The Greenbelt, 20th of Neth

After short deliberation, the group decides to head back north and check on the state of affairs in the kingdom.

A two day ride takes you to the Stag Lord Fort, where a courier waits for you. He's carrying a message signed by Lukasz informing you of turmoil in Providence. The citizens, it seems, have grown sour and voices of dissidence have been heard in taverns. Lukasz mentions that it looks as though someone might have orchestrated things, as it all really started right after your departure...

"Oh crap!" Kriger responds, irritated at the news. "You know, I think we would've been better off if the place had burned down." Shaking his head in frustration as he draws his hands down his face. "Alright!" he throws his hands up, and then claps them together, rubbing them. "First things first. We find out what it is that's causing the turmoil, and then we find out who's behind it, and then we kill 'em. Sound good?" He asks, thinking this time he's plan is fail safe. They got me on my Stag Lord plan, but this time, I've got them! HA! HA! Kriger thinks to himself, quite pleased.

Davor has nothing to really say on the subject. He's a silent but strong type of character afterall.

While Kalsgrim's first instinct is to go through town with a bow and detect evil, he swallows his anger and reminds himself Erastil has given me more arrows in my quiver than that... Good idea, Servayn. I'll go out of town to some of the nearby farms and see if there is anything they've seen or heard that might shed some light into what's going on.

Sorry! Yes, we will absolutely make the best time possible getting back to the capital.

Kriger, ever the tracker in these parts, finds a fast trail that takes you quickly (three days still) back to Providence.

It is early morning as you enter town. Something is indeed different in the spirit of its good citizen. They look at you and cheer, but their cheer sound more like Finally, someone to take care of things!

Kalsgrim leaves immediately for the countryside to learn more (Dip = 29) while Janku and Servayn aim for the busiest parts of town (Dip = 21+2)...

What are Kriger and Davor doing during those hours?

Kriger looks around at the people, not sure on how to respond. Thinking of the only solution he can come up with in such a dire time, "Alright, Davor. I think this is a good time for a drink...and lots of them. And after that, I may just have to pay a visit to our local nuns." A wicked smile crosses his face, then just as quickly vanishes. "We do have nuns here, don't we Davor?" He asks as he starts out, heading for the nearest tavern.

I'm guessing drinking and wenching. Unless of course there is something useful he should be doing. Which would actually be totally against his character, mind you. I'm just saying. :)

Davor doesn't quite know how to react about the talk of nuns and shrugs his shoulders.

"Perhaps there are, I wouldn't know." he says honestly and then looks at the townspeople with curiosity. "I am curious what is wrong with the towns people..." he trails off as he wonders if some political matter or monster has been sighted, most excited if it's the latter.

"No idea. Hopefully the others will find some answers. I don't know 'bout you, but if I tried to talk to 'em, I'm pretty sure all I'd get in response is a bunch of moaning and groaning, and that'd just piss me off." He shrugs.

Curiousity striking him, "So, Davor, if you don't mind me asking, how did you come to lose your eye? No wait, wait, let me guess," he holds up a hand to stop him. "Alright, there was this fantastic battle between you and this two-headed troll, okay." Kriger steps back a pace or two to give himself some room. "Now the way I figure, is you managed a nasty bloody swing on it, cutting it from shoulder to hip," he swings an invisible weapon as he speaks. "And out of his agony, he JAMS a claw straight into your eye and plucks it out!" He acts that out, a bit angrily due to the thought of the mangy troll succeeding with such an attack. "And then you," pointing at Davor, "after realizing what it'd done, stood there and started laughing, like it was your plan all along. And then you instantly stopped laughing; like quicker than a blink of an eye," snapping his fingers, "and said: 'I still have another one you dumb <bleepity, bleep>!' And then you took your sword and removed his FREAKING HEAD before he even had a moment to realize it was gone!" Kriger yells through gritted teeth, sounding as if that would have been a fantastic sight to witness. "HA! HA! That would've been great to see!" Kriger relishes the thought of such victory. As a few moments pass, a confused look forms on Kriger's face. "Um, where was I go... Oh right! Right. Your eye. So, was that what happened?"

Kalsgrim:

As Kalsgrim takes his horse to the countryside, he notices that farmers don't give him the usual warm look. Still, they volunteer information to the baron as his words touch some hidden string in their hearts.

Trolls have been raiding the countryside for almost a week now, going unpunished, and the few that decided to stand and fight were left horribly maimed. One farmer even confides that rumours say it's all because of the baron's venture, for he and the other notables have driven the monsters back north.

Servayn and Janku:

Moving through bars, taverns, markets and temples, Servayn and Janku strike up good conversation, though it is clear that people are reluctant and angry. Some of them even ask them direct questions like: "Where were you when the trolls attacked?" or "Do you think you can just go gallivanting?". Some words are certainly not their own, and you quickly figure that someone is rousing them.

When you ask, one folk speaks of a Grigori, who often speaks at the Joyful Jim.

Male Half-orc Inquisitor/6th, AC 21, 55/55 hp

Davor actually gives a half-smile from the story Kriger gives as to where he lost his eye. He sighs and shakes his head however.
Good story, you should be a bard." though his features return back to a serious look. "I had a disagreement with my father years ago. I got him back for it." he says as he draws the blade and examins it closely. "This was his, but in the end I took off his head with it. It helped me travel out of Belkzen. There are many paladins who travel into Belkzen, after the treasure of Scarwall." he looks back at the people and walks over to the nearest citizen. "Are there any problems in the town?"

Can't think of anything else for Davor to do. If something is happening in town that is what I think it is, he'll investigate or instead spend time with the local hunters and learning about any creatures they may have come across.

Spoiler:
Servayn bites back angry replies to the assumptions the people are making, for the most part, although he eventually snaps at one accuser, gesturing at his scorched leather armor and singed hair and reddened flesh, "We spent the last week tracking down and eradicating unnatural fire-breathing beasts that could threaten merchants and outlying farms. I was *set on fire*, this week, and suffered such pain as I did not know even existed, as the flames were those of the hells themselves, to ensure your safety. What did the man who said I was 'gallivanting' do for you this week?"

Here's hoping the speaker isn't some battle-scarred cripple or something... That would totally blow my moment of righteous indignation!

Regrouping with the others, later in the day, Servayn tells them about this Grigori, and the stories he's been spreading at the Joyful Jim.

"Obviously, if there was indeed a troll attack, that's something else we have to deal with. Indeed, bringing back a few troll heads might be a helpful bonus to our attempts to stave off any bad reputation we have picked up, although if the people start complaining about bad economic decisions, that's not as easily refuted..."

Ember's 'two cents worth' consists of a question, "Can eat complainers? No?"

Servayn doesn't dignify that with a reply, and Ember snorts and puts his head back on his paws and stares into the fire.

Kriger is struck speechless as Davor moves to speak with a local citizen. His father? And he took his own father's head? Man that must've been quite the family. I think the troll story is kinder. Shrugging, Kriger moves with him, not really confident they're going to accomplish much.

Later
"Well I say we head to the Joyful Jim and find this Grigori fellow, see if his stories are true, and if they're not, we kill him." Kriger nods adamantly. As Servayn shakes his head in frustration at Kriger, "Oh wait, we don't just kill people for trying to cause unrest, right." Curiousity striking again, "Then what do we do if we find this fellow?"

As Kalsgrim rejoins the others, he confirms the troll rumors. The attacks have been going on for about a week now. A lot of the locals are thinking the attacks are due to ventures to the south, driving the creatures to the north. The dark expression on Kalsgrim face tells that they think it is their ventures to the south causing it, though he can't bring himself to say as much.

Servayn turns to Ember and gestures, and the beast grumbles, but nods and dissipates into ash with a rush of warmth.

"We should probably seek this individual, and any other rabble-rousers out, although with a minimal amount of weaponry and hostile intent. Might as well, as a point, not bother cleaning our armor or prettying ourselves up, to make it quite clear that we have not been on holiday or attending a noble gala, but hunting dangerous creatures in the area, and bear the marks of such labors."

He looks around at the assembled rulers and continues, "Myself and Kalsgrim, of those who have been 'gallivanting,' seem to be the best at turning a phrase, so perhaps it should just be us, confronting this individual, with the others following behind in case it is some sort of trap set to draw us into an ambush?"

"I can't imagine that we've made enemies as of yet that would have reason to set such an ambush, but, better paranoid than dead, I always say..."

And, obviously, a plan that involves Kalsgrim and Servayn doing a diplomatic approach and Janku, Kriger and Davor sitting around twiddling their thumbs is out of the question! Never split the party!

Absolutely. Not. EVER.

"That sounds good to me, Servayn. 'Course, cutting out his tongue sounds pretty good too." Kriger nudges Davor, smiling while nodding in approval.

"And once we've settled what needs to be settled with this fella, we then track down these stinkin' trolls, and remove their stinkin' heads, before they even realize it!" He says, getting a bit carried away as spittle goes flying everywhere. "No more losing an eye on my watch!" He states adamantly, forgetting that his take on Davor's missing eye was not in any way, shape, or form, correct.

Male Half-orc Inquisitor/6th, AC 21, 55/55 hp

Davor simply nods approvingly of Kriger's blood-lust as he too would wish to track these rolls down.
"Fire and acid we'll need. I can cast acid splash, but we'll need more firepower." he points out as he wishes to educate the group about trolls if they did not know about acid and fire being effective against them.

The group makes its way to the Joyful Jim, a small tavern on the ground floor of a two story building in a humble part of Providence.

There is quite a crowd for the time, as it is still quite early. The room is crowded and filled with loud conversation. A stage has been set near the bar.

As you come in, a few of the patrons identify you and the room hush slowly, as though a wave of silence washed on its shore. A man in his forties stands up as the room hushes. He wears a wild bear and his hair long curly hair have receded. His clothes are plain and he looks like a craftsman: "Ah! There they are... There they are indeed!" He then steps up on the stage.

Let me know how you wish to go at this.

Kriger remains silent, allowing Servayn and Kalsgrim to see what they can do to shut this troublemaker up. If they can't then I guess we can just cut his tongue out like Davor said. Yeah, I guess that's better than killin' 'im. It's more painful for sure. Kriger places his hand to cover a smile, playing it off by rubbing his mustache.

Kalsgrim pushes his way throuugh the crowd, making his way up to the stage, completely confident that no one bears him ill will (or if they do, they wouldn't dare act on it with Davor and Kriger lurking in the background).

Once up from, Kalsgrim hoists himself onto the stage, standing about a yard from the other man.

Diplomacy 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30

Grigori, I presume. He turns to the audience. Sorry we're late. We've been out in the territory crushing threats to the good people of this land like we did the mites, Tuskgutter, the giant spiders, the will-o-wisp and, oh yes, the Stag Lord and his murderous thugs. he finishes, holding up the Stag Lord's bow.

Now word has it some trolls got past us, attacking the good citizens hearabouts. We returned as soon as we heard. I see a great many here I know, many I know to work hard and earn an evening of relaxation and drinking, well earned. Our work isn't done yet. We'll come back and join you once the trolls are slain and burnt.

Turning to Servayn, he'll ask Did I miss anything?

Turning to Grigori, he'll say You seem to know where all the trouble is. You're coming, right?

(AC 18, hp 15 of 77) Summoner 9

Servayn nods respectfully to Kalsgrim, "That does appear to cover it. Grigori can tell us where to find these trolls, and we can eradicate them. It is by working together in this manner, and not turning on each other like rats, that we can accomplish great things out here, and build something for the benefit of us all, rather than simply tear down the accomplishments of others."

"I'm sure everyone is very grateful that Grigori has been doing such a fine job of helping us ensure the safety, freedom and prosperity of our community, and isn't one of those people who complain about everything, but don't actually do anything, that we are glad to have gotten away from out here on the frontier, where honest folk with calloused hands and sweat on their brow can make their own future."

"And, speaking of the sweat of our brow, I hope that after we deal with the trolls, none will begrudge us stopping for a moment to have a bath and a meal that doesn't consist of hardtack and water. I've heard it said that we've been on some sort of holiday, and, while I've never been to a fancy party or a nobleman's estate or gone somewhere on holiday, I suspect that they don't have tracking down packs of fire-breathing demon dogs on their list of festivities..."

Take 10 on Diplomacy to add 2 to Kalsgrim's roll with Aid Other, not that there's a mechanical difference between 30 and 32. :)

Secret Rolls:

The crowd nods in agreement with Kalsgrim and Servayn's eloquent speeches.

Grigori starts to speak, but something gets caught in his throat and he chokes miserably. As he struggles, he acts up and makes a big deal out of it, as though he's facing death. The townsfolk frown on his display of fragility.

Grigori finally stands there, blushing more and more, then simply retreats back to his table, clearly defeated.

"Then I discovered with aid of the goddess...lifts his holy symbol up to clearly display..."that true liberty and freedom comes from working with others for a common goal, and uniting against a cause". "I would like to speak of this further with you". "Will you come to me on the morrow, and join me in my prayers for guidance"?

Secret Rolls:

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31

Grigori stands speechless, then smiles at the priest: "I hear you Father Janku... I will see you tomorrow."

The man then turns to his meal and eats slowly, keeping his head down, visibly not in a fighting mood.

Not wanting to continue badgering Grigori, lest he appear to be intimidating the clearly cowed man, Servayn turns to see if there's a table available at this establishment (preferably one across the room from where Grigori is sitting), and sits down to order something to eat and (moderately) drink, making good on his earlier statement about wanting to eat something other than hardtack. He'll stand and eat at the bar, if no table is available, and will demur if someone offers him their table.

If anyone approaches to talk about local matters, or even a matter of law or family or whatever, he'll attempt to offer whatever advice he can, or defer to any of the others who might know about a particular subject better than himself, spending about an hour 'hanging out,' in an attempt to be more accessible to the people and get a feel of the issues that are on their minds (apart from the complaints they've already heard).

He'll show a particular interest in anyone discussing farming-related issues, as he intends to learn more about that trade, so that he can try and move the kobolds from a hunter/gatherer (pain in the butt to locals) mode and more into a farming based (good neighbors) mode.

Take 10 on a Diplomacy roll for a 22, to put on an approachable air, and offer at least companiable advice, and not appear too much of a dunce, on the matters he's not able to expertly comment upon. If Taking 10 not an option... 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 15

Afterwards, he returns to wherever he and others sleep, and conjures up first an air elemental for four minutes, and then an earth elemental, and attempts to decipher some of their respective mutterings, as he has realized that he needs to master at least a few words in their tongues, if he wishes to more effectively call upon their services.

Take 10 on Linguistics checks, just 'meta' stuff to justify learning those languages when he next raises his Linguistics skill.

"Let's get going. My blade thirsts for blood." he groans as he makes sure to move out of the way of the door. He might not like the decision, but he's not about to start a fight over this, especially if they are to rule a civilisation.

We haven't made it against the law to talk, just yet. Besides, he is not entirely wrong. I bear some responsibilty for those slain by the trolls. For now, vengeance has to suffice. But we should keep an eye on him, in case he is part of something larger.

Grigori leaves the bar without any other word.

As you stay a while, two craftsman come near your table and engage you on the tasks you've done. They are quite bold in their questions, asking whether you felt it was worth it, taking into account the poor state of things in Providence and the havoc in the surrounding farmlands. You can tell other tables are listening intently...

Also, let me know when you wish to leave and perhaps define where you're staying.

Davor will stay with the group, though he won't get involved with the discussions. If there's anywhere to spar he'll head there to train with his weapons and keep his mind focused and sharp in combat like a freshly sharpened blade and not rusted from sitting around and discussing things. His thoughts, not mine.

Sorry, it's been a long day.

"If you want, Kals, I can follow him, see what he's up to. But Janks did say he was to be praying with him tomorrow or some such." Kriger shrugs. "Are you sure this is what you want? Remember we still have trolls to deal with. Otherwise, it's your call."
