I was planning on being on the walls, sniping and ready to jump down if needed, but looks like the convenient wall positions are taken.
I could be on one of the other buildings, perhaps at M18.
I've lost track. Who's closing the gates?
Phiona & Domitian are on the walls.
Egan and Alagor are in the shed.
It looks like Andrej was going to do one side, which leaves the other for me. I guess I'm not on the roof after all. Nor getting a surprise round attack. :(
The gates open in, so I'll just be hiding behind the southern gate until they're in. Andrej can have the northern half.
If he's willing to risk it, it would look more normal to have Oleg waiting to greet them.
What do we do if they don't all come in? Try to close the gates anyway and split them up or leave them open so we can get at all of them?
Egan 'Little Fire' Thermogauge |
Egan will survey the area from the walls, noting areas of likely cover out side the fort and the likely avenues of approach.
For the ambush he plays to be in the shed with Alagor.
DM_Ego |
I can put you in L20 Domi but you will be in basic line of sight from the floor to anyone who walks through the gate, since the only way to get cover for a stealth check would be laying prone it defeats the objective of standing in that square if your first action has to be stand up.
I positioned Phi a little back for that reason as well, if your worried about line of sight its worth noting that the walls of the post are taller than the single story buildings inside it. The only places you cannot really see are the squares which are right next to the guest house wall.
DM_Ego |
Since your surprising the unsuspecting bandits no one needs to make a stealth check, as long as you are out of line of sight you will be able to spring the ambush on them.
Just need Andrej's initative and I'll post a surprise round combat map when i get home tonight or tomorrow, its gaming night again tonight so i might not quite have enough time to knock the map together.
DM_Ego |
Sorry for the delay guys, i got in from gaming a lot later than i thought i would. Bloody crocosquig nearly took my leg off!
I'll get the map made tomorrow when i get home from work, so a quiet day tomorrow. Once again sorry for the delay but we'll be able to crack on once this bit of map making is done.
DM_Ego |
It means you can shut the gate by just taking a diagonal 5 foot step rather than using a move action. So if for exaple you wanted to shut the gate and attack you can, but i think Alagor is hoping for a peaceful intimidate check result.
If you want to bar the gate rather than just close it that would take a standard action.
Sergei Malov |
I still have no idea what we'll do with surrendered bandits.
Shall we escort them back to Brevoy?
Make them promise to be good and let them go?
Hang them anyway?
They may want to know terms.
But it's the plan and I'll run with it.
Horrible waste of a good ambush, from Sergei's point of view.
Domitian |
Agreed. U hang bandits killers and thieves. Why not set a precedence from the start. No quarter from me. Sorry. Captured alive for questioning and executed by a proper hanging.
Sergei Malov |
So are we changing the plan now? Cause I'll want to change my action.
Or are offering them surrender and then killing them? Even I'm not happy with that. Word gets around and then people stop surrendering to you.
Phiona |
I would just suggest killing them during battle. For some reason I felt no remorse killing something during battle. However if they surrender and then you kill them, at least my character doing think it's right unless someone could justified this action.
E.g. If the person raped 10 women, 2 children and 1 man then killed them and ate their body or display them in public. If he surrender great, but after that I would kill him due to my duty.
However if that person didn't do much wrong except for being a bandit, and just following the order of the leader or he/she'll probably get killed. Then I would allow him/her to start a new life, provided he/she won't do bad things again. (at least not intentionally)
Egan 'Little Fire' Thermogauge |
What if they had killed our guide's husband and son? Oh wait, they did. (I realize that we do not know that 'these' bandits did that, but we do know that some bandits did that.)
Egan would happily turn then over to any local authority. But if there is no local authority he is ready to assume that roll and begin to tame this wild land. IF they give up we can listen to their stories. But we know these men have threatened to take and we can only assume rape our current host on more than one occasion.
This is Kingmaker. Some day we will be kings. The time to assume high justice is now. :)
DM_Ego |
Just to give you an idea about the people who live in this area and whom you may one day rule. They have some different views to Brevoy and their own set of "laws" called the Six River Freedoms.
1. Say what you will, I live free
2. Oathbreakers die
3. Walk any road, float any river
4. Courts are for kings
5. Slavery is an abomination
6. You have what you hold
While i expect you to want to change some of these when your in charge and that your charter from Brevoy says "...sword or rope..." i would recommend adopting some of your follower to be's laws. The last one in particular means that while stealing and theft such as burglary is punishable under common law banditry is looked upon as a less serious crime, "5he difference is in allowing the victim the ability to resist, the opportunity to face his or her robber, and to plan for repossetion if so desired" - Guide to the River Kingdoms.
Also as Sergei mentioned if you kill everyone who surrenders to you everyone will soon start fighting to the death as your reputation spreads. Making an example of the ringleaders would be a LN response and killing them all would be more of a LE response in my book, i wouldn't enforce a change of alignment but i'm sure over time people would start having different reactions to the "tyrants" who are "taking over the river kingdoms by force" and "need to be dealt with". All the way through Kingmaker your public relations can be quite important, its worth thinking about and discussing how you want to be percieved.
Alagor Faelan |
I am really glad you liked my "dramatic entrance" post girls and boys, thank you for that.
@GM - I believe you have handled that quite well. Honestly, I did not expect much more than that, plus we do need some kind of an example, so please, pretty please people, leave at least one of them alive ;-)
Alagor Faelan |
When my turn comes up Dom checks to make sure their are no more bandits outside the wall, then gestures at who he believes to be the leader of the group, cursing him with misfortune. Save vs my Misfortune Hex is 10+ 1/2 my lvl (0)+ Int mod (+3). A total of 13 for the Will Save DC.
Dom - should not 1/2 your lvl. still be rounded down to a minimum of 1, and not 0, thus bringing your total DC to 14?
@Egan - no problem with that at all, I plan to personally "take care" of the leader
Domitian |
Will do thanks. Now I want you all to remember. I will totally point at you all menacingly if I'm threatened! Apparently that's all I can muster in an ambush.
Andrej 'Catfoot' |

Hah!
Sergei Malov |
I'd assumed that we wouldn't get a response to the surrender offer until their action and thus I wouldn't be attacking while they were still flat-footed. Since that's not the case, can I retcon my action to have my bow out instead of the rapier?
DM_Ego |
Hmm, on one hand i kind of want to follow the yes rule but i also think i should enforce desicions without allowing retcons. Do you not have a dagger you can throw to make a ranged attack? If not i will let you retcon, but i'm not going to be allowing any more after the first fight unless someone posts a totally invalid action.
I don't want to be a dick of a dm but i'd also like to keep the action swapping to a minimum.
Sergei Malov |
As I said, I wouldn't have asked if I didn't have a completely wrong out of game understanding of how it would go down. I assumed they wouldn't be able to respond until they had an action, at which point we'd be right into hand to hand.
If I'd realized how you were going to run it I would have had the bow out, delayed, and fired in both rounds.
But, yeah, I guess I can throw a dagger.
Switch hands as free action. Draw as move. Throw as attack. Switch hands back as free.
Alagor Faelan |
@Egan - yep, I forgot your +1 BAB from Bless, will sure include it in the next rounds :-)
Very, very "hot rolls" for their will saves, will make the fight more interesting (not to say challenging) definitely.
Andrej 'Catfoot' |
If this is round 1 after the surprise round... I am using the full action needed to bar the gates... if the gates are already barred or its round 2 after the surprise? Attack...
Where is the map link with the bandits on it?
DM_Ego |
Your currently in the first round after the surprise round, you barred the gates already in the surprise round with your standard action so you can take a full round of actions this round. The map is a few posts back on page 4 of the discussion thread, i'm going to repost another one after this round of combat.
DM_Ego |
What spell are you casting Domi, and whats the DC?
If everyone could i'd rather people put a grid coordinate for their movement so i don't have to guess where you want to be on the map. Two fighters moving up to attack and Phiona moving for los is pretty easy to sort out without coordinates but one day someone will end up in a dragons charge and not be happy about where they were stood.
Domitian |
I had no access to the map. On the move a lot. I didn't want to slow everything down. Sleep, DC 14. Need some luck for this. I have no idea where anyone is because there are people down and unconscious. With no new map I can only guess who is up but it looks like P17 is where I want it.
DM_Ego |
I can target your spell for you Domi, this not a problem, the only bandit who is down is the one Alagor mauled, the rest are up so you can hit 2 bandits and the bandit leader like Phiona did with your sleep.
I doubt their luck will hold up everyone has to fail a save eventually.
I'll repost a map once i get in, i finish work in about an hour so it won't be long.
Andrej 'Catfoot' |
Bandit N15 moves and wakes up bandit at O18
Bandit O18 wakes up, grabs his sword and stands up
Bandit Q18 remains asleep
Sounds great... may either set up a flank or coup de grace.
