Not sure how long this will take. Goal is to keep Tharnik thinking until we can get a solid hold on him while someone brings a rope. Mind you that spell may have something to say aboout this so consider this an aspirational rather than a strictly descriptive post.

Madeline nods at Creel's words, indicates to Smith to 'follow' creel's lead, before she turns and quickly and quietly heads off down stairs to gather the things Creel had indicated.

:)

Smith accepts his Mistress instructions and does as Master Creel begins his slow show of support/restraint for Tharnik.

Dark Archive

Rendel is in the room and therefor subject to the spell. Smith is affected (as are all Eidolons) by enchantment spells. He receives a +4 to his will save from Devotion, granting him a total of +6 to Will. (BTW Madeline, Smith's saves look wrong for level 2. You should double check them). Creel, as well as Tharnik, are both subject to the spell. Dortlin is also in the room. The DC is 13. Here are the saves.

Smith moves to Creel's side and 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18... looks on as his allies collapse.

Creel, surprised by the spell, 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11...collapses.

Rendel, moving toward the edge of the room, 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12...weaves ever so slightly and then falls to the floor...

Dortlin, sap in hand, 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 looks on as his companions fall.

Tharnik, edgy and defensive, 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22 looks toward Creel and screams something in Orcish. He then whips around to glare at Dortlin.

Orcish:
"Why you sleep spell my friend? You desire fight!?!?!"

I believe an "oh f#$K" is probably in order...

In a fit of self-preservation I would like to point out that normally sleep only affects up to 4HD worth of creatures, and most, if not all of the peoples present in the room are second level. So the spell is likely to be played out on the two lowest HD characters closest to its point of origin.

On the bright side I figured that something horrible would happen to Rendel like Lycanthropy...

Understood. As only two people failed their saves and all are in the room, easily within the range, only those two people (each 2 HD) are effected. I rolled everyone's save at the same time - just like my players would at the table. Had more failed, this would be an excellent point. Sadly, only two did fail and this is moot.

Dark Archive

Round 3, Smith's go. Madeline is, however, downstairs getting rope and technically does not know Rendel is asleep.

Kendra, seeing Tharnik deftly dodge Smith's efforts, gasps and pulls her wand - keeping it at the ready.

Tharnik, confused and angry, pushes Smith back 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12 and fails in turn.

Then, in Orcish, he says...:

Rendel will dramatically lay on the ground and dream of having his face torn off.

Vaghn pales visibly as his spell causes his companions to drop instead of Tharnik. "Bloody hells, why is nothing ever easy?" he mutters and attempts to trip Tharnik

Trip attempt with whip1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

As a side note, I believe that, as a full-round casting time spell, sleep goes off at the beginning of my next turn, which would mean, I believe, my turn has been skipped and is almost back to my initiative again (after Madeline). For your consideration, oh Fearless Leader.

Dortlin swore as his companions collapsed to the ground. Seeing now that diplomacy was definitely out, waited for his opportunity, and the second Tharnik was distracted the rough half-elf brought his sap down with all his might. Without waiting for the enraged Tharnik to reply Dortlin tried to slip by him, pointedly stepping on Creel as he went.

Attack w/sap: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24. Add any additional modifiers if appropriate.
Edit for Nat 20, Crit confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24 plus whatever appropriate modifiers.

Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9. Add 1d6 ⇒ 3 for sneak attack if appropriate.
If crit confirms additional damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19.

O_O Sometimes the dice gods are kind. Does Tharnik seem phased at all?

Dark Archive

Vaghn steps up, strikes at Tharnik with his whip, and pulls him to the ground. Tharnik, quite surprised, lands squarely on his back. Dortlin takes advantage of this and brings his sap down squarely between Tharnik's eyes.

Tharnik goes limp.

Dortlin skidded to a halt and turned raising his small bludgeon ready to be set upon only to be greeted by the sight of Tharnik collapsing to the floor. For a split second he seemed frozen in surprise, but it soon gave way to a satisfied grunt. Turning to those still standing he gave a rough command, "Tie him up, use that whip o' yours if'n you have to for now. There's a good rope in my pack downstairs if need be." He paused a moment and looked somewhat sheepishly at Kendra, "Sorry 'bout the window..." Not knowing what else to say Dortlin turned away quickly and gave Creel a light kick in the side, "Wake up."

Oh, is Tharnik still all wolfy?

Vaghn dismisses the grease spell. "Er, yes, sorry about that Herr Candleman. My spell of slumber was supposed to affect Tharnik, but when he shrugged it off it sought other targets. I did warn you to back away from him... Oh well, all is well that ends well. Er, relatively well." He turns to the stairs and calls down, "Heinrich, would you be so good as to bring the rope up from Herr... er, Dortlin's pack please?"

Dortlin stepped over to Rendel and nudged him with his foot. "You, too. This ain't no time for sleepin'."

He picked at a couple small shards of broken glass still clinging to his clothing then warily approached the unconscious Tharnik, still holding the sap in his hand. As he crouched for a closer look Dortlin winced a little and a small drop of blood pattered to the floor from his leg, "damn window," he muttered to himself. He glanced back at the others, "What's goin' on here?"

Male Human Inquisitor 2

Rubbing his head Rendel groans "Get him to the basement and tie him down. Lycanthropy. Don't let him bite you."

Dark Archive

Kendra steps into the room and upon seeing Tharnik, lets out a little gasp. Then, noticing the side glances her recovering companions offer in return, she straightens, tucks her wand in her belt, and says, "Well, I suppose we should move him before he wakes. I don't have any manacles, but I suppose there is enough rope in the basement to do the trick. Maybe I should be the one to wake him, when all is said and done?"

XP noted.

Male Human Inquisitor 2

Dragging the hefty half orc warrior downstairs with the help of the rest Rendle makes sure he's good and secure tying him to a secure spot (column, pipe, whatever) before vacating everyone out of the room. As an after thought, and out of some scholarly curiosity he casts Protection from Evil on Tharnik before joining the rest upstairs. He then retrieves his hat and pack and prepares to leave.

"Tharnik wasn't the only one bitten by a wolf. I need to inform the Father before this gets worse."

Dark Archive

Kendra looks at Rendel and says, "Who else was bitten? If another one of us was bitten, why aren't we changing? Look outside, it's a full moon....."

"The entire town was attacked. Many were injured. I healed a few of them myself. Believe me when I say I am praying very hard to be wrong right now." Rendel moves quickly despite his apparent calm fearing that any moment they'll be marching through a dark street to the sound of howls and screams.

I need an escape artist skill check to bind Tharnik. Any volunteers?

TheReplacementGM wrote:

Dortlin helped lug Tharnik down to the basement, there, quickly checking the rope availabe to make sure it was sound, he set to binding the half-orc to the most secure fixture in the room with the others' help. As he worked Dortlin kept a sharp eye out for any sign that Tharnik might be about to regain consciousness and also for anything that might be unusual on or about his person.

Given that it is likely Dortlin has the highest escape artist score, it's seems reasonable to assume he makes the check and whoever else is present assist. Are you changing the binding rules from those noted under grappling? If so, what would the likely result be from taking 10? It seems like he'd have a decent idea of how well he could tie someone up.

Assuming rolling is the common sensical action rather than taking 10 here is the roll.
Escape Artist: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20.
If you go by the tie up rules, the DC to escape Dortlin's bindings should be 24.

Perception (to noticing anything unusual or hidden on Tharnik's person): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20.

Dark Archive

Really? I thought it was as follows: Tie Up: If you have your target pinned, otherwise restrained, or unconscious, you can use rope to tie him up. This works like a pin effect, but the DC to escape the bonds is equal to 20 + your Combat Maneuver Bonus (instead of your CMD). The ropes do not need to make a check every round to maintain the pin. If you are grappling the target, you can attempt to tie him up in ropes, but doing so requires a combat maneuver check at a –10 penalty. If the DC to escape from these bindings is higher than 20 + the target's CMB, the target cannot escape from the bonds, even with a natural 20 on the check.

In which case we just need someone with a higher CMB to do the tying. (I believe Creel should be highest, followed by Rendel, Dortlin, or Smith tied for second.)

Tie up works, as well. I've always house-ruled in favor of Escape Artist and, to be honest, didn't realize Pathfinder had rules for it based on the CMB mechanics. Learn something new everyday, I suppose! ;)

Dortlin hauls up some heavy ropes from a dusty corner of the basement, and after several minutes working, ties Tharnik up. He takes extra special care not to harm Tharnik and, as he does, removes several small knives from his boots and belt. He takes a few more minutes to carefully examine the half-orc and with a nod of satisfaction, backs away.

Tharnik, throughout the process, does not stir.

When everyone is done Kendra asks, "So, now what?"

Creel looks grave. "Rendel is correct. Several people suffered wolf-bites and at least one man was killed. It may be too late but an attempt needs to be made." Creel addresses Rendel, "Do you want company or will you be faster alone?"

"Some of you lot seem like you might know," Dortlin jerked his thumb toward the basement door, "there any cure for that one?"

"'Cause if'n it gets out someone in his state's tied up in Lorrimor's cellar, the townfolk, they're like to be comin' for him."

"Anyway, I been thinkin', if'n it were a wolf bite what done it and Tharnik weren't the only one bit, then oughtn't the rest be done changed about now. That'd raise a panic I'd reckon." Dortlin stepped toward the door and opened it, listening for any unusual sounds carrying through the night air.

I think the Lorrimor place is pretty close to town isn't it? Any sound of anything unusual or amiss coming from the town or otherwise nearby?

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23.

Male Human Inquisitor 2

Rendel shrugs. "If we had caught it earlier it would have been easier. We can't worry about that right now. Right now we have to worry about the lives that will be lsot tonight. We should all go together. Going alone on this kind of night....it doesn't feel right. It feels like an opportunity for them. Let's tread lightly and prepare for the worst."

It is. It's on the west side of town, across the river, but easily within earshot.

Dark Archive

Kendra looks at Dortlin and nods. Then, she addresses the group.

"You know, Dortlin has a point. It's a full moon and it's pretty quiet outside. If there were any other transformations or other emergencies the town bell would be ringing by now. But it's not. Maybe Tharnik was the only one that was unlucky enough to suffer a bite? I know when we was defending me, the wolves that came after me had a fell look in their eyes - they displayed a level of intelligence that I don't normally associate with wolves."

Kendra pauses for a moment to think, tapping her foot gently on the basement floor as she does.

"Maybe the other wolf attacks were a distraction? Maybe they were just after my father's research?" She says.

Finally, after another brief pause, she continues, "Dortlin's right, too. If the townsfolk think my father was a necromancer and then hear we've got a werewolf tied in the basement it may destroy our credibility here. Worse, there's a good reason to think they're likely to storm my place and burn it to the ground. Are we ready for that? I know I'm not."

She looks at Rendel, awaiting his response.

Male Human Inquisitor 2

Rendel ponders this briefly and then asks. "And you'd risk the lives of hundreds on this? I can't." Already sensing the building of tension Rendel continues. "We don't have to explain why we're afraid that there might be a lycnathropy problem. The only thing the bell tells us is that someone made it there to ring it. But I'll hold if the rest think it best." Then rendel's face takes a darker and much more serious turn. "But gods help all of you should a single person be harmed tonight due to our inaction."

Awwww look, the paranoid brooder is compromising. It thinks it's nice people.

Kendra, would you be so kind as to prepare a very strong pot of tea? I think we have a long night of rather important research ahead of us. Heinrich, you were always a quick study; be a good man and assist me."

Vaghn will research a cure for lycanthropy, spending all night if necessary.

Frowning, Dortlin scratched his face. "In truth, I don't feel good 'bout it, not either way. We don't do nothin', someone might get hurt. We do the wrong action, people probably will get hurt, up to and includin' ourselves."

"Let's say Miss Lorrimor's right, they's after somethin'. Maybe we ought figure out what that is. You all gone through everything Lorrimor sorted as important?" Dortlin's brow furrowed as he thought back, trying to remember everything that'd happened since he'd arrived in Ravengro. "What about that locked book, you ever open that?"

Dark Archive

Kendra looks at Rendel and says, "I know you're right to worry, but if we alert the folks to this problem, they're going to ask what spurred it. I know these folks. They are good people, but they've lived in a dark land for far too long. They jump at every shadow. They lock every window. I suspect, because of your profession, you're much the same way and would view their actions - sans the lynch mob that might follow - as wise. I understand that."

Kendra pauses, tilting her head and then slowly continues.

"If this town is under attack from a dark cult, we'll save far more if we are able to help the town once we've handled this. If we bring the mob to my home, we'll lose all their trust ...and maybe our lives in the process. Worse, who will defend them when this cult returns for whatever brought them here in the first place?"

Kendra strides up and then gently places her hand on Rendel's shoulder.

"I'll be the last to hold you if you elect to go. Just use some subtly when you do. It's easy enough to casually stroll about the town, speaking with Father Grimburrow in the process, and discern if there are bigger problems at hand without alerting everyone to our little problem."

She smiles reassuringly, gently letting her hand fall from Rendel's shoulder. She smiles at the rest of the party, her gaze falling on Creel last.
