Jaegr "Knock Knock" |
Jaegr hefts his pick axe, checks his armor, then turns to the others. "I'm not sure what to expect once we get to the keep, but it probably won't be pretty. Those that can be stealthy may want to circle around while those of us that aren't,", Jaegr looks to Kelgan, "can follow me as I approach keep. I'm hesitant to send Wyvurn or Cricket up ahead alone even if they are stealthy as I don't want them ending up like the birds."
Looking back to Kelgan, "So did Lord Fenrift say anything about the cultists who took their daughter? Things may get a little crazy once we get to the keep"

Caspian chants an old halfling poem that seems to fit the situation as they pause by the birds......
Jabberwocky
By Lewis Carroll 1832–1898
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”
He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
Kelgan Cragbelly |
"I'd heard Lord Fenrift's daughter was missing back at Fenrift Keep. The garulos we encountered earlier knew nothing of her. If she had been kidnapped for ransom, the news would have spread through the Highlands - how else would her kin know to pay up? No, it is these cultists that have stolen her for some nefarious purpose. They have hidden here, where no sane traveler would go, to work their foul magic in secret."
Kelgan nods at Jaegr's plan and keeps pace with him.
Jaegr "Knock Knock" |
"Well we can hardly walk away now, though I wonder how we are going to get inside the keep unless it is rundown somehow. Let's hope evil cultist don't employ evil masons or evil carpenters!"
Jaegr lets those who are stealth move off the side in the trees/undergrowth, or anything that might help them move hidden and then he'll move towards the keep, ready for trouble.

Well, everyone succeeds!
Wolvie's fur stands on end, and he starts growling and backing up away from the ravens.
Cricket's spirit sense starts going off like mad.
A pair of wisplike, disembodied twists of darkness come streaming in with the wind. They're about human-sized and have glowing red spots where their eyes should be. They look hungry.
Initiative: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Wyvurn |
Wyvurn, contemplating the odd feeling he has of the keep this whole time, nearly slips away as Jaegr suggests before the spirits rise out of the corpses.
Initiative: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
I am traveling again OCONUS this time starting tomorrow. Hopefully I can get a few posts in beforehand. If not, may be away until next week. As usual, just as what appears to be a tough fight starting
Kirth Gersen |
Jaegr quickly sidesteps, causing the monster's rush to miss. Kelgan is not as agile, however, and the thing's chill touch begins to suck the life from him!
1 point of negative energy damage and 6 points Con drain, dropping it to 12 and your max hp to 30 (current 19); DC 17 Fort negates the Con drain.
Wyvurn |
Wyvurn will step around to flank with Kelgan to try and help with the spirit sucking the life out of him. He will channel his ki in hopes to be rid of the thing quickly.
Longsword flurry: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 251d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 181d8 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (6) + 4 + (4, 5) = 191d8 + 4 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 4 + (1, 2) = 8
Incorporeal: 1d100 ⇒ 971d100 ⇒ 32
Jaegr "Knock Knock" |
Is incorporeal half damage with magic weapons or 50% miss chance?
Jaegr sees the creature pass through Kelgan's armor like it wasn't there so he slips into a more defensive pose try to avoid the hit rather than letting his armor take the brunt of it.
Power Attack with Crushing Blow with Combat Expertise: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 10 - 2 = 23 Ignore 2 Points of opponent's Armor Bonus- probably not applicable here.
Damage: 1d8 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18

Kelgan Cragbelly |
Kelgan howls in fury as the dark spirits rake him. He bashes his shield frantically, dislodging embers in a sparking arc. Then, the front of the shield catches fire in a flash, sending angry orange flames out at the spirits. He tries to get both spirits without burning his allies, but he will likely singe Wyvern or Jaegr in his haste to kill the terrifying creatures.
Burning Hands(DC 11): 5d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 1, 4, 4) = 18
Kirth Gersen |
Wyvurn quickly steps in and lashes at the spirit that struck Kelgan.
* TWF/flurry applies a -2 attack penalty, so adjusted attacks are 23 and 16.
* Ki channeling should probably work like the Arcane Blast feat, for +2d6 +1d6/level of ki power used; if you use a 1st level ki slot, that's +3d6.
* For some reason, incorporeal doesn't seem to give a 50% miss chance in PF anymore; non-force attacks simply deal half damage instead. Go figure.
The first blow rakes along the being's essence. The physical slash has little effect on the thing 10/2 = 5 damage, but Wyvurn's channeled ki energy lashes at the monster's very being: 9 + 1d6 ⇒ 6 = 15 points force damage, for 20 damage total. The spirit wails in pain!
Kirth Gersen |
Caspian's holy water follows close behind; the edges of the being's outline turn to smoke amid a hissing sound where the blessed liquid splashes it.
Jaegr deals 18/2 = 9 damage to the spirit attacking him.
Kelgan's gout of fire spews from his shield, catching all of the other melee combatants in its cone.
Wraith Saves:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 51d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Jaegr "Knock Knock" |
Jaegr senses Kelgan about to unleash the flame and manages to sidestep enough to not take the brunt of it. Unfortunately the creature he was attacking mirrored his movement and managed to avoid some of the flame as well. "Well at least this forge armor has absorbed the heat, it doesn't feel any different."
Reflex Save: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 7 + 2 + 2 = 13 +2 to save vs spell and +2 save vs fire

Adjusted hps in status bar. However HPs is not my main worry in this fight! ;)
Also had a great idea to use grit to obtain Ghost Strike for a round, but not high enough level for it to really help yet!
Kirth Gersen |
Wolvie, hair standing on end and growling in his teeth, plants his paws in the ground and adamantly refuses to approach the wraiths, despite Cricket's promises of treats.
Handle Animal/wild empathy (DC 25): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17.
Cricket will therefore need to dismount and cast the spell, then run up and touch one of the wraiths next round.
Kirth Gersen |
Sorry, Kelgan, don't want to start the next round without some idea of your status, so rolling your Fort save for you. Apologies in advance if it fails!
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
You can spend a hero point as an immediate action to add +1d6 to the roll, making it into a success instead.
Kirth Gersen |
Kelgan is unable to shake the life-draining monster, and is subjected to another attack. 1 point negative energy damage and DC 17 Fort or 3 more Con drain; if fail that'll put you at Con 9, max hp 22, current 20.
Jaegr is miraculously able to continue avoiding his assailant; possibly the gods of his people (dice gods, more like!) are watching over him.
Wyvurn's up.
Wyvurn |
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21
Was hoping to be flanking so I didn't apply the -2. If that wasn't the case, make sure I get into a flanking position this time.
Wyvurn does his best to dodge the fire but remains in the thick of things with the spirits. Again, he channels his ki into his weapon in attempt to dispatch this evil quickly.
Longsword flurry: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 271d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Longsword flurry (confirm if applicable): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 141d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Longsword flurry (confirm if applicable): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 181d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Just checked and it doesn't look like incorporeal creatures are immune to crits unless I am missing something
First Attack: 14/2=7
Second Attack: 14/2=7 so 14 physical total
Force Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 3) = 14
Force Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 2) = 8
Not sure if channeling ki affects all attacks that round or just one
Kirth Gersen |
Just one, and I'd originally considered making it a [strike] effect but decided that would probably be overly-restrictive.
Wyvurn neatly steps to the side, avoiding the worst of the flames and putting himself in the best location to flank the spirit. His crystalline sword hums through the air, vibrating with repressed energy. His first blow unleashes the fury of his ki and the dread spirit dissolves in smoke, unable to maintain its essence -- the remaining wisps of its form blow away in the breeze, never again to haunt the lands of men and dwarves.
Pivoting quickly, the hobgoblin neatly executes a precise backhand slash at the other wraith; it also strikes true, eliciting a low wail from the thing. 7 more damage to that one, for 12 total.
Jaegr "Knock Knock" |
Jaegr has no luck connecting with the incorporeal creature as he is more worried about avoiding its blows than his attacking.
Power Attack with Crushing Blow using Combat Extertise: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 10 - 2 = 10 Ignore 2 Points of opponent's Armor Bonus

Kelgan Cragbelly |
Seeing the ghosts claw right through his shield, he discards it. Then, Kelgan adopts a defensive pose to dodge their attacks, finding the motion awkward and unfamiliar.
Praying that the Duke's enchanted glaive will harm the spirit, he swings away with a two-handed strike. He automatically compensates for the weight of his shield, and without it hindering him, his swing goes wide in the other direction.
