GM Jol |
Having survived yet another foray by so-called adventurers into your snarl, you all have been summoned by Chief Koba-Jol. The bodies of tengus lie around you as they await to be picked clean of gear and goods by the tribe’s artisans in the main chamber before the throne room. Four kobold guards stand at attention in front of the entrance and you can hear talking from the other side of the tapestry covering the entryway. The sound of every day life in the Jol snarl can be heard echoing down the three tunnels that join into this room
You know Oleed is the keeper of the eggs
Feel free to start roleplay here while we wait for others to join in

hmm I wonder why these bird people have the chief all fired up. I think I best stand in the corner and look unimportant. Perhaps let Toki Jol handle this one.
Stigly grabs the nearest basket of radishes and slinks off to a corner to start his lunch.

Yulantegoni approaches the hut with her head held high, her mighty Serpentine Eidolon to her side.
"Sounds like our Chief is angry, and rightfully so. Give way guards, I was summoned here."
Yulantegoni will push her way past the guards with a bit of righteous indignation. If she is halted she will wait under protest offering mild insults so to the importance and urgency of her meeting with the Chief.

Torphrex waits for the other to make a move, and the try to sneak pass the guards, and try to see what the chief is angry about, as inconspicuously as he is able.
Stealth Check: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

The guards stop Yulantegoni as she tries to push into the room, ”He will see you shortly I assure you.” Nodding absent-mindedly as she protests, but glad she doesn’t protest further than that. While they are distracted though, Torphrex manages to slip around one and peek into the room to see Chief Koba-Jol berating Oleed at his failure for the safety of the eggs. Before Torphrex can manage to gain any information though, the chief pushes past Oleed, past the guards and faces the room.
”Finally some competent members of the clan, and a thanks to Laknir as well. If you haven’t heard, during the last bout with surface dwellers someone was able to steal a third of the tribe’s eggs apparently unseen. I don’t need to stress how detrimental this is to the safety and future of the tribe. I’m counting on you five to find the eggs, return them to safety, and deal with whoever is responsible.” The chief continues before anyone can remark, and with a tone that while it may sound like a request it is an order. ”Our chief cleric Toki-Jol has discerned that the eggs are now in the forbidden temple underneath the southwest portion of our snarl. While Zedoran has forbidden us from entering the temple, Toki assures me we may enter this one time. Although Zedoran himself has said after three days he will purge the temple with fire whether you make it out or not. “
Snapping his fingers his attendant, a youthful kobold with overeager eyes springs forward clutching a bag. Opening it, you can see potions and vials as he offers one of each to everyone. Koba-Jol addresses the group again ”This is what we can spare on such short notice, a potion that will heal your wounds, and a vial for the undead that Toki assures me rests in such a temple. When you are ready please tell my attendant here and he will escort you to Toki who is waiting for you at the temple’s entrance”
Koba then turns and heads back towards Oleed who looks to be trying to cower behind some rocks. As the curtain falls, the chief’s voice once again raises in anger about how anyone could ever fall asleep at such an important post.
The attendant takes you to Toki who is waiting by the door. ”Welcome, once again you must become heroes for the Jol clan. I can attempt to answer any questions you have before you enter. Know this though the door will be locked behind you as Zedoran has decreed. This will help you get past the seal when you are ready to leave and to get through many of the ancient seals in the temple itself. Be warned, this chime has only five charges and once they are used, you will not be able to get out. The chief has the utmost confidence in you, and so I shall to. Ask any questions you may”
You have each received a potion of cure light wounds and a vial of holy water. The group has also gotten a chime of opening with five charges

Slightly perturbed that his attempt at avoiding the assignment failed, Stigly stuffs as many radishes and bits of chicken into his pack as he can carry (only about 4 pounds as his backpack is already quite full).
I cant believe I actually have to go on a mission. You would think Koba would send his good cleric, Toki-Jol, on such an important mission.......unless he doesn't actually think we are going to make it out alive.
With this thought Stigly begins to sob and shriek
"AHHHH! Poor Stigly isn't important to Jol clan. That's why poor Stigly is being sent. All hope is lost. We're all going to die"
Yulantegoni |
"Nonesense Stigly! This is your chance to prove your might! I for one am pleased to be chosen for a such a vital mission, it is obvious to me why I was chosen. You need the best, and I will give that to you. Come fellow clansmen, we can not keep the Mother waiting for her eggs."
Yulantegoni will turn and begin towards the door to the forbidden temple without hesitation.
Torphrex the Clever |
"We are talking about the eggs, so I don't think we are beign disposed off. The Chief really wants those eggs back, and I am glad he thinks we are the best choice to get them. Toki-Jol, do we know how many enemies are there? What are they? Why they want our eggs for?"
Laknir Kii |
Laknir decides to speak up finally.
I, uhh, have noticed that sometimes on the surface, people sell eggs. Usually farm animals, but maybe someone paid for ours? Mmm He looks down briefly before continuing. Disgusting. Kidnapping is still wrong no matter who you're taking from. Yulantegoni? May I take point? I feel it should be my duty to stand between my allies and danger.
Stigly the Divine Diviner |
Stigly begins to gnaw on a radish to comfort himself.
Oh dear what a fool I have been, now they all know what a cowardly whelp I really am. I must redeem myself.
bluff: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Yes *sniffle* Torphrex you are quite right. I*sniffle sniffle* I was just testing you all to see how brave you are. You all passed, except you Talnip. Koba the great would *sniffle* never send we great warriors on a suicide mission. Well this is a holy temple, and I am a divine cleric. It would be best if I led the way.
His whole body shaking in fear Stigly marches to the front as he barely forces the words to come choking out of his throat.
I think I pulled that off pretty well. Now the will all think of how brave I am and what a coward Talnip is. Oh I hope I don't die last. That would be scary to be down there all by myself. I hope I don't die first either. The middle, I'll die in the middle. Probably after Laknir and Yulantegoni, but certainly before Talnip.
Stigly is so preoccupied with trying to work out in which order they will die, that he forgets to look for danger when they finally do descend into the temple.
GM Jol |
Toki sighs again at the exchange between Stigly and the group. Looking towards Torphrex, "The great Zedoran only tol dme that there would be undead in the temple. Beyond that, I would just recommend you keep your eyes open. No kobold has set foot in there for many years. If you guys are ready, I will open the door." Taking out his keys he starts to unlock the door. Ahead, the group can see a five foot wide spiral staircase descending into darkness.
Need a marching order down the staircase as 3 of you are currently trying to be in front. If you can't decide between the three of you by late this evening or tomorrow morning I will just put the ones with highest dex modifiers first as they were able to scurry into the opening. People who have sent me emails have been invited to roll20 and the map is up and running. You start about 2/3 of the way down and in the middle left to right. Should be able to see your characters and the staircase
Torphrex the Clever |
If able, Torphrex will be safely in the middle of the group.
GM Jol |
The door is shut behind you as the group descends 60 feet into darkness. As everyone's eyes adjust to the black and white spectrum of darkvision, the front of the marching column reaches a landing that opens into a 30' by 30' room. Before anyone can see more than that there are 3 doors in the room Talnip is set upon by an unkown assailant.

Thin, hook-lined tentacles stretch out from a black octopus shaped creature, sinking in around his neck as it attempts to strangle the life out of him.

Torphrex rushes aptly in, jumps off a wall around Talnip, and lands on the other side slightly up the staircase. Trying not to hit his fellow clansmen however requires most of his attention when he swings at the beast and can't even grab the creature's attention.

Yulantegoni attempts to cloud the creatures mind, but if it took hold, the creature does not seem to notice. GM Jol |
As Talnip falls unconscious, Torphrex is able to land a blow against the creature's organs. Stigly stepped into to staunch the bleeding of his comrade. Before the darkmantle could finish poor Talnip off, Laknir and the Herald, with help from his master, shred the darkmantle into gory strips that get flung around the room.
Combat is over, Sitgly I did not convert your spell into a heal, I'll let you decide how to heal Talnip. He is stable but still unconscious.
In the 30' by 30' room you can see that old carvings cover the walls of this square chamber, thick with dust and cobwebs. Three sets of stone double doors stand in the three facing walls. Heavy bronze seals emblazoned with the symbol of Pharasma secure the doors against whatever lies beyond.
If anyone tries to open any of the three doors, the symbol of Pharasma will shine brightly before fading, the door not budging.

He goes to check the graffitti...

He ponders for a minute...
"Maybe a clue to open the doors?"
Laknir Kii |
Someone wrote that over these other... things I can't really identify. Does that mean there are others down here? As far as the doors go, isn't that why we have the chime?
Edit: Adjusted for kobold ninja.
Stigly the Divine Diviner |
As previously noted Stigly will use rebuke death on his unconscious comrade to heal for 4 hp.
Stigly crouching over his companion, Talnip, well repeatedly smack him on the forehead saying "By the power of Sarenrae I compel you to wake up you lazy coward."
If i keep calling him a coward maybe the others will forget about my little episode just a minute ago.
Stigly will continue to use rebuke death untill Talnip is no longer at - hp. Take the healing from the rebukes in the order given after healing 4 from the initial rebuke.
rebuke death: 1d4 ⇒ 4
If I did my math right, that should bring you to 2 hp. -8 initial + 2 from clw + 4 from 1st rebuke death + 4 from second rebuke death= 2
See, Stigly was right. It not the cowards time to die. He dies last
Torphrex the Clever |
Torphrex starts thinking about...
"So maybe the door opens the other way around..."
He first checks for traps or devices that unlock the door from this side.
Disable Device Check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
If he is unable to find anything, he tries to open the door not by the side the hinges should indicate to, but the other way around. If they don't bulge, he will examine them again, taking his time.
Taking 20 in a perception check, so 27 in total.
GM Jol |
Stigly did bring him conscious, was just reiterating :).
Torphrex tries a few different ways of opening the door, but each and every time, the seal will glow brightly before diminishing again and the door hasn't moved. Looking over the entire door, he finds no cracks, no hidden latches, and the door is much more well kept then the walls surrounding it.
Since it didn't matter all doors will have the same effect, but which door are you looking at Torphrex?
Torphrex the Clever |
The middle one, but now I have another idea...
Torphrex looks confused.
"Maybe they are magically locked... but maybe there is an order the door should be tried."
He looks at his companions.
"What about trying the left door first, the right door next, and the middle door last? Let's get one of us in front of a door, and try in sequence. If that doesn't work we can try right-left-center, center-left-right and so on..."
He stays in front of the middle door.
Laknir Kii |
Alright, I'll follow your lead now. Nothing else in this room is going to try to kill us is it?
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Assuming he doesn't find anything, he takes up the left door.
I guess we're trying to save the chime for later?
