The Knights stare at Astraden's symbol.
"A young god," Barnos whispers.
"Weak and foolish," says Kardic.
"Armadillo," hisses Marka, "spelled backwards."
Cuetzpalli |
Cuetzpalli rages, sprouting his wings. He flies into the room, going for the knight with the bow. "HI!" he greets the creature as he swings at it with Kelmarchen.
Kelmarchen (AS, BR, PA, RA): 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (1) + 29 = 302d6 + 34 ⇒ (2, 2) + 34 = 382d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 (-4 AC)
Cuetzpalli proves far too eager, overswinging by a mile.
Eben MacTeague |
"Okay, I kinda like Marka. Can we keep that one alive? Maybe just keep its head in a box to be friends with my dragon."
Dungeon Kobold |
"I think you're getting ahead of yourself," Marka says.
Barnos watches calmly as Cuetzpalli cleaves empty air. He then steps back and attempts to sink four arrows into the bloodrager of Kord.
Manyshot/Arrow/Arrow: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (18) + 20 = 381d20 + 20 ⇒ (2) + 20 = 221d20 + 17 ⇒ (12) + 17 = 29
Three Hits?: 2d8 + 18 + 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 18 + (5, 2) = 351d8 + 9 + 2d6 ⇒ (7) + 9 + (2, 2) = 201d8 + 9 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 9 + (5, 5) = 23 Cuetzpalli takes 28 damage from the first (plus 7 unholy damage), 16 damage from the second (plus 4 unholy damage), and 13 damage from the third (plus 10 unholy damage). Total: 78 damage.
As the arrows slam into Cuetzpalli's gut, he feels a force of pure evil ripping into his stomach, making bad wounds even worse. Then Barnos raises his hand to point at Cuetzpalli, and a spark of dark energy flies towards the warrior's head.
Make a Will save.
Three soldiers clad in plate armor run through a young jungle, pursued by a brilliant light. One wields a bow, another a mace, and the third a rapier. The archer—Barnos, Cuetzpalli realizes, but in life—stops running and turns to the others. He is cradling something in his arms, but what it is is obscured by shadows.
"We'll never outrun them," the man growls. "We must get the Harbinger's package to the ziggurat." He hands the shadowy object to Marka.
"What will you do?" the club-wielder—Kardic—asks.
"I will earn the gifts Kyuss has promised us." Barnos holds his head high. "I'll hold them up here."
Kardic nods solemnly. Marka nods, too, as she takes the object. "They're pretty heavy," she says. "You'll have to be really strong."
"For f*@*'s sake, Marka."

Round 1: Farrukh and Tanith are up!
Carina Viera |
KC, I think Cuetzpalli cast mirror image on himself before the fight started, didn't he?
Dungeon Kobold |
Oh, right. There I go again. I'm starting to think we need to start an "Error Jar" where I give you guys an Action Point every time I forget someone's invisible or mirrored. :P
1d6 ⇒ 51d5 ⇒ 11d5 ⇒ 4
So, if a 22 hits, Cuetzpalli takes 20 damage, 4 of which unholy. He loses two images.
Astraden Limhaare |
"Uh, that'd be OllidamRA. It'd be like calling you 'Makara.' Doesn't work," Astraden replies to Marka.
Farrukh Al-Khatel |
Farrukh decides Barnos the Bowman is the most annoying threat, and tactically rushes at him.
Swift action, move up to my speed. If this provokes, so be it. Assuming my movement is not somehow arrested, I full attack.
Slash: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 16 + 2 = 23

Damage: 1d6 + 16 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 16 + (5) = 27
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith steps into the place of the pouncing Farrukh. With a quick gesture he calls one of Kord's servitors to aid Cuetzpalli.
Summon a lantern archon as a swift. Aid on Cuetz.
Temps: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
You also get a +1 morale bonus to attacks if you don't already have a better morale bonus from elsewhere.
Eben MacTeague |
"Actually..." Eben says in his snottiest possible 'educated' voice, "In proper old Flan, the word for 'armadillo' spelled backwards does, in fact, make out the words 'laughing divine thief', assuming you're using the second declension form of 'thief'. The terms are actually used in a well-known Flanese palindrome."
"Or I could just be making that up. But prove me wrong!"
Dungeon Kobold |
As Farrukh runs around Barnos Indarna, one of the huge worms that fill his eye sockets shoots out to bite at the warder. Farrukh deflects it with his shield, though, and he manages a shallow gash through Barnos's leg.
Bite: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Round 1: Marka
"Makara's a nice name," says the Kyuss Knight with a shrug, "but I think my old one has already left its 'mark-an' the world." She springs forward, stabbing for Astraden's throat, before springing backwards onto the couch.

Greatclub: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (20) + 24 = 44 1d4 ⇒ 3 Aww. Another image is smashed.

Eben MacTeague |
"Hey, those are a couple of really good points you raise..." Eben says to Marka, "But I think you might have reached your conclusions a bit hastily." He takes a few steps forward into the room, then presses a button on his rod of quickening, laying a blanket of speed upon most of the group.
I don't think I can hit both Farrukh and Tanith/Carina, so since Farrukh can haste himself when needed, I'll leave him high and dry for the time being.
Then, being within smacking distance of a number of potent Kyuss servants, he does some more conventional spellcasting and splits into 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 innocent faced Ebens.
Casting quickened haste as a swift action, moving 15 feet into the room, casting mirror image as a standard action.
Haste lasts 11 rounds, mirror image lasts 110 rounds, aspect of the falcon lasts 8 rounds, cat's grace lasts 59 rounds, eagle's splendor lasts 58 rounds, weaponwand lasts 57 rounds, good hope lasts 56 rounds, moment of greatness lasts 55 rounds.
AC is 28/21/21 while haste (+1 dodge) and Farrukh's aegis (+3 morale) are active. Mirror image has 6 images remaining.
Astraden Limhaare |
"Great minds think alike, Eben. And two -" Astraden says as her doubles raise their masks to their faces, releasing a burst of tangible laughter that shreds into the Kyuss Knights. "- Heads think better than one." She steps forward and releases the second burst of energy, grinning as she lowers the mask and looks at Marka.
Positive energy (harming): 8d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5, 5, 2, 4, 6, 1) = 26 DC 23 to halve. [5/7]
Positive energy (harming): 8d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 3, 1, 6, 2, 4) = 26 DC 23 to halve. [3/7]
"Am I doing the aphorism thing right?"
Round 2: Five-foot step (no action), channel positive energy (standard action), and channel positive energy with Quick Channel (move action). [i]Communal endure elements lasts 2344 rounds on all of us, magic circle against evil lasts 1145 rounds on Farrukh, magic circle against law lasts 1146 rounds on Astraden, communal air walk lasts 188 rounds on all of us minus Carina, shield of faith lasts 78 rounds on Carina, 79 rounds on Astraden, 80 rounds on Cuetzpalli, and 81 rounds on Farrukh, bear's endurance lasts 82 rounds on Tanith, owl's wisdom lasts 83 rounds on Astraden, death ward lasts 84 rounds on Astraden, 85 rounds on Cuetzpalli, 86 rounds on Eben, and 87 rounds on Farrukh, and copycat lasts 7 rounds on Astraden.
e: Oof, I forgot about Farrukh's aegis. So that 27 from Marka was actually a miss. Fixed my AC now.

Will Saves: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 361d20 + 21 ⇒ (16) + 21 = 371d20 + 21 ⇒ (7) + 21 = 281d20 + 21 ⇒ (9) + 21 = 301d20 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 271d20 + 21 ⇒ (4) + 21 = 25
Astraden's channeled energy tears into the knights' spiritual presence, but they show no signs of fear. "Two heads just get to be wrong twice as often," Marka says. "Which one told you to come down here? We'll crack that one open first, as a favor."
Cuetzpalli is (possibly) up!
Eben MacTeague |
Eben brightens. "You really mean that? Because it was the Harbinger that sent us this way! So if you guys could just go crack his skull open, that'd be great."
Dungeon Kobold |
"Hm. Interesting idea, but no thanks. I'm pretty sure the Harbinger's skull still has more going on inside it than yours. Besides, I'm sort of set on throwing you into the Sea and waiting to see what comes out now."
Astraden Limhaare |
"Is that where you crawled out of? Gotta say, thinking of you as fresh-spawned newts crawling out of a pond makes you considerably less intimidating."
Eben MacTeague |
Eben looks disappointed. "Guys, we were having a perfectly good pun fight and now you're just trash-talking."
Cuetzpalli |
Make a Will save.
Will save (AP, GH): 1d20 + 12 + 2 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 12 + 2 + (1, 2) = 21
Cuetzpalli is stunned for one round
Cuetzpalli |
Oh, right. There I go again. I'm starting to think we need to start an "Error Jar" where I give you guys an Action Point every time I forget someone's invisible or mirrored. :P
1d6;1d5;1d5
So, if a 22 hits, Cuetzpalli takes 20 damage, 4 of which unholy. He loses two images.
A 22 misses. Updating stat bar thingy with current buffed AC in a second.
Dungeon Kobold |
Note: Hadn't fully converted the Knights last round, so the numbers have, in some areas, changed. Notably, attacks are higher now.
Round 2: Barnos Indarna
"Eben is right," Marka says. "This may-ggot out of hand."
"You need to stop," Barnos Indarna says, stepping back to stand right in front of the stunned Cuetzpalli. He looks between his targets, eyes appearing to linger a bit overlong on Marka, then looses four arrows towards the bloodrager of Kord. Additionally, he releases another wisp of shadow, this time towards Farrukh.
Farrukh, make a Will save.
Two soldiers clad in plate armor crouch in a dark, dense jungle, observing a large marble edifice. One wields a bow, the other a mace. The archer—Barnos, Farrukh realizes, but not skeletal yet—looks strangely gaunt, and his eyes glimmer with a bright red glow. "Do you think she'll get it back?" he asks. His voice carries the hollow ringing of undeath.
"Take them a while to destroy it." Kardic shrugs. "Maybe she can get it before they finish. Not before being spotted."
"You know what the Harbinger will do if we fail. We already lost it once."
"Kyuss will reward us if we succeed," says Kardic confidently. "Just as he rewarded you."
Just then, there is a blast of fire. A woman wielding a rapier is sent flying out of the building, a mass of pulsating darkness clutched in her arms. Kardic and Barnos run forward and pick her and the object up.
"It's damaged!" Barnos hisses.
"So is she," Kardic says, looking down at the corpse of Marka. "Let's move."
Target?: 1d2 ⇒ 2
Longbow: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (1) + 27 = 281d20 + 27 ⇒ (19) + 27 = 461d20 + 22 ⇒ (9) + 22 = 31 Mirrors: 1d3 ⇒ 31d2 ⇒ 1 Damage: 1d8 + 9 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 9 + (1, 6) = 21 Cuetzpalli takes 21 damage, 7 of which unholy.
Another one of Cuetzpalli's images is destroyed, but the last arrow hits Cuetzpalli directly. Marka glances over as two arrows whizz past her, both narrow misses. "Hey, it's a bit late to be switching sides, Barmos Blindarna!"
Round 2: Farrukh and Tanith are up!
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith's hand fills with glowing light and he reaches for Eben's bow.
Holy Strike on Eben's weapon. It's good aligned and deals 1d6 extra damage to evil creatures.

Round 2: Marka
Marka jumps down from the couch and stabs at Eben, the worms inhabiting her eye sockets lunging out to bite his neck and shoulder.

Crits?: 1d20 + 29 ⇒ (18) + 29 = 471d20 + 24 ⇒ (17) + 24 = 41 Got any tricks to get out of this one, Eben? If not:
Damage: 2d6 + 14 ⇒ (6, 5) + 14 = 251d6 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 122d4 + 14 ⇒ (3, 2) + 14 = 191d4 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9 If a 28 misses, Eben takes 53 damage. Otherwise, he takes 65.
Int Drain: 3d4 ⇒ (4, 4, 1) = 92d4 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 Eben takes 12 Intelligence drain.
Greater Dispel: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (10) + 16 = 26 Four spells affecting Eben are dispelled, from highest CL to lowest. Not super likely to matter, though.
Marka stabs Eben twice in the side, and there is a flash of white light as enchantments affecting him are torn asunder. But the pain from that pales in comparison to the sensation as both worms latch on. Eben feels a strange dimming sense, as if the world around him is getting ... slower. Marka's eyes glimmer with brilliant light as she seems to feed. She hisses something in Eben's ear as consciousness starts to flicker away from his weakening mind.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
12 int drain, no save?! I don't suppose death ward helps here?
Dungeon Kobold |
Unfortunately, no. And yeah, Marka was basically the last Knight you wanted to crit with one of those worms. The rest only roll 1d4 each.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
That's nuts. I suppose this means no more adventuring without sheltered vitality for the entire party.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
5d4 int drain (no save) is a valid reason to be paranoid!
Farrukh's just about our only shot at fighting these guys. Go Path of War! Go!

Got any tricks to get out of this one, Eben? If not:
:::looks up my sleeve::: Oh, hey, it's a mirror image. :::looks up my other sleeve::: By golly, it's another image? Hey, wait... :::looks up four more sleeves::: OK, I'm freaking out, because I have six mirror images but that also means I HAVE SIX SLEEVES. Am I a marilith? A spellweaver? DEAR GOD WHAT AM I?
Jesting aside, I get the impressions the dispels work when she makes contact in melee? So my images should be still functional? If so:
rapier: 1d7 ⇒ 4
One image deflates with a blaatting sound.
rapier: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Another opens its mouth in horror before turning into a bunch of soap bubbles.
scary crit eyeworm: 1d5 ⇒ 4
As Marka's eyeworm grabs Eben's image by the neck, it seems to dissolve into a white, runny, cheeselike substance and gets sucked up into the worm's maw like a particularly gross fondue.
rapier: 1d4 ⇒ 4
And the last image goes "BOO!" before simply vanishing.
"Sorry, Marka, that last one was unworthy of our caliber of humor, I know, but you missed so many times, I just ran out of creative responses."
Mirror image has two images remaining.
Dungeon Kobold |
Dang. I did check for that, but it looks like I was looking at the wrong source.
"You're running out of a lot of things, Eben, but creative responses is not one of them. Can't run out of something you don't have."

Round 2: Kardic
Kardic leaps behind Cuetzpalli to stand alongside Marka. "Please stop," the Kyuss Knight hisses, as he raises his clay mace again to strike at the bloodrager. On the second swing, his mace dissolves into shadow once again, again bypassing Cuetzpalli's armor.

Int Drain: 1d4 ⇒ 21d4 ⇒ 4 If the worm attacks hit, Cuetzpalli takes 26 damage, and 6 Int drain.
The last of Cuetzpalli's mirror images are shattered as a pair of eyeworms bite into his shoulder. The world around him seems to get ... slower.
"You were fools to come here," Kardic rasps. His eyes glimmer as he seems to feed off of the draining effect on Cuetzpalli. "We were his chosen, we four. Three, now. You cannot beat us. We are destined to stand by His side when the Age comes. Give up. It is ... easier to give up. It will hurt less."
Round 2-3: Eben is up, then Astraden and Cuetzpalli.
Eben MacTeague |
"Mirror nuisance? That's a good one!" Eben takes a step back, laughing. "Marka, you crack me up." He activates his rod again, and the two remaining Eben-images splinter down the middle, like a shattered mirror, before splitting apart into 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 fresh new images.
"But here's the thing..." he says, dropping the rod and holding his hand out in the air. "To me, Forzi. Shock and awe." His bow levitates out of his quiver and soars into his open palm, Forzamele activating his bit of celestial magic as it does so. "Astraden and I are protected by a really minor bit of magic. We aren't talking about uber-archmagey levels of protection, it's something every two bit spellcaster can pick up. Like, y'know, me. And it still made everything you've done so far completely inconsequential." He reaches back and nocks a pair of arrows into the bow. "So... I hate to ask it, but are you sure they do call you Mageslayer? Not 'Mage's Layer'? As in, 'Marka went after some halfwit apprentice today, and he just totally f+~@ed her with no problem?'"
He smiles, and all the rest is arrows.
Using silver arrows, with Tanith's blessing on me they also count as good-aligned.
Actually, using 2 silver and 2 mithral arrows, after which I think I'm out of silvery things.

Yes, just spent a lengthy edit adding in 'Tanith's thingy'.

Eben's arrows rip through Marka's armor, and she drops to a knee. She continues to hiss. "I just want to dispel the notion that you know what you're doing. You have no idea what you're doing." Kardic leaps behind Cuetzpalli to stand alongside Marka. "Please stop," the Kyuss Knight hisses, as he raises his clay mace again to strike at the bloodrager. On the second swing, his mace dissolves into shadow once again, again bypassing Cuetzpalli's armor.

[dice=Int Drain]1d4;1d4 If the worm attacks hit, Cuetzpalli takes 26 damage, and 6 Int drain.
I only have one image left when Kardic attacks me. So, what happens?
Dungeon Kobold |
In that case, the second attack hits.
Damage: 1d8 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22 Cuetzpalli takes 22 tainted damage. Cursed damage requires a caster level check to successfully healed. I've added it to the map to keep track of it.
As the mace strikes Cuetzpalli, he feels the soft, wet clay mash into him. Something about the wound stings more than normal, and as Kardic pulls back, Cuetzpalli can see a strange dark green mark against the wound.
Astraden Limhaare |
Posting draft now to note that I am going to spend an AP for Escape Route so 2-Int Cuetzpalli can move out of range of being ganged up on by 3 knights. [8/11]
"Ah, s+*~, I just remembered I used up my scroll on Zolin." Astraden winces, then chants, "Tinīharūlā'ī antargata dēkhi bāhira āphnō dhana-sampattilē hiṇḍna." Preparing to let the spell drop should Marka come too close with her rapier, she makes the necessary gestures. She calls, "ARISE."
Concentration (owl's wisdom): 1d20 + 16 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 16 + 1 = 18
Nothing happens.
Thinking quickly, she points behind Marka, saying, "Behold - your fourth member, here to drag you back to Death!" She then steps forward and gestures to Cuetzpalli to run behind her. And also releases a harming burst because she does not see why not.
Channel positive energy (harming): 8d6 ⇒ (3, 1, 5, 1, 3, 3, 1, 6) = 23 [1/7] DC 23 Will to halve
