Sorry, re-read the last post and had misunderstood it. I'll hold my action for any that don't surrender, but will otherwise not cast it.

Crypt Exploration | Roles

Looks like most of the action is dependent on Raven's actions, with the rest of the party trying to bring the fight to a conclusion without killing anyone else if the remaining mercenaries surrender. Is that the gist of things?

I think so. Let's see how bloodthirsty Raven is feeling. :/

Raven growls, her eyes still alight with rage. "He deserves to die! He betrayed the creed! He's a coward! He didn't even have to courage to face me in a straight fight!"

Slowly, however, the wrath fades from her face, and she slumps. "But... but it isn't about what they deserve, is it?"

Raven looks at everyone's face, their concern for her, her form and terrible anger reflected in their eyes. They're heroes. Every last one of them. Even Vorsirion, despite whatever's trying to control him. Perhaps even more, because of that skull and blade. And what am I? I'm a mercenary. A cold-blooded killer. I killed four men in cold blood. I used a man's head to intimidate his group into surrendering. I threatened to kill every last one of them if they toed the line.

She lowers Harbinger, then with sudden violence, tears off her Flame's Fury tabard. "Let him go, Elvara."

She sheathes her massive blade. "Ilago. Just... just go. And tell them that I won't be coming back."

Yaay, character development!

Yay! Nice post, btw.

Vorsirion struggles against the rage and hatred in his mind...the desire to wipe out all of the enemies...drink their blood...raise them to serve as mindless minions...

If she will not, do it yourself!

No...no...

Finally the occultist drops to his knees, exhausted.

"Let them go," he whispers.

Nicely done. I appreciate the character development!

By mutual consent the battle fades away almost immediately, even the injured half-orc lowers his weapon and grimly collects his companion's body wile the two mercenaries that refused to fight aid the other out of the hole. Once released Ilago glares daggers at Raven, but holds his weapons tightly, sensing that the fight was decisively over. Moving a safe distance away, he calls out, "You may have won here, you may have beaten the entire Greenbelt! But you've made powerful enemies! Drown in Dust, you Bi--!" before the half-orc cuts him off by slugging Ilago in the back of the head. Discretion being the better part of parting one-liners, the mercenary leader then quickly departs with his injured group in the direction of the Restov road, away from Oleg's trading post.

In the stillness after their departure, commingling red stains on the ground are the only remnants of two lives destroyed: the remains of the mercenary slain and Raven's tabard.

Sorry for the slow reply. Since Raven was so slow replying, I didn't hurry to do so myself. Then when I finally found time Wolfspirit had already ended the encouter... I would at least have liked to know who initiated the contract before releasing/letting them go. This left me unsure how to reply until I got too busy and didn't have time to ponder it...

After the mercenaries have left Elvara turns her attention to Raven. "Of course we would have your back in this Raven. We only got each other in this and we need to be able to rely on each other."

"Killing this man was still unecesarry. We want to be better than the bandits we fight against. Not stoop to their level. It's good that you managed to restrain yourself from killing more of them and it'll be even better if you can refrain from unecesarry killing in the future. Do you think that would be possible?"

"Smexy suffered injuries Alamina, she could use some healing."

Alamina channels to heal 2d6 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4 HP to all allies.

Sensing Smexy may be a bit more battered than that, she casts CLW for 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 additional HP.

"I think that should do it. Anyone else? I have plenty of magic to heal, so don't be shy!" Alamina happily heals anyone who need it, humming ans smiling as she does so.

"The sooner we get back to Oleg’s, the better. I could use a nice hot bath, and some of Svetlana's dumplings."

Crypt Exploration | Roles

Although there is some trepidation towards the identity of your mysterious enemy, the party finishes the final leg of the journey back to Oleg's Trading post. Although the remaining day back goes without much excitment, your arrival more than makes up with it. From even a mile away significant changes to the humble trading post are notable and the population that inhabits it has swelled past the Trading Post walls. There are pickets of horses, carts, tents, and more curiously, evidence of building materials set aside and carefully stacked. All told, there are as many as 50 people visible at your approach and murmurs and cheers break out at your arrival. Several of the guards salute you, including Kesten Garress.

Coming forward out of the newly repaired gate, Oleg looks around with a strange mixture of annoyance and amazement at the crowd that has invaded his simple homestead, before his face splits with a wide grin at you all. "Well, so it appears that you've managed to survive, now haven't you?" He gestures to a massive cauldron that could feed a small army, then to the simple table that nearly a month ago you first had a meal with him. "Stew is ready, come get it while it's hot!" Then, without a trace of irony, he adds and says, "Svetlana will skewer me if supper gets cold, best to see to that."

After you’ve had a measured time to sit and eat (a firm glare from Oleg and a whispered word from Svetlana keep several eager people at bay) a wide range of individuals come to see you. There is an almost overwhelming flood of well-wishers and individuals eager to take your measure, new and old faces alike.

Kesten Garress inquires on the fate of the bandits and looks forward to bringing Falgrim Sneeg to justice. It seems that he and his band have struck an agreement with the Brevic contingent stationed at Fort Serenko to keep the road between Oleg’s Trading post and the Fort safer than they have been in over a decade.

Still others are incredibly curious about your future plans, several making offers for further ventures into the Greenbelt. The Brevic Commerce guild is thankful for your dealing with the kobolds and goblinoid influences in the region, hoping to re-secure trade with the riches available. Others are settlers that look to escape from Brevoy. Still others whisper of dangers to the south: sightings of trolls, fae, and other horrors.

As the crowd dies down, with a few making promises for more detailed business proposals later, Svetlana makes her way to the women of the party and whispers a conspiratorial ”After you left, one of the Kobolds delivered some Moon Radishes in exchange for some food. I... I think it’s working…” before Oleg returns with a massive bag of clinking coins and an unbroken, sealed envelope: the seal a simple red circle with an upturned hand. He simply shrugs as he hands them over to you. "These came a few days ago by a merchant. He was the one responsible for some of the building supplies he said was left for you, oddest thing."

Inside the envelope, you find two pieces of parchment.

The first is a letter that you immediately recognize the handwriting from:

My esteemed associates:

Once more you have succeeded far beyond my expectations and have been rewarded in commensurate fashion. A sum of coin has been made available, as well as provisions, goods, and materials that you will need in your next steps of in making yours these Stolen Lands. As you have shown uncommon good sense and initiative I will not dictate how you use these, though I may offer a suggestion or two from time to time. Besides, we wouldn’t want Pitax or Mivon to think that an agent of Brevoy was inching to close, would we?

May the gods smile upon you and shield you from the Dust.

The Solicitor

The second letter is much grander, with illuminated lettering and several seals and ribbon. The ink alone probably would have cost a months pay for you months ago.

Be it so known that the bearers of this charter, having delivered the northern reaches of the Greenbelt from the scourge of banditry, having provided detailed maps of the lay of the land, and having done no small amount of work in the exploration of said land and the culling of hostile monsters and indigenous hazards, are hereby granted the right to rule.

The nature and laws of rule are theirs to define, and the wellbeing of this new nation is theirs to protect. In accordance for providing a stable nation to the south of central Rostland, let there be a generous stipend of funds, support, and advice provided to this fledgling nation as a token of Restov and Brevoy’s goodwill, such that future relations between kingdoms might be mutually beneficial.

So witnessed under the watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and by the authority granted by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

Catching a glimpse at the seal, Oleg whistles. "Well, it appears there is more in store for you all here." Then thinking about it, he adds, "I'm going to need a bigger bunkhouse."

Female Half-Elf Slayer (Vanguard) 4 | Perception +10 | Initiative +3 | AC 18 | hp 14/39 | Fortitude +6 | Reflex +5 | Will +2 | Speed 20 feet | +1 Harbinger +9 (2d8+15/19-20) | +1 returning spear +10 (1d6+11)

Raven is rather curious as to the massive amount of people that are currently swarming the trading post, and keeps an inquisitive eye on them as she enters the fort.

At Oleg's greeting, Raven clasps the mans hand and shakes it vigorously, cracking a wide smile. "Heh. It was no small feat, Oleg. And I suppose I better get to the stew before Svetlana begins sharpening her stabbing utensils." Raven digs in heartily into the stew once seated, devouring disproportionate amounts of food, even for a woman her size. Once finished, she allows herself a moment of reprieve before cutting her way through the horde of well-wishers to her bunk, secreting herself away for a few minutes.

The Letter:

Mother,

I'm sorry I haven't been able to reach you before this point. I've been mapping out the Stolen Lands with a group of... friends, I guess. Yeah, they're friends. Funny to think they're the first ones I've ever really had, isn't it? I should probably tell you about them before you come one over to the trading post to meet them. More on why you need to get out of Restov later. For now, I want to tell you of the good times I've had out here.

Quint. Damn, where to start with Quint. Well, he's an amazing musician, first of all. No idea how he does it, but his voice has saved out asses more times than I can count. Maybe he can tutor Lilly? Quint's also kinda naive for the sort of work we do out here. He has a good heart, though, and I think he's what kept us together.

Elvara is another bag of tricks altogether. Another half-elf, and it's kinda nice to have her around. She's a good person, too. An excellent hand at magic, but not the blasty-apart kind. I thought that weird greasy trick she had was pretty useless, but when I saw it the first time, I quickly retracted that opinion. She has some kind of damage, but she hides it well. We all steer clear. Oh, and she has a giant snake. A talking giant snake. Yeah, freaked me out first time I saw her. Him? It? They, even? Whatever. Smexy's pretty cool, too, and one of the ones to fight alongside me on the front lines.

Ally, or Mina, or whatever. She's... She's... *there are multiple lines of violently scratched-out text. She's amazing, and too good for this world. Ally's the kind of person who can see the good in everybody. Sweet girl. She's patched up my wounds more times than I can count, so I can't complain about her, regardless of whether she was actually a horrible b~%+*! Heh. Anyways, you should meet her.

Vorsirion. That one's odd. He's as dark as the rest are light, and I'm in the middle. But it's a gentle kind of darkness. He has a kind soul. His magic, though... It scares me, sometimes. I think it scares him, too, and I personally think he's fighting a battle that none of us can see.

Between negotiating peace in a kobold tribe, forcibly rehabilitating the bandits in the area, and placating the undead of a vengeful ferryman, I've been rather busy. A woman named Kressle is headed your way, probably. She may already be there. She's a mean b@#!$, but she has it in her to become something better. Just make sure she doesn't make off with all of your gold in the middle of the night. How are those two kids I sent your way? The girl, sweet thing, gave me a doll when we left. I still keep it.

Now, onto business. Something shifty is going down is Restov. The guy who hired us has some enemies, and they somehow managed to convince the Flame's Fury it was a good idea to get rid of me. We managed to chase them off, but I've rid myself of them. You need to get to Oleg's Trading Post as soon as you possibly can. Bring Aodhan with you, too. Something tells me he's not safe. Don't bother trying to sell the inn, as soon as this reaches you, get down here. The man who brings this letter is trustworthy, follow him down here, he'll escort you. Tell Lilly her big sister sends her love.

Raven

After a few minutes, Raven emerges from her bunk, and she talks with one of the veterans within Kesten's group. With his blessing, Raven sends the man to deliver the letter to the Tipsy Kobold, as soon as he possibly can.

Raven gives a knowing smile to Svetlana as she approaches her and the other women of the party, then joins in the celebrations, throwing off the last remnants of the shadow that has haunted her for the past few weeks.

When the group receives the two letters, as Raven scans through them, her jaw slowly drops, before nearly hitting the table when the party is declared the rulers of the Stolen Lands. She reels for a moment, drains an entire mug of ale in the space of a minute

And because Varric said it best,

and says, unceremoniously, "Well, shit."

Vorsirion takes in all the hustle and bustle with a rare smile. It did seem that things were changing for the better here. He enjoys Svetlana's stew, and though he doesn't say much over dinner, he seems in good spirits.

At the conclusion of the meal, the elf remembers something that he has been hanging on to.

He looks at Svetlana and says "We encountered many enemies and ended up with some spoils," he says. "This one, I suspect, will mean something to you, and I am sure we would all want you to have it," he says. The elf draws the golden ring from his pocket and hands it to the woman.

At some point Quint makes sure to return Svetlana's ring in case it had been forgotten.

Quint takes a hearty helping of food and kicks his feet up to enjoy some, in his opinion, well-deserved rest.

After finishing his meal he circulates among the crowd, gladhanding and making spreading good will. Then he starts performing for the assemblage.

"Wow, it would seem word of our exploits has traveled far. This place is really something, now. It almost looks like a tradetown, just needs a bunch of caravans and some dancing!"

Taking up the music from Quint, Alamina begins a small impromptu dance around the entrance of Oleg’s, laughing and clapping happily.

Once settled back and with that burst of energy out of her system, she seeks out Svetlana to check on her.

"How are you doing, my dear? I heard the radishes came up here, and was hoping everything is working out in that regard." Giving Svetlana a big hug and lots of.smiles, she waits patiently to hear (hopefully) good news.

Once reunited with the team, most likely over stew and dumplings, "So...we're in charge for real now? Names on papers, lineages stored at the capital, all that kind of stuff? That's a bit...much to take in right away. Any of you have experience ruling a village, or town, or whatever?"

Elvara is surprised and amazed to see so many people gathered at Oleg's trading post. "Wow, look at all these people. Where did they all come from? This place used to be just Oleg and Svetlana scared of bandits. I guess word really got around about what's been happening in the region lately, eh?"

---

Elvara smiles to Svetlana when she mentiones the moonradishes. "That's great! I hope things continue to work out.. It's really great what you two got together. I wish I'll find something similar one day."

--

Elvara is further surprised by the contents of the letters. Rule? All we did was rid the land of bandits and a few other dangers. We would have needed to do that if we wanted to stay here regardless. Though it's nice that the land is safer now, as seen by all these people coming here.

The name at the end of the last letter gives her mixed feelings though. Her father's name reminds her of the uncomfortable circumstances of her youth and even more painfully, about the encounter with her brother that lead to her leaving.

She shakes the uncomfortable feeling as she speaks to the others. "This is pretty big indeed. I hadn't expected something like this. All we did was deal with the problems in front of us right? Is that really all it takes to get this kind of authority?"

"I guess there is worse ways to come to rule though. Grabbing power for it's own sake like the Stag Lord and leeching off those around you is much worse. I'm wondering if we are worthy of this..."

Her words hang in the air a bit before she continues. Suddenly her voice turns eager as she's trying to figure out how to best deal with the situation by talking about it. "But I think as long as we keep things this way and deal with problems as they come then we are. This written authority might give us more room to do so."

"As Raven said about the mercenaries we spared: It's not about what they or we deserve. It's about what we might do. It's about the future. Let's not waste that and make the best of the situation."

"As for experience ruling... Well, I learned a bit about courts and manners from my mom as well as how to talk to people, but not about managing or rule the land. We'll just have to learn as we go. Hopefully we can learn quickly by helping each other."

"Better us than someone like the Stag Lord." Or Alexander, or dad... Elvara nods.

"I think calling someone insane is a rather strong statement. We certainly don't understand his actions, but can we really judge if someone is crazy just from a few letters?"

She looks around the group as she tries to figure out what to say next. "He might have information that we don't posses. Maybe it makes more sense for him to work through proxies like us in order to lessen the risk of negative consequences to himself? We are the ones risking our lives out here, not him."

The earlier meeting with Svetlana and their talk about moonradishes as well as seeing the looks from Raven to Alamina makes Elvara think about her own desires. Even with my companions here, I'm kinda lonely. I certainly don't want anything like Alexander's paws on me again, but some closer human contact would also be nice.

She then looks over at Quint performing. He has such a nice voice, he's so good at entertaining people. And he's nice to everyone, so unlike Alexander and dad... "Hey Quint, why don't you tell us a lovestory? That would be nice to listen to."

The half-elf reddens slightly, realizing how it might sound. "In honor of Svetlana and Oleg and their recovered symbol of their bond, of course." She smiles and the blush disappears as she feels like she somehow saved herself from embarrassment.

When Svetlana's ring is returned

Svetlana, in the middle of clearing some dishes drops one of the wooden plates, uncharacteristically completely oblivious to the mess that is causes as she stares at the simple gold ring, taking it with trembling hands. "Where did you, how did you? We were sure this was lost for good." She starts crying tears of joy as she giddily replaces it on her finger, holding it tightly. "Oleg has never had much, but he's brought me a new life with this ring." She leaps over to kiss Vorsirion on the cheek, before hugging him tightly, then anyone in reach.

After several moments of celebration, she clasps her hands to her face, and notices that even the stoic Oleg has a tear trailing from his eyes. "Oh my, I must look a sight!" She giggles a bit even as her eyes are still a bit red from crying. "We can never repay you enough."

Oleg clears his throat, that is suddenly thick with emotion. "But we'll try. Mere gold isn't enough, but you will have that. It seems like you have other places to be, but you'll always be welcome to a bed and a home cooked meal here."

"I can't speak for my comrades, Oleg, but we do not need your gold. Your friendship and welcome to the land has been payment for me thus far, and I will gladly accept that currency going forward. I hope we can work together to improve and cultivate this land. It does seem to be our new job, after all." Alamina blushes and smiles at that last statement, seemingly embarrassed to be put in charge of something.

"So, team, what are our plans? Do we want to scout a place to set up a township? All these people will need a proper place to live, since they don't have wagons like proper nomads."

Raven first responds stiffly to Svetlana's hug, but then realizes what's happening and hugs her back.

Raven thinks for a moment, slumps her head, then smacks herself on the back of the head, gauntlet and all. She then shakes her head, decidedly reinvigorated. "Alright. I should be sober for the duration of this conversation, at least. Before we start making plans for towns, we need to make sure we aren't stepping on any toes, and maybe make a few allies in the process. We could probably send runners to both the Stonemaw and the Sootscale clans, as well as Akiros' group, letting them know of our new... positions, and asking them to convene here in ten days, so we can set up boundaries, trade agreements, and in general make sure we don't accidentally provoke a war. The best solution would be to integrate all three groups into a republic-style government, but I doubt that will happen. Securing a solid alliance with the Sootscales is a top priority-their silver could significantly boost our economy. Once we get an official coronation-" Raven pauses for a moment, looking suddenly stricken. "Shit. We have to decide who's going to be the ruler of... this, aren't we? Let's... let's thin about that later. Anyways, once we get that out of the way, we could send the more antsy folks who came here for work to that gold deposit we found, getting another boost to our economy. That should let us shore up our defenses in case any natives take offense, start creating jobs, and building loyalty with our citizens without worrying about an imminent economic crash all the time." Apparently, Raven's analytical, tactical mind could apply itself to more than the science of war.

"There we go! Fast thinking and sound planning, right off the bat. See, I knew we'd do well being in charge...not that I knew this was going to happen, but...you know what I mean." Alamina thinks about Raven's idea for a moment.

"What about the two kobold tribes working the mines separately from one another? Those guys really like digging and living underground, seems like a perfect fit to me. We don't have any dwarf friends here, do we?" Alamina looks around the crowd, scanning for beards and broad shoulders.

"As for the people, is there some way we can start constructing a place of worship? I know most don't follow the Dreamer's Path, but there must be some clergy among this group. A meeting hall where multiple faiths are encouraged, and peaceable folks can congregate to worship would be ideal, I think."

Quint bows to Elvara before recounting the beautiful yet tragic tale of Tristan of Issia and Isolde of Rostland.

Raven nods. "True, true. If we give the Stonemaws access to the gold mine, then they'll be secured as an ally. We can develop agreements with the kobold tribes. Maybe in exchange for being pat of this new... thing, not quite sure what to call it, having a seat on the council, and being granted full citizenship, we share the gross amount of gold and silver that the tribes produce."

Raven thinks about Alamina's suggestion. "Once we have established a foothold here and make sure immediate needs are taken care of-food, water, shelter, economy-setting up a multidemoninational church could potentially be to our great advantage, keeping the faithful happy without pissing a particular church off. Until we have sufficient resources and time to spare, however, it won't be practical. Most faiths can be worshiped in the home."

Reacting to Svetlana...

Vorsirion appears slightly embarrassed at the attention Svetlana showers on the group, and him in particular, but otherwise seems in surprisingly good spirits.

"I knew you had a connection to this ring...I could sense it when we found it," he says. "I can see things..."

Currently...

Vorsirion scratches his head as he listens to the others discuss the burgeoning settlement.

"I believe we will find kobolds and goblins to be erratic and dangerous allies in the long-term. Though I do think we might engage in trade and hopefully peaceful relations, I do not think they should have an equal seat at the table. If history is any guide, that is."

The elf turns to Oleg as he has another thought. "I am in need of some more expensive equipment. Are you aware of any merchants that might have access to that, or a wizard who might enchant a weapon?"

Still wondering about what kind of equipment we have access to purchase...

Ring scene
Elvara hugs Svetlana back warmly. "I'm so glad we found this for you. I'm so happy for you."

After Vorsirion's comment and the others are done reacting she turns to him. "You can see things related to items? That's so cool... And useful. Can you do it with other things to? I saw you pause for a moment with Raven's spear. Could you do that with the letters we just received? Or the note we found in the woods? It would be great to know more about them. Too bad we don't have any item from the mercenaries that could be used to trace back to who sent them."

----

Listening to Quint
Elvara gets a tear in her eye from the story and she listen with fascination. "That's so beautiful Quint. You do really have a great talent for this."

----

Elvara nods to the other's comments. "I think we do well to make the most out of those allies we can get. But at the same time we should be careful as Vorsirion says. I'm definitely for keeping a good relation with the Kobolds and Akiros, but maybe not have them take over the mine. Both those groups have somewhat spotty reputation."

She holds out her hands to those around them. "We do have all these people here, right? How about we get some of them to do the mining? I'm sure they are eager to prove themselves."

Suddenly her eyes brighten up and she smiles. "Oh yeah, we should totally talk to everyone here and figure out what they all are good at. Some might be good at hunting, farming or sewing clothes, while others might be more suitable for mining or as messengers. That'll even let us find out which ones are more religiously inclined."

She gets a serious expression as she delivers the bad news of her disagreement to Alamina. "Though I'm not sure constructing a place of worship should be our first order of business... Building stuff is expensive. If we prioritize getting the mine going it would be easier to afford other stuff and we'll need lumber or bricks to build as well. Of course everyone need to be fed too, so farming, fishing or hunting need to be done. And with so many people, hunting is not really reliable."

With a nod towards Raven she continues. "Either way, I think figuring out who is good at what is a good place to start. Why don't you get a few drinking buddies Raven? Some people lose up more when they drink. Though others might be more talkative after listening to a good story or watching some cool tricks. You think you could help loosen a few tongues, Quint?" This of course being followed by a gesture towards Quint.

"Of course I'll do my best myself. A lot of people are happy to talk about themselves regardless and a few kind words can go a long way for those who are more hesitant. Maybe you could inspire people with talk of your faith Alamina? Few people dislike Desna and some are more likely to open up to a cleric."

"Once we have a clearer pictures of our capabilities, we'll stand a much better chance to figure out the next steps. But it will be hard to ignore the gold."

"Vorsirion, since you seem to keen on it. Why don't you figure out who here have anything for sale or trade. We do have quite a bit gold to use, maybe we could acquire something useful if it's available. So far the magical items we've come across haven't really been a perfect match to our abilities. It would be nice if we could somehow customize things to fit our needs..."

"Oh yes, yes, that's a great idea Elvara. I will gladly hold a service to the Dreamer tonight, and any night others wish. We need not have a building or anything, it's even better out by the crossroads under the stars. I should have thought of that myself. And while I'm there, I can help anyone who got hurt during the day, too!"

Its hard to imagine, but Alamina's smile gets even wider as she thinks about sermonizing to the people about Desna.

"Oh! I forgot to mention it, but I think I can learn how to make magic things. Kind of like how wizards do their scrolls or wands, but with trinkets or clothing or the like. I don't really understand the whys and wherefores about just how to make it happen, but I think I'll be able to make really interesting things soon. I just have to get better at knowing the background stuff about the magic."

Raven gets up, rolling her neck. "Alright. I have enough in me to have another two hours of sobriety, but after that I won't make any sense. I'll see why the people came here, what they're looking for, their fears, their dreams, and who they fancy." Raven gives a wink towards Elvara-this is quite possibly the first joke Raven has made since she has known her-and trundles off to mingle.

Ok, in the interest of keeping things rolling while we transition, I'm going to run a couple of "intermission" encounters to bring in a few elements that you guys didn't hit in your Explorations. These can go as slow or fast as you'd like, but hopefully they'll add a bit of energy back to the game while we iron out getting Kingdom Building going.

After the sheer shock of your new Charter (and apparent new responsibilities) set in, it is almost brings some relief when more "familiar" needs of dealing with Greenbelt issues provide a much needed excuse from poring over provision requests and managing settlement concerns.

During a break from one of your planning sessions, Kesten Garess approaches the group with a crisp salute. "I hate to interrupt important matters... though honestly, it looks like you could use it. We have a bit of a situation with some of the foresters that are trying to catch game to the South to supplement our expansion efforts."

"It seems that foresters around here have always claimed that parts of the Narlmarches are haunted, but a few frontiersmen that have been bounding in that area haven't returned, and those that have swear by the gods that they've seen a ghost. We can get by provisioning further East, but that's going to slow us down a fair clip. Think you can investigate matters?"

He provides the approximate location on the map as to where the "haunting" supposedly is.

Raven gives a small chuckle, then nods, cupping her chin thoughtfully. "Hmmm... Although it may just be superstition at work, your men are not properly equipped to deal with a ghost or other like undead. By the time we did get oils and silver blades, or some other arcane nonsense, panic would already have spread, and the damage will be done." Raven gets up from the table and says, "We'll investigate this personally. Thank you for the notification, Kesten." She turns to face her companions, and says, "Did any of the foresters give a more detailed description than, 'BOO! A ghost popped out of the trees!' One of my companions more schooled in occult matters might be able to identify it."

Vorsirion listens to the report darkly and looks askance at Raven.

"You may treat this lightly for now," he says as he runs a hand through his auburn hair. "But there are things out there that chill me to the bone. The walking dead are bad enough, but when they can think and plot for centuries..." he trails off.

"We will investigate the matter," he says to Kesten.

Elvara offers her opinion in a serious tone. "I don't like the sound of this. The people who didn't return could be dead already. We are supposed to keep them safe, right?" She looks to the others for confirmation.

"We have to investigate and deal with it. We can't have people just disappearing in the woods. Even if it's some kind of trick, it's making people scared,"

"Do we really think there are ghosts in the woods? A few undead creatures, I can deal with, but a full on haunting may be beyond my abilities. Do we have any silver? If so, I can bless water and create some holy water vials to use against them at least."

Alamina looks a bit worried at the thought of an undead invasion or large scale haunting, grasping her butterfly pendant and biting her lip unconsciously.

"At the least, you all can put them down with physical might, while Quint and I support you with magic. Seemed to work before, at least."

When she does that... No. No, Raven. Now is serious time. Now is job time. Raven gives a nod to Alamina. "I don't have a lot of experience with the undead. I'm guessing not every one gives out a free magic weapon to whoever kills their murderer."

"To my knowledge, no, that was most unusual." Alamina shakes her head and smiles.

"That would make it a great deal more profitable, though. I think our magic weapons and magical powers should called the day, here. That is, unless the cause for the missing people is some massively powerful creature. We could be outmatched then."

"I don't know much about undead or ghosts either I'm afraid. Maybe you could tell us what you know while we travel there? That way we'll be better equipped to deal with them if we do face them." She looks from Alamina to Vosirion, the two of her companions who have so far claimed knowledge of the topic.

She looks back to Kesten, now her voice is filled with concern. "Who was it that disappeared? Could you tell us their their names and a bit about them? Are there any who have a more detailed description of what they encounter we would quite like to speak with them as Raven mentioned earlier." She nods towards the slayer.

Kesten shrugs. "It could be bandits making a racket, it could be ghosts, it could be haunts... I'm not sure. 'Superstitious' is probably the wrong word, but anyone that's lived in these forests long enough is probably jumpy enough to steer clear of a situation they don't understand."

He thinks. "At this point, it's near impossible to decide what is real and what is rumor, but I've heard several mention of strange noises, seeing something that isn't really there, and just a general feeling that something was wrong."

Will move forward tonight.

Crypt Exploration | Roles

After making some preparations and gathering your horses, you set off into the Greenbelt, entering the Narlmarches through the Thorn River Ford. How strange it is that only months ago you could set off into the wilderness without needing to inform *someone* that you were leaving. In your short travel, you can already see increased signs of human inhabitation in the previous trackless area.

You uneventfully pass by the Thorn River camp where you encountered Kressle and her men. The area has now has been staged by foresters to store some supplies and you can make a ready camp. One small benefit in the increased stability in the region, at least.

Finally, you approach the site where the strange activities were reported, not far from the Camp. While you don't initially find any sign of supernatural activity, on the south side of the Thorn River you discover a gruesome sight. You discover the remains of a man dressed in the leather and browns that is almost a uniform for woodmen in this area is, his legs crushed under several large logs that seem recently cut. It is hard to tell exactly how long he had been deceased as animals had started to get to him, though you do locate a well crafted (Masterwork) axe in a nearby cut stump. You also note a rope dangling from a tie-off in the tree above.

Survival DC 15:
It appears that the logs were part of a deadfall trap, which were sprung on him. Bizzarely, given the nature of the axe and cut trees, it seems likely that the slain man was the creator of the trap. You also don't detect any humanoid tracks beyond the man's in the area.

Perception DC 25:
The rope looks cut, by something incredibly sharp. However, there are no humanoid tracks in the area, other than the ones made by the man.
