Garric will try a Fast Dismount as a free action (DC 20): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22
Then he will shoo away his horse from the danger and shoot same wolf Obi shot at: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20; Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 and then move back 20'.
Torod sidesteps 5' step to put a bit of distance between himself and the overlarge wolf. Then he strikes out with the power of the storm
Stormburst: to hit 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 R Touch
Stormburst: damage 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 + pen
After the sword strikes true, opening a large gash in the wolf, Eadric shifts his position (5' step) to put himself between the wolf(s) and the rest of the party.
You should have stuck with deer and rabbits... you shall find only death here today... no meal.
Eadrics words are confirmed when Garric's arrow penetrates the wolf's heart. The wolf manages to leap into the air buffeted by Torod's storm and run 40 yards before collapsing in death!
The last living wolves are asleep under the effects of Ellaria's spell, one is gravely injured and the other is merely sleeping.
As you finish the battle with the hungry wolves you note that the day is on the wane and likely you should either go forward and find a spot worth camping in or return to Oleg's. Or begin exploring a new hex and finishing it up tomorrow.....
It is natural for the strong to overcome the weak. Torod does not stop the killing strokes.
Torod looks over the three wolves for any signs of abnormalities. It is unusual for three wolves to attack so many. Perhaps the alpha wolf was just that aggressive or they were just that hungry.
Knowledge: nature 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Torod would like to find a campsite and continue exploring tomorrow.
Survival 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31 in case the group agrees.
I waited for a third PC to post and vote to stay the night.
Using this idea of “majority rule” I can move the game forward……
Such as using the watch schedule and rolling random encounters.....
Random Encounter rolls
Obi’s watch 1d100 ⇒ 30
Garric’s watch 1d100 ⇒ 78
Torod’s watch 1d100 ⇒ 13
Spoiler:
You catch a glimpse of light in the far distance back towards Oleg's but you only see it once.
Eadric’s watch
Spoiler:
A light in the distance moves at a slow pace the light bobs and weaves as an in individual on horseback making careful headway along the hex….
The rider is nearly 300 feet away and seems to be on the trail of the party, coming in the same way that you did…..
Eadric quietly awakens Garric and alerts him to the approaching light, whispering, Should we wake the others, or wait and see what approaches? Some of the spell casters need their rest... I'm not sure who or what would be tracking us by night and yet need a light source to do so.
If we have a camp fire burning(?) Eadric will snuff it out.
Depending on Garric's response, Eadric will most likely move to his horse and prepare to mount up to meet whatever is approaching.
"Yes, definitely wake the others. Somebody riding through the night, in these woods, is either very deadly or very stupid. We should be prepared for the latter, screw their spells." Garric gets up and picks up his bow and quiver. He checks on Grady to make sure he is well and proceeds to wake any sleeping party members.
Knowledge (nature) as to the light source: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17..is it natural or magical, like a light spell?
I awoke Garric first for a few reasons, not the least of which is he needs the most time to be ready (donning armor) while the rest are ready to act pretty much immediately. If the light turns out to be nothing, we may have interrupted the spell caster's 8 hours rest for naught. Not that I disagree with your assessment or actions. :) Just thought I would elaborate on my thought process. If the light turns out to be Imiria... <shakes fist> ;)
The light is definetly magical as it does not flicker like a fire would in burning. As the rider approaches you notice another smaller four legged creature trotting along beside the horse, you also note the horse is too big for the rider...........
Eadric

Shake fist!

Spoiler:
In the night you can hear a girl's voice....
"Of course goat they went this way and we will find them"
Ellaria shakes her head sleepily. "What's wrong with that girl?", she asks grumpily. "Riding around in the middle of the night... Maybe we should try and understand what's going on with her?"
Obi lights Bellis' holy symbol when he learns it's Imiria, then goes to his horse and quickly saddles it up.
"If we go after the bandits now, we may catch them as the get home. People have no reason to think they're in danger at home. No one expects to wake up breathing in smoke and seeing flames dance about their room."
He slips his horse a sugar cube, taken almost unnoticed from his backpack.
Eadric shakes his head in disbelief as Imiria comes within range.
Upon hearing her report, Eadric forgets his previous concerns and remarks, This is what I have feared from the beginning. Reprisals against the outpost. Obviously we need to return to Oleg's at once!
Upon hearing Imiria's snide remarks to Obi, Eadric interjects in a firm voice, Imiria! That is enough! You are to address Obi and the rest of the Guardians with the respect they deserve! I do not find your remarks at all humorous or acceptable!
If you wish to be treated as an adult then you need to start acting like one.
"Wait a moment, Eadric. This child was told to come report to us by Svetlana. She risked the dangers of the wilds to do so. She did address us with respect, but it seems that at least one of us did not listen to what she was saying. If her response was sarcastic it is because she was treated with less respect than she deserves." Torod places a bit of emphasis on the last two words.
"I won't be going back in the morning. It seems that the soldiers are capable of defending the tradepost in our absence. I know that I do more good out here rooting out bandits than being cooped up inside of those wooden walls."
Hey, after reading the spoiler, I thought all the bandits we had caught had been killed, not the ones still at large. My bad.
When he realizes he heard Imiria's story wrongly, Obi freezes and doesn't move for a few moments, his body tense as if expecting a blow... then he relaxes.
"My apologies, it sounded like.. nevermind."
"We should still go back. The soldiers were only able to fend off the bandits with help from the captives. Now that there are no captives..."
I'm not sure that I am following you Torod. I did not challenge Imira's presence out here, in the dead of night, alone, once the reason she was sent to find us was revealed. Although sending Imiria to fetch us seems an odd choice when soldiers are available for the task. I also appreciate the dangers of the wilds that she risked in finding us, which further reinforces the notion that sending a child to fetch us is questionable judgment. What instance can you point to when Imiria has been treated disrespectfully by myself, or any of the guardians? I don't think that concern for her safety and well being constitutes disrespect.
Eadric interjects in a firm voice, Imiria! That is enough! You are to address Obi and the rest of the Guardians with the respect they deserve! I do not find your remarks at all humorous or acceptable! If you wish to be treated as an adult then you need to start acting like one.
"All she did was to respond to someone's comment. It didn't think her response to Obi required you to respond to her so vehemently. OR at all really."
"Obi, that's what the soldiers are for. They stay there and protect the trade post. We are to explore the land and root out and destroy the bandits and other dangers."
Eadric stares at Torod for a moment and then throws up his hands and stalks off. He takes to his saddle and remarks, I for one am returning to Oleg's. We have sworn to protect the good people of the Greenbelt and they have suffered an attack. There are dead and wounded, including Oleg himself. They obviously seek our assistance or why would they send a child out into wilderness in the middle of the night to fetch us? I am going to fulfill my pledge to the good people at the outpost. Anyone is free to join me, or free to remain. For those that remain, I'm sure if you stick close to Imiria, you should be quite safe...
Dax, you don't think that "little fire man", "sure you are smart enough" and "If I kill you quickly" didn't sound a little disrespectful of Obi? ;) And it was more of a scolding, like a parent to a child, than vehemence. :) (Eadric doesn't like personal slights... but you wouldn't know that of him as you only recently met him. ;)
Now that Obi(more fully) understands what has and is happening, he isn't sure if he should go. One the one hand, it sounds like the danger has passed, but on the other they may need help...
I understood it as a scolding. Torod was trying to take her side. He doesn't think Eadric's method will be effective with her and he's trying his way to get through to her. Torod doesn't bear Eadric any ill feelings.
"I understand your concern, but Oleg knew the dangers when he decided to bring his wife out here and start the trading post. He is tougher than you seemt to give him credit for. In any case, if I am traveling alone will you take Pacer (my horse) with you? I plan to continue in a circle, making my way back to the trading post in a few days. That should give you enough time to make sure all is well there."
head back to Oleg's the travel is slowed somewhat by the darkness, and speeds up one the morning light first comes available.
As you arrive the three soldiers appear to be milling about and following the order of the leader, if you had not been told you would not necessarily have noticed that Ulla is now one of the soldiers carrying on as if he had never been anything else.
You can tell that all of them had been injured in the fighting, but most were nearly healed up. The soldiers have started a graveyard where they are burying 6 bandits wrapped in blankets....
Torod, & Imiria, & (Ellaria?)
The morning comes and still Imiria sleeps she had a late night and finally wakes towards noon......very hungry...goat grazes on grass a few feet away....
Ok. Good. I just wanted to clarify Eadric's tone because in the past when I have used exclamation points it has come across as Eadric screaming at people. Eadric likewise holds no ill feelings... please carry on! :)
"I don't think that we should be gone that long... in fact I would expect to return later today barring unforeseen circumstances. Do you think it wise to dismount? You would be able to avoid danger more aptly upon your mount, no? You couldn't hope to outrun another group of bandits on foot."
"I don't just ride for Oleg. I ride for everyone who stands for good, justice and community. Just because someone recognizes the danger, and puts themselves in harm's way anyways, does not mean that they are expected to do so alone without our assistance, help and compassion. That seems to me like blaming the victim for the crime because they shouldn't have put themselves in harm's way. The outpost is also the only home I have currently. I'm not going to sit idly by while it is attacked and those that live there are killed and injured."
"Hey where is everyone?"
not really pausing for an answer
"I guess I showed those bandits a thing or two, they won't be up to no good like that again for a long time."
"So where are we going today?"
"We don't need those big dorks with swords anyway, yesterday I got three bandits and then the fighters came in an finished them off, but I got them first!"
As daylight comes and everything seems to be in order a man approaches Oleg's
"Well met I am called Jhod Kavken I am a priest of Erastil,
a traveling cleric and hunter."
"I heard of the exploration charter and came to Oleg’s to offer my help."
Torod's group
Spoiler:
as you leave the tree you line a series of rocks pointing in an arrow that you think should tell Garrick at least which way you went.......
As you explore the next hex rather than just smooth land there is a particularly rocky crag rises from the hills here. That you carefully note on the map....
Upon arrival at the fort, Eadric made sure to check in on Kesten to get a report on the attack. Eadric was looking for numbers of bandits, method of attack etc. He then offered Kesten 75gp to help recruit and pay for additional soldiers, promising more coins in the days ahead. Eadric also offers to pay Kesten and the other current soldiers a stipend as thanks for their services. Going by Core rates, that should pay for a number of man-at-arms (10?) for a few weeks (3?).
He offered words of gratitude to Ula for his participation in defending the fort from his former associates, and expressed hope that Ula had indeed turned over a new leaf in his life.
He then made sure to check in with Oleg and Svetlana, asking the same of Oleg that he did of Kesten and offering any healing services needed, in the form of potions, to any of the injured.
In the morning Eadric returns the new arrival's greetings, "And blessed greetings to you Jhod! I am Eadric Cuthwulf, Paladin, Justicar of the Greenbelt and member of the Greenbelt Wardens! Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated! Any news to share would also be welcome indeed! Are you familiar with the area?"
Anyone notice I referred to us as the "Guardians" above instead of Wardens? :)
Eadric will be in a hurry, events withstanding, to return to the Greenbelt and rejoin the rest of the party...
"The bandits attacked trying to take prisoners and catch us unaware they had us outnumbered 2 to 1 not counting Oleg/Svetlana or the girl"
the man shudders
"They managed to catch one of my men with a rope and rocks thrown through the air....One of the others was atop him quick an finished him with a knife."
"They were taken us easy, till tha girl threw a rainbow at them thats what it looked like a rainbow straight out of the sky and shot it into three of em two of them went down jus as easy as my man did."
"The third man did not go down but he recovered to late for them to get the drop on us again."
"The rest o tha fight took awhile an tha girl was up on tha roof callin down curses and cackling in a way tha made mah blood run cold"
The cleric finishes healing up the injured being better at it than Imiria.....
Ellaria would prefer to go with Eadric and check what happened to Oleg. Losing one's base of operations in such a distant land is dangerous, and she feels that the group has to deal with the bandit threat before dealing and exploring further into the greenbelt.
As the small group arrives at Oleg, Ellaria eyes the dead corpses, nodding as she thinks the dead captured bandits have died honorably. If they haven't been buried yet, she'll try to get the other men dig some graves a short distance outside the post.
She then moves towards Ula, saying: "I see you've found your redemption for now. Take care of yourself, and I wish you'll find happiness in the rest of your life".
After he stables his horse and gives all the horse a bit of hay, Obi walks through the camp almost aimlessly, looking for something to do but finding little he can do alone...
So he searches out Ula. When he finds the man, he just smiles weakly for a few moments.
"If it's not official yet.. As a Warden I pronounce you a free man... Never waste freedom Ula, it's far too important..."
Then he hears the new man introduce himself and Eadric's usual loud reply, but decides to stay out of it for now and starts to head for the stables to wait and practice his flute, but stops. Eadric would see him for sure... He sighs as slowly starts to make his way toward the stables.
Stealth:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
Good, good. Now as long as no one notices I'm not around, I should be fine. ;)
A particularly rocky crag rises from the hills here. At
the crag’s base is an overgrown 5-foot-wide crack you soon learn due to Imirias nature that the cave leads down 20 feet to a 30-foot-diameter cave. The cave wall directly across from the entrance sparkles
slightly.....
