Exploration Rules:
Brevan Charter for the Greenbelt wrote:
Be it so known that the bearer of this charter has been charged by the Swordlords of Restov, acting upon the greater good and authority vested within them by the office of the Regent of the Dragonscale Throne, has granted the right of exploration and travel within the wilderness region known as the Greenbelt. Exploration should be limited to an area no further than thirty-six miles east and west and sixty miles south of Oleg’s Trading Post. The carrier of this charter should also strive against banditry and other unlawful behavior to be encountered. The punishment for unrepentant banditry remains, as always, execution by sword or rope. So witnessed on this 24th day of Calistril, under watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and authority granted by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

The expanse of the Stolen Lands has not, in Brevoy’s recent memory, been accurately mapped, and part of the task set before the PCs is to rectify this gap. As they explore the region, they and their companions are expected to keep track of what they find in order to keep Brevoy informed of strong and weak points of defense and to determine possible sites for roads, towns, and other fortifications.

Each hex on the map of the Stolen Lands is 12 miles across (between opposite corners) and covers just under 150 square miles of area. These hexes are provided not only as a way to help define the land (and eventually aid in defining the territory of the kingdom the PCs are destined to rule), but also as an aid in tracking travel through the Stolen Lands.

In this Adventure Path, though, characters will also be taking time to fully explore hexes on the map—doing so takes much longer than
simply walking through a hex. To determine how long it takes the PCs to travel through a hex or to fully explore it, determine the group’s speed (which is set by the slowest member of the group) and consult the tables above. For traveling, the amount of time it takes to cross one hex is listed. For exploring, the amount of time listed is to fully investigate the hex. Until the PCs spend money to create trails and roads, all of the Stolen Lands are considered to be trackless. In some hexes, more than one terrain is present in a hex. In such cases, calculate that hex’s effect on travel as if it were a hex of the dominant terrain type.

  • Quests!:
You have unlocked the Quest feature! I will place a new spoiler in the header for you to keep track of quests. Please be aware that some quests may be expected to range over a long span of time in this campaign while others will be more time sensitive and require quick action. Any time you wish me to add a clue to a quest, please call it out and I will place it inside the header. See example below.

Quest: Deliver a fair amount of fangberries to Bokken.

  • Clue: Fangberry thicket 50 miles or so to the southwest of Bokken's hut.

    Quest: Locate Bokken's "crazy" brother.

  • Clue: Man turned bandit may have encountered someone fitting this description. Rumored to be part of Kressle's gang.
  • Clue: Last rumor places Bokken's brother somewhere to the south.

Quest: Special (Ali) Locate a dragon gizzard and a golem keystone.

Quest: Wanted: Bandits! The bandits in the Greenbelt need to be shown that their actions will not be tolerated!
Reward: The Swordlords of Restov are offering 400 gold once proof that bandit activity in the region has been driven down.

  • Clue: Capture or defeat several to help cull the threat of banditry in the area around Oleg's Trading Post.

Quest: Find the lair of the Sootscale Kobolds and ensure that they aren’t going to continue being a threat any way necessary.
Reward: The Swordlords of Restov will provide a reward of 800 gp once the kobold activity is under control.

  • Clue: The Sootscale Kobold Clan dwells in a cave somewhere in the Kamelands.

    Quest: Wanted: Tatzlwyrm Head!
Reward: 600 gp for a relatively undamaged tatzlwyrm head.

  • Clue: Grub claims to have seen one in the forest to the southeast.

Quest: Wanted: Slay the legendary Tuskgutter!
Reward: My prized masterwork longbow and the last of my enchanted arrows for hunting to whoever can finally kill Tuskgutter. If you can bring me the monster's head, I promise I'll even share the head cheese I plan to make out of this trophy.

  • Clue: (?) Every Greenbelt hunter has a story about Tuskgutter, each wilder than the last! Look at me! I lost my leg to the accursed Hog from Hell. Whoever manages to kill the ill-tempered beast will get a nice reward from me old, retired Vekkel Benzen.

Quest: Oleg’s been under a lot of stress lately, and Svetlana would love to cook him his favorite meal (moon radish soup) to help him relax. Unfortunately, moon radishes are relatively rare. Bring Svetlana a basket of moon radishes.
Reward: Svetlana is ready to pay a 250 gp reward to anyone who can bring her enough moon radishes to make soup.

  • Clue: A whitish radish which locals say glows during the lunar equinox. This is just a myth.
  • Clue: A patch grows somewhere between 15-20 miles south of the trading post.

Quest: Although his wife claims it’s not a big loss compared to what the bandits could have taken, Oleg knows the theft of her wedding ring has distressed her. She’s forbidden him from risking life and limb to recover it, but if anyone else can find the ring and return it to him, he’ll be very grateful.
Reward: Oleg promises 1,000 gp in trading post credit if his wife’s ring can be recovered.

  • Clue: A plain brass wedding ring set with a single pearl.
  • Clue: The bandits were the last to have it, but they might have lost or sold it already.

Quest: Capture Falgrim Sneeg, alive if possible.
Reward: Kesten can arrange a reward of four masterwork weapons of the capturer’s choice if Falgrim is delivered alive. If he’s delivered dead, Kesten can only promise two weapons.

  • Clue: Falgrim fled into the Greenbelt to become a bandit.
  • Clue: Falgrim is described as an older Varisian with graying hair and an very unruly beard. He is a former mercenary, and those who fought with him say he possesses an unnerving calm in the face of violence.

As you can see, definitive clues and uncertain clues shall be listed as black and light blue respectively. Once you're certain of a clue, tell me, and I will update the color.

Ah, yes, you. Indeed, somehow I was thinking you were already in there. go ahead and give me a roll, or I can do it. I'll pop you in once I have a number.

    1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

    Ephemeral GameMaster

I forgot to mention this. In the roll 20 map, you will most likely not be able to move your character between the lower and upper floor maps. This is due to a line of sight restriction I have to add in order to prevent peeking by moving your token around to rooms with closed doors. :P

If you go upstairs or downstairs, just post it, or let me know another way, and I can move your token between floors. I'll work out a way to let you guys do this in the future if we ever run into this again.

Hey GM. I talked to DSX and he is cool with my moves. As for "carving" a path ...my character's intentions were to only carve a way through people who resisted her trying to make her way to the bar. I had no intention of mercilessly killing innocent civilians that happen to just be in the way. I just wanted to clarify that but if there is no option but violence Kalica will certainly rise to the occasion if anyone in her party is faced with danger.

So, I'm sticking to my post. Just FYI

Er, "that man" being the half-elf, just to clarify.

I'm planning a point buy, but if we're allowed to opt for that if our rolls suck, lemme try rolling:

    4d6 - 2 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 3) - 2 = 10
    4d6 - 2 ⇒ (4, 2, 6, 2) - 2 = 12
    4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 4, 2, 4) - 1 = 10
    4d6 - 1 ⇒ (6, 4, 4, 1) - 1 = 14
    4d6 - 4 ⇒ (4, 5, 4, 5) - 4 = 14
    4d6 - 1 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 4) - 1 = 13

Hmm. I gotta run. Will analyze and decide when I get back. First impression: that blows lemmings.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Hello everyone, just a quick heads up. The game posting frequency is lagging quite a bit. Some of that is my fault, and I am willing to own that. However, going forward let's see if we can keep things a tad more lively.

I will begin botting folks who seem a little less active, especially if a glut of you are all posting, I will push the rest forward to keep the momentum. Often these bot posts will more or less take your character out of the action unless the scene just doesn't allow it. We have a much larger group than the typical average for Kingmaker, but trust me, you'll still be feeling the challenge.

If anyone feels like posting here or PMing me with instructions or ideas on what kind of things their character would do if I have to bot you, feel free. I will always try to take your character motivations into account.

On that note, I will be getting a new post up soon and moving anyone who hasn't already posted along so the rest of you can get back into the game. :-)

Hi all, I'm going to be off visiting family for a while, leaving this Friday until Tuesday the 28th. I may be able to squeeze a post in here and there, but don't wait on me, just bot away.

I like the new avatar, very swish

Ya think? Kinda staying with the undead theme but updating the style. Glad you like.

I'll be away at a music festival from sometime tomorrow until early Monday. I probably won't get chance to post, thus feel free to Bot Ali as necessary.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Bad news: my job has started blocking access to Paizo. Sadly this means my posts will become super less frequent. I'm really sorry. :-/

I'm going to see if I can maybe find a way past the filter, but no guarantees.

Meows and Leo have the same problem.

I wonder if they changed the site, to be included in peoples filters? So it counted as a shop/illicit site?

Sounds like they want you guys to get back to work.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Lol, maybe. But I actually work less when I don't post. It's an outlet I need or else I have trouble staying focused.

Needless to say that Llewyn post is the first of a couple to come. Also, I believe I have found a way to circumvent the filter in a non-policy breaking manner. So I should be able to keep things rolling.

    Female Helmet Cat

I think work filters in general have caught on to Paizo being classed as a game. I'm no longer able to post from work either. But I'll do what I can to keep my posts happening. And how are you circumventing the filter? This is relevant to my interests.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

A question has come up regarding the visibility or other awareness of someone channeling positive or negative energy (or variant as appropriate). As GM, I am ruling that people would be able to "feel" it. So anyone within the radius of Ali's healing sphere would notice it happened.

Now a group vote on the other aspect. Should the action be "visible," make a sound, or having some other effect making it known what Ali has done? As this could have actual gameplay and roleplaying effects, I want a consensus since I have been unable to locate anything on the Paizo forms or other sources which addresses what senses could or would become aware of a channel?

    Possible thoughts are:

    • A burst of whitish (or darkish) light literally erupts out of the divine caster
    • All those affected by the channeling have divine "steam" coming off of them for a second or two
    • Some kind of sound occurs, maybe a whoosh or a crackle
    • Illusory or ephemeral imagery indicative of the cleric's deity or domain comes into view.

What do you guys think? Looking for a vote on if it should have a noticeable effect whether it be visible or auditory, and if so, what kind.

I think there definitely should be some tell - a visual and audible one should be alright. Maybe a soft healing glow centred in the area, or just a feeling of peace and calm in the area (though this does clash with the calm emotions spell)

    They should look like this.

I think (and agree) the developers left it up to you to decide how magic is sensed in game. If high fantasy is what you are going for then I see no problem with lights and wisps of energy circling the caster. Or everyone in the area can become overwhelmed with a feeling of comfort as their wounds are healed. Like I said it comes down to how you as gm want to describe it.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Treppa took my idea for when Brokk goes in to Bloodrage. I guess I will have to use my other idea. Kratos was a bloodrager in the God of War games right?

I was thinking what Stavo said, just a kind of feeling of goodness?

I dunno. What do I know.

But going super saiyan is preeeeety tight.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Hey all. My posting workaround is working, but I have been having a little trouble getting the map I want to use to load up in Roll20. Also, I went and visited my mom this last weekend, so I didn't have a chance to mess with it. We will be trying to get this really rolling here this week.

    Sorry for the delays!

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Think I have the map issues handled, and I'm almost ready to get that revealed. Also, the server where I plan to house the music and sound effects should be a green light by this weekend. That should really help the mood. :-D

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Hey everyone. So I think everyone's done roleplaying out things in the storeroom?

Assuming that's true I'm about to move things along. Since no one is actually leaving the storeroom, but everyone keeps talking about it, I will assume that this is the plan.

If anyone is not going to move with the main group outside, or has any further RP to do with of the players, Arielle, or the NPCs, do it now. Silence will be assumed to be accepting what I have said here and we will be moving into the next stage of the combat scene.

    Get ready! >:-D

    Ephemeral GameMaster

I know I suck as GM sometimes....sorry. I have sworn a pact in blood with Mickey the Rat himself that I will get the next scene posted by tonight!

So again, sorry for the epic delay. Hopefully you guys will find the next part equally as epic.I feel the storeroom RP deserves some, so everyone can have an extra RC.

Regarding RCs, you guys are probably wondering about why I'm so free with those. One, I think you guys deserve some benefits for being awesome. Two, there's a lot of ways I can kill you. I mean it's astounding how easy it should be as a GM in 3.P to kill players. So quite frankly, I want to be able to use all the neat toys I have which can wreck you, but not to the point where it is completely unfair as you will probably not have seen what the enemies can do. I feel RCs will allow you a lot of pulling it out by the skin of your teeth moments like we always see in books, shows, and movies.

Realize this, I pretty much have no concept of exactly how CR should work, and I will be reskinning a lot of the encounters for Kingmaker to be creatively interesting and less "mechanically" interesting.

    • mechanically interesting = this often creates ridiculous encounters which should never have any way of happening leading to lengthy explanations by the authors of the printed modules to try and justify why this exact combination of strangely synergistic monsters are cohabiting the exact same dungeon room and have perfectly flawless teamwork when even within the "reality" of the game setting, those same monsters should fight or eat each other or not even be able to function in that environment, etc.

Before anyone gets terrified when I say I don't understand CR, I ask you to hold judgement. Mostly because even veterans are confused by what constitutes a real true match of danger to player experience. I have read several reviews of adventures lambasting this encounter or another as being overly difficult even though on paper the CR should match the characters' level or lower. And then counter lambasts of people criticizing why those same people found it difficult. This has pretty much lead me to think that CR is really inaccurate indicator, and that going with your gut is the best move.

I will throw things at you I think are fun, and you will either sink or swim. But not because I didn't give you every opportunity to have advantage. The RC system, the Fatigue systems, etc. And I do expect you all to be smart about things. There may be times when running or delaying a fight may be the best option or even the response the encounter was designed to have.

    Now all that said...Mwahahaha!

Yes, I'm going to really test you with this next part. Mainly because I want to get a feeling for how all the different abilities will work and see what you guys can do as a group. I'm expecting a lot of questions, and I may have to look some things up. Please be patient with me, but I do promise to try and keep this moving along and interesting. I expect there to be a lot of roleplay moments during the battle, and I won't penalize you guys for this, so don't be shy about descriptions which may be a tad more than what's allowed in a single round. As long as it's more flavor than anything and not like extra actions or movement, I'll probably be okay with it.

Any questions? If so, post them here in the discussion thread if it's lengthy. OOC is fine in gameplay for quick clarifications, but if it's something which requires a complete ruling or a challenge to something I've written, please bring it here. :-)

    Hey guys,

Sorry for a week lapse in my posting. I'm currently in England and just got back from my Best-friend's wedding and now just got a chance to post. I'm still going to be over here for a couple of more weeks but now just visiting with friends and family so things have calmed down. I have plenty of access to Internet and my iPad so I'll be checking regulary on the game and will be sure to post. Looking forward to seeing more game Pinvendor so count me in! Let the adventure continue!!!

    I have Roll20 again! Yippee!

Kindral: thanks for posting the pictures of DSX in a tie. ;)

Well, I don't know what to do. I caused this mess, I guess. I can withdraw my action or hold it until later in the round.

We talked in chat about negating/ignoring my action and giving pin a chance to post NPC responses, then letting me re-act.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Based on discussion in chat, I'm moving forward on the assumption we will be redacting Roswitha's post for now. She may do the exact same thing after the NPCs have their chance to react to everything in what we will now decide is "pre-combat." I will try and get that up as soon as I can.

    Sorry.

I SAY THOSE NERDS ARE GREASED!

I say grease them, everyone has been jumping to the the conclusion these guys were the bad guys. It's reasonable to believe her lack of trust in Corvin would cause this to happen.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Your take on it is also my own, Brokk. However, since I, as GM, know and understand the true consequences of the action Roswitha has made, feel culpable since I may have allowed actions to be posted before providing information such as how the NPCs responded to the situation. This information may or may not have changed Roswitha's choice of actions which is why I became uncertain if I should leave things as they lay or offer a "do over."

Sounds good to me. The way I see it Jellink and Cerwin both vouched for Corvin. While they might have been somewhat reluctant to, their word should have been enough to treat Corvin and his gang friendly. Then you have their participation in the bar fight, the enemy of my enemy is my friend sort of thing. My point is, the signs are there that this shouldn't have happened. Let's face it, we all knew we weren't walking in to a peaceful resolution to this ordeal but treating Corvin as hostile is really the players fault. This coming from the guy playing the guy wanting to give up the kid and be done with this mess, so take that for what it's worth.

Welp, let that be a lesson to ya folks. Make sure your actions ACTUALLY do something in the game, otherwise it all falls apart and posting grinds to a halt.

Um. Are we still beating that dead horse? Everybody that needs to post has done so already, no? I'm waiting on big bad to blow us up before I take my turn.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

It's my fault. The next post is going to be kind of big. I will have it up a little later.

(let it be known I was referencing MY song action, not anyone elses.)

    Ephemeral GameMaster

Sorry time got away from me. But since I took tomorrow off, I will definitely have the post ready to go. Hopefully in the morning.

    Ephemeral GameMaster

It's pretty swell all of you are protecting Brokk like that. He can get a little sensitive, so showing him you care is awfully nice. :P

    For all who come after:
At the time this joke was made, the party had inadvertently formed a circle around Brokk on the combat map.
