Edric walks a circuit around the statue - staying about thirty feet away, hopefully if there is anyone/thing lurking then he will take the brunt of a charge - not the more vulnerable members of the group.

"Belay that! Hold up!"
Vosil has spotted something odd. "I don't know whether this is a mere curiosity, or something rather more sinister, but there's no animal life near the statue, not within a hundred feet. Master Naralesh, can you detect any magic at work? Edric, Magna - anything more sinister?"
Magnitofera Skeller |
"Is not evil, but it strikes me as odd to see a statue of the god of nature that animals avoid."
She keeps looking around, alert at any threats.
Edric 'Godly' |
"Some sort of sanctuary effect? He is the god of hunting so perhaps it was a resting point for hunters where animals wold not prey on them?" Edric theorises.
He walks up to the statue and begins ripping out the shrubbery, attempting to clear the base and have a better look at the statue as a whole.
Talia Khavortorov |
Moving closer to the statue, Talia rewinds her whip. If they were to be attacked, it would have happened by now.
Frowning, she circles the statue, casting a quick cantrip to aid her. light.

Unlike Talia, Naralesh maintains a firm grip on his weapon. "The statue certainly bears an enchantment of some kind. If Magna cannot sense any evil, I doubt it is a restless spirit or otherwise haunted. I will see if I can discern anything about the magic it possesses." He concentrates for the full duration of his detect magic cantrip, trying to understand whatever he can learn about the magic on the statue.
After 3 rounds, I should be able to discern the school of magic, at least.
Dregan Hirscherz |
Sorry it took me a while to catchup on the posts, things are rather hectic.
Dregan seems glum about Gavriil's departure and remains quiet during the meeting of their new friends. When Vosil looks over Dregan made it is clear that it has been made by someone without formal training, everything is scaled by half day rides rather than real distance and as a result the forest is drawn much larger than you suspect it really is. On the way back into the wilderness he rides out in front of the main party leading them by anywhere between 20 and 100 yards depending on visibility.
On approaching the the statue of the Erastil he smiles at the caution of his companions "There is little fear 'ere. Old Deadeye 'as many shrines. It is a safe place fer those ov faif t' camp." turning the statue he hold up his holy symbol and says a prayer [b}"Migh'y elder farfer, we tnk yew fer tis land an' fawerst. We tank yew fer ta great boar Taskgutter what yew made fer us t' 'unt. We 'umbly ask what we might spend dis night wiv yew lookin' over us, guardin' us while sleep ta sleep ov children."[/b] With that Dregan very matter of factly starts unpacking gear for the night's rest.

As Dregan completes his prayer, a strong wind begins blowing the tops of the trees around the statue. Just around the statue, as the rest of the forest is strangely still. From your quivers, your scabbards, and the edges of your weapons, a strange green glow emanates. It grows to a bright emerald hue, then fades.
All of your edged and piercing weapons are under the effect of a Keen Edge (CL 20) spell for the next 7 days.
You spend the night comfortably, and in peace.
Magnitofera Skeller |
South towards the Stag Lord fort, if you ask Magna. :D
Magna bows her head after receiving Erastil's blessing.
"Surely this is a sacred place of Erastil. We will need to make sure it is properly restored, and his church brought back to tend it."
She gets near Dregan and puts her hand in his shoulder (hardly, as she is much shorter, while smiling and looking him in the eye.
"Nice prayer. It was nice to see you make it."
Talia Khavortorov |
Think the plan was b4 and then south to b5 and moving back across towards E5.
Naralesh |
Naralesh's continued detect magic spell registers dozens of new auras as Dregan completes his spell. In surprise, he draws his sword, concentrating on the magic imbued in the blade. He is quiet for several seconds. "It seems Old Deadeye approves of our work and your piety, Dregan. We've been given a great blessing." He sheathes his sword before preparing for camp.
Vosil Comarenza |
Yup, keep exploring...
OK, I'm DEFINITELY going to have to rethink the whole 'deities have better things to do than listen to us' thing.
Aloud, Vosil says only "A good prayer, Dregan. Straight and from the heart. And what a reward! One might almost suppose our endeavours have a prospect of success."
Whistling, more cheerful than he's felt in days, if not weeks, Vosil helps set up camp.
Edric 'Godly' |
As Talia said, onto b4, b5 and the whole 5 row until we hit previously covered territory.
Edric looks with renewed appreciation at Dregan. "It is to all our benefits to have a follower of Old Deadeye with us. Thank you Dregan."
The next days see Edric keeping a sharp eye on the surroundings. "Every mile south brings us closer to this bandit, and I fear there may be trouble in the woods. Keep a sharp look out."

Talia hums a musical bit - The Eyes of Brevoy, for anyone wondering - as they ride along. Things were going swimmingly. Edric is less concerned by the rain than by the fact the storm clouds make it difficult to see any stars in the evening. He continues his devotions none-the-less. He accepts Narelesh's offer of magical warming gratefully.

Dangnabbit, Talia... you had to mention the weather! ;)
Vosil has even dispensed with his hat. Yes, the rain is that bad. He has his cloak pulled up and is doing his best to loftily ignore the weather. Failing miserably, he is reduced to quoting Guillaume of Galt to keep his spirits up; and when you're quoting Guillaume of Galt to stay cheerful, the mood is dark indeed.
"When that I was and a little tiny boy,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
A foolish thing was but a toy,
For the rain it raineth every day.
But when I came to man’s estate,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
'Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate,

NNNOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.....
"We've almost been swimming a few times at least," Talia says, huddled in her saddle, cloak pulled tightly around her body. Even Vosil's poetry can barely bring the woman out of her mood, though any other time and she'd likely appreciate it more.
"A Galtan? A Galtan? Guillaume was talented, I'll give him that, but Galt ruined him just like it ruins everything else. That land offers nothing but chaos and misery. And don't give me any of that 'turbulence breeds good art' claptrap. Folks like Guillaume were famous for spouting off crap like that. I'll bet all the silver in the Stolen Lands that he'd rather have his head..."
Riding along a moment more in silence, a thought occurs to Talia, one she can't help but smile about. "Besides, here's one a Brevic noble wrote:"
"Rain, rain, go away,
Or I'll stab you in the godsdamned face, Gozreh."
...
"Heh."

a5 The storms rage on through the night. The wind tears at the tops of the trees, their wild thrashing punctuated by flashes of lightning. At one point late in the night, an electrical storm of epic proportions crosses overhead. A hundred strikes in a matter of seconds, silver bolts branching and re-branching so fast, the night sky never goes dark.
The day breaks wet and windy, as the storms continue. The going is rough, as every task is made more difficult by the wind and rain. Late morning, you come upon a strange sight: a clearing the forest, whose soggy ground is an insect-infested, stagnant, swamp-like pond. No sounds from birds can be heard here, and you can just make out a shape lying on the edge of the pond in the rain.

Vosil looks lofty "I wouldn't dream of saying something so trite - and so manifestly untrue: after all, if turbulence bred good art then Brevoy would be a cultural pearl, instead of a laughable fiction in the backwaters of beyond..."

"It is a monstrous act to slay a unicorn." Vosil's speech comes out in a silent hiss, all other things forgotten.
In common with many who live - or have lived - by skirting the edges of what is legal and/or moral, Vosil has a great sense of what is and is not beyond the pale - and this, this, is beyond vile.
He looks around at his companions. "Whatever did this, it is a threat to us as well. Dregan, can you see any tracks of what might have done this?"
Talia Khavortorov |
Talia hangs back, not having much to offer her companions about this turn of events. There was nothing to hit, the unicorn being dead, and nothing to talk to, the unicorn being dead. She knew next to nothing about unicorns, let alone the strange deaths of them, from missing horns to the lack of rot. The best she had to offer was -
"Magic? Magic. If there's no rot, this is no normal death. It wasn't killed by a bandit or a boar. And it could have been killed a long time ago. With no rot, there's no way to tell. At least as far as I can tell."
Edric 'Godly' |
"The lack of decomposition is very strange. As you say Talia, there must be some sort of magic involved - otherwise I would expect the body to have been eaten away at a long time ago."
Edric seems rather upset at the fact that someone has killed a unicorn, he doesn't say why but he is obviously more upset by this than anything you have seen previously.
