"Well, there's doors on this floor we've not yet opened."

Oh. I thought we checked them all out. Oh! Oh! I know (now that I looked at the map); you mean the West door way back in room 1?
"Probably a good idea to check there before heading down. I forgot about it too."
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
"I agree. We were rather distracted by the sound of battle to bring us here and forgot about that other door."
HP 92/92 | AC 11 T 11 FF 10 CMD 12 | F+8 R +5 W +7 | Init +5 | Perc +0 Lowlight
Zandu nervously follows the rest of the party.
Nyroba steps up and checks the door (in the middle of the map). There is no doorknob, handle or visible hinges; this door appears to only be able to be opened from the other side.
You all move back to the west door in the entrance hall, and open it.
In the center of this room is a large pool of clear water, fed by a fountain on the wall above it. The fountain has a stone statue of a weeping maiden holding the slain body of Kassen, but his head has been broken off and is nowhere to be seen. A voice booms out from the darkness, saying, “Magic is the key.” The voice slowly fades, leaving a dreadful silence.
The door to the south is locked.
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
Acting on a hunch (the voice from the darkness)…
Bolonwr will try to cast a Detect Magic spell on the statue to see if anything interesting happens.
"Good thinking Bolonwyr." Tecolote will try the same thing on the door in case that is what the voice is referring to.
The only magical aura in the room is coming from the bottom of the pool of water, about forty feet below the surface.

Nyroba scans with Detect Evil as well. When Bolonwyr determines the presence of magic, she looks down into the pool, trying to see, with her darkvision if necessary, what is down there.
looking closely, Nyroba is able to see there are hundreds of keys on the bottom of the pool.
No evil auras are detected.

"Right. We need to get one of those keys. Guess I'm going swimming."
Nyroba takes off her armor and shield, stripping down to her smallclothes, and dives down into the water.
Nyroba can hold her breath for 28 rounds, and without armor, has a +4 to Swim. I'll take 10 if I can for 14 to her to swim down to the bottom, grab as many keys as she can carry, perhaps using a sack or something if anyone has one, and then swim up, and repeat as needed to get the magic key.
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
"Keys? What keys? Oh … " before Bolonwr can say anything before Nyroba dives into the pool "… THOSE keys! I didn't think to look there! Oh well. I can't swim anyway."
With that, Bolonwr will cast Detect Magic toward the bottom of the pool to see if he can get an idea of what keys, if any, are magical down there.
"Not all that crazy about getting wet. Thanks Nyroba. Once you have them I'll help see if we can find the magic key." As each handful of keys comes spilling out, Tecolote helps to detect magic on each key until we are able to identify a magical one.
It takes about fifteen minutes for Nyroba to bring up enough keys to find the one with the magic aura.
You now have the key with the magic aura. Which door do you open?
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
"I think we should try that key on the South-west door. Just because it is furthest from the entry into this room."
"Sure, let's try that one first."

Nyroba shakes out her hair and dresses again as quickly as she can. "Alright, let's take a look." she says as she readies her flail.

"Do you want to have a go at unlocking the door, Nyroba? You were the one who figured out where we ought to look for a key!"
HP 92/92 | AC 11 T 11 FF 10 CMD 12 | F+8 R +5 W +7 | Init +5 | Perc +0 Lowlight
Zandu nods enthusiastically at somebody other than him being in charge of opening the door.

"Alright." Nyroba takes the key and steps up to the door to unlock it, before looking it over for any signs of a trap.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
You are sure there are no traps on the door. The door opens with a creak. Behind the door is long corridor is flanked by a row of human statues, set into alcoves on each side. The statues look like Kassen, and each one holds a longsword out in front of it. The blades of roughly half the statues are wrapped in leather padding.

"Those statues worry me.. but what worries me more is the pressure plate between the third pair of statues..."
"Good eye Zandu. Of course dealing with it seems to be a skill we're lacking in our little team. Maybe we can throw something onto it to trigger it." Tecolote gets out one of his normal wakizashi's and tosses it down the corridor to land on the pressure plate.

1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
"Aye, that's a trap if I've ever seen one."
When his wakizashi hits the pressure plate, all of the statues suddenly swing their swords downward. The swords remain in place, and it looks like it is going to be tricky to get past them now, requiring an acrobatics or escape artist check DC 10 to pass without taking 1d4 damage.

Well, this ought to be fun! Woo-hoo!
"Well, I guess that takes care of that. I'll go first."

"I spoke too soon! These things are still some sharp!"
I reckon that's the aftermath of his poor perception roll earlier!

Zandu pays attention and carefully passes by the surprisingly sharp swords.

"Everyone okay, yes? That could be a problem if we need to leave in a hurry."

"Well, they were placed here for the trial of the Everflame, which as you said before, isn't meant to kill anyone, just test their abilities. If we smashed it or something, the town would have to build it again."
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
"I'm okay now. Thanks to Nyroba's healing skills."
You open the door to the south, which reveals a larger two level room. One half of this lofty chamber has a lowered floor, with stairs on either side to reach the bottom. Standing opposite the door is a tall wooden statue of Kassen grasping a gigantic wooden shield in each hand. One of the shields is inscribed with the word “home,” while the other reads “family.”

Almost. Oh well.
"Does anyone think this is what we're supposed to be looking for?"

"We're looking for a flame, not a statue."
Nyroba goes forward towards the statue, looking at the shields. "Home. Family. Are we supposed to decide which is more important or something?"

Goody!
"Look, everyone! There's a keyhole … " as he points to it to it " … over there! Just behind the statue."
"I guess the magic key from the pool goes there. But does it cause the statue to come to life or prevent it from coming to life?"
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
@ Keolin Portara:
I take it that Mage Hand can not manipulate something like a key turning in a key hole?
As opposed to being limited to moving a small object from A to B only (doesn't hurt to ask).
"We'll never know unless we try. I'll volunteer if you want."
Pending the answer on mage hand.
Male Half-Orc Sorcerer (inactive)
OOPS!
I should've noticed this earlier; the Mage Hand won't work. That key is magic and Mage Hand specifies it does not on magical items.
Tecolote shrugs and puts one of his kukris away, then takes the key and tries placing it in the figure. If nothing happens, he tries turning it.
