The group does his best to stay hidden and unheard. The occasional shifts of the not-so-subtle ones draw worried looks from their comrades, but everything seems to remain quiet.
Night falls and you find yourself under the darkness, without proper shelter, and under the drizzle! It's going to be a long night!
Tell me how you set yourselves up for the night. Do you take watch, do you try to cover yourselves from the cold rain? And how? More important: Don't you wish you were the infiltrator?!
Spectacular. Servayn thinks as the drizzle saturates his clothing and leaves him shivering. He hauls some relatively dry sticks up against a tree so that he can seat himself above the mud that will be soon to form, leaning against the tree, and spreads his horses saddle blanket out over it's rump and shoulders, to help it stay warm in the miserable weather.
Ember just snorts, his unnaturally warm breath leaving a trail of fog from his nostils, as he settles down on the ground, showing a reptilian disdain for the weather.
Unless Kriger convinces a group to patrol this evening, so that we can ambush them, we've got nothing to do but wait, right now. Ember and I can take first shift, if you'd like, although we could benefit from some sort of camoflauge, if you think you're up to that, Tuck, to make our position less visible if a group of bandits come from the fort, or from the way we came, to the fort...
Guidance-assisted Aid Other check to help Tuck disguise our mucky little bivouac. DC 10 if Aiding Other. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
If Tuck isn't up for that, he'll just make his own perfunctory attempt to make their position less visible from a distance, which, with his roll, will provoke a massive DC 10 Perception check to spot their camp. :)
"Your boys needin' someone to help 'em out in scoutin' the area?" He asks Akiros. "At least that way, I'll be of some use to you while I'm here. Not much for sittin' around doin' nothin'."
Servayn beat me to it. Was gonna attempt to scout out with whomever they will send. That's if they even send anybody, of course.
Having settled down in some semblance of a camp, Lukasz was ready to enjoy a night under the stars, until it started to rain. Frowning as his clothes started to get soaked, he attempted to cast a few cantrips to keep himself dry before giving up his futile attempt as the parts he was able to dry quickly got soaked again.
Ditching his plans to transcribe the spells from the confiscated spellbook into his own, he does his best to get comfortable to spend a dreary night in the rain, doing his best to set up some place that was dry and hidden from sight of the fort.
"Your boys needin' someone to help 'em out in scoutin' the area?" He asks Akiros. "At least that way, I'll be of some use to you while I'm here. Not much for sittin' around doin' nothin'."
Little bluff please?
Akiros, looks at Kriger with wide eyes: "In this weather? In the dark? With a troll in the area? What do you think we are? Salaryman? Nuns?"
At this, everybody laughs.
As if to underline his point, a shrieking howl in the distance pierces the night and freezes everyone's blood, as if a metal canvas had been ripped with violence.
The happy campers also hear that howl, but it doesn't seem as distant since they are outside of the fort.
After a moment, one of the bandits asks Akiros, obviously nervous: "D'ya think HE will join us for tha dinnar?"
Kriger joins in the laughter, "Ah yes, nuns....good times." He reflects to no one in particular. Hearing the howl, Kriger jumps to the nearest window and looks out, "What the heck was that?"
Aux says, bluntly: "Can't you see it's tha troll? 't means it's picked up a trail or something. Wouldn't wanna be outside tonite..." Then, with all this philosophy pouring out of him, he feels thirsty and empties his big mug, followed immediately by more philosophy, but in some orcish dialect perhaps, and the whole band laughs at his long burp.
Tuck sets up his own tent, removing it from the saddled horse. While not being the outdoorsman that Garrick was he does try and conceal the campsite as best he can with Servayn's help.
"Servayn, I'm not sure how effective this will be. Maybe we should of had Kriger setup a hidden camp for us before charging off. I'll follow your shift by the way," Tuck says while leading his horse to the others so they could cluster together for warmth. Horses never seem to mind the rain too much, lucky beasts. After finishing the wet and dreary chore he tries to dry off and warm up with his own blankets.
Stealth Check; 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22 (Setting up the camp?)
After the howl Tuck quickly moves out of his tent, blanket wrapped around his shoulders, sword and whip at the ready. He looks around, listening to try and figure out were and how far away the sound was. If it's nearby he'll duck down beside the tent and undergrowth hiding.
"Are you kiddin' me? This is what it's all about! HA! HA!" An idea comes into his head, "I'm going after it. Make your wagers boys, I'm coming back with troll leftovers. Hey Aux, you like 'em rare, or well done?" He gives him a slap on the arm. "Any of you dare to come with me, come on. Otherwise, if I'm not back by tomorrow, then all of you who bet on the troll, collect your money." He says as he gathers his things preparing to leave.
"I don't see how you all just stay cooped up in here. I haven't survived this long waitin' on death. If I see it coming my way, I take the battle to it." He gets a little quieter but still speaks loud enough for all to here, "That's what makes livin' fun! HA! HA!"
A big smile blossoms on Aux's face. Some of the other bandits pick up on it. Dovan looks suspicious, but keeps to himself. Quickly, a "possey" is set up of Aux and four bandits. "I like your ideeee!" Says Aux as they leave the fort, Aux and Kriger riding horses while the four bandits are on foot, carrying torches.
The rain has taken a pause, and the moon is starting to show slowly.
When exactly is this going on. Janku prayed for his new spells at dusk, so Kriger must have went in in early darkness. Is the three hour limit on the status spell expired yet?
It's two hours or so after dusk. No more status. You are freezing but have not yet started sleeping. So you notice the group heading out. Please plan for their coming and let me know how you position yourselves, then run stealth with no ACP as you are waiting for ambush.

As you crouch in the wet grass, your lungs fill with reminiscences of wet oat, lavander, a dash of mint and, yes, something composty...
The moon seems to push the clouds aside and shapes can be seen across the hill. Four of them walking, carrying torches, with two more on horses, in your direction, along the path leading away from the fort. At this distance, details remain elusive (1,000 feet).
Your hear muffled voices and the occasional laughter. Their armors are noisy in the night, filling the darkness around with metal tinges.
You hear scuttling noises in the distance. The sound of loud footsteps crushing the grass, trying not to stomp. It's unclear what kind of beast this is, but it's big.
Please let me know hoe you are set up as the bandits approach.
As you leave the fort, Auchs carrying a lance with a big grin on his face, the bandits are all excited and you see them moving to the battlements. They're cheering the names of the merry band as they slip out of the fort. Akiros has chosen to go in the tower to better watch the show. Dovan is nowhere to be found...
Kalsgrim:
You notice bandits lining up on the battlements in the distance.
Kal turns to the others and quietly says Something is coming, and we have an audience. At the mention of an audience, he gestures to the fortress wall in the distance.
"Do you think they've spotted us? I would be surprised considering how well lit their fort is and how dark it is out here. Better yet, what is trying to sneak up on us?" whispers Tuck as he tries to melt deeper into the shadows.
Servayn leans to Ember and whispers, "Can you bite the lurking beast and lead it to the men from the fort? If we can pit them against one another, and Kriger can avoid getting killed in the ensuing melee, it will go better for us than if we have to fight them both independently..."
He softly incants a cantrip to help Ember to locate the beast.
Ember peers into the darkness, attempting to divine the location of the sneaking creature.
If he spies the beast, Ember will attempt to stealth close enough, perhaps settling down along the beast's path of movement, to make a single attack and then flee in the direction of the band of men from the fort.
Kriger looks back at the camp and raises his fist in response to the cheering. He attempts to get a count of how many bandits he can see and to see if he can spot Dovan as well. "YEAH! I told you this is what livin's all about Aux!"
Seeing everyone get a little tense and spotting a flicker of light outside the wall, Lukasz stays still as he clears his mind and prepares to cast, grabbing as a few pinches of different ingredients.
Ok, there is a hill, there is a fort in the distance, with people possibly watching. There is a road, and a troll... Let me know where you are located with respect to what's known, so that I can set up the map accordingly.
As I understood it, Servayn and the others remained beyond the edge of the cleared area around the fort, so that we could benefit from cover. With the exception of Ember, moving towards the unknown thing with the stealth of a stealthy thing being stealthy, I think we're staying put, for now...
I would like to be positioned with as much blocking line of site between myself and either the troll or the fort as possible. I don't like advertising to the bandits that there's more out here than the beast.
Not the stealthiest of people, Lukasz will do his best to not be in sight of the fort's wall so will be positioned with the hill between him and the fort and he will face the direction of the beast, more wary of the unknown than the flickering light and horse hooves of the bandits.
Are the four bandits with the torches walking in front of Aux and myself, or behind us? Or are we just in a bunch?
"Keep your eyes peeled, Aux. Let's try and spot this beast before he spots us." As he squints to attempt to see as far as he can in the dark. Maybe we can make it to the camp before we meet up with the troll. Else, the Gorumite's gonna be mad that he wasn't here to help take down a troll! If that's the case, I'll have to remember to explain in detail how I cut it to pieces and how it was such a 'glorious' battle! HA! HA! A wry smile creeps up on his face at the thought.
Perception to hopefully catch notice of the troll before it notices us: (Yeah, I know it's dark. But I might as well.)
As the group of bandits approach, everyone stiffens as they move slowly above the rim of the cliff. The four bandits carrying torches are walking in front, looking through the darkness, their swords in hand.
The first bandit catches sight of Janku as the group springs the trap.
In the night, a sharp and terrifying howl slashes through the night, freezing the blood in your veins. Ember has found the troll!
Surprise Round

Bandit in F.5/3.5
Bushes and rocks are difficult terrain and can provide cover. You can stand on a rock with a balance DC 15 for higher ground.
Please post actions that can be copied and pasted to describe your character's movement and actions.
Servayn just shakes his head, bewildered at how untenable this situation has become. Kalsgrim somehow got separated by such a gulf that none of the spellcasters can reach him to apply enlarge person or healing magics, and Ember so utterly failed to get between the troll and bandits that he's not even in sight. Indeed, he may have gotten out of range and dissipated back to whatever plane he came from, for all Servayn knows...
Time to improvise, he thinks, praying that he has some greater destiny than to be eaten by a troll this evening. Cayden, protector of fools, drunkards and unruly children, be kind this night!
He steps a pace to the west, and attempts to hiss the words to a grease incantation beneath his breath, positioning it to target the ten foot square beneath the two centermost bandits.
columns E and the row between E and F, rows 7 and 8, counting down from the top, Ref DC 16 or fall down, go boom, hopefully inspiring the troll to take advantage of their misfortune, and making enough noise in the process to distract from his own movement...
Oh, my bad! Since the action is kinda dependent on NPCs at the moment, Servayn delays his action until the Ember either provokes the troll, or he's completely lost the initiative... The grease spell from the previous post will still be his most useful choice of action, so, unless the situation changes so that it's no longer a viable choice, he'll trigger it just after Ember clears those squares, in his mad dash.
Ember would like to make a single attack on the troll during a surprise round, and then use his action to flee directly into the midst of the bandits (as a double-move, if necessary, and passing right through and past melee range, if possible). He's not exactly Sun Tzu when it comes to provoking attacks of opportunity, but he's hoping that the element of surprise will prevent him from getting eviscerated by either troll or bandits.
Ember attack, darkvision allow him to ignore lighting penalties 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25 claw damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
While he could take advantage of pounce to attempt to kill a bandit on his full action, he's got instructions to let the troll do that...
With grim determination Tuck follows Kalsgrim's lead and strikes the closest bandit. He whistles sharply, honing his blade with bardic magic, and carefully strikes.
Move to closest bandit, swift action to activate Arcane Strike, Combat Expertise -1 attack / +1 AC (AC17), attack the bandit with rapier.
If Auchs is the closest:
"This man looks like he could be part ogre..." Tuck quips while quickly gesturing and calling forth a patch of grease underneath the huge man.
Cast grease under Auchs, if possible including another bandit.
If Kal moves but doesn't attack:
As the paladin moves into position Tuck stays put and plans to bolster the group. After dropping the whip he pulls out his flute and begins to play a haunting melody that stirs the spirit. Free to drop, move to draw, standard to start a bardic perfomance to inspire courage.
WTH? My last post included the attack roll and damage roll for Ember's attack action, and now it's a day later and there's nothing? Grr. It was a nice roll, too.
After the surprise round, Ember will haul butt away from the troll, and try to end his movement on the other side of the bandits (ignoring a possible use of pounce to kill one, since he's trying to not get eviscerated either by the troll *or* the bandits, and ending his action out of 5 ft. step-and-attack range of either).
Heh, the new attack roll was only one less than the one that mysteriously vanished. Like all fish stories, the one that got away was bigger...
Sorry Set, we had different assumptions. I assumed that Ember going in the darkness and unknown meant I would control her actions, and that you wouldn't know how it went (they are in my secret rolls). In a way, it keeps the suspense. Fortunately, we'll come to about the same conclusions. It has an intelligence of 7 though, so we'll see how it comes down.
Kal, Janku and Kriger left in the surprise round, then the front bandit, then round 1 begins.
Seeing that his wonderful hiding spot was compromised, Janku steps into view of the bandits, brandishing his holy symbol. His visage seems to take on an alien, and vicious form...somehow larger with long blood tipped spikes lining his armor; his face a flaming skull with red embers for eyes, and long fangs.
Is that the Gorumite? You gotta be kiddin' me. Well, this just got real interesting. Didn't expect to see them so soon.
Kriger rides up next to Auchs, "Looks like we're in an ambush, Auchs! Which one are you gonna finish off first?!" He says with wild eyes as he grips his axe a little bit tighter.
Sorry Set, we had different assumptions. I assumed that Ember going in the darkness and unknown meant I would control her actions
That's totally cool with me. Feel free to alter anything I say, as Ember is very much a free-willed creature, and my 'orders' are, to him, more like 'suggestions.' :)
