Wolvie lets go of his "treat" and mauls the other guy some, while Cricket dances around with his staff in a cultural spectacle (but fails to connect). Jaegr, appreciative of their efforts but not really impressed, steps forward smartly and ends the merriment -- and the would-be sniper -- with a single decisive downward blow.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Sorry in advance for stepping on toes:
Kelgan Save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

I remember Kelgan saying he'd have a reduced opportunity to post coming up: this should cinch it. The hill dwarf, caught off-guard by the pretty colors, stands there and stares at them, mouth open.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Cricket, then Wyvurn, then Caspian.

Male Hill Dwarf Fighter 5

No worries, Kirth.

Kelgan's standing and gawking at all the shiny lights.

Full-on two-handed Cricket action!

Wyvurn will attempt to pummel the dwarf still standing at the top of the stairs attempting to reload.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Cricket mercilessly clubs at the prone bandit, inflicting a variety of bruises and minor injuries. Wolvie bites the hell out of the same victim, shaking him in his mouth and rendering the bandit unconscious.

Meanwhile, Wyvurn, standing just outside of the greased area, catches one of the reloading snipers by suprise. He follows a solid crack on the jaw with a quick uppercut, knocking the crossbowman out cold.

Caspian - you're up!

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

There's one crossbowman prone on the stairs, reloading; standing behind him is the gnome in the conical hat.

@conehead the boneheaded

Slingstaff (or just sling) 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage 1d3 ⇒ 3

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Caspian clocks the gnome with a sling bullet, doing minimal damage, but definitely getting his attention!

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

The remaining bandit, apparently more dedicated than his fellows, carefully draws a bead at Kelgan and fires again.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 221d8 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12

This provokes an attack of opportunity from Wyvurn.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

The sniper's determination to slay his original target proves to be his undoing. His attack against the entranced Kelgan breaks the fascination effect, allowing Kelgan to use his shield to deflect the bolt. Had Kelgan remained heavily wounded, he would not have been able to succeed at this (given the -3 penalty to AC), but his wise action in taking a breather, in this case, preserves his life.

The small gnome, in a fury, incants a spell; a spray of jarring colors erupts from his hands, catching both Wyvurn and the unfortunate sniper in its cone.

DC 13 Will save
Sniper: 1d4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 2 = 4 The prone bandit is blinded and stunned by the blast.

Wyvurn has been hit with this effect before, by the way, by the corrupt marshall back at the inn where the party's adventures began.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

As this occurs, the rear door bursts open, and two bandits with tower shields force their way in; they're holding hand axes. Behind them is a tough, evil-looking, black-bearded hill dwarf bandit chieftain, who scowls and lifts his hammer.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Jaegr can still act this round. Kelgan, freed from his fascination, starts the next round, followed by Cricket, Wyvurn (if not dropped by the color spray, and Caspian. Poor Obmi and his two bodyguards can't react as fast as you guys do!

You can also hear timbers collapsing upstairs, and a couple more would-be snipers come staggering down the eastern staircase from the second floor, kerchiefs over their noses and mouths. They look to be overcome by smoke inhalation, and are not able to fight.

"Hey cone head. I'm too hard headed for your cheap tricks!"

"Howdy hammerhead and shields, welcome to my pig roast."

Jaegr quickly scans the situation, his tactical mind working as always. He realizes that his previous movement, to the base of the stairs, not only allowed him to kill falling bandits, but also put him within a single move of the rear door. He wonders if, subconsciously, he was anticipating needing to reach it quickly? In any event, the two shield-bearers are a tempting target for something tricky. He'd have to line it up just right -- this isn't something he'd try all the time! -- but he thinks that if he smacks one of them just right, he could use that target's tower shield to help him rebound, and use the momentum ro swing at the other guy as well.

Jaegr moves over planning to use his Pick Axe on the first shield bearer and use then his momentum to carry over to the second. However the shield bearers were prepared for the move and used their stout shields to prevent all put a passing blow.

Power Attack with Crushing Blow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 Crushing blow is half damage on a miss now?

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

The first shield-dwarf blocks Jaegr's attack with his shield, although the impact alone is sufficient to injure him (light wound). Unfortunately, his block denies Jaegr the momentum he needed for his second strike.

Since I didn't down him do I burn the Grit point to use Cleave? Or does the intent not count since I didn't have the opportunity to use it?

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Jaegr:

Spoiler:
Looks like I neglected to mention whether spending grit is a swift, immediate, or free action. Boo to me! I'll have to issue an erratum.

Thinking about the options, would almost have to be an immediate action, so that you can interrupt other stuff with it (e.g., force rerolls), but that means if you'd already used your immediate action(s) for the round, you'd be unable to use grit. Come to think of it, I'm probably OK with that. The other option would be as a free action, I guess, which technically you could spend anytime on your turn -- it wouldn't chew up an immediate action, but it also wouldn't allow you to force opponents' rerolls, either. On the whole, I'm leaning towards having it be an immediate action. Thoughts?

If it's an immediate action, you could declare it after hitting -- in effect interrupting your own hit with the additional effect -- and if you missed you'd just not spend it. If it's a free action, you'd declare it whenever you want to during your turn (presumably right after you hit the guy), so same deal. And I don't want it to require a swift action. So either way, it looks like you can save that point for later.

Male Hill Dwarf Fighter 5

Kelgan shakes off the enchantment with a curse and catches the bolt squarely on his shield. Still shouldering the unfortunate elf's body, he moves up beside Jaegr and slams the shield down on the floor.

"Burn!" he bellows, and embers fall away from the front of the shield in a glittering cascade. The shield catches fire in an instant, and tongues of flame reach out hungrily, engulfing both bandits and their chieftain. The flames extinguish almost as soon as they form, leaving long curls of smoke trailing upward from the shield.

Shooting Embers: 5d4 ⇒ (4, 2, 3, 4, 3) = 16 (15' Cone, Ref DC 12 for half.)

Move up next to Jaegr. Enter Combat Expertise stance. Standard Action command word activate shield.

Kirth:
I think Immediate Action works. That would carry over to Hero points as well then as an immediate action. Of course that would mean you could only spend 1 grit or hero point on your turn?

Otherwise you could do a free action on your own turn, but an immediate when it isn't? or is that too complicated?

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3
Jaegr "Knock Knock" wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Spoiler:
No, that works -- you could spend as many as you have immediate actions left, and since you get additional immediate actions/AOOs at BAB +6/+11/+16, that keeps pace with your grit acquisition.

Obmi Reflex: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 10 + 2 = 23

Obmi's shield guys bear the brunt of the cone of embers from Kelgan's shield, and look slightly worse for wear (lightly wounded). Obmi sneers as if it's nothing to him.

Cricket's up.

Male Goblin Druid 5

Cricket orders Wolvie to release the unconscious bandit and help him tag team the one still standing.

Handle Animal 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13

Male Goblin Druid 5

Cricket then tries to position himself so he gets flanking bonuses with Wolvie. I'll include them in my rolls, but if the map prevents them, just take 'em out:

C: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

W: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Male Halfling Bard 5 (Minstrel)

Yes grease under the bandits and Obmi, not under his.friends and starts an inspiration....

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

No need to worry about the map; if you're attacking the same target, just spend an immediate action and you give one ally flanking/aid another.

Cricket and Wolvie bound up the steps to support Wyvurn. Cricket solidly whacks the would-be sniper *one-two!*, and Wolvie finishes him off. The little gnome gibbers in terror.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Shield Guys Reflex: 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 - 1 = 23
Obmi Reflex: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 = 14

The shield guys, even wounded, are too solidly planted to be affected by Caspian's grease. Obmi himself was almost caught off-guard, and if he'd been wounded you'd have gotten him, but he retains his footing as well.

The gnome, terrified of the leering, shillelagh-swinging goblin and the savage, foaming-at-the-mouth wolf, incants again.

1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

There now appear to be four identical gnomes on the staircase, separated from you by a 5-ft. stretch of greased stairs, two unconscious bandits, and one stunned hobgoblin. Comically, as soon as they pop into being, all four gnomes slip as if on a banana peel, and all end up prone.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Meanwhile, the two (slightly-singed) shield bearers take immediate action to flank Jaegr, the most immediate threat.

1d20 + 3 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 + 2 - 1 = 121d6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 - 1 = 41d20 + 3 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 2 - 1 = 151d6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (3) + 2 - 1 = 4

Their efforts are feeble, and they resolve to devote themselves to better aiding their chieftain next round, if they survive that long.

Meanwhile, Obmi himself, about to throw his hammer, reconsiders this action given Jaegr's proximity, and wades into melee himself. Almost belatedly, you notice he's got a pick in his off-hand, which he viciously hooks into Jaegr's gut before bringing the hammer down:

1d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 331d6 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 161d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 161d4 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 141d20 + 14 ⇒ (12) + 14 = 261d6 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 151d20 + 14 ⇒ (19) + 14 = 331d4 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14

45 points of damage before DR, if any.

So it looks like 3 hits, so that would be 39 Damage total? (16-2)+(15-2)+(14-2)=39? Can they flank me if Kelgan had moved up before? (Not that it mattered in this case.)

Can I use my grit to gain an immediate attack just after he steps up but before he attacks? If so, I'll roll two attacks here

Power Attack with Crushing Blow: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24

Jaegr reels from the three blows, unused to being bested in this way. He shakes off the pain, knowing he doesn't have long before he succumbs to his wounds, plants his feets and returns another blow. Stone stance takes me out of Heavy Wounded and into Light Wound if the temp hps count. If not, subtract 2 more from my To hit and damage in the second attack

Fort Save for Heavy Wound: 1d20 + 8 - 3 ⇒ (18) + 8 - 3 = 23

Power Attack with Crushing Blow in Stone Stance: 1d20 + 10 - 2 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 10 - 2 - 1 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 16 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 16 - 1 = 23
Temporary Hit Points: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 6) = 11

Status AC 26 HP 14/42 (11 Temp)

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

1. That's what I count as well -- 45 - (3*2) = 39.
2. Yes, that sounds like an excellent use for grit!
3. On gridless combat, any two people meleeing the same target can flank/aid another (same mechanic) by spending an immediate action and declaring who they're assisting.
4. Using a move action to adopt your stone stance was a very smart move here, and the temp hp can nudge you back to operating as if you were only lightly wounded.

Jaegr, expecting a concentrated assault, pre-emptively strikes with his pickaxe. Obmi's chainmail takes the brunt of the blow, however, transmitting only some of the force to the wearer. Half damage from your Crushing Blow.

After Obmi's devastating combination -- two savage pick attacks and a follow-up from the hammer -- Jaegr plants his feet, grits his teeth in his beard, and swings again. Unfortunately, Obmi's mail again takes the worst of the blow. You're getting a lot of mileage lately out of the half damage on a miss from armor/shield thing -- I like how it's working!

---

Kelgan -- you're up. Hopefully you can quickly intervene and save Jaegr's life...

Male Hill Dwarf Fighter 5

Kelgan's mind races, as he is unwilling to drop Lyssa to draw his weapon. He digs into his pocket and pulls out a glittering orb. He waves it in Obmi's face and pulls back behind his shield.

"Hey Obmi! Looking for this? You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands, you impotent asshat."

Maintaining Combat Expertise and entering total defense. Hopefully Obmi will divert his attention.

Caspian does the only sensible thing he can think of in this situation he attempts to cast his net upon the mythical/rare/endangered Obmi...

Ranged @ Obmi
Net masterwork 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Ranged touch attack, entangled condition

"Wonder what the zoo will pay for one of these!"

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Let's call the real gnome #1:
1d4 ⇒ 11d4 ⇒ 4

Cricket swings at what he assumes is an image, only to find his blow deflected by a field of force. Meanwhile, Wolvie savagely mauls one of the images into non-existence; his onslaught is so powerful that he catches another image in the aftermath and that one winks out, too, leaving one image and one real gnome to deal with.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

Caspian's net settles firmly on top of an enraged Obmi. The powerful dwarf is entangled and doesn't even seem to realize it yet.

Coldly, he strikes at Jaegr with the pick, despite the impediment:
1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 14 - 2 = 321d6 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 141d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (5) + 14 - 2 = 171d6 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15
Confirm crit: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 14 - 2 = 323d6 + 33 ⇒ (4, 4, 3) + 33 = 44
(14-2 = 12) + (15/2 - 2 = 5) + {44-2 = 42) = 59 more damage to Jaegr -- use a hero point to force Obmi to reroll the 1st attack!

And, seeing Kelgan's taunt, he attempts to hurl his hammer at Kelgan, but being entangled in Caspian's net prevents him from having the manual dexterity needed to fight effectively with two weapons.

Edited to correct for entanglement in net.

M Goblin Beer Snob 1/Freethinker 3

The remaining shield guy charges at Kelgan:
1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (8) + 3 - 1 = 101d6 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (5) + 2 - 1 = 6
Slip on grease? 1d20 + 3 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 + 2 - 1 = 13
He manages to begin his charge, but then slips on the grease and ends up prone instead. Caspian has spared Kelgan from yet another attack!

Obmi: 1d20 + 10 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 + 2 - 2 = 12
Obmi would have been fine, except for the impediment of Caspian's net. As it is, he is forced to draw on his own grit to keep from falling prone: 12 + 1d6 + 1 ⇒ 12 + (2) + 1 = 15, and succeeds in catching himself. He is now VERY angry at Caspian!

Obmi? He doesn't appear to be.

1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 14 - 2 = 321d6 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGHHH!
Confirm: 1d20 + 14 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 14 - 2 = 243d6 + 33 ⇒ (2, 2, 1) + 33 = 38

Jaegr, seeing a near-certain death-blow coming from the upswing of that vicious pick, desperately draws on his last resources to twist away. Obmi's blow still connects solidly, but thankfully not in an instantly-vital spot. (Failed to confirm crit this time.) Still, the blow comes close to knocking him out of the fight.

Damage: 16-2 = 14 more, for 53 total. Including the temp hp from his stance, Jaegr is now at exactly 0 hp.

Jaegr's turn remembering to save vs. Endurance to avoid knocking himself out if he acts. Then Kelgan, then Cricket, and then Caspian can come up with still more ways to completely ruin Obmi's day!
