Kingmaker AP with a twist. Gone are the capricious fey, taking their place are the Gods of ancient madness. Welcome now to the altar of Nylarthotep, Yog-Sothoth, and all their brethren. Nilgh'ri vulgtmah Cthulhu, ya lw'nafh llll Cthulhu!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I am interested in running the Kingmaker AP with a significant modification to the overall plot. I do not enjoy the fey aspects of the story, so I propose replacing those protagonists, and their schemes, with something from the Elder Mythos/Dark Tapestry. I also plan to make a few tweaks based on the accumulated wisdom found in the Kingmaker forums here on the Paizo site. The location, relationship (and potential conflict) between Brevoy/Restov, growth of the realm, and other core components will remain essentially unchanged.

Posting Rate:
I am looking for players who can consistently post every 2-3 days. I am not able to update every day, nor do I expect players to do so.

Submission Requirements:
1. Character build with stats, alias not necessary at this time.
2. Who would play your character in the film version?
3. Writing Sample 1: Tell me why you decided to submit this character (i.e. I love a rogue who wears rouge, never played sorcerer before, think a druid influencing a new realm would be fun, etc.)
4. Writing Sample 2: Give me a short character background - hometown, dreams, family, etc. This should be a taste of who the character is - leave me wanting to know more! But keep it short, more than 5-6 sentences is probably too long.

Character Creation:
Resources: All Paizo acceptable. 3PP needs approval, please ask.
Abilities: 20 point buy, no stat below 7 to start.
Races: Using core races + aasimar, tiefling, ifrit, oread, sylph, undine is greatly preferred. Yes, you can use something else, but I will take a max of 1 character from a race other than those listed.
Classes: Any, but use Unchained if you swing that way.
Hit Points: Max 1st level, 1/2 max+1+Con for additional.
Skills: Background skills will be used.
Alignment: No NE or CE; CN and LE will be tough to sell.
Traits: 3 traits, 1 from Kingmaker, no drawbacks.
Starting Wealth: Max starting gp.
Equipment: No exotic crazy stuff please. Haramaki, I'm looking at you.

Other important character info:
Feats: All characters receive Combat Expertise, Deadly Aim, Power Attack, Unarmed Strike, and Weapon Finesse for free at 1st level. These may be used even if the character does not meet the prereqs (i.e. Int 13 for Combat Expertise, Str 13, +1 BAB for Power Attack).
Sanity: You're already in the asylum, you just don't know it yet.
Characters may not be related to Houses Rogarvia or Garess.

----------

Here are some general questions I use to make selections. This is not a comprehensive list, but hopefully provides some idea about how I approach the task of choosing characters:

  • Were all submission guidelines followed, and is the submission complete?
  • Is the character appropriate for the AP and story?
  • Is the character well-rounded, and able to contribute in multiple facets of play (combat, diplomacy, etc)?
  • Am I interested in seeing this character grow and develop?
  • Will this character work well with others I've selected?

Let's end submissions on Sunday, October 1st at 10am EST. I'll make selections later that day.

Feel free to post here or PM me with any questions.

Nice

Cthulhumaker? sounds quite interesting.

Liberty's Edge

Tentative dot. Would Spheres of Power be acceptable as a 3PP system?

played by a young Bruce Campbell

Personal Reasons:
I want to see an Ash like character in a Cthulu game. After getting to 2nd level Barbarian and taking the calm stance rage power he will dip 3 levels into Gunslinger (musket master)

Background:

Ashlund didn't start out as a Barbarian. Instead he was an apprentice to an alchemist / gunsmith. Unfortunately one of master's bills was paid with by an old book which his master promptly discarded. But Ashlund was intrigued. The pictures were hideous, but somehow compelling and in the darkness of the night, Ashlund poured over the book, digesting its contents. It drove him mad and he was driven out of the city into a life of banditry. Eventually he was able to overcome the madness and broke with his bandit buddies and has come to the nearest town to start over.
But the rage still lurks beneath the surface.

Nice. I was in a kingmaker campaign but the GM bailed. Would really like to have another go. Dot.

I'm fine with Spheres of Power. I won't be using SoP with my NPCs, but I don't have a problem with PCs using the system.

I'm also fine with psionics, so specifically, Psionics Unleashed and Psionics Expanded, correct?

I have never had the pleasure of playing with the sanity rules. I will see if I can come up with something good.

I am more tired of the Fey and I love the Elder Mythos stuff, my live table does not so I do not get to mess with that much

I am in a tradition Kingmaker, though it is still in the very beginnings. Still level one. Will that be an issue?

If not then I have a few questions that will let me figure out what kind of character I want to make.

Is this adventure mount friendly? I would hate to pick a Cavalier or mounted paladin and only get to fight from horse back once or twice.

Would a summoner be allowed? And if not how do you feel about the summoning spells? Some people simply hate it.

How are you planning to run combat?

How do you feel about romance popping up in the game? Either between players or with an NPC.

Is this game going to be leadership friendly? Kingmakers seem like the idea game for it. If it is allowed am I limited to only picking a person or could I get some sort of cool beast?

Is there a preference on sexuality? Not all GMs want to deal with subjects such as Homosexuality or even Heterosexuality. Preferring that simply stay out of the game. Is it a bigotry that happens in game?

Speaking of bigotry, is racism a thing that will happen in the game? I personally do not mind it in a game though many do since this is an escape from reality. I find it to be another enemy to fight.

Sovereign Court

Heh, I'm in a KM game that is already doing this! It's pretty um, different. :)

Interest. I has it.

Variant heritages and abilities for Aasimar/Tieflings?

Dotting for interest.

I have never played kingmaker before, but from what I understand you start off working for some of Brevoy's noble houses. Would a character from Molthune who's ultimate, long term goal would be to create a normal, healthy, fledgling province that just so happens to be loyal to someone other than viable?

Basically, how much do the PC's "own" their "kingdom"? I've got no interest in playing a character who wants to subvert his own settlement for selfish gain, and that wouldn't be fair to the rest of the party. But how plot critical is the party's tie to Brevoy? I basically don't want to create a character who's going to upset the plot.

As for class, still have no clue.

I present Eliran Lebeda! Definitely more a role playing character, than a roll playing character, but he will play his part in combat!

One quick thing: path of war from dreamscared press, yea or nay?

This looks interesting. I'll have a submission up tomorrow night.

Writing Sample 1 :

I've always wanted to play Kingmaker. The setting and story is engaging and unique. I am also a fan of the swordlords of Brevoy. They have style which is lacking from other regions.

As for this character in particular: I find that anyone going into the lost lands must either be desperate, or in search of something that they can't find in more civilized lands. I see Nolekai as being a man who is out to prove to himself that not only can he be a swordlord, but that he is more than his 'tainted blood.' He seeks to make a name for himself. To be someone more than he was born as. And an expedition such as this is the best way for him to do so.

Writing Sample 2.:

Nolekai swung his sword again, using one hand to bring it over his head and to then bring it down in a controlled chop. Holding it out in front of him, heads of sweat dripped down his metallic skin. In front of him was a shield, shined to the point where it would sparkle in the sun. It also reflected his image back at him.

On the surface he was hideous. Or at least he thought so. His skin, which had hardened when he was young. The horns which he had tried to shave off, and had failed at so many times. He was ill-made. He would have been run out of town several times over if it were not for his silver tongue. Lying, coercion, intimidation...it all came so easy to him. More times than he could count he had turned would-be abusers into friends with a friendly word and a ready smile. A smile which hid the ache in his heart when he saw his form illuminated in the terrified eyes of strangers.

His father was a swordlord. But he was old, was half-blind, and was far too stubborn to admit that his prime was long gone. He has poured all of his love into Nolekai. Not with words, but with the only language he knew. The blade.

Nolekai swung the sword again, and then switched to the other arm. And as he did so, he thought to himself that it was time. Time for him to leave his father's academy, and to prove to the world, and himself, what he was truly made of.

Playing a would-be aldori-swordlord. As I see it, studied target it great for reflecting a duelist, who has fo size up his opponent. Also important to me was great face skills, for a campaign like this.

Level Plan:
Sanctified Slayer Inquisitor: 1-4
Vanguard Slayer: 5+

This way I only lose 1 Point of BaB, which is important for a Swordlord. This combo will also give great initiative. And plenty of teamwork feats...which will actually be useful due to solo tactics.

How problematic would it be if I'm running a Kingmaker game? I like this adventure, and an Elder Mythos version sounds fun.

Sovereign Court

Dot. I have a cavalier I would love to play in kingmaker. I will fill in all necessary steps once I return home.

Given the Cthulu-esque setting, how do you sit on the Occult stuff?

PS: part played by Michael Fassbender or Damian Lewis, but without the action hero confidence!

Appreciate all the interest so far. Going to answer some questions below.

Also, I'm not concerned if you have played or run Kingmaker (or are currently in a game!). It's been out long enough that I figure everybody on the Paizo PbP boards is familiar with it anyway, so it's not an issue for me.

Deaths Adorable Apprentice

Quote:
Is this adventure mount friendly?

IMO, yes. May not be able to get charges off every round, but off-hand I'd say that ~60-70% of the combats will be in open spaces where a mount would be available.

Quote:
Would a summoner be allowed?

The Unchained version.

Quote:
How are you planning to run combat?

Characters post what they want to do, I summarize the round including enemy actions.

Quote:
How do you feel about romance popping up in the game? Either between players or with an NPC.

No problem with it as long as both players are cool with it.

Quote:
Is this game going to be leadership friendly? Kingmakers seem like the idea game for it. If it is allowed am I limited to only picking a person or could I get some sort of cool beast?

Yes, it will be Leadership friendly. Possibly on the beast, depends on how the game goes.

Quote:

Speaking of bigotry, is racism a thing that will happen in the game? I personally do not mind it in a game though many do since this is an escape from reality. I find it to be another enemy to fight.

I won't be focusing on these themes during the game, but not going to just block them out or ignore them.

Dodekatheon
Yes, variants are fine. You can choose, no need to roll.

Michael7123
I do not think your proposal is out of line. In my experience, I have seen far more characters who dislike Brevoy than the other way around. In thinking about it, I cannot honestly remember even one that was actively working to unify the new realm with Brevoy.

I'll look at Path of War today or tomorrow. Never used it myself so want to review it.

JDPhipps
No problem at all.

Paizo Fan
Very comfortably, it's like one of those really big Sumo bean bag chairs you can just lounge in for hours without moving. Strongly approve.

Do you approve as much if it's a Lawful Evil Fetchling Mesmerist who plans on using their life on the streets in order to carve out a position of power?

Sovereign Court

One,two,three,four!:

1. Character build with stats, alias not necessary at this time.
"I have this cavalier I dream of to play"
2. Who would play your character in the film version?
"The young Erol Flynn, please. He has the right panache, good looks and charisma and also the physical stamina."
3. Writing Sample 1: Tell me why you decided to submit this character (i.e. I love a rogue who wears rouge, never played sorcerer before, think a druid influencing a new realm would be fun, etc.)
"Who are the greatest heros of fantasy? Who hasn´t heard of Arthus, Parcival and Lancelot? Or Charlemange? Or Sparrowhawk and his companions? More recent, Sir Loras, Sir Arthur Dayne or Barristan Selmy, but also Jamie Lannister and Lady Brienne. Or Storm Brightblade! Always knights.
But also most of those are men who have their flaws! And they work hard to overcome them. Be it age, love to a queen who is married to someone else. They have their tests and they endure!
Kingmaker is the Cavalier AP, the one that seems to be made to play the Knight in Shining Armor, ready to sing songs of chivalry?"

4. Writing Sample 2: Give me a short character background - hometown, dreams, family, etc. This should be a taste of who the character is - leave me wanting to know more! But keep it short, more than 5-6 sentences is probably too long.
"Well, you ask why am I here, why does a scion of a noble house get it´s clothes muddy, and sits here at this log, with little food and even less mead, why do I call me Stagson and not Lebeda?
First of all, I am bastard, yes a bastard! I do not even know who my father was, no one would tell me, and my mother was sent to spend her days in a monastery far away, to pay for this crime. Oh yes, I was tutored at the , by some of the best, but love is not a feeling I experienced as a child. Comradry yes, respect, yes, but the simple love of a mother... no not for Titian. But I can´t complain, I always had enough food and drink, so my life was better than some. But it also made me wonder what is my place in this world. And this quest, well it gives me the only chance to prove I am more than the Bastard! And that is all what I will say about that tonight!"

Interesting concept! I've got an old Kingmaker character (who's never actually played ;_;) that I could easily remake to suit this.

Question: I've always wanted to play an Aldori Dueling Sword wielding Kensai, but the recent erratta about Slashing Grace being incompatible with Spell-Combat has made that a much worse build than when I first thought of it. What are your thoughts on that erratta?

You could dip a level in swashbuckler.

Level 1: Swashbuckler
* Swashbuckler Feat: Weapon Finesse
* Human Bonus Feat: Weapon Focus
* Lvl 1 Feat: Slashing Grace

This gives dex to hit and damage at level 1, as well as some swordplay panache.

Level 2+ Kensai Magus

If you take a Rapier you could also just go Inspired Blade with Fencing Grace. Combine with Bladebound Kensai Magus. Wait until Level 3 and use Spell Strike (your off hand won't be occupied). Profit.

Alternatively, if the GM allows Path of War, just take Deadly Agility.

Would we have some knowledge of the elder mythos like stuff that is happening?
Can we use the bargaining, Investment, And/or Combat tacticsRules?

My question about the combat was if you would be using maps or theater of the mind. Sorry about the odd phrasings.

I am torn on my options. I have yet to get to play a druid, the summoner I only got to play for a very short time since the game fizzled out quickly, and the cavalier because that is a beautiful class and I could have a pony.

SoP...now I don't know what to play.

Level 2+ Kensai Magus

I appreciate the suggestion, but the issue isn't getting Slashing Grace, it's instead being able to use it to its full potential with a Kensai. In my opinion the Kensai's lack of armor proficiency makes it enough of a Glass Cannon (especially in a suprise round or when Flat-Footed), and doesn't need further nerfing past that. If you take away Dex to Damage during Spell Combat, it turns the Archetype into more of a Glass Water-Pistol.

The Feat Economy is actually better for an ADS Kensai, as you have to take an exotic weapon proficiency for ADS unless you're playing a race with the "Swordtrained" Racial Trait:
*Kensai Archetype: Martial or Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Light or One-Handed Slashing Weapon), Weapon Focus (Light or One-Handed Slashing Weapon)
*Granted by this specific Campaign's Rules: Weapon Finesse
*Human Bonus Feat: Slashing Grace
*Lvl 1 Feat: Completely open! Personally I'd go with Arcane Strike.

Dodekatheon wrote:

I did not know about Deadly Agility! Thank you!

I have often wanted to do something like this with Kingmaker but I don't know a lot about the Elder Mythos stuff beyond what I have seen in the bestiaries. I have been meaning to track down some HP Lovecraft books but I never deem to get the chance.

So I really like the idea of this game.

I have a character concept partially done. He is a Samsaran Magus, named Szemyan.

The basic idea is that Samsarans are created by reincarnating spirits, Szemyan was born to human parents and was reincarnated from the spirit of a swordlord in the past who was shamed or defeated or murdered by... someone.

And this spirit wants revenge. Szemyan knows he has some kind of "quest" he has to fulfill but he really doesn't know what the quest is, since even Samsarans don't really remember their past lives in more than fragments. It may be that this "revenge" manifests in something directed at a major villain who happens be the reincarnation of his ancient enemy. Szemyan doesn't know, but it shouldn't be resolved until late in the adventure.

A big connection to the past life will be in the form of the sword that he uses, which will be a black blade. The reincarnated ancestor spirit controls the sword more directly, and the sword serves to "guide" Szemyan in the quest for revenge. In a way, Szemyan's mind is incomplete without the sword. Though a Bladebound Magus doesn't get his black blade abilities until third level, there's no reason he can't just start with the sword, which doesn't "awaken" until then.

Because Szemyan is sort of "possessed" by this ancestor his sanity will be a little shaky. He would a little muddled and confused at times and a bit dreamy. I think that works well with the setting concept. Szemyan will be rather gloomy and spooky.

How does this sound so far?

While we are at it, here is a mechanical question:

The main concept is for Szemyan to use an Aldori Dueling Sword. But since a Magus doesn't have +1 BAB until second level, he can't take the EWP: Aldori Dueling Sword Feat until third level, and then slashing grace at 5th.

Any chance of houseruling that to allow the feat? Or houseruling the magus proficiencies to get rid of some stuff in order to treat the Aldori sword as a martial weapon?

Tieffling, Aasimaar.
Are you using aging penaltys?
Are you using the old or new outsider race aging? (Are they long-Lived or human aging)

Would you be adverse to considering the Avowed? specifically, I'd like to put forth an unwilling cultist, his mind touched by that of a Great Old One during an unfortunate cult-related kidnapping. Now, he's on a mission to reclaim his sanity, and to him, his humanity, but who knows? The path to salvation is fraught with evils, and he may not end up quite able to handle the burden. On the other hand... He may just end up enjoying what he's become.

Edit: If allowed, I'd also like to use the feats Heart of Magic and Body of the Ancients from Avowed 2,representing the inhuman fortitude granted him by his unwilling pact.

Dot. Some form of vigilante , probably a teisatsu or a serial killer

Alright, I'm going to be making a cleric of Winlas, and will probably take the eclisithurge archetype, although I'm still on the fence about that.

However, I do have a small request for the DM. For some reason, Winlas, the god of religious cerimonies and ritual, does not have access to the magic domain or rites subdomain. Would you mind if I used those for my character?

Would you mind if I refluffed one of the campaign traits?

Also, what are your thoughts on pre game crafting?

Michael7123 wrote:

Ditto

If you allow the avowed I'll probably play one

Dotting, looks quite interesting

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'd like to make a chsrecter, but...

How important is the "who would play the movie version of your chareter?" Question?

I know nothing about Actors, because I rarely watch tv.

Here's a WIP but mostly complete character sheet for Quinius Liocarcinus, cleric of Winlas. I'll be going for a very support heavy build, starting with default cleric, and then probably going into something with spheres of power. I also might delve into alchemist to help make other magical goodies for the party, but that will depend on party composition.

He's definitely not going to be the one slaying foe after foe in fights. He will, however, hopefully make it easier for the rest of the party to do so.

I'll have more up later, including fulfilling all the submission requirements.

Dotting because very strongly interested.

If you'd allow it, I'd very much like to bring in an Orc Bloodrager with the intent of going into Hell Knight eventually. Sort of the heavy handed tanky law enforcer of our future kingdom.

TheOddGoblin wrote:

As an FYI, there actually is a Hellknight order with some presence in the Riverlands- the order of the Pike (one of the more minor orders) has a fortress town in that region, so that could be something to work with if you're interested.

Order of the Pike actually would be perfect. Professional monster hunter type of character turned law enforcer.

So, I'm here to sell a Lawful Evil character.

The character in question is a former recruit for the Gray Gardeners of Galt, who had a falling out with his fellows when he realized that they had little concern for the actual guilt or innocence of those they executed. He left the organization, but discovered later on that they were trying to hunt him down in order to keep their secret (the fact that they're worshipers of Norgorber) from being revealed. While he did lay low in Brevoy for a while, he believed the relative lawlessness of the Stolen Lands would both be a good place to hide and that he might be able to make his mark upon it.

The character is inclined to work with the party for several reasons:

  • He needs allies. With the Gray Gardeners potentially still hunting for him, having loyal companions is about the best defense he can realistically hope for. He figures an adventuring party will work nicely for that.

  • He's not psychotic. He's a follower of the Reaper of Reputations, not Father Skinsaw. So, while he certainly would engage in some clandestine activity once the party has built a kingdom (he'd be very fitting for the Spymaster, for once) it would be to strengthen the party's power control over their lands and not to undermine them.

  • He's a team player. While his methods differ, his goals are essentially that of the party in purging the Stolen Land and establishing a settlement there. He sees no reason to betray them because they help each other; they provide a front to keep his cover which protects him from the Gray Gardeners, while he allows them to keep his hands clean by being willing to take care of problems that might make more good-aligned party members think twice. Obviously, this will require some OOC discussion to make sure he doesn't cross any lines, but I'm up for that.

He'll be a Sanctified Slayer inquisitor going into the Gray Gardener PrC. Let me know if that works for you, otherwise I'll come up with something else. I can answer any questions you have about the idea too, if you want.

  • I am very interested in this! I have wanted play Kingmaker for a while and I am very interested in the Dark Tapestry/Elder Mythos.

I have a character idea in my head that I think would be fun to play, but I am between two different character builds for this character. I was wondering if I could submit two different (but similar haha) character builds and have you choose which one you think would work better with the party/campaign? Thanks!
