Kingmaker AP - Into the Stolen Lands! (Inactive)

Game Master Haldhin

Running the Kingmaker Adventure Path
(Shared Resources Link)

1 to 50 of 88 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I have decided to take over an active Kingmaker AP game that has three current characters. They are only a few encounters into the game, and now is a natural time to introduce some additional people. As such, I am looking for at least two, probably three, more characters. Current needs are arcane and skills, so preference will be given to classes supporting those roles. That said, a great concept and brilliant background will trump everything when I select characters.

Recruitment will be open through Friday, Oct 26th at 5pm EST. Characters will be selected no later than Saturday, Oct 27th at 5pm EST.

Character Creation
Ability Scores: 20 point buy
Races: all core races, aasimar, tiefling (including ARG options)*
Classes: all except gunslinger (no guns, so no musketeer, etc)
Feats and Traits: 2 traits, 1 must be campaign; no grit/gun feats**
Alignment: No evil
Level: start at 1st level
Starting gold: average by class

*I am willing to consider other races, but they must have an excellent background.
**The Kingmaker trait Noble Born – Surtova is not available.

General Campaign Information
Players should be able to post once a day during the week. Weekend posting is encouraged, but not strictly enforced.

I use Google Drive for pictures, maps, and other shared resources. Based on what I've seen in Kingmaker PbP games, I expect this campaign to have a significant number of additional documents, so another site may also be used (i.e. Obsidian Portal).

Suggestions
Your character should:
1) make sense for the setting and for the campaign
2) play well with others (IC and OOC)
3) have a well-written background, including a brief history and personality strengths/ flaws. Managing to include a couple of plot hooks are a plus!

Posting history in other games is also something I may look through; prior activity may be a small factor in selection - it will not be the determining factor for anybody.

I look forward to reading everyone's submissions. Feel free to ask questions as needed and I'll respond asap.

Backstory:

Arcadia, the mysterious continent, lies across the Arcadian sea. A place of mystery and wonder; Centuries ago Ulfen settlers called Arcadia their new home, until the natives took offence to their presence and nearly drove them from their home.

The native tribes called skraelings by the Ulfen settlers were considered savage and ruthless. But this I can tell you is not entirely true.

I am White Eagle, son of Ten Bears, and I am a skraeling. Though I was not born on the land my ancestors once called home My Father and I have held to the teachings passed down to us by my father’s father and his father before him. I am of the Defohy tribe, Nomads always moving with the changing seasons making our home in the plains of Arcadia in places where our horses may graze and the fish are abundant.

The Defohy depended on the land for their survival. The earth and rivers provided roots and berries, fish and game. Farming and land ownership were foreign to the Defohy. They believed (and still do today) the earth was not to be disturbed by hoe and plow. The land was their home, not a commodity to be bought or sold.
Chief Yellow Wolf, a relative of Chief Ten Bears said, “We were always here. The Great Spirit placed us on this land of ours.”

Many miles south of the Ulfen settlement others from your world also journeyed to Arcadia. Settlers, seeking trees, animals and metals came to our home. These settlers moved into land we have journeyed to for countless generations. We sought to make peace with the newcomers and many of them welcomed us. We showed the settlers how to farm the soil in Arcadia and where to hunt good food. The Ulfen were friends. My people called all who came to our land as Ulfen as we had no concept of the different races of other lands. To us what you call elf was called spirit beings that were as mysterious to us as our home is to you.

Not all settlers who came to our home were friend. Bad Ulfen, I have learned were called Cheliax in your tongue, came to take gold from the hills and mountains of Arcadia. They enslaved many skraeling to dig the gold from the earth.

My ancestors became scattered and many were sent on ships to Cheliax home. Among them was my grandfather Chief Charlo, whose wife was with child. My father was the first of the skraelings to be born on this new world.

My father was strong and it is said that he had the strength of a bear and would do the work of ten men and so was given the name Ten Bears. Ten Bears was a slave like all the skraelings brought over to Cheliax.

However the Great Spirit saw what was happening to the people of Arcadia and took pity on them. Many skraelings were freed when guardians of freedom who bore the sign of the eagle freed our people.

Ten Bears lead a small group of Defohy north until we found land to call home in what is called Restov Plains. There. Our people prospered living peacefully on the plains and many new Defohy were born.

Ten Bears took a wife and bore a son, White Eagle.

For many years my people lived freely on the Rostov plains, trading goods with the settlements in this new land. My brother, Swift Elk, would lead hunting parties and trade furs with other Ulfen hunters and trappers.

Soon though Cheliax warriors would try and destroy the peace my people have created. (Note Cheliax is the name given to all human bandits, brigands, or other unsavory types, including warlords). Many disguised as Defohy attacked and scalped local Brevoy villagers.
Trust of the local villages and settlements was beginning to deteriorate. Ten Bears journeyed to the Ulfen city of Restov to plead the case of our people.

The Mayor agreed to a treaty with Ten Bears. The Defohy people would provide one of their own and explore the place called the Stolen Lands and there the Defohy could go and make a new home. And in return the people of Restov would assist and help protect the Defohy people.

During this time White Eagle had recently returned from his journey of the Wyakin to receive his guardian spirit. White Eagle had a vision while alone that he would be a great leader of his people guiding them to new lands and better hunting grounds. White Eagle was to go to fulfill Ten Bears promise to the Chief of Restov.

The Defohy have a strong belief in dreams and visions. Young boys and girls went alone to remote places hoping to receive knowledge of a personal guardian spirit. This personal WYAKIN would warn them of danger and give them special powers. In all phases of daily life, the Defohy thought of the spirits of forces and objects around them as supernatural WYAKIN

he may require small tweeks but should be enough for feel for the character.

took the Pioneer trait for the AP

Obsidion Portal is blocked from my work computer but I have access at home (of course) so there may at times be a delay in my response on particular documnets until I am at home to check them out. I do have access to dropbox at work though.

I have never used Obsidian Portal. Is it similar to Dropbox or does it host actual game posts?

Well I have this guy for kingmaker, need to check him to make sure he fits your req. as well as update him sense he is kinda old. ;)

Former Bandit, Thug Rogue focusing on Bluff, Intimidate and Diplomacy. From a Kingmaker that collapsed. Only ever had one encounter. All details in profile.

I will be submitting Willow, an inquisitive Gnome Sorceress.

I'll be submitting Aleksander, a human inquisitor of Gorum. Crunch to follow.

Do you have any guidance on classes/roles still needed?

GNOME

This character was created as a monk, but I've recreated him as a ninja. Let me know what you think.

His background has that he's a Surtovan bastard, but that could be changed if necessary.

Background:
As Gua Zhen entered the small tavern in Pitax, he had a strange sense that he had been there before. He knew, as he'd read many times, that he actually had been. But this was the first time he could remember experiencing it.

Zhen was the bastard son of a Surtovan noble. The noble, in his shame of impregnating a simple farmer's daughter, intended for both her and her newborn child to be removed from Brevoy - permanently. He came to her one night, prepared to kill the both of them. As she slept, he cut her throat. But when he saw his son, he was unable to commit the deed - he looked just like him.

He wrapped him in blankets and made his way to a small, dirty house. He knocked frantically on the door, and after a few moments, the door cracked open and an older Tian woman appeared. Seeing who it was, she allowed him to enter and quickly closed the door behind her. "What kinda trouble you in now, boy?" she asked, eyeing the "package" he carried warily. He hastily made a lie about finding this small child alone in the street and needing to ensure its safety by getting it as far away from here as possible. She shook her head sadly and ripped the bundle from his hands. "This will cost you, boy. Give me that fancy necklace and all the gold you're carrying - I'll ask for 10 times that amount when I return." He hesitated for only a moment before lifting the locket over his head, withdrawing his money pouch and handing both over to the woman.

Over the next several days, the old woman made her way to Pitax where she had arranged for a contact of hers to take the child to Tar Kuata to live and learn from the faithful and powerful monks of Irori there. As she handed the child over, she put the noble's necklace in the child's small pouch of belongings.

As Zhen grew older, he slowly became aware of his origin, thanks to the sporadic letters he received from the old woman. She told him of his father, his mother's fate and how he had ended up in Osirion. In every letter she urged him to stay put and to continue his training. That the time for his return would come. But to remain patient.

That time came in his 24th year. He received news that his elderly guardian had died in her sleep. Seeking guidance from his masters, he decided to leave the monastery to pay his respects.

Two months after receiving word of her death, the tall, bald man, honed muscles rippling beneath his simple clothing, finally returned to where his new life began. His striking green eyes peered around the room, looking for someone who might be helpful.

His knuckles turned white as he gripped the small necklace - the only real token from his past - tightly in his left hand. Approaching the bartender he asks simply, "Sir, is it possible that I might find passage to Port Ice in this village?"

For those wondering, Obsidian Portal is a website that allows people to create webpages and repositories for their campaigns. It is created specifically for gaming, whereas G-Drive and Dropbox are just for storage.

My point was that I may not keep everything in a single shared folder and may end up archiving certain documents at some point. I'll certainly work with the players to find a solution that everyone is able to use.

Here is the website if anyone wants to see it.

I'll begin providing feedback tomorrow evening, but thanks to those who have responded so far.

@FireberdGNOME: The group does not currently have any arcane or skill-focused characters.

Submitted for your approval, one Caelius Nicos formerly of House Lodovka and his majesties prison.

Looking to fill the skill slot. Taking Acrobat Rogue for one level and then Tactician fighter. With fast learner and his 15 int he is looking at 4(tactitian)+2(int)+1(human)+1(fast learner)=8 skill pts/level and an excellent list of class skills so the skills will be covered by someone who also brings fighter HP and full bab.

Back story and full crunch behind the alias.

Dross is still a little rough, but it's a start. I'll look at traits next.

Full disclosure. Currently playing in another Kingmaker, but I can separate knowledge, I do believe.

Well I think Arumil is properly updated and ready. Let me know if anything needs changing. I could expand on his background and such if its not enough. Also added a spoiler for his long term goals, doubt some of them will ever be done but hey he is an elf so time is on his side. ;)

Liberty's Edge

I have a two-weapon fighter that I would like to submit. The crunch is done, just need the fluff.

Need to make a few minor tweaks, but basically a young elf wizard bent on fitting in with humans, that he finds as an exciting diversion in their short but fast-paced lives.

The game he was built for died.

interested, will post more latter

I have Aleta, a Sylph Bountyhunter (female ranger 1) that would certainly fill the Skill Slot, though her backstory needs to be retweaked for this AP. I have really wanted to play Kingmaker since it came out, but there just aren't any games near me to let me stretch my adventure legs any!

Dotting for interest. Will submit an arcane character today.
Is it possible to see the current group composition?

Good luck to all.

Grand Lodge

I'll submit Calinthas, half elf Bard. I use Obsidian Portal currently for my table top game. Aside from the lack of a die roller, it's excellent

My submission...

Vanyalanthiriel Giliath, an Elven Starsoul Sorcerer left on Golarion after her parents disappeared ten years ago...

(This would be my first PbP, but look forward to experiencing the format)

I would also like to submit my half orc ranger Asdoukar. His role will be the skill specialist (Stealth, DD etc). In its current reiteration, he is at 5th level, but I will level him accordingly in the near future. Crunch also almost ready.

Asdoukar

When is the final cut to be made?

Statistics are ready for my submission; Human Red Draconic Sorcerer - Varnius Vol.

Will post all backstory and other elements later today, with the basic gist being he has been given a choice between self imposed exile to the Stolen Lands...or hanging.

I have done plenty of PBP in the past (albeit on a different account) and am familiar with the format.

-NothingBoy-

Gavin is ready for your consideration. He supports skills, healing, and can arcane support with wands

From Daniel Stewart

Here is my submission for this AP. I still need to work on a background, but all his crunch is there.

Grand Lodge

I should mention that I've played in numerous PbP's (though not in a Kingmaker game as yet) in the past, though not on these forums. I've also run one with my old gaming group on Obsidian Portal.

Thanks everyone, it's looking like I'm going to have some interesting submissions to read through. Always a nice problem to have. :)

No feedback yet, but wanted to answer a couple of questions:

@NothingBoy: Current group consists of a aasimar barbarian (unarmed), half-ogre barbarian (two-hand weapon), and a human cleric of Shelyn.

@Proud Grognard: recruitment closes this Friday at 5pm. Choices posted asap after that, no later than Saturday at 5pm.

Posting for interest more to come

Here is Lemuel Bender, alleged physician and arcane experimenter. He has run into trouble with moneylenders in New Stevten and now sees an excursion to the Stolen Lands as an opportunity to get himself out of harm's way.

I am considering taking levels in bloatmage later on if he is selected and survives.

I have a gnome prankster bard that I have submitted to a CotCT PbP. We should hear today, if he is not accepted I will pop him over here and do some backstory and trait altering. Very interested in this AP

I would also like to submit Rameth here. He is part of a dead after 30 post Shattered Star. I would love to play him. I need to alter his trait, lower some stats.

the alteration to his backstory would be that the party he met were not pathfinders but rather his connection to this AP. Once I pick the trait I will elaborate. Let me know if he is at alk of interest, or if the gnome is a better choice for this.

Thanks for coming back Haldhin. My character is now complete, hope you like him.

Good luck to everyone involved, as there is some tough competition and good character concepts on here already!

Thought I would make a list. These are people who have their stats up. If you not on it then your stats are not up, feel free to correct me and good luck. ;)

Ye gods! Well the brute squad is covered. I would not want to go against this group. I have seen what an unarmed Barbarian can do and a 1/2 ogre with a two handed weapon is nightmare fuel.

Would like to point out that Caelius could easily go archer/switch hitter so as not to steal glory from the Barbarians.

Hmmmm might go plain rogue or investigator over acrobat. Will decide by cutoff. Is the cleric or the Aasimar focusing on diplomacy/talking or do you need someone for that?

I'm going to withdraw my submission. Good luck, everyone.

halfing cavalier order of the paw, will change it to match this game

Made Grimblade for another kingmaker didn't get selected. I think he falls into line with your requirements.

Dark Archive

I am throwing together a Tiefling Inquisitor of Ragathiel for this. Would it be okay to use the Oni-Spawn variant Tiefling heritage?

Submitting Randragoran Eliamantara VII, a Human, Wizard, Arcanamirium Crafter (Absalom)

Okay, here's Temerith, an Oni-Spawn Tiefling Inquisitor.

He's going to be a psuedo-face character, and the plan is to grab some more Knowledges, too, in addition to being a solid melee combatant with some Teamwork feats.

He's quiet and nonintrusive (except when acting as an Inquisitor, of course!) and generally will act long before he speaks, due to a long history of being an outcast due to his heritage. He tends to keep his tail wrapped around his waist and wear his beloved hooded leather coat everywhere, but his devilish features happen to make him exceedingly good at his occupation as a soldier and inquisitor.

Working on the stats, should have them done later today.

Skathi Northwind, Sylph Winter Witch convinced she's the daughter of the North wind.

Background:

Born on Acuben Isle as part of the poorer part of the Lodovka noble house Skathi was quick to discover she was different from the other children. While the girls played with dolls and the boys played with toy swords (or vice versa) Skathi would just sit outside and watch the clouds go by. As the others grew older and became teens she still was a child, though she knew as much or more than any of her peers.

It was around this time, when Skathi slowly approached puberty, that other differences started to manifest. Her hair turned white while her eyes turned bright blue and slowly her skin started to show swirly patterns in a light blue while her skin paled slightly. To her parents, both normal humans, this was a bigger shock than it was for Skathi herself. She had always considered herself different from the other children and her change in looks only reflected how she felt inside. Only thing that shocked her was when the cold winter winds started talking to her, claiming to be her distant ancestor.

While Skathi spent more time gazing at the clouds and learning more from the whispers of the wind, eventually accompanied by a raven with eyes that matched hers, he parents and siblings were further ostracised from their family. When Skathi finally realised this they had been removed from their family housing and were under threat of being forced to leave Wintrebreak and even Acuben Isle as a whole. They had not come to her about this nor did they threaten to force her of the isle, probably because they feared her abilities.

Offended by both the backstabbing towards her family and the undeserved fear of her Skathi literally stormed into the chambers of one of the lords of the house, gale force winds following her in. There she pleaded him to let her family stay and instead let her go away, even though she hadn't done a thing to offend the man. Her distant cousin, both touched by her pleas and scared by her display of force decreed that her family could stay if she left, and she did.

Since then many years have passed during which Skathi wandered along the coast of the Lake of Mists and Veils and the northern Icerime Peaks. She learned both of the birth of many cousins and of the passing of her parents, but because of her banishment from the isle all she could do was send a message to her siblings. The longer she was away from the isle and her family the more it gnawed at her. When the news of an expedition into the Stolen Lands issued by the various noble houses reached her ears, Skathi decided to jump on the opportunity to prove herself and maybe put an end to her exile from Acuben Isle.

I'd love to apply for another DM Haldhin-run game, but I just don't have the time now. Plus there's a plethora of great applications here already! Looking forward to watching this one, though. Good luck to all of the applicants - you're in for a fun game with a great DM!

Been reading the gameplay thread and the DM's Carrion Crown to get a feel for the pace and style. I agree with Korvus, whoever makes the cut is getting into a great game.

NOTE TO DM: Swapping acrobat for plain rouge. Fits better and trapfinding might come in handy.

And the list keeps growing, I see my chances going down. xP

Wonder how many we will have by friday. ;)

Hey at least you didn't misspell rogue in your last post.

>facepalm<

Not to worry though every AP recruitment thread gets big. Just focus on putting out the best application you can (remembering to double check the spelling) and trust to the gods.

There will be a flood by Friday. Don't be intimidated. Look at all those characters not as competitors but as people to steal fluff and crunch ideas from.

NOTE TO DM: Caelius updated to remove Acrobat. The noble family he is associated with is listed as Lodovka but the exact family is not that important. If another would be more fitting for your machinations then I will happily change.

Considering I wrote four paragraphs of backstory at like... three in the morning, I should probably give Temerith another once-over. Probably.

Polished my background a little bit. ;)

As have I!

I'm actually impressed how little I had to change, generally you wouldn't trust anyone to write anything important at three in the morning!

The updates yesterday happened during the time I expected to spend reading over submissions since I knew I had a hectic schedule today.

So while I'm not as far along as I'd like to be, I do have some questions and feedback for some of the characters. My questions are mainly related to how the characters may or may not fit into the Adventure Path - what I'm trying to do is get a better understanding of the characters, their motivations, and relationships, so if you need clarification from me, don't hesitate to ask.

More questions and feedback tomorrow.

And thanks, Korvus. No promises, but I'll reconsider that Staff of Power you were asking about. ;)

Chief White Eagle:
My questions are related to your backstory. First, is the existence of a barbarian tribe near Restov in canon anywhere, or is it something you came up with for the character? Second, why would the Mayor make a treaty with a small group of barbarians, and then send one to the Stolen Lands with a charter that would potentially lead to him becoming a leader of a free city?

I like the backstory, I'm just struggling to reconcile it with this particular Adventure Path.

Arumil Amain:
Nice backstory. Out of curiosity, would Arumil be willing to swear fealty to a human lord, forsaking his oaths and family ties binding him to Kyonin? From what I'm reading in his background, I don't get the impression he would, but I wanted to ask to be sure.

Asok Demon Tongue:
I like the background, good character development and nice plot hooks. The biggest question I have is why would Asok actually abide by the terms of his exile? Why not keep wandering and just forget about imposing order in the Stolen Lands?

Willow Earthsong:
I did not see a backstory, please let me know if I missed it.

Gua Zhen:
Interesting backstory. I admit I was initially opposed to the idea of a ninja, but I've moved into seriously considering it, so well done. What I'm mostly curious about is how Gua obtained a charter to explore the Stolen Lands.

Caelius Nicos:
Good background, seems to fit into the story very well. Would you be willing to tweak it a bit so he receives a charter into the Stolen Lands as a final "parting gift" from his family. Hoping he'll take it and never set foot in Brevoy again. Would something like that work for you?

Dross:
My main question is how would Dross have managed to secure a charter to explore the Stolen Lands?

Jennis Silgerk:
My main question is how would Jennis have managed to secure a charter to explore the Stolen Lands?

Aleta Brumeveil:
I did not see a backstory, please let me know if I missed it.

Calinthas Aldimay:
How does Calinthas feel about his mother and brothers? Does he think of them as family, despite his lineage? What about his father - does he still maintain contact with him, or does he even know him? What would Cal's reaction be if his family was decimated in a massive attack against their holdings from a former ally who betrayed them?

Vanyalanthiriel Giliath:
How would Vanya secure a charter to explore the Stolen Lands, especially since most of her former allies have disappeared with her parents? Has she made new friends, or would she depend on old ones still helping her from other houses?

DM Haldhin:
Absolutely. Once he was out of prison he was an embarrassment and a one way trip to the Stolen lands would look like a godsend. I only made it a found later thing as Caelius was coming into the story late and might need a reason to be behind the others. I will change the background to suit this new idea. On an unrelated note are you OK with the ARG feat Fast Learner?

DM Haldhin:

Forgive me if my answer is long but I rather over explain then be misunderstood sense I like this AP. ;)

That being said. Arumil is very careful about giving his word. While Kyonin is his homeland, he has broken ties with it already. The nobles (old guard) having a strangle hold on how things are run. The current Kyonin is something of a shame to him, not that he will let that on to just anyone. He considers it a nation on the decline, taking his people down with it. He fears that as things stand his people will fade away or lose themselves beyond recovery. A kingdom frozen in time amongst a ever moving and changing world. He has no problem allying with someone who is worthy regardless of race. Those he supports he does completely.
