His face is covered by a helm. Trying to determine his thoughts, yet alone sanity, from this distance is extremely difficult.

The man continues to lean against the wall.

28/28 HP

Kekkle whispers "Do you think he's friendly? I hope he's friendly."

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

My Dark Souls knowledge tells me "sneak past him, he's either something like black knight or hiede knight", but that's extremely metagame. *Sigh*, TEAMWORK GOOOOO!

"Hello!" Pahleg calls loudly. "Are you sane, would you like to work with us to escape this labyrinth?"

The armored man raises his head at Pahleg's friendly call. Beneath his iron helm comes a cold voice. "Very sane, thank you very much. Don't come closer. We can talk from distance."

"Who are you anyway? Looking for a fight?"

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

Pahleg is delighted to hear words from the knight. "Fair enough, it's a dangerous area. No, we're not looking to fight, we're looking to escape this labyrinth. Would you be interested in joining us, or do you know anything that could help us?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20

female Gnome Kineticist 4 | HP (45(41)/45) | AC/Touch/Flat 18/14/15 | Fort/Ref/Will +9/+7/+2 | Init +5 | Percep +9

Or it's something like Solaire.

Elyna steps forward just enough to come into sight of the knight. "My name is Elyna, this is Pahleg the others with us are Goramar, Ulrich, Rilian, Ushio, Kekkle and Moritat. Might we know your name?"

This room is big. Why do I suddenly get the feeling that the X's don't mark fog walls but actually boss rooms?

"I cannot leave this position. If it's chatter you want, go talk to someone else." The knight pauses. "I can help you all right. Don't come any closer and turn back. If you want to continue your travels, there are stairs nearby, and ladders not that far either. Where are you headed?"

After the group's introduction the knight stands straight, no longer leaning against the wall. "There... are quite many of you. Eight. What would a group of that many be doing here?" The man grasps his greatsword and takes a battle-ready position. "Are you part of a covenant? Is that why you are really here?"

Male Half-Orc Slayer (Cutthroat) 1 | HP (12/12) | AC 16/13/13 | Saves Fort +3/Ref +5/Will -1 | Init +3 | Percep +3 | Intimidate +8 | Stealth +7 | Acrobatics +7 Spd: 30ft; CMB: +3; Rapier +4 (1d6+2/18-20)

The slayer takes up his rapier and buckler upon seeing the knight wield his giant sword. "It doesn't appear he truly wants to talk much more" Goramar says quietly so only the group can hear.

Sensing that a fight might be imminent, Goramar tries to slip into the shadows and hope that Elyna didn't give the knight too much information.

Stealth: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Goramar wants to try and stealth so he can possible sneak up on the knight if things get any more aggressive. He doesn't feel like he can bring the target down on his own so for once he will wait for the group to act.

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Ulrich stays put, trusting Elyna and Pahleg to handle the discussion.

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

Pahleg holds up his hands non-threateningly. "We are but lost travelers who seek to leave the labyrinth. We'll be on our way. We'll take the far side of the room around you." Pahleg slowly leads the group around the west and north sides of the room.

When Pahleg begins leading the group towards the door, the armored man raises his voice, now practically shouting. "Not one step closer to that door! There is nothing for you there. Only authorized people may enter there. If you are lost as you claim you should turn back immediately and turn right, that should lead you to other people. This is my last warning!"

He then mutters something you can just barely hear.

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Ulrich places a hand on Pahleg and Elyna's shoulders, as he starts stepping back toward where the party came from.

"Who would be authorized, then? Who do you represent? We shall heed your warning, but we would like to know whose territory we have stumbled into, before we leave you be."

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

Pahleg stops as bid and nods with Ulrich's words. "We do not wish to cause trouble, but we seek to learn more about where we are. Please, a little information and we will be on our way."

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

My metagame side is tempted to kill him because he will give us soooouuulllssss...

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

And yet, there may be repercussions from whatever covenant this guy belongs to. I am playing my wisdom 7 fighter with a little too much common sense, though...

The knight takes a bold military attention and announces: "This area is the B15F prison outpost of Hellfire, under the watch of Hell Lieutenant ser Ysmus. Hell Private Jhakarias, order of the Lantern, presenting." Emboldened by his military pride, he continues: "Authorization to proceed must be earned from a Hellknight of the rank Corporal or higher."

"Should you truly wish to enter through that door, you should speak with Corporal Matt. He's resting in B16F, not that far from here. Just go straight there," pointing towards the tunnel next to you, "take a turn right, head down, and keep going forward."

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Ulrich's eye brightens for a moment.

Order. Structure. Hierarchy. Maybe this Hellfire order is just want I need to make sense of this purgatory...

"Very good. I should like to hear what he has to say."

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

I suppose structured evil is better than the random kind. "Thank you for your help. As promised, we will be on our way."

female Gnome Kineticist 4 | HP (45(41)/45) | AC/Touch/Flat 18/14/15 | Fort/Ref/Will +9/+7/+2 | Init +5 | Percep +9

"First we're assaulted by insane people and now we have to deal with bureaucracy, this place truly is hell." Elyna comments, "Well let's not upset the man any further. Maybe it's not all that difficult, to get this Corporal Matt to give us a grant or whatever."

Looks like you've decided to leave this area for now and go somewhere else. Where do you want to go? Follow the knight's directions?

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

I would like to follow the knight's directions. They are directions after all!

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Well, if B16F is down and we are on B15F, B14F and the Explorer's Guild will be a floor up. So- the choice is Hellfire or Explorer's. Ulrich, in-character, would be curious about Hellfire and their mandates. Ooc, I think securing the only known alchemist around, who works for the Explorer's Guild, is a good move.

You could roleplay in-character group discussion. Topic: down to Hell or up to Explore.

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Once we're away from the knight.

"My interest is piqued: this Hellfire group seems to have at least a chain of command, a degree of professionalism we haven't yet seen. A stabilizing interest in the Labyrinth, punishing sinners... and... oathbreakers....", Ulrich trails off, his expression falling. The cheek around his missing eye twitches.

".... or... perhaps we should stick with the original plan and seek the Explorer's Guild one floor up. After all, their leader is an alchemist, from what we've been lead to believe, which means material support could be a possibility. Yes. The Explorer's Guild sounds better, perhaps they will be friendlier to our reluctant warband, eh?"

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

"I say we talk to both. How about the Explorer's Guild first?"

28/28 HP

"So much 'Hell'...sounds downright unpleasant. I'd rather find the explorer's guild myself."

Male Fetchling Rogue 2 | HP (09/09) | AC 14/<T14>/<F10> | Saves <F+0>/<R+6>/<W+0> | Init +3 | Percep +5 | SMotive +0 Acrobatics +8 (2), Bluff +7 (2), Disable Device +7 (1), Disguise +6 (1), Escape Artist +7 (1), Perform |Dance| +6 (1), Perception +5 (2), Sleight of Hand +8 (2), Stealth +10 (2), Use Magic Device +7 (2)

Ushio takes his eyes off the floor to talk to the group. "Maybe the Explorer's Guild would be the safer option. Though that man appears sane and looks a Knight devoted to something in ernest, t'would be smarter to take the path away from his friends, lest he notifies them some how. His only duty seems to be a guard, not an executioner or assasin like his brothers in arms might be." Ushio looks down at the ground again. "However, he does talk his share about lieutenants and corporals, mentioning as well that there are higher stations. Speculating and paranoia aside, that should decree them some measurable strength that could be our protection for now... even if they may be geared towards violence..." Ushio's words trail off under his breath.

So is the consensus that you seek the Explorers' Guild first? Alright, where do you want to go?

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

"Very good, we shall seek the Explorer's Guild. Perhaps backtracking to the upward arrow on our crude map?"

28/28 HP

"If we follow the knights directions it could also lead us to where we want."

Following the map with Elyna and Ulrich's directions to the "upward arrow", you enter a chamber. Not unlike the bookshelf room in size, this chamber is seemingly empty, aside from a set of stone stairs that lead up. Carefully, you ascend them.

Reaching the top of the stairs, you find yourself in a small room with two iron doors on opposite walls.

Map of the area

What would you like to do?

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Ulrich approaches the door on his right topmost on the map and listens intently.
Perception: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (8) - 2 = 6

"It sounds like the tide! Put your ear against it, you can hear!"

Male Half-Orc Slayer (Cutthroat) 1 | HP (12/12) | AC 16/13/13 | Saves Fort +3/Ref +5/Will -1 | Init +3 | Percep +3 | Intimidate +8 | Stealth +7 | Acrobatics +7 Spd: 30ft; CMB: +3; Rapier +4 (1d6+2/18-20)

Goramar heads to the opposite door bottom door on map and listens.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Since this isn't very active time for players, I'm rolling randomly to see who listens to which door. GMPCing a little to keep this smooth.

Ulrich places his ear against the right-side cold iron door and listens. No sound passes through, and Ulrich hears nothing at all. Followed by Moritat, Ushio and Kekkle, the four listen together. Ushio hears some footsteps from the other side, and whispers to his friends of the discovery.

As Goramar approaches the opposite door, he can smell a faint, foul stench flowing through the door's frames. The smell is exotic enough so it's hard to tell exactly what it smells like, but it's clear the smell is not a pleasant one. Despite the bizarre stench Rilian, Elyna, Pahleg and he listen closely, but none of them hear anything.

female Gnome Kineticist 4 | HP (45(41)/45) | AC/Touch/Flat 18/14/15 | Fort/Ref/Will +9/+7/+2 | Init +5 | Percep +9

That'S a good idea, keeps us informed and the game smooth.

"So our choice is between another insane armsman or whatever is festering behind that door, I presume." Elyna whispers to the others, "I have a hard time telling which one would be less likely to attack us, when we open that door. So let's be ready in either case. I'm inclined to holding off on discovring what that smell is."

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

"Indeed, let us see if we have found another mindless enemy or new acquaintances- to the north!"
Ulrich opens the north door.

Ulrich opens the right-side door... or he would, but the door seems to be locked. Immediately after Ulrich turns the door handle, a female voice calls through the door: "Identify yourselves! The unlocking requires my trust that you are worth the risk that is involved when dealing with strangers."

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

Startled, Ulrich replies through the door.
"I was Ulrich of Ravensmount in life, recently come to this forsaken Labyrinth. My companions are Pahleg of Aurink, Goramar, Kekkle, Elyna, Ushio, Rillian and Moritat. We have been told by a man paying for his sins to seek Felisse and the Explorer's Guild. Would that be you, Madame?"

28/28 HP

"Hello!" Kekkle chimes in.

The voice responds: "Affirmative. Please be aware that I possess numerous explosives and toxicants, so any aggressive behavior will not end well for either party. Unlocking door."

With those words said, you hear the door click as it is unlocked.

The door opens, revealing a tall elven woman on the other side. On a closer look, it is clear that she's a dark elf - a drow. With a flask of unknown subject on one hand and a crossbow in another, she looks at you an emotionless face.

"Please leave your weapons behind and come in. I am intrigued: to whom were you referring to when addressing 'a man paying for his sins'?"

Male Human Fighter 4, AC 20, Touch 10 (12), FF 19; HP 21/41(47), Fort +8 Ref +1, Will 0; Initiative 0; Perception -2, Bravery +1 (+1 saves vs. fear); Hellfire Private (Order of the Bonfire) 3 Con damage

"Very well.", Ulrich says, unbuckling his sword and laying it aside.
"He refused to offer his name. He was quite crestfallen and said he had fallen prey to Hellfire...", Ulrich goes on to describe the middle aged man the party met earlier.

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

Pahleg drops his weapons as bid, coming in with a friendly smile.

female Gnome Kineticist 4 | HP (45(41)/45) | AC/Touch/Flat 18/14/15 | Fort/Ref/Will +9/+7/+2 | Init +5 | Percep +9

Still unarmed, Elyna simply walks inside, letting the others talk for now.

Male Half-Orc Slayer (Cutthroat) 1 | HP (12/12) | AC 16/13/13 | Saves Fort +3/Ref +5/Will -1 | Init +3 | Percep +3 | Intimidate +8 | Stealth +7 | Acrobatics +7 Spd: 30ft; CMB: +3; Rapier +4 (1d6+2/18-20)

Goramar is far more reluctant than the others to set aside his weapons but decides to follow Ulrich's lead and places his rapier and shield in the corner.

28/28 HP

Kekkle leaves the Rapier outside and waves cheerily as he enters. He stays silent, however. He hadn't been present when whoever they were speaking of had passed.

The drow woman listens to Ulrich's description of the man while watching that everyone drops their weapons and comes inside. Once all eight have entered through the door she closes it and sticks a small metal key on it, twists, and withdraws the key. You hear a faint click as the door is locked.

Once Ulrich finishes describing the man, she turns at the party. "I do have a recollection of such a human male. But he and I crossed paths several years ago, eight years to be exact. He and his company of strange misfits came upon my previous laboratory, by accident I presume, bought a few potions and we haven't talked since. The human introduces himself to me as Noil. His band didn't perform the same act, preferring to stay anonymous." She offers you to take a seat on a bench next to a wall. "Please seat yourselves. My name is Felisse, from the cities of Do'anolg. Occupation apothecary."

You look around the room, seeing that it is a very spacious hall. There are multiple wooden tables in the room, with complex alchemical equipment on top of them. Bottles, flasks, vials, cauldrons, pots, containers, jars... and a few tools you cannot even hazard a guess what purpose they serve. The walls of the hall are decorated by sheets of paper that show complex equations and scientific tables.

The hall has two beds, two 10-feet long benches and four chairs. The beds are neatly made.

"My personal studies can postponed an hour or two," she continues. "I'm not a woman to fancy a talk, but my curiosity outshines my introversion. What manner of group are you? Are you part of a covenant? How hungry are you? Any special talents? Where are you headed? Since you mentioned Explorers' Guild, is that your goal?"

Goramar:
You know that the "cities of Do'anolg" most likely refer to an subterranean drow nation. Few surface-dwellers have visited the place, but rumors of its horrors are quite frequently heard on some human cities and towns. Some of those horror stories tell of a mad witch queen who devoured entire cities worth of drow population.

Male Aasimar Cleric 4 | AC 15, Touch 10, FF 15 | HP 35/35 | F +7, R +2, W +8 | Init +0 | Perc +5

"Ah, are you a merchant of magical potions? I'm sure once we find some currency we would be willing to trade with you."

"My name is Lightning Pahleg, cleric of Auorink. Our group is a thrown together one that woke up inside the labrything with no knowledge of how we got in here. We are part of no covenant, unless you considering myself as with Auorink. We can...feel a hunger, although it is not extreme. I am a very good healer. We are headed for whatever can get us out of this maze, and we thought the Explorer's Guild might be able to help us with that."

female Gnome Kineticist 4 | HP (45(41)/45) | AC/Touch/Flat 18/14/15 | Fort/Ref/Will +9/+7/+2 | Init +5 | Percep +9

"We woke up only a few hours ago, finding ourselves in a chamber two levels below, and decided to band together hoping we could find our way out. We also heard there is an organization called hellfire, but their name did not sound like they were likely to give us pointers."

Ushio, Slightly apprehensive about leaving his weapon behind, will squat by the exit door listening for anything beyond, like people messing with the dropped equipment.
