Carina shrugs her shoulders. "Wonder what THAT was all about... we'll probably be okay in any case."

She looks over at Astraden and wanders over to her. "Are you feeling okay, Astraden?" She looks down at the loot in front of her.

"Heh . . . we mighta misidentified something. I wonder if he's got any scars."

Maybe those twitching chains?

When Carina approaches her after preparations, Astraden shrugs. "Bit hungry, I guess. Even after supper. That wraith really sucked something out of me."

"Haven't figured out much about that stuff. There's a strong aura on the hand and the Zahol-y symbol is worth like ten platinum. We might be able to find a buyer in a museum or something - this cult is old."

Once she's finished talking to the undine, Astraden heads over to the infirmary and checks to see if Joren's awake. "How's it going, friend?"

I am finished with my preparations for tonight. If you want to advance the clock we could just push Astraden's and Tanith's conversations forward to tomorrow morning

Joren is sitting up in his bed, chin resting in his hands. He doesn't look up. "Asterdan, isn't it? You won the match, I hear. I suppose victory comes easy when you're willing to betray your allies to get it."

She stares at the top of his head and lowers her voice. "It was unfortunate that we ended up on opposite sides so quickly."

Remembered one more thing I wanted to do.

After speaking with Joren, Asterdan returns to her group's room and pulls out a scroll that's gone blank since she used it to heal Rodrigo. She casts around for a writing implement, then gives up and asks Carina. "I'm going to write Eligos a letter."

Carina could probably make up some invisible ink overnight but she's going to need sleep. Astraden's letter, written in Abyssal, relays that we've found the Apostolic Scrolls and tells everything Astraden could glean from the text. It also includes as much as she can remember of her visions upon touching the scroll. At the end, she asks him to try and scry on Robin, sending aid if he's in trouble, and to come to the final game prepared to help save the city. I'm not going to write it all out because I've already kinda done that explaining it to the party.

"Yeah." Joren sighs. "Y'know, I came here because I wanted to make Raknian pay. Every year beasts get slaughtered here. Scores of noble animals get mowed down by gladiators, or sent in to fight each other, for the entertainment of this f$*%ing city. If I'd been able to kill Auric, I could've cost Raknian some money and fame. Instead I just added another body to the pile. I raised Scriminadura from a kit. He'd been in more than he ought've—I should've left him home. Beasts ain't cut out for killing an' betraying like us." His head bows. "They break too easy. Took me too long t'see it."

Astraden keeps her voice quiet, now leaning down towards Joren's ear, as she responds. "Perhaps you've seen Raknian's true face most clearly. He seeks to raise an ancient horror and end our city in a tide of undeath. Tanith Kordson might tell you otherwise, but the real reason we joined the games was to find out what that a$&$**#'s been scheming, and kill him if necessary. Which it is."

She stands up and stretches her back. "I'm sorry about your badger. Would've stabilized him if I could, but he was too tough." She smiles, but her eyes water a bit. "You were even tougher. I've still got no idea how you survived Miskiota's treachery."

Tanith considers Eben's suggestion.

"I can talk to Auric and I trust him but I don't trust his wizard buddy. Khellek's one of those honorless types. He's rat us out in a heartbeat if it'd give him an edge."

Joren blinks. He seems to have absolutely no idea how to interpret this. Eventually, he shrugs. "Aristocrats."

So is someone gonna go talk to Auric and Khellek, or will you be saving that for tomorrow? If you don't want to do the conversation now, we should move along to the next day.

Oh, sorry. I was expecting some kind of intro. Also, Tanith doesn't plan on bluffing. If this is going to be a bluff check, Eben should definitely do it.

"Auric may trust me but tale-spinning is your thing Eben. You should give it a shot... after you clean up."

Why's that? Does Mouseguard have some mechanic for characters that are doing stuff that they're wildly ill prepared for?

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

Yep. Basically, if a PC volunteers for something that makes sense for him to do in-character, he can't then back out when he finds out what skills are getting used.

The fear of failure's a bit too strong for such a rule to work in Pathfinder, sadly. It's not a slight on the players. Just how the game works.

Well the stakes are pretty high in this case - elimination from the Games which would make foiling Raknian's machinations much more complicated. If this was just a fun RP interaction I'd go for it.

Just seeing through a Bluff check isn't proof enough to get you kicked out. Anyway, we'll wait for someone with a good Bluff skill to come online.

Eben stares at Tanith. "Yeah, but the point was that Auric would trust you more than... oh, nevermind." He sighs in resignation. He's not a jerk, he just has the brains of a rodent. I have to work on keeping that in mind. "Okay. You just come along and back me up then. Nod occasionally. And don't... correct me or anything if all of a sudden you feel like I'm stepping on your honor..."

After washing up, he collects Tanith again and heads off to find Auric & Khellek. "Hey, guys, can we have a quick word?" he says upon tracking the two down in whatever part of the coenoby they've claimed as their own.

Auric and Khellek eye Eben warily. Khellek clears his throat. "If we must, I suppose. Robin, isn't it?"

Khellek and Auric exchange looks.

"Oh." Auric laughs, the puzzlement fading from his eyes. "You know, I bet it's that one troll. The hunter one."

"Yes, of course." Khellek rolls his eyes. "Well, whoever we get tomorrow shouldn't be too much trouble. Not much of a stock this year. I'll prepare some of Melf's and that should settle it."

"Tirra's gonna be mad she missed this."

"I'm sure she'll be heartbroken. Just lucky someone spotted the thing—be a pain fighting it unprepared. Very clumsy of it to be seen before—you'd think something clever enough to make it down here would be smarter about that." Khellek glances askance at Eben, his head cocked to one side. A thought seems to be occurring to him.

He peers at Eben a moment longer before giving a shrug. "Well, thanks for the tip. Best of luck tomorrow, or whatever."

I feel a great disturbance in the force, like a cover story suddenly crying out in terror and then silenced...

Eben bites his tongue to keep from adding unnecessary details about how and why the troll just happened to pop up and talk to them in the coenoby. But I had it covered! I can't just waste that, can I? But Khellek's just letting the details slide is a gift that no con man worth the name would pass up, so Eben lets it go. He nods at the departing duo, then says to Tanith, "See? Not even any storytelling needed." His voice is chipper at that, but his face is downcast. "It was gonna be a really good story, too..."

27th of Flocktime

The morning air is slightly frostier than it was two days ago (figuratively speaking—the Coenoby is far too far down to notice actual weather shifts). Everyone appears on edge, clearly aware that in a matter of hours some in the chambers may be dead and many will be gone. Last night's mysterious deaths aren't helping the mood.

"Everyone," Palemon is saying as the last few members of Spiny's Six are exiting their rooms, "I understand that the recent unexplained, highly mysterious fatalities have put everyone in states ranging from mind-numbed terror to an entirely testosterone-fueled drive to track down those responsible and brutally eliminate them. This established, department from the Coenoby remains restricted. If any more guards or gladiators are killed by the strange ghostly entity that supposedly is responsible for two deaths—deaths which, I might add, have utterly thwarted efforts of one of the few clerics we've been able to call in to communicate with the dead victims, indicating some sort of haunting, contagious spirit picking off living entities within the arena one-by-one—further measures may be taken. Failing this, events will continue as per usual. Which is to say..." He unfurls a scroll and hands it to to wardens, who proceed to nail it into the stone wall. "...The match-ups for Face-Off have been selected. Good 'luck'."

Neither will anyone else but Tanith, but that's neither here nor there.

I've already picked all my spells, Tanith. Gotta be a bit quicker on the draw!

"Bows and stuff are gonna be good, too, if you can stay out of reach. I'm probably gonna keep my rapier sheathed, focus on keeping you guys safe. With any luck this fight won't take too long and I won't run out of spells and stuff."

I think so. Were we able to get in touch with our manager and get that message out before the match?

Ekaym hasn't shown up yet. He'll probably arrive after the fight.

Spoiler:
Boulders: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 111d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 91d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 121d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Varmint Patrol: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 241d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 71d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 121d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

The Boulders and Varmint Patrol head up. Some time later, the members of Varmint Patrol return, along with one dwarf who seems to have gotten a tiny arrow stuck in his head and requires medical attention. The rangers of the Patrol head to their rooms to receive healing from their manager.

A few hours later, Spiny's Six and Pitch Blade head up. As they approach the elevator, those in Spiny's Six see that he dwarves are having a conversation with their manager. Captain Okoral is speaking to them in a gutteral, clicking tongue. One of them—Drusfan, maybe—snaps something at him, earning an irritable retort that seems to leave the dwarf (and his two brothers) quite shaken.

Dwarven:
"Remember—do not underestimate them. Use your potions and cut them down. You'd best not fail me. I have a lot riding on this fight."

"So do we, Captain. Calm down. We want that belt back, too."

"Shut your idiot mouth, Drusfan. We want them out of the Games, understand? And they don't have to be alive. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Drusfan sounds unhappy, but he acquiesces. "Never been a holdup before."

The two groups ascend in the elevator. One of the dwarves is carrying a large metal chest strapped to his back. He doesn't say anything if asked about its contents.

The gladiators exit the elevator into the almost blinding light of day. It takes them a moment to adjust to the sudden influx of light and noise before they see the crowd cheering.

"Introducing..." booms a magically-enhanced voice throughout the stadium, ...the ragtag team that drove the bookies absolutely mad, the warriors who knocked Arcane Auriga from one end of the stadium to the other, SPINY'S SIX!"

Rabid applause greets the introduction. Spiny's Six has certainly gotten a lot more popular than it was two days ago.

"And opposing them...the black-hearted brothers of steel and tar, the archnemeses of Auric's Warband, the team that held onto the title for three solid years, PITCH BLADE!"

This applause seems slightly louder, though a not insignificant number of "boos" can be heard amid the cheering. The brothers raise their arms together, calmly receiving the adoration of thousands.

As they wait for the introductions and applause to finish so the match can begin, the members of Pitch Blade begin guzzling potions. One of them also gets out the box and unlocks it, though he doesn't open it immediately.

As is the case for all matches, you have two minutes to prepare. Begin listing buffs.

Farrukh starts with his bow out (unless someone makes him invisible), and intensely studies the dwarf with the metal chest, and one of the others.

Ironskin, resist energy (fire), extended divine favor, and bless weapon on Tanith's fists.

Tanith prepares and then levels his bardiche at the dwarves.

There's quite a few potions in the party fund that folks are welcome to. Just mention if you're going to drink any so I can mark them off.

Up for Grabs:
potion of cats grace x3
potion of see invis x3
potion of barkskin x1
potion of bears endurance x1

I'll snag a Cat's Grace and a See Invis. Didn't even realize we had all those potions.
