If the mask falls unconscious telthes will finish him unless stopped. While raging he isn't thinking about getting info or anything."

At the temple:
ROUND THREE CONTINUES

Action Summary Thus Far

  • The Greyscale Masker stabbed Telthes.
  • Kintal moved and then stabbed at the Masker.
  • Milo used dimensional slide to begin moving, finished moving and then cast color spray.

Masker's Will Save vs Color Spray: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19

Kintal stabs and blood flows, spreading out in a blossom on the Masker's clothing. No longer is the dwarf assassin monochrome. When the spray of clashing colors leaps from Milo's hand and envelops the Masker, for a moment it seems as if the assassin sways but quickly he shakes off the effect of the spell and returns to the fight at hand.

Round three: Maskers, Kintal, Milo, Telthes.

Milo only:
Before you turned and cast your color spray you will have noticed the open door to your left. On the bed (the red cross token) is Sister Jenya. She's bleeding from a wound in her chest and wrestling with a third dwarven Greyscale Masker who stands over her with a dagger, trying to stab her.

Male Ifrit Paladin 1

Telthes will power attack the mask.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12 for 1d12 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18

In the Temple:
Telthes' axe injuries the temple's floor but not the Masker, who dodges out of the way.

END ROUND THREE

BEGIN ROUND FOUR

The dwarven Greyscale Masker hisses through that monochrome mask. "No one told us this temple had guards!"

The green dot Masker tries to stab Telthes again, then steps back five feet.

Green dot Masker's attack on Telthes: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

The Masker slashes, trying to finish the job and end Telthes. This time, instead of finding flesh, the Masker's dagger finds only the shaft of Telthes' axe.

The blue dot Masker (who Milo can see) tries to stab Sister Jenya again.

Blue dot Masker's attack on Sister Jenya: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

In Sister Jenya's chambers, the dwarven Masker she wrestles with stabs downward. She rolls out of the way and he stabs her bed instead of her.

Round Four: Maskers, Kintal, Milo, Telthes.

Male Ifrit Paladin 1

Telthes will continue to swing.

Kintal wishes to sidestep the Masker, but now wanting to all the vile man to kill him before he is able to cook another meal for the good Sister, Kintal renews his pokes at the Masker.

Attack-rapier: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 <-- possible brit
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Crit confirm: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

The strike easily slides through the Masker's defenses striking a major artery in the man's leg.

If that took him down, then Kintal will use his move to move 30 closer to the Sister to aid her.

Spitting an elaborate Amethystian curse as his magic failed to take hold, Milo only had a moment to ponder his failure as the movement in the next room caught his eye.

"Sister Jenya!" He shouted in alarm, diving into the room. Fearful of the consequences, should the sister fail to resist another Color Spray, he instead opted for a lesser spell to stop the Masker. Chanting and waving his hands around, the motions basic and quick, he cupped his hands and blew through them in the direction of the Maskers head. As his breath left his hands, the air accelerated suddenly, striking the Maskers temple with enough force to elicit a loud slapping thud.

Move into room and cast Daze on Masker. Expending a Reservoir Point to increase the DC by 1 for a total of DC 15. Im assuming Milo hasnt yet replenished his spells since the fight earlier, so he is down to his last Point.

In the Temple:
ROUND FOUR

Action Summary

* The green dot Masker tried to stab Telthes and failed. He moved five feet to the left.
* The blue dot Masker tried to stab Sister Jenya but failed.
* Kintal stabbed the green dot Masker, critting him (though turning him British would also be amusing) for 8 points of damage. The Masker is standing.
* Milo tries to use Daze on the blue dot masker. Success to be determined.
* Telthes swings at the green dot Masker and misses.

Blue dot Masker's Will Save vs Milo's Daze: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12

Milo's spell slams into the dwarven Greyscale Masker. The assassin staggers a step back from the bed, holding his head with one hand, clearly dazed.

END ROUND FOUR

BEGIN ROUND FIVE

The green dot Masker will attempt to withdraw down the stairs. Kintal will end up with an AoO on him because the Masker is moving through a second threatened space (the one to the immediate southwest of Kintal).

Kintal's attack of opportunity on green dot Masker: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Kintal's damage on the green dot Masker: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

As the dwarven Masker attempts to retreat down the stairs, Kintal takes the opportunity and lunges, putting a hole in the dwarf's side. The assassin crumbles and falls, tumbling down to the base of the stairs before laying still.

The blue dot Masker is dazed and unable to act this round.

"Get in here quickly!" Milo shouted over his shoulder, frantically trying to think of what to do. "Im no warrior, but I cannot daze him again. What to do!?" He wondered.

With a sigh of defeat, he then threw himself at the Masker, trying to grab hold.

Grapple: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17

Dropping the dwarven Masker, Kintal turns tail and runs into the Sister's chamber as quickly as he can. Seeing Milo struggling with the Masker, Kintal moves around to get a good angle to stab the horrid man as soon as he can.

Double move, Kintal went sw/nw by diagonals so as to avoid moving next to the man and, thereby, avoiding any AoO.

You horrid excuse for a man. Nobody harms an Emerald healer. This will be the last time you ever lay a finger on one to the Totem's chosen.

"Thank you, we can talk over breakfast."

Masker AoO on Milo: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Somehow, Milo manages to avoid the tip of the Greyscale Masker's dagger as he makes a desperate snatch, grabbing hold of the assassin.

Not that it matters in this instance, since he missed, but for future reference, being dazed means you cannot take any action, which I assume to prohibit AOOs as well.

You are correct, Milo. That's the last time I do an update after exercising so much my head is light! :)

In Milo's arms, the Dwarven Greyscale Masker goes slack, no longer resisting. The acolyte who brought you tea earlier rushes into the room. Brother Ruphus hobbles behind more slowly, using a cane to walk.

"How did this happen?" the acolyte cries in shock, "Our locks are supposed to be some of the best in the city!"

"Never mind that, Mel." Sister Jenya says, softly as she lays there on the bed, bleeding. "One of our defenders needs our help and I am sure our attackers do as well."

"Of course, Sister Jenya." the acolyte, Mel, rushes over to Telthes and gently kisses his forehead, whispering her prayers to Emerald.

Mel's Cure Light Wounds on Telthes: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Telthes recovers 5 hit points, bringing him up to 7 out of 15.

Brother Ruphus moves to Sister Jenya's side and kisses her forehead as he prays to Emerald. Healing energy flows into her. Color returns to her cheeks but she will likely still be recovering for a few days.

"We passed one on the way," Brother Ruphus reports, "Near the hammocks. He had already bled out."

COMBAT ENDS

Milo still has a grapple on the Masker, who has been oddly compliant.

Hmmm, I always buy rope, but appear to have forgotten to put it on my character sheet. I do have a spell component pouch though, which is really useful for a non-spellcaster.

If I can retcon that and purchase rope instead of the pouch, that would be appreciated. Otherwise, Kintal will purchase this stuff in the morning.

Kintal glares at the man.
While I revere the Emerald Totem, if it were my choice, no quarter would be given. Now, it is time to start talking or the authorities may not be able to help you.

Who sent you here? Where is the base where you received these stupid masks? And why were you seeking to murder the healers of this holy temple?

Looking relieved as the situation was finally well in hand, Milo held onto the Masker for many long moments, before realizing the situation he was in. "Uhm, would anyone care to take over? This isnt exactly my forte." He said, looking rather nervous.

While the assassin is wearing a mask, it is clear from his body language that he finds both Telthes and Kintal quite frightening. However, instead of answering their questions he speaks just a few words.

In Rubbish:
"Time to paint my final masterpiece."

The assassin then slumps in Milo's arms.

Despite her wounds and being in her nightgown, Sister Jenya pushes Brother Ruphus away and forces herself to the Masker's side. She pulls the mask off, revealing a beardless dwarf, and checks his pulse. Then she forces open his mouth and peers inside.

"Dead. A hollow tooth filled with poison by the looks of it. He probably used it when you captured him."

Male Ifrit Paladin 1

"Curious that all the attackers were dwarves, and had a poison tooth. These masks are more than simple thugs making some quick money selling children."

"Youd be surprised what the indoctrinated mind is willing to do for a cause Kintal." Milo said with a concerned frown. Turning to the newly arrived brother, he pointed to the hallway. "You said you passed one who had expired, but there should be another, kindly go see if he can be saved, having someone to question about this would be to our benefit." He paused a moment, then called after the brother. "And be sure to not let this one kill himself, dont get him back to conciousness just yet."

He turned to the other two with a worried look. "This all just became alot more serious. As much as I feel urgency, I shall have to complete my rest and recover my power. I fear it will be needed on the morrow."

Acolyte Mel hurries off to check on the final Masker. In the meanwhile, Sister Jenya calls upon Emerald to heal both her wounds and Telthes'.

Cure Moderate Wounds: 2d8 + 8 ⇒ (5, 4) + 8 = 17

And that puts Telthes back up to full hit points.

As Sister Jenya's glowing, verdant light fades away Mel hurries back into the chamber.

"He's gone." Mel says. "The front door is open. I've closed it."

Sister Jenya will call the town guard who eventually do show up and take a statement on what happened. They also haul away the bodies. Assuming the group searches the bodies before that happens, they'll find the dwarves were each carrying a dagger and a vial of some sort of poison. The Masker who assaulted Sister Jenya also had a skeleton key on him. It fits the lock on the front door perfectly. Sister Jenya finds that quite disturbing, obviously, and promises she'll begin barring the door at night as well as locking it.

Telthes, Kintal and Milo, anything else you want to do tonight? Or shall I move you forward to the next morning and a meet up with Dawna and Leiko?

Male Ifrit Paladin 1

I am good to move forward.

Also Telthes really wants to pay the masks a Visit. One that will likely be unpleasant for them.

Ready to move on and join the ladies.

Moving forward.

After the city watch leaves, everyone is able to return to sleep and morning comes without further incident. Not long after sunrise Telthes, Milo and Kintal take a basket full of breads, cheeses and fruits with them to share as breakfast at the orphanage.

For Dawna and Leiko, the night passed without incident. No one attempted to break in and steal children and, when morning comes, a quick head count by the staff confirms that all the orphans are present and accounted for. The kids are just heading down to their morning meal when the men show up with food of their own. You assemble together on the second floor hallway.

Dawna and Leiko, I'm assuming you switched off shifts all night so neither of you is fatigued in a game sense but you're both probably a little tired.

Fair enough.

"Mmm... Hello boys, was it alright over there? We noticed something odd about the locks over here." Leiko begins as they arrive.

[Img] [Info] [Sheet] Female Human Paladin 1

"Good morning Leiko." Dawna yawns but is quite content that the night passed peacefully. She badly needed to catch up on sleep and hoped that the others would appear soon so that she could go find a bed. She waited a moment if someone replied to Leiko's question, while she stepped by her side and gave her a friendly smile.

"Good morning everyone. Hope you had a wonderful night. My beautiful friend here is Leiko, a muse and enchanting singer from Pearl Islands, and I am Dawna of the Queen of Amethyst's Fifth Winged Hussars legion." She paused briefly and cast another look around to get a better impression on the dominant emotion among the children. "Who of you is Jose? Don't worry, you're not in trouble. Our purpose is to protect the innocent; and in my book children are innocent per se, no matter what they may or may not have done."

Dawna, I suspect Leiko is talking to Telthes, Kintal and Milo but...

Dawna:
A small boy, even smaller than the other boys his age, with oversized ears and dark, unruly hair stares up at Dawna in utter awe. Some of the older boys say... things as they pass by. The sort of things that cause duels when a lady is concerned back in Amethyst.

"I'm Jose." the tiny boy says.

[Img] [Info] [Sheet] Female Human Paladin 1

Ugh... alright... forget that comment.

Dawna smiled to the boy. "And I am Dawna, nice to meet you. The night when your room mates disappeared you had a strange dream. Could you tell me about that dream? Don't worry, it can't hurt you no matter what. You can hold my sword if that makes you feel safer. But be careful with it, it's sharp." Dawna kneeled down to him and offered her sword with the hilt first to him though she was ready to interfere should he try to do anything rash with it.

Dawna:
Jose stares at the sword with large eyes. He wraps both hands around the hilt, though his fingertips barely touch when he does so.

"Umm... the evil gnome came and sat on my chest. He does that a lot. I wake up having trouble breathing. I've had that dream before.

[Img] [Info] [Sheet] Female Human Paladin 1

If he had this dream before it was probably not connected to the event. She wanted to ask more questions to make sure, but the boy was afraid and she did not want to bring up more bad memories. "If you see that creature ever again in your dreams, think of me and I shall come along and it. I shall protect you. Do you sometimes have problems breathing when you're not sleeping?" She put a hand softly on his shoulder. Maybe he was suffering from asthma? Or maybe there was a psychological reason why he would be afraid of suffocating?

Milo took the stairs in bounding leaps, racing to meet the women. There was no practical reason for his haste, but all the same he could not contain himself. "Things have escalated, and gotten a great deal more peculiar, or rather, sinister really, I..." He paused mid sentence as he turned the corner into the childrens room, seeing Dawna crouched amongst the children. Stood with a stupid look on his face for a moment, his labored breathing the only sound breaking the awkward silence he had instilled in the room, he scratched his neck. "Uuh, that is to say, I havnt been able to scare up a decent cup of tea, would you believe it?" He mumbled.

Bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 Mostly just for the childrens benefit, Dawna and Leiko should know somethings up...not that the roll would make any Sense Motive particularly hard though..

Dawna will find the young boy does not have asthma or trouble breathing. He clams up when she prods further, looking for a psychological reason for his problems. There's something there, she is sure, but it would take time and patience to draw the truth out of the boy. Eventually, he has to run off or he'll not get any breakfast before morning classes. The kids just sort of rush past Milo. Apparently, food is more important than his words.

And that leaves the hallway clear of everyone but the five of you.

Kintal follows Milo up the steps, his short legs struggling to keep up with the much taller human. When he sees the children charging toward him, he reaches into his pocket and pulls out several pastries he cooked at the temple before he left. They are something that kids in the Emerald Shire always love, flakey pastries filled with a combination of raisins, fresh fruit paste and a chocolate glaze.

He hands these to the children and smiles enjoying the look of glee as the orphans get something that they likely rarely have the chance to experience at the orphanage.

The, he follows Milo into the room.
So, you learn anything interesting? We got to kill a couple of dwarven maskers. They were stupid even for dwarves. We were going to question one, but he poisoned himself first. These guys are seriously screwed up and stupid.

"There's nothing more deadly that a fool. Hard to predict." Leiko gave a slight bitter smile.

"Something odd with the locks. Patterned scratch marks on the inside."

Milo stepped out into the hallway at Kintals words, eyeing the bottom of the stairs where Telthes was still closing the door. "Maybe, and this is just my opinion Kintal, but maybe you would do well to refrain from commenting on the perceived stupidity of dwarves, in the present company." He stepped back inside, relieved that Telthes had not been halfway up the stairs when Kintal had spoken.

"We cannot be sure if they were there for us, or if we just happened to interupt other plans." He looked worried. "Though with our involvement in the streets yesterday, I suspect it is the former, atleast to some extent." He moved to the door, peering inside the lock for what Leiko had mentioned. "Patterned you say? So not from lockpicks?"

"I don't rightly know for sure. I'm not an expert in locksmithing."

Male Ifrit Paladin 1

"regardless the city watch is either to incompetent or corrupt to do anything. Do we have any idea where these masks operate from? As this pattern was on the inside of the doors or inside of the locks?"

"Locks."

Male Ifrit Paladin 1

"some kind of skeleton key perhaps?"

"Maybe. That might be it. I don't know much about locks."

Don't look at me. I know cooking, not lockpicking.

[Img] [Info] [Sheet] Female Human Paladin 1

"Good morning, boys." Dawna repeated Leiko's greeting. "What do you mean a couple of dwarven maskers? A retaliation? What happened, exactly?"

She sighs, and the sigh succumbs to a yawn. "I need some sleep. Anyway, we should look at the locks. If I understood correctly those markings had magical properties. Sooo... if any of you can help with that, that would be most appreciated. Otherwise we'll have to make a copy as accurately and try doing some ... research." She doesn't bother to hide how much she hates digging up evidence in books and files.

"Apart from that... we could try to find an ex-member of the greyscale masks. From what I heard there is plenty of them. While most of them will probably not be willing to talk it would surprise me if there was none at all. Not sure how we're gonna do that. I can't really make a lot of sense of the greyscale masks yet. I wish I knew what they want in the first place. There is no saying whether there is only one greyscale mask organization in this city or everyone who puts on such a mask is regarded as one, or whether it is a loose decentralized network."

She waves a bit erratic with her hand to the door. "Here. Behold: The mysterious bloody lock which is our only in-crystalline* clue yet. Someone make something out of it, please ... Well, sorry, I am tired."

To Kintal she casts a frustrated and somewhat impatient glance, since she obviously gets him wrong. She doesn't seem particularly balanced right now at all. "You're not supposed to pick it, it's already open. Imagine it like someone used a recipe to give the lock a particular flavour. Tell me what the flavour is and it was done. I mean, I don't think one usually scratches a pattern into a lock to pick it. There is more to it than that."

She looks for something to make a sketch on, so she can copy the pattern.

Walking down to find the man in charge, Milo addressed him with as official a voice as he could muster, doing his best to look important in the process. "Sir, it has come to my attention that potential clues towards the safe recovery of the kidnapped children, might reside within the very lock that guards their night chamber." He paused a moment, eying the man before continuing. "However, in its current state we are not capable of performing the proper scrutiny of this clue to ascertain its value." He raised one hand, index finger pointing to the ceiling as he continued, his other hand at the small of his back. "Now, I dont expect you to object to any action that might reasonably recover the children, yet I thought it best to ask all the same." At this point he was pacing, engrossed in his own little display. "Might we dismantle the lock, and unveil the clue that lies within? If funds are an issue, we shall be happy to acquire a proper locksmith, both to dismantle and reassemble the device."

Milo intends to take it to the locksmith who donated it, and hopefully avoid as much of the fee as possible once the purpose of the work is revealed. Rolling a Diplomacy for Milos speech, just in case its needed, and a Spellcraft check preemptively in case its relevant.

Milo finds Mr. Tashykk in his office. He stands in front of an easel upon which sits a canvas... with a surprisingly large eyed version of Dawna painted upon it.

"Woah, man. Like, slow down." Tashykk says as he announces the need to disassemble the lock. "Take apart our only lock? The only protection we could have for the kids? That seems like a bad trip, man. A bad trip."

Psstt... It hasn't protected them so far, seeing the bad guys have keys and all. Bar that sucker. :P
