With that, he decides a slight change of location is in order. He sneaks around closer toward Tanith, staying behind the wall the whole time.

Hearing Farrukh's warning, Tanith backs up a pace and raises his polearm defensively.

Around the corner lumbers a dark shadow.

An amalgam of fur and feathers, this looming monstrosity stalks towards Tanith on huge, ursine paws. Talon-like claws click-clack on the old wooden floorboards as it advances.

Farrukh sees the creature. It doesn't see him. Yet. It half-growls, half-shrieks growls at Tanith.

Everybody else, including Cuetzpalli, hears this peculiar shrieking sound. Something is wrong.

The owlbear moves up. Tanith and Farrukh are up. This is a SURPRISE ROUND, so only Tanith and Farrukh may act.

Knowledge (nature) DC 14:
This is an owlbear, an utterly savage representation of nature's brutality. They're extremely tough, and while technically no more than animals, they have an unnatural thirst for blood that means the only good owlbear tends to be one that's dead.

If 20 Or Above:
A number of feathers on this owlbear are missing. This isn't molting season, but you've heard that particularly weakened owlbear mothers must make nests exclusively of their own down, rather than that of creatures they kill.

And a Heal check.

Heal DC 10:
This creature is moving slower than normal thanks to a limp. A crossbow bolt is embedded in its leg.

The farmhouse fence is 80 feet away, so everyone but Bermintrude (and Robin, if he's mounted) will need to take a double-move to arrive at the edge.

I should tell you that it can't charge, because going through the doorway requires squeezing. Unless you're expecting it to forget what ad to spoof and burst through the wall like the Kool-Aid Man...

The creature lets out a louder shriek, like that of a barn owl, as Tanith cuts into its leg.

Farrukh steps on a twig, crunching it beneath his foot.

Instantly, the beast's head does a 90-degree pivot, spinning to face him. Its wild red-rimmed eyes lock with Farrukh's. It hisses.

For a moment, he thinks the beast has noticed. But its bloodlust has too strong a hold of it now for it to investigate every little thing it notices.

The monsteradvances on Tanith.

Tanith's strike misses, and then the beast is upon him. It claws viciously at the warpriest. Though his armor reduces it to merely a graze, Tanith realizes the claws have hooked into his side and now hold him fast.

Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

I'm to see what Farrukh has up his sleeve before Tanith launches his daring escape attempt.

Shouldn't you be at 19/24? It did 5 damage, not 6.

Farrukh quickly moves into the house, around the wall, and then sandwiches the creature between Tanith and himself, lashing out with a powerful strike.

Shouldn't provoke since he's behind a wall in the would-be threatened square.

Even though wrestling with the beast gives the big Kordite a rush unlike any he's felt before, the dangerous nature of those claws and fangs aren't lost on Tanith. Rearing back with a ham-sized fist, he clobbers the owlbear when he spots an opening.

The arrow lands harmlessly onto the bear, barely managing not to bounce off. As the bear starts to topple from Tanith's final blow, Robin rejoices.

"Yes, Tanith, finish him off!"

Tanith lops the owlbear's arm clean off. Robin lands a shot...in the falling limb.

Tanith takes a wide swing at the owlbear, breaking its beak and puncturing its lung. At the same time, an arrow lodges in the owlbear's heel.

The owlbear gives a gurgle and collapses.

Everyone hears a cheep. A miniature version of the beast just fought crawls out of the shadows along the north wall. It stares at the adventurers with wide eyes, cheeping louder.

The owlbears aren't generally eaten, in case that's what you're assuming. They're just made into guard beasts, or (quite often) stuck in arenas.

Now that the fight is over, the newcomers see that thick, sludgy puddles of dried blood and unidentifiable fleshy chunks litter the wooden floor immediately inside the front door.

Robin sighs, hops off Bermintrude and draws his bow again. "I'll put one silver coin on that thing mauling Carina."

They are very, very fresh. She's pretty sure it's the remains of at least three humans.

Among the parts, she finds three things of note:

An intact severed arm. It has a tattoo on it that Astraden instantly recognizes. This is the symbol of Garavin Vesst, a greedy mine manager who branded his employees with it as a mark of status. Vesst was bankrupted by Smenk years ago. The branded employees were little more than slaves under Vesst, and regard their current servitude to Smenk as a privilege. Kullen wears the tattoo on his forehead, having once been Vesst's chief enforcer.

A masterwork composite +1 longbow.

A bloodied scroll.
