a small meteorite at the bottom of this shaft. A shimmering translucent field of energy has cordoned off the broken wall from the outside environment, occasionally flickering with an intermittent drop in power. Several spherical objects litter the ground before the meteorite, both inside and beyond the energy field. Composed of strands of unusual metal, they appear hollow and torn open from within… and prowling around beyond the field, three of the blue leonine creatures…

Suddenly alert, they look at the friends entering what must be some kind of a power plant…

Drancis grabs a chunk of debris and flings it at the lone beast, hoping to finish it off before it can savage Illonna further.

Attack the Akata.
Kinetic Blast: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 14;
damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 bludgeoning.

*Unconscious*

As Illonna falls, Astraea is there to ensure that her wounds are staunched… with a simple touch, the oracle closes the puncture wounds in Illonna’s legs and a beatific look, as if she were simply asleep, falls upon the downed warrior’s face.

Illonna stabilised at -4HP

…now outnumbering the remaining creature, the friends unleash a flurry of attacks upon it… small dagger, elegant sword and finally a brutal kinetic shove, they all serve to protect Illonna from further ravages – and, as Locke’s blade slices down, ends the fight.

Combat Over

BR-N3R, having hidden against the walls of the chamber as the battle raged, scuttles quickly through the pulsing power units and across to the damaged area of the wall, Diagnostic Mode… damage to Power Generation Units is not severe – sufficient power for long-term atmospheric shielding is available however… the Power Conduit has suffered catastrophic damage and must be repaired… Interrogating Inventory… modular repair units are available in the southern maintenance bay… sufficient spares are recorded as available”.

…and the entire time that the machine is assessing the damage, a hissing noise emanates from the western side of the room…

Perception DC15:
The closer the friends get to the energy field across the breach in the western wall, the more acidic the air tastes…

Rikkan starts heading toward the southern repair bay to locate one of those mobile repair units.

"It sounds like that energy field may be failing. We don't have much time!" He exclaims as hissing noise grows louder. "We need to find that repair unit but we can't leave Illonna alone here either! If that field goes then she'll die!"

In an impassive voice, BR-N3R clarifies, "Correction... failure of the energy field will render all biological life currently present within the Garislt Research Facility non-viable"...

"What do you mean by that BR?" Locke's eyes shift about, weary of danger. Locke will head to the south bay with Rikkan.

"I think BR means we ALL will die here!" Drancis replys to Locke. "Andretta, can you stay here and keep an eye on Illonna? I have no idea what we may run into there, but this place should be safe..." He gives the woman an uncertain look. "If something happens here then just yell and we will come running, OK?"

Once Andretta nods in agreement, he will turn and follow the others.

F Aasimar Oracle (Stargazer) 3 | Hierophant Tier 1 | hp 26 | AC 14/t11/ff13 | F+3, R+3, W+6 | Init.+3 | Perception+10, Darkvision 30ft.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 Nice.

"Guys, the air tastes... acidic. We need to be careful as we get close to that breach." She turns to their little robot guide. "BR, do you know what that acid taste in the air up here is?"

Astraea knows that her body, due to her "unique" heritage, is somewhat more resistant to acid than her friends, and mentally steels herself to have to go through in place of them should the air prove too dangerous.

"...Um, if somebody needs to put in the repair unit and it's dangerous in there, I'll do it," she says finally. "I can't help much in a fight, but I'm pretty sure I'll stand a better chance at resisting if the... atmosphere's dangerous in there. Just trust me on this."

Scuttling beside the half-elf, the arachnid machine replies to Locke, Definition, term: Unviable (Physiology), Incapable of Sustaining Life… Further Clarification: if the atmospheric shielding fails then all living creatures in the Garsilt Research Facility, other than specimens of Species 361-3569, will die within sixty seconds”

Leaving Andretta and Zoreck with the fallen Illonna, the friends follow the mechanical helper towards the Maintenance Bay. Moving southwards beyond the vertical shaft and an alcove from which fresh air seems to blow, Astraea, Rikkan, Drancis and Locke pass a closed door to the east before the corridor they are following ends at a smashed door… physically peeled away from the track where it once slid into the wall, the door is scored and rent… Tendrils of green plant-like material are still attached to the door where it hangs crookedly to one side. Beyond the ruined door, metal shelving units fill the room, each containing various tools and supplies, some quite pedestrian and others so exotic as to defy explanation.

Perception DC15:
Nestled within the metal shelving and partially hidden by the boxes of equipment, two of the leonine creatures have apparently fallen asleep in this room.

Map update to follow

Note that the Klaven that you killed in the room outside of the Gate room were both carrying Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds – just saying ;)

I believe Drancis said he was searching the Klaven bodies in THIS post.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

Drancis puts his finger up to his lips. "I see two more of those lion creatures, and they look asleep." He shakes his head in confusion. "Why would they be asleep? Did something put them to sleep?"
