Journeying to the Southwest, you continue to skirt the edges of the Narlmarches. The woods thin and thicken; there are occasional signs that a considerable time ago there was human civilization here, though only sporadic marks made by hunters remain now.

One such sign of local hunters takes the attention of the group, as you hear the frenzied whimpering of a wolf-sized beast.

Knowledge Nature DC 13:
The creature is a Thylacine, and it sounds wounded.

The creature yip-howls and paces out of sight in a treacherous looking pit that gapes open 10 feet wide. It seems to have been created and concealed by a humanoid, but approaching closer to investigate looks dangerous and a misstep could find you joining the trapped creature.

Audsley slides awkwardly off his horse and gets as close as he dares, face clearly registering distress over the sound of the animal's pain.

"What kind of barbarous person would put a generic pit trap like that out in the open without rhyme or reason? Poor doggie. Do you think we could help it?"

Audsley tries to edge closer, craning his neck to catch a glimpse of the creature.

Túrante manages to get near the edge and hunkers down to spread her weight and make it less likely that the ground will give way under her and send her sprawling like her fellows.

"It's a thylacine - um, sort of like a hyena? Never mind, it's probably angry and hungry! It's just an animal, if it attacks you, it should be no trouble to just stab it!" she shouts down into the hole.

"Hang on, who has a rope?"

Franka keeps off to the side while Janna and Emil work on the boar. "Too bad, really. I know there's magic that will keep a body fresh for days. I don't know the particulars, though..." She laughs at Audsley's suggestion for yet another name, this one even more pompous than the last one. "I think Adventurers in Gold will do fine. If anything, it'll keep everyone guessing what the 'gold' is about, since no of us wear any. In the end though, Janna is right: it's not about the name, but about the results. 'A rose by any other name', and all," she quotes.

--

"Oh, Audsley," Franks cries out as she slides off Heimdall. From her tone, she's said the same thing many times before, probably in exactly the same tone of voice. At Túrante's suggestion, she starts digging around in her backpack for rope. "Coming up," she says, hurried now. "Audsley," she says over her shoulder, trying to grab his attention while she's bringing out the rope, "see if you can distract it with some food if it looks angry and violent. It might be more afraid of you than the other way around. Isn't that what they usually say?"

She's already seen two people slide into the hole, and decides against joining them. Instead she tosses Túrante one end of the rope while looking for a sturdy tree to tie off the other end. "Can't you try to distract or calm that creature, Túrante?" Would be a sight to see, if she handles this one as well as she did the owlbear! She stands a short while off, studying how the remarkable elven princess will handle the situation.

(Sorry about that last bit. It seemed to be in-character, though. :)

"I'll try when the server stops going down," says the elf princess.

"But tie the end of that rope to a tree or something. If you try to pull them up from here, the edge of the pit will give way and we'll just wind up in the hole!"

Túrante lies down and makes a whining sound - not to try to talk to the thylacine, but just to get its attention. She lets her eyelids droop, and her ears follow suit. After a few moments she whines again and brings her arms up underneath her body, then rolls on to her side in a show of friendly non-competitiveness.

The emaciated creature shrugs off the worst effects of the magically procured Snowball; clearly its short fur is enough to keep it warm, though it does emit a yip-squeal.

It glances up at the top of the pit, small eyes brimming with fury, before the lure of potential food causes it to return its attention to Audsley. The marsupial attempts to savage the portly Alchemist with its needle-fanged jaw. However, in its fury, it only manages to snatch a mouthful of clothing, ripping parts of his shirt to shreds.

With more time to survey the area, there isn't much of notice in the pit beyond the obvious signs and smells of the thylacine's captivity for what must have been days. There is no sign of the hunter that would have left this trap, though it is close enough that it may have been done by a bandit.

With no better information as to who or what set the pit trap, the party continues their exploration southward, even deeper into the Narlmarches. Here the old growth forest continues to thicken, though breaks are occasionally visible giving a view of the Lake Tuskwater.

As you come close to completing your exploration of the area, near the banks of the Skunk water the hairs on the back of your necks stand up and Audsley, Emil, and Turante all have a momentary double-take: did that mass of vines and moss just *move*?

Before being able to even cry out an alarm, a great plant mass surges up from the ground, swinging a vine at Emil and catching him between two masses of tendrils and ripping at both arms...

Leaving behind the shared nightmare of the past night, you proceed without excitement to the Keep Ruins. It is clear that Akiros made the best of the short time that you've been away; the signs of your battle have been removed and some repairs have begun. The barricade is initially closed, though opened at the command of the ex-Paladin.

"Come in adventurers, come in!"

Of note at the keep, Dovan has slipped off in the night shortly after your departure. Akiros sent a few of the remaining men after him, but was unsuccessful in apprehending him. Auchs remains with the Keep, helping out with some of the heavy lifting in exchange for sweets.

Or was that more "Aether stuff"?" he asks as he begins caring for the horses, listening to Akiros' report distractedly, until he informs them of Dovan's departure. "That's a problem. Not a big one though, at least not right now. Should we take time to find him? I'm not against but I don't think we'll be successful." He pauses to finish what he was doing before continuing. "Actually, what now? Do we take the same approach back to the trading post but coming southward? Or do we follow a path we've already tread upon? Should we try and find those kobolds again? Looks like we made a good first impression, right Franka? Maybe we could help each other out. Word is Kobolds are expert trapsmiths. Maybe they could help us defend the keep. Hmm. Franka goes to stand next to Emil as they're tending to the horses, and puts a hand on his shoulder. "I don't think it was really dangerous, whatever you experienced. I didn't sense anything special in the Æther. Maybe just more fae, playing tricks on the mind. Illusions, you know...? I think we're safe from any of that, here in the keep. "Should we give it to Akiros here, or hold on to it for Jhod Kavken? I think the latter should have it. Wasn't he the one that came here following a vision of a temple with a bear?"

Agree with Janna on the path back toward the Outpost.

Túrante says, "Jhod said he is a priest. I'm inclined to see what happens when both of them meet. Perhaps the penitent priest can help the fallen follower."

"Well, the fae are starting to get a little frustrating then." he comments mirthlessly. "But I have high hopes that both the kobolds and the people here will see the benefits of exchanges with us. It's a step towards building strong communities for everyone involved."

"We did promise to Jhod that we'd get it. So he should have it."

Third that path back.

Audsley wanders around the keep beaming at everyone, though he does give the owlbear's enclosure wide berth. Returning to the group in time to hear the tail end of the conversation, he nods his agreement with Emil.

"Yes, I believe Jhod should have it, but we should insist that he swing by Owlbear Keep on his way to the shrine so as to meet Akiros. I'm sure he'd want to, regardless."

He gazes around the inner courtyard. "What would it take to fix this place up, I wonder? Really make it shine?"

Audsley gets several ideas for how to reinforce the keep, although he lacks the materials to do so. With his guidance, raw materials, and a dedicated workforce, the keep ruins could certainly be reclaimed.

Before you leave, Akiros leads you to the cellar with the strange green fungus. "This blasted goo doesn't seem to want to come off the walls; definitely not natural. I don't have the men to spare on it much, but I've used it as a bit of a punishment for the men. Auchs managed to clear off enough of the slough to make out a bit more after being scolded for breaking one of the men's arm. It's a bit unsettling, but I thought you might want to see it."

He reveals a piece of parchment with a single phrase written: Nobility is a bastards word. Then he looks to the party. "These markings must be centuries old, and I know the Stag Lord never uncovered them. How could someone possibly have known that would be the bastard's password?"

After you leave, and make your way North East
Bidding the Keep farewell, you return to your exploration. Immediately outside of the influence of the Keep is the confluence of the Thorn and Shrike rivers, before they empty into the Tuskwater. In several places the water is less than knee high and easily fordable.

"What part? The man's arm or... Oh. That is unsettling." comments Emil. "So, we have a wall that predicts the recent past? Unless there's more to that than just password foreshadowing. Franka? Audsley? Thoughts?"

Audsley taps his lips as he considers this information, expression growing grave.

"I am not, ah, familiar with the Aether, but it would seem, at least logic would suggest - insofar as logic can be applied to this situation - that our dearly departed Stag Lord was influenced by whatever Aetherial forces are at play here, and his decision to choose that password was pressed upon him by, ah, intelligences, possibly malevolent, if only because of the acts the Stag Lord went on to commit, and due to the fact that I am inclined not to trust anything that hides its veiled insults behind a veil of green fungus. Um."

Audsley purses his lips. "Um. If you know what I mean."

He glances around the dismal interior. "How can we go about uncovering the history of this fort? Who built it? What was their fate? Did the Aether play a role?"

Although Audsley spends considerable time examining the keep, he is unable to determine its age. His analysis isn't aided by the fact that that different parts of the building appear to be in different stages of repair.

As you continue on your trek North East, you see the blackened husk of a massive sycamore tree that looks like its been struck by lightning several times. As you approach, Turante finds several tracks that appear to have been made by Mites; at the base of the tree there is an opening that looks cramped, but large enough for the party to fit in if they desired.

You have time to cast any long duration buffs, or avoid it entirely if you wish.

"Looks like there's a hole in the ground here, under the tree. Maybe erosion? Perhaps expanded? Regardless, these little tracks look like mites - angry blue small faerie creatures. Vicious in large numbers. They probably live down in a hole under here because it's hard for bigger creatures to get to them," she says. "If these lands do become settled, they could wind up being a future problem for people. Mites are generally ill-tempered and have a tendency to raid homes at night and steal small quantities of food and sometimes other trinkets that attract their interest. They will only fight people when they have a large advantage in numbers, but they could be a threat to livestock or children."

Audsley gives the cramped hole under the tree the stink eye. "I for one am not in favor of wriggling underground and risking becoming stuck while faced by a furious horde of mites. If we wish to deal with them, how about smoking them out or the like?"

Male LG Human (Taldan) Cavalier (Order of the Flame) 4 | HP: 43/43| AC: 22 (11 Tch, 21 Fl) | CMB: +8 CMD: 19 | F: +6, R: +2, W: +3 | Init: +1 | Perc: +9, SM: +1 | Speed 20ft | Challenge 1/1 | Glorious Challenge Counter=0 | Active conditions: None

Emil purses his lips thoughtfully and replies: "I don't like small spaces either, but I think they'll be a problem in the future. And I don't think fey folk are the type to let themselves get smoked out." He shakes his head in disgust. "Going after children. Gods on high."

Franka is quite taken by the conundrum of the words uncovered at the Keep. She spends much of her time in the basement, staring at the words or dozing off and trying to make inspiration come. "Remarkable indeed. It could off course be coincidence, although I don't really believe in that. An other explanation could be - as Audsley stated so, err... eloquently - that the Stag Lord was subconsciously influenced by these words, or by the energies that lie behind them. That could have made him choose his password as he did. Finally, we shouldn't discount the possibility that this text is a true prophecy. They are supposed to be exceedingly rare, and rarely verifiable, but it could be so."

At Túrante's short lecture on the nature of Mites, Franka purses her lips. "I agree with Túrante, mostly. We know very little about these creatures, and how they live." More to herself, she continues "And it would be such a shame if we just 'dealt' with them without ever learning more." Addressing the others again, she voices her concerns. "Is it really right to deal with them, just going on what we know as 'common knowledge'? Couldn't that have been exaggerated by folklore, superstition or xenophobia? Smoking them out sounds rather drastic. I'm not looking forward to a romp down these tunnels either, Emil, but don't we owe it to at least see them for ourselves, try to talk with them?" In an effort to sway the others, she recalls an earlier encounter the group had in the Stolen Lands. "We did alright with the kobolds, didn't we? Even though some people would have attacked them on sight."

Looks for a thumbs up / thumbs down for going into the cavern under the sycamore. Oh, and in case the sheer size wasn't impressed upon, the sycamore could comfortably fit several humans within the trunk.

Audsley hems and haws. "I suppose we could take a peek inside? A sort of reconnaissance mission? Which of us is the most svelte? Just to see if the tunnels remain impassably narrow, or if by chance these mites are of a luxurious state of mind and have carved out broad hallways beneath the loam."
