Hi folks,

In memory of Dave Arneson I would like to run "Kill Bargle" by Jason Bulmahn from the final issue of Dungeon magazine as a PbP game. For those who haven't read it, it's an update from the adventure found in the Dungeon Master's Rulebook of the D&D Basic Set (the red box edited by Tom Moldvay). It was the first adventure I ever played and it has always had a nostalgically warm place in my heart.

I've updated it for the Pathfinder Beta RPG and set it in Golarion, and will also be using some of the changes suggestion by Mr. Cook in his Book of Experimental Might. Characters will begin at third level. I will post full character creation rules if I find there's a significant interest in the game.

I tried running this game on the ENWorld boards, but eventually everyone (including myself) ran out of steam. I would like to give it another try.

I am looking for four to six interested players who are willing to post on a regular basis. Please post your character ideas in this thread. If I get more than 6 positive responses, I will choose a group based on best integration with the storyline and party balance.

Here's the character background:

Two years ago your party was hired by a graduate of the Acadamae named Bargle to recover an ancient Thassilonian tome from a dungeon in the Mushfens. You ended up recovering the book but as you emerged from the swamp, you were ambushed by Bargle and his faceless stalker minions. Although you defeated his ensorcelled hirelings, Bargle was able to kill your friend Aleena before escaping with the tome. Greatly saddened by the death of your beloved priest of Sarenrae, you all swore revenge.

You have been on the evil wizard's heels ever since, almost catching him after a chaotic chase through the slave bazaar of Kaer Maga 18 months ago. In the last year the scent of his trail has become very cold, and you were beginning to wonder if you would ever find Bargle again. Luckily one of you received a tip from an old friend a few weeks ago. He told you that Bargle has relocated to an abandoned manor near the town of Baslwief. Newly invigorated by news of your prey, you now descend upon the ruined mansion of Mistamere, hard against the Fenwall mountains.

Ooh! Ooh! pick me!

I have this issue and actually remember the red basic book which also dealt with that character.
What level are the characters?
Have a spare 3rd level ranger available from a game that didn't get very far but last thing I remember about that issue wasn't the characters 7th level?

(Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

Nope, 3rd level.

Rhade looks good for now. I'll deal with specific changes to PCs in the seperate OOC thread once we get that far (hopefully). Thanks for your interest!

How about a paladin of Iomedae and former lover of the late cleric. May be headed for a fall if he travels too far down the dark path he's headed down.

I like the angle, I'm a big fan of conflicted PCs :)

Hrm...this okay?

CN Semi-reformed ruffian that Aleena pulled from a CE life of crime but didn't quite make it to CG sound okay? Was really fond of the girl, owed her a debt for saving his life, and really wants to see the sumb@#$% that killed her put six feet underground? Guy really has tried to turn his life around, but never quite made it all the way, and he blames Aleena's killer for a good portion of that. Most likely rogue, but could easily go for fighter or even barbarian.

Of course that would depend on how lenient you are with paladin codes, since that could be unfair for the paladin.

I think I have a pretty standard reading of the paladin code, which tends to be pretty strict.

Since two other people have already said they would like to play fighter types, you would increase your chances of being picked (if we get more than 6 applicants) if you picked a predominantly non-fighter class. Of course since we'd be starting at 3rd level multiclassing is an option as well.

How about a half-elf sorceror/elemental bloodline, bit of a princess, who takes the cleric's death as a personal affront since she's always considered her personal talents more than equal to any enemy?

Alternatively, an all-business human rogue, specializing in stealth and sneak attack, whose only and all-consuming loyalty is to the group?

Sorry should have mentioned that the items Rhade is carrying came from previous missions into the Mushfens and was hired as a guide by the party, Aleena saved Rhade's life in that ambush and Rhade witnessed her death at Bargle's hands making it personal as far as he was concerned not because Bargle didn't pay off the party he was hired by but because he wasn't able to repay the karmic debt he felt he owed Aleena, well that and the fact he didn't care for being ambushed... the others probably see Rhade as a mercenary who stuck around so he could get paid once they caught up with Bargle... but I do assume there's a bounty on Bargle in any case?

You have been on the evil wizard's heels ever since, almost catching him after a chaotic chase through the slave bazaar of Kaer Maga 18 months ago. You do realise Rhade may have to change his favoured enemy to human?

That might need clarification though after all a Paladin in the party might make that a problem since Rhade is neither human nor evil...

Does the "friend" want a cut on Bargle's head by the way?

DM:
Rhade is actually more concerned with the getting even part than any bounty on Bargle, but it would explain how they were able to track him down after all the Bargle in the original d&d became the wizard to a black knight who when he was toppled by his brother Stefan the king of karameikos Bargle betrayed the black knight so killing Aleena is the least he was responsible for... but this is golarion so who knows... is he chelish by the way? Bargle I mean?

Given these two choices I would probably prefer the former, only because we don't have an arcanist in the group as of this moment.

Did she hire Bargle to find a long lost tome that he subsequently fled with and she wants it back?

Then again if there's a bounty on Bargle there's nothing to say your character is a bountyhunter...

Still the magi part may be more useful but are we talking the sorceror bit and Rhade is a half elf too by the way...

Not a discouragement just another introduction of sorts...

Rhade wrote:

There is in fact no bounty on Bargle's head, as his crime was committed outside of the jurisdiction (the Mushfens) of either Korvosa or Magnimar. It's pretty much just personal for all of you.

Rhade wrote:

That's fine, character creation still being in progress.

(Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, Adventure Path, Campaign Setting, Companion, Modules Subscriber)

Okay, so far we have the following interested parties:

  • hopeless playing a half-elven ranger
  • Mark Thomas playing a paladin
  • Mikaze playing a semi-reformed ruffian of indeterminate class
  • Joana with either a sorcerer or a rogue

I will keep the recruitment open for at least another 24 hours, so if people have any further ideas, please feel free to post them here.

Best,

I'll put forth a halfing wizard, since it seems like you need you some arcane goodness.

Ignacious Throckmorton the Third, Iggie to his friends, is a great lover of comfort and home, but his truest love is money. Gold, platinum, silver: if it can spend, it can buy him what he wants.

He wants Bargle dead for two reasons: One, no one takes what is rightfully Iggie's and lives; Two, Aleena owed Iggie money and now she'll never be able to pay him back. For this, Bargle must pay.

"The fact Bargle didn't pay for that book he stole... and the fact in the process also stole what else you had in that sack with the book... yes I can thoroughly understand why you want Bargle dead..." Rhade nods back.

"So do I call you Third or Igneous?" Rhade asks.

"You may call me anything you wish, good sir, but call it a few feet back. You reek of the forest and are in need of a bath. My delicate constitution cannot abide such smells. I am a pale desert flower and am not inured to these dusty campfire situations. Are we perhaps near any sort of civilization where one might find a bath and a relaxing meal?"

Alternately, Iggie can become a cleric if need be. I just like the idea of playing a stuffy Abadarian...

"Funny enough there's a gentleman back there looking for escorts to just such a place if you're interested," Rhade nods over to the patron in question.

Thanks for your interest, Mr. Thomas, but this is just a thread to see who might want to play. We'll handle the details of character creation and other crunchy campaign specifics in the "Play-by-Post Discussion" thread once we get going.

Any idea what you might like to play?

I hate to do this, but work threw me a fastball today. I might be able to keep up with a game but there's more than a fair chance that I won't be able to. I'd recommend bumping me off as soon as a seventh player expresses interest, since it wouldn't be fair to the others to be saddled with Mr. "I Don't Even Know If I'm Gonna Be Here Next Week" Guy.

Speaking of, you might want to give recruitment a bit more time. Sundays and Mondays tend to be pretty slow, especially coming off of a vacation. You should likely see more people piping in with interest in the game tomorrow, man.

Whatever happens, sounds like this game is going to be a hoot, and by that I mean a rip-roaring rampage of revenge. ;)

Thanks for the advice and honesty, Mikaze. I'll keep recruitment open a few more days to see if there are any more takers. In the meantime, I have started an OOC thread for this game HERE, so anyone who has already expressed interested can wander over there and take a gander.

Do you have room for anymore? I'd be interested in playing a cleric, perhapse Aleena's father who has joined the others in thier quest to see Bargle dead.

My first adventures were the redbox also and it would be fun to get all nestolgic and all.

Yep, there's still room and I like the idea about Aleena's father. No one has volunteered to play a cleric, so feel free to head over to the OOC thread and take a look-see at the character creation stuff.

Well, it looks like there won't be any more takers right now. Since we have five definites, I say we just get things going. If one more person wants to join later, that's fine too.

I will start reviewing stats over in the OOC THREAD and then we can begin!

Damn it failed my Will Save.
If there's a spot still open then Bargle has a warm place in my heart as well as the first D&D game I ever played.
For nostalgia's sake!!!
