You got a good heart Paddy. I just hope this doesn't cost you.

Orion nods. "Good to know, Paddy. Alright, 326 Moorewood avenue, aye? Well lets do this. How're we goin' in? We just wanna kick in the front door? Or you want me to scout a bit? If there's a second floor I could tap in, mebbe get us all up there, depending.

All set?"

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

Bas thinks on the suggestion.

"I wanna be ready for a foot race if he bolts, but a bit of recon ain't gonna hurt no one. At least Lamm probably won't run if he spots you. You got my vote for a preliminary scouting trip."

Appearance

Elegad continues staring at the ground and simply responds to the overall conversation taking place around him, instead of addressing anyone specifically. I know my way around. Staying out of sight isn't really an issue for me.

He did however, respond to Orion, tilting his head up as the Ranger spoke. If you go ahead, wanna find a way in above while I find a route below?

Moving over to the food once more, he grabbed another chunk of bread and an apple for his journey, pouring himself a drink of water and thanking the woman in the room before making his way over to the inside of the door.

The group follows the address to Moorewood avenue and finds that 326 is a Brownstone style
apartement building. With a short set of stairs leading up to the main door and and set leading down to a lower level.

We'll say that you all stop a block short to allow for scouting. Orion and whoever is tagging along should give me three checks.

Stealth, Perception and Insight.

Orion frowns at the building. "Did we...ah...did we get apartment number?"

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

As Orion and Elegad slip off to check out the building, Saul waves them back.

"Hold on- what's the signal, though? If you get into trouble in there, how are we going to know? How long should we give you before we come in after you?"

Assuming Orion is casing the place from a street level for scouting info not actually going in.

Orion: You skillfully dip in and out of the shadows moving into an alley or behind a trash receptacle where need be and get a closer look at the place. The front stoop leading into the main door, at the top of the stairs has two people on it. You initially assume that one is an adult and the other is a child, but with that perception roll you can tell that one is a gnome and the other is a human, both male. The gnome seems to be tossing a dagger back and forth, occasionally knicking himself to the amusement of the human. the human has a crossbow slung over his shoulder.

At one point, a bedraggled person approaches and heads down the stairs to the lower level, the two guarding the main entrance barely seem to notice.

The building itself has three floors, with it's first story windows boarded up.

I just need those rolls from anyone scouting with Orion. Is Paddy going with him?

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

If he wants him to. Paddy has pretty much given up trying to get Orion, or anyone else, to do anything -- or even making suggestions -- so he's resigned himself to his fate.

Red Feather, a bit nervous about confronting Lamm, and understanding that the more people scouting, the more likely to be detected, awaits the report of the scouts, from a dark alley within a 60' of the building. His hands sweat, and he seems to have trouble drawing a full breath.

Dark Archive

Orion steps out of the shadows and reports his findings back to the group.

"So we gots two toughs on the lookout. Way I see it, we can either go hard right now an' take 'em out. Or we can try to bluff our way past--that ain't never been mah forte, but, Paddy, you came here to talk, so thems as good a place to start as any.

Or I can shinee up, drop a rope down, an' we start with the top floor. Might not be able to do much talking, all barging in like that, but might bypass a couple few other knife-wielding gnomes.

But that is one of the oddest things I've seen. If they got more a those wouldn't that be something?"

Orion winds down, wondering what the others will want to do.

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saulden scratches his chin.

"It would be pretty smooth to go in through the roof, though I think that the more of us that climb the building, the more likely we are to be spotted..."

"I think we should try to scare off the guards at the front before they can tip off whoever is waiting inside. Just have a little word with them that there are other dealers in this town that don't have a posse out for them, right? And then we don't have to try and explain why a uniformed Guard is there to buy drugs."

"Orion, you and Elegad can take hidden positions so they don't know how many of us there really are- and if I hold up my hand and snap my fingers, Orion shoots a crossbow bolt into the door frame to show them just how serious we are. If I draw my sword, then there's a fight and you guys should join in. How does that sound?"

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

"Not sure anyone working as a guard want to be ratted out as the kind who'll take a bribe. Would never find work again, at least if they aim to stay in town." Bas offers, the gears in his head humming along nicely. He needed that drink. It got him in his thinking place.

"If we start a ruckus, we're gonna be fighting everyone goon in the place. The more we have to fight, the longer Lamm has to make tracks. Unless he's got something he can't leave here, he aint sticking around when someone's coming for his neck. No, I think maybe we take the bluffing route or at least go straight for Lamm's heart of operations. We won't pass as beggers with all this armor and weapons, but if we were running an errand for some prominent official, some fun on the hush-n-hush, that might pass if the guards can be skewed to it.."

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

"Okay, maybe that could work. Who's going to do most of the talking, then? I'm not a great liar, but I can be scary or try to just talk them into letting us in."

Saul turns to Red Feather.
"Red... you don't know these guys, right? Maybe you can say you're an old friend of Lamm's and you're showing us a good time?"

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

Paddy offers timidly, "Why don't I mention to the guards that I'm here to drop off Lamm's cut of the weekly racketeering money? After all, we cops are all on the take, right? Or so many would believe."

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

"Think you can be brash enough about it Paddy? Also, that might get you in, but how do you pass off the rest of us."

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

"Sir Bas, brash is one thing that is never an issue for an O'Donnegal! As to your other question, though, I presume a crooked cop needs bodyguards, when he's carrying all this cash? Or, if we heed my excellent partner here," nodding at Orion, "I can leave you guys here to play with the gnomes while I go get Lamm myself? You tell me."

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saulden nods to Paddy's suggestion.
"We're here to make sure the money goes straight to Lamm, maybe?"

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

Bas nods along.

"Alright, if you're confident about it. Not sure a "secretly" crooked cop would need an entourage of escorts, but maybe it'll work."

"Okay, I'm in."

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

"I have no doubt in our abilities in this endeavor," Paddy begins, then shrugs self-deprecatingly. "But you know they say that no plan ever survives contact with the enemy, and I share some of your reservations. Do we leave a couple people here to make sure we can get out again, if things go poorly? Or do we press our luck trying to convince Lamm that a city cop needs not one or two, but five bodyguards?"

Then an idea hits him, "Unless a lot of copper pieces weigh so much that it takes four people to carry the loot?" Checking his purse, he adds, "I don't know; I've never had more than a few at a time."

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saul checks his coin purse, glancing at Orion's fancy new thieves tools.
"Uh, yeah, I'm cleaned out too. We could get a chest or something..."

"Or split the difference, Elegad, Orion and Red Feather going in through the back and we talk our way in through the front."

Male Human - AC 13, HP 17/17(23), PROF: +2, SPD 30',STR+1, DEX+2, CON+2, INT+3, WIS+5,CHA+0; INSP 1/0; Wild Shape 2/2 Druid / 2 (Circle of the Moon); Deception +2, Perception +5, Stealth +4, Survival +5

"I'm not sure we've scouted enough. What's behind the building, and what businesses are on the sides. I'd like to know the terrain better before I go blundering in. He's obviously moved since I worked for him... nothing looks familiar.

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

Bas shrugs. His braided hair bobs as he plays with the piercing in his ear, feeling the cool tips of the metal before he reached the part heated by his body.

"More scouting could be helpful, but if we're trying to persuade our way inside, it wouldn't be very helpful unless we were still trying to stealth in. But I concede that more info unless we run out of time. Let's try not to burn the night hours while we have them."

Dark Archive

Orion nods as questions are thrown out. "Eh? You want more, eh? Alright, alright, I'll see what I can get...."

Orion again fades into the night and scouts the full perimeter, coming back to the group and letting them know what surrounds the building.

Another Stealth check from Orion please!

The building itself is connected on both sides to the adjoining apartment buildings, so there is no access on it's sides.

Orion thus makes his way around to the alley that runs behind it. There he finds that, like it the front, the windows on the 1st floor seem to be securely boarded up. Above that, though is a rickety old fire escape. The ladder that would reach to the ground is held up by a counter weight, which dangles by a metal cord in the wind brought on by the storm. It clangs against the rest of the fire escape periodically, the only sounds other than the heavy rainfall that pierces the dark alley.

The stairs of the fire escape span levels two and three of the building. It looks as though it once gave access to the top, fourth floor, but that portion has fallen away. The only evidence of its existence, a jumble of rusted metal bars at the base of the building.

*snort* "OH NO! I SEEM TO HAVE FALLEN! AND I FELL RIGHT ON THIS PILE OF UNUSUALLY LOUD BELLS! I HOPE NO HEARD THAT! HEY! HEY GUYS! DID YOU HEAR THAT? RIGHT NOW? RIGHT NOW WHEN I FELL ON ALL THESE BELLS? I HOPE NO ONE ELSE HEARD THAT!"

Appearance

Bashfully approaching Saulden, Elegad hesitantly aired an idea he had.

I could maybe try convincing the guards I have the Plague? Maybe they'll move.

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

"Like most things, that can go two ways. A beggar with the plague, just happening to arrive simultaneously with an unannounced bent cop and his bodyguards? That would surely raise an eyebrow or two. But if you tried it first and it worked, we could follow you in with none the wiser, and our more audacious bluff wouldn't be needed."

"Maybe... but wouldn't they try to run you off and keep you out of the building in that case?"

Saulden looks Elegad over for a second.
"And do you need a weapon, man? I can spare a javelin for you, I can't see us not needing it."

DM Screen:

Orion creeps through the alley weaving in and out of shadows, but as he approaches the back of the building, his foot catches a stray piece of metal from the fallen fire escape.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

He curses for a moment, but doesn't have long to chastise himself as a wickedly taloned hand slashes past his face. Orions eyes trace the impossibly long arm back to the shadow under the fire escape, where a an apelike purple creature glares back at him. It's eyes glowing red with malevolence.

Orion go!

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

"So what's your drink of choice?" Bas asks his comrades, patiently waiting for the stealthy Orion to return.

"Ale is a fascinating staple, but spirits are wondrous at the right temperatures."

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saulden is peering through the rain, as if he could catch sight of Orion by leaning a little closer.

"I'm usually just an ale guy- the church doesn't usually like me drinking too much- but when I was on the Mission in the Cinderlands the Shoanti had this stuff made from cactus. It tasted pretty gross at first, but I started to like it by the time we came back."

Dark Archive

Some preternatural instinct tells Orion to somersault to the right, just under the lurking creature's claws!

Spinning back to the monster, Orion looses iron quarrel from his weapon!

Attack!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Damage!: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

Orion grins darkly, a good shot by any measure.

"Uh, guys, I could use some help! Like, I'm in the alley and the, uh...ah, the zipper is stuck! I, uh, need someone to help me out!"

Good plan. Right call.

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saulden rushes toward the alley, casually.

Deception to look casual: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

"Not again! We're running late!"

Appearance

In response to the priest, Elegad cut in a little abruptly with his correction; It wouldn't be as a group. It would just be me, alone. I could probably lure them away and give them the slip.......probably.

At Saulden's mention of a weapon, Elegad shook his head and looked towards the ground once more.

Wouldn't know how to use it anyway. I get by as I am.

Remaining silent through the drink talk, El's sharp ears picked something up. It was Orion and things hadn't exactly gone to plan.

Umm, I think that Ranger guy needs help.

As Saulden rushed ahead, El kicked the ground, sighed and casually followed with a slightly brisk walk.

With a loud 'Thunk' the bolt slams into the carapace of the creature and it lets out a shriek. The well placed projectile must have drained the fight from the thing, because it scrabbles up the building and over the roof, leaving only a blood trail behind as evidence that it was there.

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

Paddy checks out the entrance to see if the commotion has drawn the guards away.

Hearing the creature's shriek and finding Orion in one piece, Saulden pauses before saying, "Oh jeez... that's a pretty serious zipper problem there!" loud enough to be overheard.

Would we be able to climb up to the fire escape from the ground?

The two guards stop what they are doing for a moment, but don't go anywhere.

Would we be able to climb up to the fire escape from the ground?

The ladder attached to the fire escape is suspended in the air, held aloft by a counter weight. You could theoretically pull the ladder down if you had a way to grab it.

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

If Paddy gets an inkling of what anyone is thinking of using the ladder, he cautions, "Might it be a tad too convenient to have a supposedly overlooked way in? Were I a clever villain, I would create just such an apparent entrance, make sure it was no such thing, and trap it with all kinds of nasty surprises. And while we can all agree on a series of increasingly unpleasant adjectives to describe Lamm, it seems that 'clever' must unfortunately belong on that list as well."

Dark Archive

Orion nods his thanks. "Thanks guys. That could-a been hairy!"

Then Orion frowns. "Well, we haven't exactly been storming the trenches at the front door. Our best plan seems to be the star-crossed and un-honeyed-tongue Elegad luring two tough and loyal guards away from the door because he's so very diseased. No offense meant, good Elegad, I just think that if we can't find a way...we must make a way! Besides,"

Orion pauses to scan the fire escape,

"Alright lads, lets go get us a bad guy!"

Orion stalks up the fire escape, crossbow at the ready, quiet as he can.

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saulden shrugs.
"Okay, well, in we go.", he says before following Orion up the ladder.

As Orion and Saulden begin to climb the escape, the whole metal structure begins to groan. It seems stable with just the two of you, but any additional weight could lead to disaster.

The first catwalk of the escape brings the duo level with a pair of double hung windows. Though years of grim have rendered them too opaque to see through. A metal stair leads up to the another catwalk and the third floor windows.

Dark Archive

Orion crouches down, and motions Saulden to stop. He leans close to the paladin and whispers, "Do you want to see what's in here, or should we continue up? Perhaps if we go to the roof we'll be able to finish that thing that attacked me. What say you?"

HP 11/20, AC 17, Saves: Wisdom +3, Charisma +4, Initiative 0, Passive Perception 11, Passive Investigation 9, Inspiration [X]

Saulden also crouches, his armor and weapons jangling.
"Let's start at the top and move down. Once we get in, we can motion the others up."

M Human Cleric 2 (AC 15, hp 14/16, Percept +3, Invest +1)

You've got to be kidding me! There is no way Paddy would take such obvious bait -- the "secret notes" were bad enough.

Paddy hides his badge and better displays his holy symbol. "By your leave, I'll stay back a bit and see if your ruse works, Elegad. If they merely send you away with threats, I can always claim to be ministering to the sick, and so allay their suspicions. If things go worse than that... I can perhaps intervene more forcefully on your behalf."

Male Variant Human Artificer/ Alchemist 2

Apologies for the inactivity, work weekend was hectic. A bit confused and could use some clarification on who's where and doing what. From what I've read, Saulden and Orion are going up, but Paddy is choosing to remain behind. Not sure where Elegad is since he mentioned going to help Orion when he was attacked.

Bas returns to Paddy's side, not wanting to leave the man alone as his stelathier comrades clambered up the building.

"Not too familiar with this part of town, but are creatures of such kind common in this area? And Paddy, as much as I side with you on the err of caution, I feel we'd be stronger in our goal if we were all sprung a trap together, rather than be split like this. You and me won't be muscling past those guards, and it'll take time to reach the others should trouble spring up. Likewise the reverse is true, and we'll be ducks in the mud if we're ambushed."
