Larisa laughs as she dances, casting her cares by the wayside, dancing alongside the satyr as the alcohol burns her inhibitions away and goes to her head. Taking the bottle from the elder fey with grin, the compulsion making her drink much faster than she normally would, Larisa looks her dance partner over as he dances his jig. Not one to be out done Larisa slides up to him, brushing her hands over his shoulders and pulls the fey into a modified dance she was taught in her youth by her family. The music stiring up thoughts of her grandfather and exile which she quashes down, losing herself in the moment even as her eyes tear up. "Come fair sir fey, surely you would not let a lovely lady like myself dance alone?" She says with in a giggly tone, not registering the words of her companions as she tries to forget her pain, in her drunken state choosing to ignore the possibility of never seeing her estranged family or her new found friends again.

Don't mean to whine but how does the thing move and then attack twice? I am worried that I will not be much use in this fight as I doubt I can sneak attack the thing and have started way closer to the water than I ever intended.

Init order: Raff, Melianse/Olhydran, Connor, Ezekial, Seres, Veronica

Round 1

Connor rides out and then wheels around and prepares for the charge.

Seres casts a defensive spell. Veronica instills Erastil's divine energy on Ezekial.

Round 2

Raff drinks another extract and becomes noticeably bulkier.

Melianse glowers at Seres and then calls out to the skeleton in a strange tongue. The skeleton raises its armored fist for another punishing assault on Ezekial, but then pauses it attack.

Melianse then addresses Seres. "Very well then elf, consider this your last warning. Restore the grove or I will not be so mercifull next time. I suggest you speak to the dryad druid, Tiressia. You may find her northwest of here. I pray that your comrades treat her with more respect than they have treated me. Worry not for your friend, you will be taken to her once you have completed your side of the bargain."

Larisa:

Your head starts to spin and darkness begins encroaching on your vision. The satyr stops his dancing and looks at you intently. "We will spare you since you wear the Green Man's insignia ... and you dance well. Take the path east and cross the bridges - you will find the portal you seek."

Your vision goes black and you feel yourself hit the soft grass.

The next morning you wake to the pleasant chirping of birds and the smell of juniper trees. The grove is completely empty. The satyrs, as well as Greaves and Aeron, are nowhere to be found.

Dm:

Slowly sitting up as she looks around at the abandoned grove, the weight of what occurred sinks in. They're, gone. Taking a deep breath she gives herself a once over, keenly aware of the reputation held by satyr's for debauchery. With a sigh of relief she confirms that her honor was still intact and all her gear where she left it.

Pulling herself onto her knees she grasps the ankh around her neck. "Green Man, Deadeye, I know those men probably deserved what is to become of them and their actions on themselves. I pray whatever fate befalls them is merciful."

Standing, checking her gear as she does, Larisa flips the hood of her cloak up and with one last look around she takes the path east. I failed to keep my word, I can't let that happen again.

As she leaves the grove a thought occurs to her that brings a smile to her lips. They were impressed with my dancing, and my tutors said I was a waste of time. I wonder how Connor dances.

It's terrific that information was just made available to us."

To Melianse, "Remind me again, my lady, what you set the terms of "our bargain" to?"

Connor's thoughts and memories that he will share once we've left:

Initial words to her, Connor:

""I don't think there will be any killing ... Corax ... or any more charming ... ma'am," the cavalier states calmly looking at each side in turn.

"I'm sure we could help mediate a reasonable compromise, though. Allow us to introduce ourselves. My name is Connor Lake, and these are my closest friends and companions, Seres, Larisa, Veronica and Ezekiel. We hail from New Hope, on our way to meet some old friends up north. Wouldn't mind getting to know our neighbors. Who might you all be?"

Larisa's initial words

""Seems pretty cut and dry sir, they tried to cut down these trees without giving proper respect to the land. Maybe we can find them a grove that's not under fey protection so they can leave this place in peace."

Zeke's initial words

"Seems the land was clearly owned before the jacks showed up. Ezekiel adds. Why do you men think you have the right to cut trees here? Do you suppose you own the entire forrest? Perhaps you have some writ or charter?"

Seres's initial words

""Indeed. There are plenty of open lands to find timber. Knowing there are so many fey in the region, a wise man would check before swinging an axe!"

He walks over to the edge of the water. "I am called Seres. What is your name, child of the First World?"

Melianse's initial words

"My name is Melianse. I will tolerate your presence Seres, but not these others. Please, dispose of these fools and then escort your friends away from my pond. The presence of so many humans despoils these pristine lands."

"These humans will meet their fates today if they continue to desecrate these woods. Direct your friends to stop these loggers ... or they can join the tree killers in the depths of their watery grave!"

The unilateral bargain ... i.e. extortion

"There will be no leaving by any of you until compensation is rendered. I demand that these ancient trees be replaced or restored. Or ... you will pay with your lives. Which will it be, fools?"

"Exellent, you have chosen wisely. I care not how you restore the trees - but the grove must be brought back to its former condition. You collectively must repent for this grave crime."

She stares at each of you and snickers. "And, because I know all too well how little your kind can be trusted, I demand collateral. One of you shall wait here with me. Together, with these two pathetic human tree killers, we shall discuss the evils of human civilization and the glory of the first world. Once the trees are restored, your comrade may go free. That is my condition - it is non negotiable."

Who showed the lack of respect and why is she changing the terms of our arrangment to go to her versus being set free. I don't trust her?

Story Narrator

Melianse smiles coldly at Connor. "You will restore the grove that your kin destroyed and I, in turn, will allow you to reunite with your comrade."

Larisa:

The east path continues through the woods and leads to a series of bridges that cross over clear rivers. As you cross the second bridge, you see a pair of draconic eyes regarding you from just below the water. The beast has scales of sparking blue that capture and reflect the light in scintillating patterns.

Beyond the second bridge you see the grove where you intially teleported into the garden. A sad, inhuman voice groans from the grove. "Help! Please help me ... "

Thanks to both you and Erastil for your healing magic Veronica. That is a disconcerting thought. Can we ever get comfortable with such a maline creature living so close?

Veronica replies, "Of course, happy to help. As for Melianse... I don't know. I'm trying to find a way for us to be peaceful neighbors but she seems... really malicious. I think her value set is so skewed compared to ours that it's hard for us to interact - to her people are valueless, but trees are priceless. But she's not the only one of the Fair Folk in this region - if we can't learn to live next to them, it's going to be tough for us to settle these lands; children getting kidnapped, people's milk and eggs being spoiled as pranks, folks disappearing into faerieland through mushroom rings... that's why I keep trying to find some way to settle these problems peacefully. If we wind up antagonizing all of the Fair Folk it will be a big problem and possibly one we can never solve - not to mention we still have these cults of the Old Ones and other monsters all across the countryside. Best not to fight multiple wars at once, right?"

She pulls herself awkwardly up onto her horse and calls for Moondancer to heel, then nudges her horse up next to Ezekial's. "Worst case, if we cannot make Melianse happy, then we have to destroy that thing and possibly her, and deal with the repercussions... and we can't let her keep Larisa, either. So we have to succeed. We have to talk to this dryad, figure out how to fix this, and get Larisa back. She's counting on us, and so is the future of our fledgling country."

Well then Raff got a 31 on knowledge nature, curse you pathfinder and your odd skill allotment.

Story Narrator

Raff:

Dryads are tree-fey who prefer secluded woodlands far from humanoids in need of lumber. Dryads’ main interests are their own survival and that of their beloved forests, and they have been known to magically coerce passersby into aiding them in tasks they cannot complete. They are more likely to be friendly to non-evil druids and rangers, as they recognize a mutual respect for or empathy with nature.

A dryad is mystically bonded to a single, enormous tree and must never stray more than 300 yards from it. Most dryad trees are oak trees, but other trees function as well (often having subtle influences on a specific dryad’s personality and appearance). The dryad is vulnerable to cold iron. The dryad is able to meld with their trees.

A strange, beautiful woman that has flesh made of wood and vibrant hair that resembles leaves and blossoms steps from the tree and walks to the pool of water. She kneels by the water’s edge, weeping softly, her tears falling into the pool to create tiny ripples in the still water.

She then looks up at each of you and then addresses Seres. "Greetings Seres, disciple of Ng. I am indeed Tiressia. I have heard rumors of your settlement and of your fued with Melianse. All your sins will be forgiven if you are willing to help Falshos and I. Our stretch of the Narlmarches has recently fallen victim to the depredations of a most insidious predator. We cannot hope to defeat this creature on our own."

A battered and bruised satyr steps from the tree line behind you. He eyes you warily. "The predator is a scythe tree, an evil, intelligent, carnivorous plant that particularly relishes the taste of dryad flesh. We have tried to drive away the malevolent plant numerous times by ourselves, but the monstrous tree has repulsed our attempts to destroy it or drive it out every time. During our last attempt, I suffered grievous injuries before we could flee back to our grove. Tiressa is unable to abandon her bonded oak and the other forest fey will not risk their lives to help us. If you can destroy the scythe tree, we will assist you with Melianse."

Larisa:

In the grove you behold a large coach wood tree near the teleportation portal. The tree has eyes, a face and arms - you know this to be a treant. The treant watches you intently with tear filled eyes as you approach. "You survive still! Thank the heavens - I thought surely the fey would have slain you. My lady, you are my only hope. The Green Man says that he will take us home if you agree to help him. Reverse the path that we took to the satyr glade and you will find his door. Please, waste no time!"

You recognize the voice to be that of Corax.

I too will help, but I fear my particular skills in combat will not be very useful. If it is a tree it likely lacks discernible anatomy that I can target for extra damage, but I will try. If it not very mobile then perhaps hit and run tactics and range attacks can prevail?

"Hit and run? You're speaking my language" Connor hoists his lance.

"I'm thankful of an adversary that I can see and understand. Although we cannot undo the blight and devastation this has already caused, we can certainly prevent it from causing further harm, my lady."

Connor hesitates and then adds, "Know this, and I feel I can speak for all of us. We would aid you even if Melianse wasn't holding a knife to our throats. It's the kind of thing good neighbors do. And that is what we wish to be."

Raff nods at Conners words as he speaks them, looking to the sayter as he finishes Raff adds. "If you give me a bit of time I could cook some stuff up to really put the hurt on this thing. Defoliant, stuffs like poison to plants." Raff glances over to the dryad and her bonded tree. "Keeping it far away from you of course, my lady."

Veronica ducks her head for a moment after Connor speaks up, then she softly clears her throat and with a serious look says, "If it's an angry tree, maybe we can focus on some fire."

Ezekial:
Since you are next to Veronica, you notice that after Connor makes his comment about being good neighbors and doing the right thing, Veronica ducks her head but can't help but smile. It reminds you of the times that she's said the same thing before - and it seems that it makes her happy to hear the group's ostensible leader say the same.

Tiressia nods and attempts to smile. "Thank you for your assistance. I shall owe you a dept of gratitude."

She frowns at Seres. "Unfortunately, I am unaware of any weaknesses that the scythe tree may possess. We have found it nigh unstoppable. Perhaps your steel weapons and magic will prove more effective."

She then points to a path winding south through the trees. "The creature resides in a blighted area of the forest next to the Murque River. Follow that path and you will come to it within a day. You are welcome to spend the evening here in my grove before you set out."

She then turns to stare sadly at the sun setting in the west.

Larisa:

You follow the path west past the satyr grove, around the pond and past the hedge maze and rose arbors. When you come to the cross roads, you turn left and follow the path to a large oaken door set within a rocky outcropping. The frame around the door is covered by creeping dog-rose. From the space beyond the door you smell the strong aroma of hops and barely.

Once away from Tiressia and her companion Ezekiel recommends Its a tree. We gotta use fire. I do not want to burn the forest down, but fire has to hurt it. And axes. Lets all get axes.

Seres accepts the offer to use her grove as a camp, finding a comfortable nook in the ground clutter to set down his bedroll. "Why do you mourn, lady?" he asks Tiressia when there is a quiet moment.

Veronica says to Ezekial, "There's a spell I could prepare called sun metal that might help. It will cause your weapons to burn with a fire that hurts your foes but not you." As the team sets up camp in the grove, Veronica drops her backpack under the dappled leaves, unrolls her bedroll on some grass, and takes the opportunity to stretch out by a tree.

"Nice to enjoy some nature that's friendly," she opines.

As she approaches the door Larisa's natural suspicion creeps up on her. Cautious, she casts a couple spells and moves to knock on the door. "Hello, my name is Larisa. May I come in?" She calls out, eyeing the plants around the door way as she tries to smell what's on the other side of the door aside from the barely and hops.

As the evening fades to the ruddy glow of dusk, Tiressia joins Seres as you prepare to bed down for the night. "A darkness creeps across the land. The scythe tree is but the latest symptom. Your nemesis, the bandit lord, is another sign of the cancer destroying the forest. He has established a theocracy to the north dedicated to the worship of the outer gods. Their influence will only quicken the spreading blight."

Larisa:

Larisa smells the earthy scents of plants and fermenting hops as she enters the Green Man's abode. As you walk in you notice that it is full daylight within the cave although no shadows are cast. The room is about 40 feet square. In it are as many tables and stands as can be fitted without making progress to the two doors at the rear impossible. One of these doors is to the left of the back wall and the other is to the right. On the tables are jars, bowls, retorts, mortars, crucibles, alembics, gallipots, boilers, bottles, spatulas, ladles, spoons, pipettes and massive tomes with ornate spines. Along the sides of the walls large kettles of liquids boil and churn over fire pits of glowing embers. The room is so crowded it is difficult to know where to look first.

Crafting weirdness:
Don't know a fair DC for crafting defoliant, stuff isn't listed, so I'm just gana roll and you tell me. I'll add 10 in order to feasibly get 2 or 3 in a day.

To the best of my knowledge, so long as I beat the DC, we take my roll times the DC and depending on how much it surpasses 1/3rd of the items price in silver prices we can cut the time it takes to craft it.

Raff diggs around in his pack for a while, grabbing bottles, beakers and vials of strangely colored liquid. "Hey, anyone that ain got nothin too do come with me. Some extra hands are always good." With that Raff, with arms full of glass bottles, walks a good distance away from the tree and starts mixing.

Craft alchemy (Defoliant): 1d20 + 14 + 1d6 ⇒ (14) + 14 + (1) = 29 +2 per aid

Anyone that joins Raff:
Raff is awfully chatty as he works, though he is still laser focused on getting the mixture right. "Thanks for the help, stuffs my passion but I rarely get the chance to practice in lieu of hunting down bounties. Here hold this."Raff hands everyone present a large bottle made of thin, smokey glass. "Everyone always see's the cloak and falchion and thinks "Warrior" not "Scientist". I can see why, but it does affect the work I get."

Mixing two vials together one of grass green goo and the other a pitch black watery substance he dumps a small amount of both into one of the smokey bottles. "Hopefully I can turn my streak around. Always wanted to own a alchemical wares shop, maybe I'll try and set one up in new hope? If Conner'll have it of course." Raff pours the granial contents of another vial into another smokey bottle.

It'll sure be nice to kick up my feet after this is all through though." Raff floods the cintainer with the grains in it with water, It fizzels a bit. He then takes the fizzing battle and a funnel and pours it into the green and black concoctio. "Gods I love alchemy." He whispers to himself as a small gout of flame erupts from the mixture before settling down. Raff turns and smiles " Now onto step two!"

Larisa looks around the room, overwhelmed by the organized chaos around her. She hovers around the room, curiously examining the various implents around the room. Though she avoids touching or picking anything up, thinking it rude and unwise. "Hello. Is anyone here?" She calls out as she deftly weaves around the clutter toward the door on the other side of the room.

Such a spell sounds wonderful. Ezekail responds with enthusiasm. Will it work on ranged weapons as well as melee? I worry that getting close enough to attack this tree would necessarily put us under its boughs and very much in harms way. When Veronica unrolls her bedroll Ezekiel almost slyly unrolls his next to, but not too close hers. He looks about the trees with suspicion.

Veronica sits up and rummages through her pack, takes out a brush, and starts brushing out her shaggy hair. Moondancer comes over to the foot of her bedroll, makes two circles, then flops down.

"It only works on melee weapons, sadly," says Veronica, "And I'm sure you're right that those tree boughs could be pretty long. I can temporarily make your bow magical, though, if you like. Or I can cast that protective spell on you and place sun metal on your knives." She struggles with a few tangles and brushes her hair out by hand, undoing a few knots.

Should have said "shyly" above. Not slyly . Grr. Sorta spoils the effect.

Either could work Veronica. I hope we will have a chance to spy this thing and study it for a moment before we have to fight it. but will we be able to immediately tell it from any other tree? When Veronica begins to brush her hair Ezekiel offers I had sisters. Would you like some help?

"Oh, sure, thanks," Veronica says in response to Ezekial's offer. She sits cross-legged and holds out the brush. "Don't be afraid to be a little rough - it can get pretty tangled."

"So, sisters, huh? How many? Did you grow up on a farm, or in the city?"
