Smith reaches Valen just as the floating scythe swoops down at him. Smith and Valen both tumble into the mud, the latter landing squarely beneath the former. The floating scythe springs back up, hovering in position, preparing to strike again!!

Your party is presently sixty feet east of Valen. While the terrain isn't difficult, it is pretty slippery. People who fail Acrobatics skill checks, Reflex saves, or who fumble *may* fall down.

Initiative!!

Kendra rolls a 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7.
Tharnik rolls a 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14 and a 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10.
Vaghn rolls a 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5.
The Scythe rolls a 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6.

Madeline continues to extricate her new x-bow from her clothes and its holster.

"Will this thing actually do any good..?" She asks worriedly, glancing towards where a floating scythe hovers malignantly.

Smith is not worried at all about the physics of the situation, he simply rolls onto his back (And off the now prone Valen) shifting to bring his great maul across his chest and into a defensive position.

So, Smith is staying prone, unlimbering his weapon and remaining 'Full defensive' with whatever that adds to his AC.

Creel Initiative 1d20 ⇒ 13

Round 1

Creel charges the other half of the problem. As he covers the ground he seems to grow sharper in focus as though there was a break in the clouds.

Attack, SMITE, axe: 1d20 + 5 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 5 + 3 = 10 please add 2 if charge was possible. Well that is underwhelming. Damage if this somehow hits, axe, whetsone, smite vs undead: 1d10 + 4 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 + 1 + 4 = 17. Ac vs thing assuming smite applies (15AC +3smite -2charge) 16

Alexa heads toward the Scythe.

Smith and Valen. Get out of there, make it follow us. Everyone, hold off attacking this until we are fully prepared.

Round 1

On 14, Alexa yells out to Valen and Smith, moving into combat.

On 14, Tharnik grunts and double moves behind Alexa.

On 13, Creel charges past her, pull his axe as he does. He swings at the floating scythe as he arrives, letting the full force of his charge power his blow. Sadly, he just misses it.

On 7, Smith rolls off of Valen, bringing up his maul in a defensive position.

On 7, Kenda pulls out her wand, aims, and fires at the floating scythe. A bolt of magical energy flies out across the prison yard, striking true. The magic, however, does not seem to effect the thing.

On 6, the scythe swoops down, attacking Smith. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21. It deals 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 damage if it hits.

Smith:
Did you heal Smith before? If not, he's now at 4/15 hit points. I don't recall you doing so, but if you did, you did not update his character sheet.

On 5, Vaghn moves up thirty feet and attempts to identify the creature! 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26. If successful, he yells out and warns all of you, granting each of you a +1 insight bonus to AC, to hit, and to saves against any supernatural effects it unleashes on you! Vaghn yells, "It's not alive! It's some sort of animated thing, a haunted weapon! Attack it with divine energy like you would the undead!!"

On 5, Madeline pulls off her backpack and removes her crossbow.

On 14, Alexa continues forward, swinging her club at the scythe! The scythe darts out of her way as if it could see her and she misses!

Alexa:
This thing is NOT natural. It feels like something dead, but not as if it were a full spirit. It feels like the extension of some greater evil... made manifest.

On 14, Tharnik moves adjacent to Alexa and lets out a battle cry! Everyone gets a +1 moral bonus to attack rolls, skill checks, and saving throws until round 5.

Round 2

Creel circles the sythe-thing making sure he does not foul a charge and trying for a flank with Tharnik or Alexa. On solid footing following his charge Creel sweeps his pole-arm at shoulder height aiming to separate the sythe's blade from the shaft.

"Save your wand Kendra, this thing is protected."

attack with halberd, smite, song, cry: 1d20 + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 5 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 15, now we see if just misses means by one point or more..... Damage, smite, whetstone: 1d10 + 4 + 1 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 1 + 4 = 13. Current AC vs thing 19. 15 vs anything else.

Dark Archive

Everyone should be getting the following bonuses from Vaghn and Tharnik; +1 moral bonus to hit, skill checks, and saving throws until round 5. A +1 insight bonus to hit, AC, and saving throws against supernatural, extrodinary, and spell-like abilities used by this creature! Effectively, you should each be at +2 to hit, +1 to AC, +2 to saves, and +1 to skill checks.

Dark Archive

Creel:
Vaghn was successful. He yelled out what it was. I didn't call it out by the book name, because it's a unique encounter. You should be able to figure out what it is from the flavor text, however.

On 13, Creel moves around the scythe, flanking it with Alexa. He swings his halberd, trying to sunder the weapon itself - and misses. The scythe, unnaturally aware, continues to dart about, dodging your attacks.

Creel:
You should be at +9 to hit with flanking, +7 without.

I do apologize. I am unsure as to how much I had healed Smith on the previous day. It has been a while. I shall say not for now. *Bows*

Though that should allow Madeline to cast healing now, upon Smith?

Round 2

Seeing her manservant wounded, Madeline gathers her concentration ass she rushes over to his prone form.

Cast 'Rejuvenate Eidolon;Lesser':1d10 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

"Foolish!" She rebukes him, obviously forgetting her own peril. :P

Dark Archive

Madeline, as you kneel and cast your spell, the wicked looking scythe swings down at you!

Madeline:
This is an attack of opportunity! Be careful where you cast in the future OR try casting defensively!

It swings 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 and deals 2d4 ⇒ (3, 4) = 7 points of damage to you if it hits. If it hits, you will need to make a Concentration check to successfully cast your spell. The DC will be 11 + the damage dealt.

Dark Archive

Sorry all, I responded to Madeline's action before I realized she goes at the end of the round. If the scythe can take an attack of opportunity against one of you, instead (aka, if you provoke before Madeline does, it will do just that). Otherwise, it swings and misses Madeline. And I will not be keeping the same rolls, treating any other attacks as fresh attacks (cause honestly, it would be fair since you now know what I'm going to roll!)

Round 2:
At Vaughn's announcement, Valen focuses his efforts on calling in the Lady's poweers - his eyes turning grey as holy light emanates from his symbol. Don't think any of the additional bonuses in effect would impact here, right?

On 14, Tharnik let out a fierce battle cry!

On 14, Valen sits up, holding his holy symbol aloft and channeling the divine will of his goddess. Grey light bursts forth in a thirty-foot radius, bathing everything in a feeling of peaceful death. The scythe stops momentarily, as parts of it begin to decay right before your eyes! Will save 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (15) - 5 = 10.

Valen:
Please list your DC in the future.

On 13, Creel swings and misses the scythe.

On 7, Smith continues to lie prone.

On 7, Kendra moves up behind Tharnik, watching the battle with her wand in hand.

On 6, the scythe swoops down, attacking Creel! 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22, dealing 2d4 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 points of damage if it hits.

On 5, Vaghn pulls off his backpack and starts fishing around for something inside it.

On 5, Madeline runs over to Smith, kneels down, and heals him. The scythe, in response, swings at her, but misses.

On 14, Tharnik chants a spell and targets the creature. It's blade suddenly turns red-hot, but instantly returns to normal a second later. Tharnik grunts in frustration!

On 14, Valen gets up and channels again! He floods the area in grey light, further eroding the blade! The scythe attempts to save 1d20 - 5 ⇒ (6) - 5 = 1.

On 13, Creel presses his attack, strikes the scythe and damages it some.

Creel:
This object has hardness. I'm "hand-waving" some damage to it because of your awesome honesty! Shssss... don't tell anyone.

On 7, Smith tries to pull Madeline down into the mud. She jumps back, trying to pull her crossbow out as she does.

On 7, Kenda quickly casts a spell, firing a ray of grey-white energy at the scythe. 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3, dealing 1d6 ⇒ 1 points of damage if she does.The ray misses!

On 6, the scythe swings at Creel again! 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4, dealing 2d4 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 if it hits.

Perhaps it is the brushes with death that have brought him closer to the goddess' power...he's unsure. But he opens his eyes with a greater confidence that he's serving the path of the Grey Lady.

Just a little embelishment for the leveling. I suppose I could have just said heard a "DING" noise.

Lightning cracks overhead, briefly illuminating the rain-soaked mud, as you take in the scene of your battle. Bits of broken wood and steel paint the soft ground around you and a single, lone skeletal arm – still grasping the scythe that once hovered overhead – only serves to remind you of exactly where you are.

Harrowstone Prison

As if to reinforce the point, another bolt of lightning streaks across the sky, cutting through the damp rain and grey clouds. And like before, the fields around you begin to darken before your eyes even have time to adjust to the sudden flash of light. The rain, for its part, begins to gently increase and the soft earth around you responds in kind. As you gather your weapons, gear, and other items – each step becomes a labored movement.

Their gear collected, Kendra and Tharnik begin to trudge back to the front porch of the prison, stopping just short of the small flight of stairs that leads to the front door. Both look in your direction.

"One down...a few more to go..." She says, drolly trying to make light of their resent encounter. She peers intently at the porch, the stairs, indeed everything about the place where they are currently standing.

"First it's flying garden tools...Next it will be aggressive cutlery.." Madeline mutters

He sees Kendra, Tharnik, Madeline, and Smith make their way towards the entrance and confirms the lady's assessment from his earlier observations. "That entrance won't hold everyone's weight. We'll either have to go in pairs through the door or find another way in."

Hoping his sharp eyes can spot something in the growing darkness, he turns towards the balcony where the sycthe once dwelt - looking for another set of stairs that might lead to it. "Maybe see if there's another way in, perhaps? Can anyone follow me, lest I have flying anvils come after me next?" Valen attempts at levity cease, and starts his search anew - but this time he keeps his mace at the ready and shield at hand.

"Though traipsing about in the rain does not seem like much fun...and I am unsure as to how soon night shall be upon us...finding if there is a safer way in sounds like a good idea. Also keeping an eye out for anything the killers of the late Professor might have left behind... Madeline expresses her thoughts on the matter.
