"Oh, issues with the Nightwatchmen? Yeah, there are reasons for that. We can discuss that momentarily. But I got home well enough. As whoever delivered your message can attest to. Let them know, thanks for the dagger, by the way. Can always use a new one." He gives a smiling glance down at the 'message' dagger, tucked at his belt, then, back to Tirra, "Certainly a better trip home than the night before that. Just out of curiosity, and no offense taken if the answer is 'yes', but since you guys were following me to begin with, did any of your people see me get nabbed by doppelgangers? By the way, it's perfectly fine to use the d-word and not talk around it now, because they're all dead." He folds his hands together on the table. "Well, mostly."

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

As one, the thieves all stiffen.

Tirra speaks slowly, her hands behind her back. "We didn't see anything. You moved fast, and we got jumped on our way by some confused guardsmen. By the time things got explained, Eben was nowhere to be found. So if you're gonna play this game, I hope you have some proof you are who you say you are."

"My friends can vouch for me, if you want. They're the ones that found me. Of course, they were being escorted by the 'fake' me. I'm down a few friends because of that. Another reason I was saying you have too many chairs here. And if you're suspicious of them too... well I can't blame you." He begins untying the sack from his belt. "Mind you, we're not asking you to prove your identity. Why? Because Tirra isn't a name on The List." He tosses the sack down in the middle of the table. "And hopefully what's in there will be proof enough that I'm no friend to shapeshifters." He leans close and says quietly, "Just peek inside, this is a classy place, no need to make people scream."

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

Tirra eyes Eben with open suspicion, but she opens the bag and looks inside. She is still for a moment.

She sets the bag back down, relaxing. "An eyeball probably would've been enough, but it's not like I haven't seen worse. Auric and Khellek may be complete idiots, but they're pretty good at killing people. Like to leave messes, they do."

The other thieves relax as well as Tirra folds her fingers. "So. How'd it go? Other than the dead friends, I mean."

"Not well. Thanks for asking." Carina sighs. "Aside from me almost being eaten by their floor..."

The undine clears her throat and straightens herself up. "We've cleared out the doppelgangers, but we've run into one hell of a snag--we ran into a group of drow led by some sort of squid-headed humanoid abomination."

She shudders. "The squid-headed one had some sort of wand with which it could throw lightning around."

"Hm." Tirra considers it. "Sounds like a wand of lightning bolt."

"Sounds kinda like a mind flayer." Tirra shrugs. "They're a sort of brain-leeching aberration. They're real big on that psionics stuff. We ran into one once, but the thing wasn't too eager for a fight, so it flew off the moment we broke Auric free of its control. Mind flayers are smart like that."

She eyes Carina with a curious mixture of sympathy and amusement. "They don't usually use magic items. You must've pissed off a special one."

"Great." Carina's head hits the table with a resigned *THUNK*.

"Yeah... there was a necromancer the doppelgangers kidnapped as well. We freed him, but I guess he tried to escape and..." She promptly shuts up and hugs herself.

Eben gives a pleased smile, having finally come to the point of this meeting. Only had to drop the bait, what, two, maybe three times, if you count Farrukh's hint...

"Doppelgangers are... meticulous notekeepers, it would seem," Eben says. "Of course, they know how to hide their secrets well..." He holds an empty palm up in the air and wiggles his fingers around. "But if you know where to look..." He makes a fist and extends his closed hand across the table to Tirra, balled fingers facing up. "And apply just the right pressure..." He exhales a gentle breath over the top of his hand and opens his fingers, revealing an origami rose full of secrets.

Oh, what the heck. Making a SoH check to see if that got pulled off in a properly swanky fashion.
Sleight of Hand: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (20) + 16 = 36
SWANKY.

"A flower for the lady," he says, laying it down in front of her. "Or for the assistant guildmaster. He can have Telakin's face too. The one he can put in a vase, the other he can tan and hang on the wall. The many, many other pages, though... well, he could bind them together and make a nice book. If he had them. Only the sample is complimentary, though."

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

Tirra takes the rose gently and examines it. She looks at Carina, waving the rose between two fingers and raising an eyebrow. "Good call on upgrading from crazy horse guy. This one's got flair."

She turns to Eben, smiling. This time, the smile is genuine. "I'm impressed, MacTeague. You'd have made a fine guildmember. I think I can persuade the boss to arrange for a small sum in exchange for such a lovely book. Say..." Her voice lowers. "...nine hundred orbs per head?"

A greedy light shines in Eben's eyes momentarily, but is suppressed. "Coin... is nice. No denying that. And might be what we come back to in the end, but.. we had in mind a different compensation." His voice hardens a bit, all pretense and banter set aside for the painful topic to come. "Like I said, we lost people. One of them a cleric of Olidammara. Now, we've seen miracles happen before after death..." He nods sideways at Carina. "But two or three miracles... are harder to come by. We were hoping the guild might have a Olidammaran of its own who might be able to make miracles happen."

Ignore the avatar image. The site is having an error right now where you can't edit them, and this is a recycled alias.

A very tall, but willowy man with noble features and a gleaming mithril breastplate enters the room from the back door. He is tugging down his under tunic to straighten it over his hose and codpiece, but is otherwise meticulously arranged. He smiles at the sight of the party. His eyes linger for a moment on Tanith, Eben and Carina's bodies, before quickly darting back up to meet everyone's eyes. My, my, how yummy!

"You'll have to excuse my late arrival," he says. "That kettite pepper roll I had last night just wouldn't allow me to be punctual," he shrugs apologetically, then gives Farrukh a suspicious glance as if he might be hiding more of the gastronomically offensive offering around his person somewhere. "But where are my manners? I am Rodrigo. Rodrigo Dantares." He offers the group a small bow. He claps his hands together in front of himself and then rubs them vigorously together for a moment before throwing them wide, as if to wash himself of his tardiness. He flashes another white toothed smile before asking, "Now, what did I miss?"

Let it be known: one of the first things Jelani chose for us to notice about Rodrigo was his codpiece.

"Well, that's one of the reasons I don't much care for Kettite food, myself..." Eben says, giving the newcomer an appreciative once-over. "No offense, Farrukh, just a bit too spicy." He looks back at Tirra. "This the company you were waiting on? Are we expecting anyone else, or...?" Looking back at Rodrigo, he gestures to the empty seats. "Please, have a seat," he says, as though he were the one who called the meeting in the first place. "And you've missed a few things, but nothing that you won't catch up. Though I am sorry to say you missed a fantastic bit of stagework on my part right now. I can't say that I've ever pulled off a Bemmelman's Instant Flower sleight with quite as much panache..."

Farrukh is a bit miffed.

Why do they get the moon eyes, while he glares at me? What did I do? he thinks, frowning.

He then cocks his head sideways at Rodrigo.

"Why are you dressed like that? I mean, Eben is a bit of a fop, but this is beyond that."

"And doesn't that thing just make it MORE of a target? It sticks out like 3 inches." he says, pointing at the codpiece.

Tirra frowns. She taps her chin. "Two or three is a tall order. The Guild loves doing people favors, don't get me wrong, but we don't manage our members' personal businesses as long as it all stays legal (if it doesn't, we get a cut). Meaning they kind of sell their own miracles on their own time—for a bit more than nine hundred orbs a head, too. Getting them to give up their 'divine gifts' for our benefit is like herding displacer beasts."

She picks up a roll. "We can shunt your reward to Aramius—he's for Norebo, so he's generally a bit more willing to do favors. We'll give you one raise dead and one lesser restoration—you can cash in the second anytime, in case you'd rather use it on one of the other two. And as for the other two..." She takes a bite out of the roll, shrugging.

Tirra arches her eyebrows. "But we might be able to arrange something else. No offense, MacTeague, but it sounds like you guys need some arcane support. As it happens—oh, speak of the devil."

When Tirra infers that Rodrigo will be assigned to this group, one of his eyebrows shoots up for a moment before he gets it under control. Could have told me that before, Tirra...

"I am in fact a skilled wielder of the arts arcane, if you have need of such a gentleman," Rodrigo says to Tanith.

He scratches his chin thoughtfully, then takes another bite of his pastry. Then, back to Tirra, "Can we take some time to discuss this? We should have a better idea by the day's end. The list gets sold either way, we just need to figure out how we'll take the payout." He glances over at Rodrigo, carefully appraising the tall man. "I was just going to say I'd get in touch the same way, but I suppose I won't have to if we have him with us. So... are you actually assigning us a minder? Don't get me wrong, he's certainly nice to look at and all, but I'm not sure how comfortable I am about a guild rep staring right over our shoulders..."

"Huh. Well, that's a shame. Today knowing what a bunch of stuff does is a bit more on the agenda than dropping hellspawn on a battlefield. Guess we'll make do, though. Actually, I'm seeing a use for being sneaky at some point later... Anything else you need from us right away, Tirra? Because we've got a weird appointment with a crazy cat lady, otherwise..." He finishes off his pastry. His words only slightly muffled by the last of the glazed topping vanishing down his mouth, he says, "Mmph. Those are good." He flips a gold piece onto the table. "Do me a favor and treat your two friends at the counter to a couple. Has to be boring, just sitting there, watching other people talk..." He gives a cherubic grin as he stands.

Did anyone else have anything to add here? Don't want to rush us along, but things seem to have slowed.

Tanith is surprisingly quick to get to his feet and position himself between Carina and the newcomer.

"Let's get going. I could use some air."

To the cat lady!

Carina gives Tanith a quizzical look as he interposes himself between her and Rodrigo.

Off to the shrine!

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

Tirra gives a small wave as the group makes to depart. "We'll be in touch."

The group exits Murdo's Pantry and heads up north. It's an extremely short walk to the shrine, even though they're situated on opposite sides of the neighborhood.

In front of the shrine to the god of nature is a small single-story house. Unlike most in the Muddle (at least, of those that haven't been burned down), this house is entirely made of wood.

The shrine itself is a small grove of young maples, filled with prickly rose briars. Within, the party can make out a harried-looking young elf dealing with several locals from the apartment complexes. An olive-eyed gray tabby sits on her shoulder, cleaning itself.

"Yes, it's no trouble. Thank you for visiting. Just remember what I told you. Please come again."

Sense Motive 15:
She seems to be trying to hint to the visitors that it's time to leave. They seem oblivious to her signals.

I hate to tell you, KC, but those Midnight Muddle google docs are once again requesting passwords. Funny, I could swear I looked at them just last week, too.

Auto-succeed at a DC 15 Sense Motive, so...

"Oh, I do not feel like waiting around today..." Eben mutters. He grabs a bit of putty and some makeup from his disguise kit, artistically smears some dirt on his features, and accentuates the whole look with a couple of cantrips. In a few seconds, he is transformed from everyday Eben to an Eben who looks like he's an escapee from a plague colony. Large, oozing lesions mar his face, and when he opens his mouth a death-like stench escapes (the result of a prestidigitation), almost visibly on a cloud of halitosis.

Using Quick Change to don a disguise as a standard action for a -5 penalty. Also using Quick Change for my once-a-day Take 20 on a disguise check, for an overall result of:
Ickypoo Disguise: 20 - 5 + 2 + 19 = 36

Once done, he staggers into the grove of trees. "Healah'! I needs me a healah!" he says, in a gasping, croaking voice. "It's da Iuzpox! I swear I didn't get no closer to that beggah than twenty feet, I could see it all ovah his face, but I still come down with it! I been peein' blood for two days!" He pauses, wheezing, no more than a couple of yards from the group around the elf. "Is onea you da healah?"

Carina has no idea what the elf wants of the people. She has no time to put more thought into it as Eben changes from healthy to sickly and pox-ridden in the blink of an eye.

She almost says something, but decides against it, opting to let him work.

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

The visitors and druid whirl to face the "infected".

"Uh, I have to go talk to my husband, like you said, Anlathi," one says, already edging away.

"Yeah, thanks for the ointment," says another, quickly stuffing a pouch into their pocket and hurrying off.

The third just turns and scampers away.

Heal: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 20 = 32

Only the elf stays. Looking alarmed, she draws out a sprig of mistletoe and casts a spell on herself before advancing. "Oh, earth and sky. I...I'm afraid this isn't Iuzpox, sir." She swallows. "I don't know how to tell you this, but these symptoms are consistent with Fleshslough, an extraplanar sickness." She glances at the others. "Has anyone been in a confined space with limited airflow with you since you contracted this? Have you been around yugoloths or dimension hoppers lately?"

Sense Motive 20:
She seems frightened, but grimly determined.

Weird. It's fixed now:

Guide.
Map.

They can also be accessed from the main tab.

Eben gives an exceptionally hacking and phlegmy series of coughs as the trio make themselves scarce. "Oh, really?" he says, dropping the accent and adopting a much healthier posture. "Huh. Funny. Didn't know that, been using 'Iuzpox' as my go-to for ages. Always helped to have a buddy ready to come in if a deal started going south... anyhow." he begins peeling off the nasty, scabby patches.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32

"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. The disease was fake, you just look like you needed a convenient excuse to shoo off your other guests." He holds his hand in front of his face, exhales into it, and blanches. "Whoo, went WAY too strong with that..." he says, recasting a cantrip and replacing the smell of rotting cheese with the faint scent of cloves and citrus. "Anyway, my apologies if I guessed wrong. My name is Eben McTeague, and... well... a cat told us to come here. Not that one, though..." He nods to the one perched on her shoulder.

Relieved that Eben's subterfuge worked, Carina steps forward.

"And my name's Carina. Are you the owner of a white-furred, blue-eyed cat named Screecher?"

"Tanith", the big man grunts in greeting.

Anlathi looks mystified at the sudden shift in demeanor. "Um...the symptoms are similar, but Iuzpox causes more lesions inside the mouth."

The elf's eyes widen. "Oh! You must be Eben MacTeague! And Carina, and—yes, yes, Ygbin told me she sent you a message, but I wasn't sure when you'd be coming. I've been waiting a long time to speak with you!"

Standing beside the body-laden Spiny, Carina notices the dinosaur looking oddly at the shrine. He's been acting off-kilter ever since the departure from the doppelganger hideout, and he clearly does not care for Rodrigo. Spiny tilts his head, giving a confused-sounding growl.
